Seahawks' Interest in Jackson Does Not Mean Deal Is Imminent

The Seattle Seahawks receiving permission from the San Diego Chargers to discuss a contract with unsigned restricted free agent wide receiver Vincent Jackson does not necessarily mean that a deal is imminent.

While Chargers general manager A.J. Smith remains mum on the subject of Jackson, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the asking price of a second-round draft choice does not appear to be an issue at this point in time.

Trade compensation is actually the second domino that would need to fall.

First, a contract must be agreed to, and Scott Bair of the North County Times reports that little has come from the talks between the Seahawks and Jackson's agents, Jonathan Feinsod and Neil Schwartz, names you may recognize from the Darrelle Revis/New York Jets situation, and that no trade is imminent.

Seattle's interest in Jackson is not a surprise, nor is it new.

The Seahawks have been on a quest to find a big, physical play-maker at the receiver position throughout this off-season They hosted Brandon Marshall in March and brought in reclamation projects Reggie Williams and Mike Williams, with the latter appearing poised to make the 53-man roster. Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network has reported on Seattle's interest in Jackson for months.

However, Seattle's willingness to "wheel and deal" this off-season--over 125 transactions since January--should not cloud the fact that when it comes to big-ticket items, the Seahawks have shown that there is a line they're not willing to cross. If trading multiple high-round draft picks for a wide receiver with considerable off-field issues, and then signing that player to a contract with an APY of $9 to $10 million and $25 million in guarantees, were something the Seahawks were eager to do, Brandon Marshall would be a Seahawk today.

Jackson may need to lower his guarantee demands, and the Chargers may have to take on T.J. Houshmandzadeh's $7 million base salary guarantee, for all three sides to get what they want.
