Packers Practice Roundup, July 30, 2024

Multiple players had good performances at today's practice.

INJURY UPDATE:

The Packers have released three players: kicker James Turner, FB Henry Pearson, and CB Zyon Gilbert. LS Peter Bowden has been re-signed and CB Peter Callis has been added.  Silverstein  The Packers have waived Alex McGough from injured reserve with injury settlement.  Aaron Wilson  First tc practice for Marshawn Lloyd and Kitan Oladapo szn (both just doing individual work).  Zayne Anderson, Robert Rochell both return to practice. Herman

In addition to adding Peter Bowden and Don Callis, the Packers also signed cornerback LJ Davis.  2) CB Don Callis played 171 boundary snaps, 137 slot snaps, and 40 from the box last season at Troy, with 4 PBUs on 18 targets, according to PFF. Listed at 6-0 - 184. Was in as a tryout during rookie minicamp.  Bretl

PERSONNEL:

Number one’s Love Jacobs Davis - Musgrave Doubs - Reed Walker - EJ - Myers - Morgan - Telfort.  2) Gary - Wooden - Clark - Smith McDuffie - Quay - Wilson Stokes - Jaire Williams - McKinney. [So, Wooden gets some reps with the ones.  TGR]  2) Same usual starters in walkthrough, noteworthy: Evan Williams at safety McDuffie at nickel LB Jordan Morgan at RG.  Herman

Sean Rhyan taking some center snaps with second offense.  Bretl

Second team OL: Dillard, Newman, Monk, Newman and Tenuta. Glover rotates in for Tenuta now.  2)  Rhyan was at LG. Oy vey  Hodkiewicz

OFFENSE:

Caleb Jones with a great rep vs LVN to give Pratt time who fires back of end zone slightly behind but in a great spot for Hicks but Hicks couldn’t hold on. Fantastic throw by Pratt.  2)  Clifford getting in a rhythm in red zone. Rolls right and rifled a throw past Valentine for a TD to Hicks who held on and got both feet in bounds. 2) Van Ness gets a sack on Clifford but Teflort did a nice job on him in pass pro. Clifford ran into it. 3) Van ness was unblocked to the QB which is usually a problem. Clifford gets the ball out quick though to Melton on an out for a TD with Bullard in coverage.  Herman

Fantastic block by Tyler Davis to give Clifford time to find an open Bo Melton downfield but Clifford missed him.  Herman

Down 7. 22 seconds left. Ball on the opposing 18(ish). No timeouts. Number one offense up first. 1st and 10. Keisean Nixon pass breakup on first down. 3 safety look for the defense with Williams and Bullard both on the field with a McKinney in dime. Love rolls right and finds Musgrave for a wide open touchdown. A great route by 88 but he clean drops it. Next play Love throws to Watson at the goaline and it’s picked by Stokes.  Herman

Jaire Alexander effusive in his praise for Romeo Doubs. He remembers Doubs not being able to catch a pass on him in 1v1 as a rookie. Now he’s catching 50-50 balls. Alexander says Doubs is his second best WR in NFL.  2) Desperation situation. Third-10 from 18, 11 seconds left, needing TD to tie. Jordan Love targets Christian Watson at goal line, but Watson wasn’t looking for football. Eric Stokes undercut it for interception. Looked a lot like end of Steelers game last season.  [I was distinctly under the impression that the scouting reports indicated that Clifford did not have a big-time arm.  TGR] 3) Jordan Love steps up in pocket to avoid rush, flushes right and uses extra time to find Jayden Reed wide open in end zone for 12-yard touchdown. Looked like Reed came from play’s back side, but Love still found him. Stunning how much better 10 is than even this point last year.  4) For all his struggles in camp, Sean Clifford has an awfully strong arm. Just threaded a bullet to Grant DuBose in back end zone from 8-yard line. Corey Ballentine slipped to allow small opening, where Clifford split the coverage.   Wood

Clifford with his best throw of camp in red zone in the back of the end zone to DuBose who made a nice play as well.  Herman

Romeo Doubs had his way with Jaire Alexander in 1v1, including beating the top corner on a 10-yard fade to the end zone. Soared over Alexander to come down with a contested catch. Impressive reps.  2) After an incompletion on slant, Christian Watson closed 1v1 with a similar type of towering catch over Eric Stokes on end zone fade. Not just a speed guy. Watson knows how to use his size too, even against a big corner.  Wood

ONE x ONES:

Hell of a battle between Doubs and Jaire, Doubs eventually wins in 1x1’s Nixon pbu vs Reed Would have been a hole by Stokes on Watson. Musgrave TD. Beat McKinney easy. Toure nice out vs Balentine complete. Bullard holds Musgrave. Musgrave with the catch easy. Romeo TD on jump ball vs Jaire. Melton smokes Valentine for a td. McKinney pbu vs Musgrave. DuBose beats Green on a slant. Hicks just beat Don Callis easy. Starkey beats Bullard Heath td vs Davis on back shoulder. Doubs nice route but out of bounds vs Jaire. McKinney good coverage on Musgrave. Nixon good coverage on Reed. Watson mosses Stokes in the end zone.  Herman

A few of the notable WR/TE v. DB 1-on-1s

- Reed v. Nixon: Incomplete

- Wicks v. Nixon: Incomplete

- Melton v. Valentine: complete

- Doubs v. Jaire: complete

- Watson v. Stokes: complete

- McKinney v. Musgrave: incomplete.  Bretl

DEFENSE:

Karl Brooks just completely reset the line of scrimmage vs Jordan Morgan on a Jacobs run.  2)  Brooks beats Morgan again for a quick pressure but Love escapes and finds Jaden Reed open in the end zone for a td.  3)  McDuffie all over an inside Jacobs run. Cooper stuffs a Dillon run.  4)  Hopper all over a Wilson run.  [Need better IOL blocking!  TGR]  Herman

Number one defense stays strong on first two red zone plays. Checkdown to Musgrave for nothing and incomplete after Love bought time. Love throws McKinney a gift int in the back of the end zone but 29 can’t hang on. Love gets the defense to declare. Recognizes Doubs with a one on one vs Stokes and hits him for the td. Sprint right in red zone never works. And predictably - it didn’t work. Defense all over it.  Herman

Sprint right option? In this economy?  Nagler

Jonathan Ford wins inside for a potential stop on Wilson. [Against the twos.  TGR]  2) Jonathan Ford is having his best camp. Getting into the backfield. Stacking players in the run game. He’s taken a step.  3) Devonte Wyatt sack on Clifford who won in about a millisecond.  [Against the twos.  TGR] Herman

LVN looped inside of Jones & Jennings for a quick pressure on Pratt. Easton throws right to Sapp but Sapp can’t hold on either. LVN won again on the play.  Herman  [Just remember LVN is going against the twos here.  TGR]

Van Ness wreaking havoc on backups.  Schneidman

Love finds Reed for 16 yard TD in red zone on third and 6 but Gary probably would’ve had the sack.  Hodkiewicz

Love fakes a toss, turns to boot…and finds a disciplined Preston Smith right in his face. Great job not biting on the cheese from the vet.  Nagler

Bullard all over a short pass to Dillon. Evan Williams made such an impressive play on a bootleg. Started going one way, quickly recognized it was going to be a bootleg and got over to Tyler Davis in an instant. Davis dropped the pass. Deep crossers keep working for the offense. This time Love to Doubs for a big pickup.  Herman

ICYMI: Back in April, long-time Packers scout Sam Seale described Evan Williams as “instinctive” and “around the ball.” We are seeing that in camp with Williams having 3 INTs in 6 days. “..a pick-a-day makes the bad feelings go away.”  Bretl

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Greg Joseph goes 3-3 from 41L, 42R and 54L. Now a perfect 6-6 today. Anders Carlson good from 42R and 54L but wide right from 41L. A high snap on his miss, but Daniel Whelan handled it. Joseph now 22-24 in camp. Carlson 21-24.  Wood

LaFleur compliments Daniel Whelan and says he’s been outstanding. He’s the only player without any competition on the roster.  Herman

MISCELLANEOUS:

Jaire Alexander effusive in his praise for Romeo Doubs. He remembers Doubs not being able to catch a pass on him in 1v1 as a rookie. Now he’s catching 50-50 balls. Alexander says Doubs is his second best WR in NFL.  Wood

Keisean Nixon told Kay Adams earlier this summer that Romeo Doubs was the hardest Packers WR to cover in practice.  Kruse

All off-season the talk was about Wicks and Watson possibly taking that step into WR1…. So far in camp, Romeo Doubs is saying don’t forget about me!  2)  LaFleur: “Stokes has looked like the guy we thought he could be.” Also says Carrington Valentine “just continues to make plays.” Anticipates good competition throughout the preseason for the starting corner spot opposite Jaire.  Herman

Adam Stenavich says the main differences going against Jeff Hafley’s defense are more DBs in the box and less shell. DBs are more aggressive against the run, he says.  2) Adam Stenavich says the staff determined right guard was the spot at which Jordan Morgan could best compete for a starting spot, hence why he’s worked there to start camp.  3) Jeff Hafley was surprised when he left Lambeau Field around 9 p.m. last night and there were fans tailgating in the parking lot that long after practice had ended. Said training camp mornings feel like game day mornings. Schneidman

Overall the Packers are in great cap shape for 2024 after fitting in new extensions for Kenny Clark and Jordan Love. They'll have about $9-12 million open to play with to [sign more players, trade at the deadline, extend players or to roll over into 2025.]  Ken Ingalls

Thanks again, TGR.

Training camp is just training camp, but I wish I didn't worry more about the inside of the O-line. Been a constant conversation during practices.

Love the aggressive D play. Hope they can actually make the tackles when they start counting.

"LVN looped inside of Jones & Jennings for a quick pressure on Pratt."
So Dominic Jennings has finally made it onto the field? He's been out with a knee injury. He may be able to push for a spot on the 53.
