Texans Agree to Terms With 3rd Round DT Earl Mitchell
By admin
The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with third-round defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Financial terms of the four-year deal were not disclosed.
Mitchell was chosen with the 81st overall pick out the University of Arizona, and is the third of the Texans' nine draft choices to sign or agree to terms of a contract.
The 6-1, 296-pound Mitchell began his college career as a tight end/h-back, catching 14 passes for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns before converting to defensive tackle for his junior season. Mitchell totaled 88 tackles, including 18 for a loss and 7 quarterback sacks, over the last two seasons. Mitchell was named second-team All-Pac 10 after the 2009 season.
Mitchell ran a 4.75-second time in the 40-yard dash at the 2010 Scouting Combine, and did 25 reps in the bench press. Mitchell also displayed a 33" vertical leap at his Pro Day on March 12.
Mitchell will likely factor into the Texans' tackle rotation, and play a role on some of the special teams units.
