Seahawks P Jon Ryan Focused on Staying on Roster

Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan signed a six-year, $9.1 million dollar contract extension in January, but while he feels like he's finally arrived, he's aware that he needs to perform to stick around.
"Before, I had always felt in the back of my mind that I was fighting just to get on the team," Ryan told The Leader-Post. "I'm obviously still fighting, but I'm thinking more ahead and in terms of trying to get better. I'm worried about how well I'm kicking instead of worrying about being on the team."
In his 31 games with the Seahawks, who signed the former Green Bay Packer one week into the 2008 season, Ryan has averaged 45.9 yards per punt, with a net average of 38.6 yards. 34 of Ryan's 166 punts have been placed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.
Ryan also completed a 42-yard pass to tight end John Carlson on a fake punt last season, and serves as the team's holder on field goals and extra points.
"When it comes to the NFL, no one is ever secure and no one is ever safe," Ryan said. "You're always fighting for your job. I feel as secure as you can feel with this new contract, but I know that if I don't perform like I can, they've got 10 more punters on their speed dial."
The Seahawks signed former USC punter Tom Malone this off-season, but he has since been released. With training camp opening up later this month, Ryan is the only punter on the Seahawks' roster.
