Redskins To Go After Haynesworth's Bonus Money

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Washington Redskins will attempt to recoup the $21 million dollar signing bonus they paid to defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth on April 1.

Schefter reports that Haynesworth decided to skip the team's mandatory mini-camp after the NFL Players Association assured him that the bonus money in his restructured contract was safe from forfeiture. Schefter writes that "a knowledgeable NFL source" who has reviewed Haynesworth's contract and the collective bargaining agreement said the issue is "open to interpretation".

"This is the type of case where a longshot may be given an extra hard look because it is so egregious", Schefter quotes his source as saying.

Earlier on Wednesday, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said that the team granted Haynesworth permission to seek a trade in February, but if he took the bonus money on April 1, the team expected to play whatever role the team asked him to play.

"Obviously, he took the check, so I was surprised that he wasn't here today," Shanahan said this this morning, according to the Washington Post. "Because I thought he did make that commitment and once he took that check, that he wanted to be a Washington Redskin, that he wanted to do the best thing for the Washington Redskins to help our defense and help our football team win. Obviously it didn't go in that direction, so quite disappointed."?
