During a promotional appearance for his book Win Forever, former USC and current Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll appeared on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., where he addressed the portion of the USC sanctions pertaining to the hiring of former NFL special teams coach Pete Rodriguez as a "consultant" in 2008, a hiring which put the Trojans over the coaching staff limit.
"We made a mistake," Carroll admitted to host Chad Dukes, via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com. "We made a mistake in the process in evaluating what a consultant was."
Paul Pringle of the Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday that Carroll's hiring of Rodriguez is going to make it difficult for USC to appeal the sanctions handed down by the NCAA.
"We missed it that it was a problem," Carroll said. "This is not something that was under wraps or behind the scenes. He was the guy that gave me my first coaching job ever. You know, to get paid full time. He was out living in the area, and was asking if he could be involved. I said, 'Let me check and see if we can do this.' We just miscalculated the way it was presented. It was never anything that was trying to be hidden."
