Nick Mangold Could Be Next Member of "Core Four" To Get Contract Extension

15 hours late on this, but Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reported last night that Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold would be the next member of the New York Jets' "Core Four" (Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, David Harris, and Darrelle Revis) to receive a contract extension.

Mangold is entering the last year in a five-year, $10.518 million contract he signed as the 29th overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft. Mangold (6-4, 305) has started all 64 of his regular season games in the NFL, and all four of the post-season games the Jets have played the last four seasons.

After briefly considering a training camp holdout, Mangold opted to report to Cortland, NY to help young guards Matt Slauson and Vladimir Ducasse, who are competing to replace Alan Faneca at left guard.

Mangold will earn $3.3 million in base salary in 2010, but earned $535,000 in 2009, so the 30% rule limits the annual increase of his salaries (base salary + option/roster bonuses) in any extension to $423,900 per season. The San Francisco 49ers showed how to get around this perceived impediment in the Patrick Willis deal, and Mangold is likely to receive a similar signing bonus.
