Bills to Name #1 QB Before Training Camp
By admin
Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News reports that Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey will have a pecking order at quarterback when training camp opens on July 29.
"We will probably, by the time we get to training camp, have somebody that is going to work with the first group, somebody that's going to work with the second group going in," Gailey said on Wednesday. "Just because if it happens that way [meaning the No. 1 wins the job], then you've got a leg up. If you try to get everybody equal shots from the first day of camp, then you probably get nobody ready, rather than getting three ready.
"So we'll probably...decide, for lack of a better term, a pecking order for camp and then go from there," Gailey said. "But it still will be open when we get to camp."
Trent Edwards, Brian Brohm, and Ryan Fitzpatrick have rotated during the Bills' OTAs and mini-camp, with sixth-round pick Levi Brown working as the fourth quarterback. Edwards and Fitzpatrick split the starts last year for the Bills, and neither were able to separate themselves from Brohm, a 2008 second-round pick by the Green Bay Packers who was plucked off the Packers' practice squad, and made one start late last season.
Smart money is on Edwards, but this competition truly is wide open.
