Why Major Firings Aren't Warranted This Offseason
The Packers injury-induced losing streak is leading to chatter about firing people like Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst, and even Jeff Hafley. But it's unwarranted.
By BruceIrons
After an exciting offseason that included a first round receiver and a historic trade, the Packers started the 2025 season hot. Through ups and downs, the Packers only losses (and non-win) in the first three months were mostly flukey low-odds affairs, primarily based off blocked or missed kicks.
But the team shook those off, along with shaking off a myriad of injuries, some temporary, some long-term. Losing Tucker Kraft (their most productive offensive player) and Devonte Wyatt (the soul of interior defensive line) were enough to knock the Packers our of top tier status from a talent perspective.
But Matt LaFleur and Jeff Hafley came up with great game plans that compensated for those losses and motivated the team to continue performing at an elite level.
In Week 13, the Packers hit stride, easily defeating the NFC #1 seed, despite key injuries to guys like the aforementioned Tucker Kraft and Devonte Wyatt, plus key players like Josh Jacobs, Elgton Jenkins, and Zach Tom. Things were looking up.
In Week 14, they went on the road against the AFC #1 seed and had a two score lead with the ball in the 2nd half against what might be the best defense in the league.
At that time, they were the hottest team in the NFL, 4-0 in the division, and a Super Bowl favorite, despite big injuries.
This was everything you wanted to see.
Matt LaFleur and Jeff Hafley were on a heater. Everything was rolling as this team hit on all cylinders in December.
Then disaster struck. Disaster well beyond the control of the coaches.
Christian Watson, their biggest weapon on offense, and the difference maker the offense needed in the wake of losing Tucker Kraft, went down. Shortly after, Micah Parsons, one of the leagues top two defenders, and a player who had absolutely transformed the defense, went down with a non-contact injury. Josh Jacobs aggravated his knee injury. Evan Williams went out on defense.
All of this on the road in the most physically demanding location in the league.
Missing WR1, TE1, RB1, C, and RT, the offense predictably faltered late on the road against a top team. On defense, missing DT1, SS, and the best speed rusher in the league, the wind was out of their sails, their gameplan was shot and they lost.
There's no shame in losing on the road to the 1 seed with all those injuries, especially when the opposing quarterback played the best game of his career.
The next week, going on the road against the now 2 seed in the NFC, missing key players, they played well. Then lost their starting QB to a cheap shot. Not long after, their backup quarterback was injured by another illegal hit as a defender fell on him with his full body weight and injured his throwing shoulder. Despite all those injuries, including both quarterbacks, the Packers had control of the game. The loss was dependent on, more than anything, a botched onside kick. Say what you want about Rich Bisaccia, but he had his guys in position to easily end the game. Romeo Doubs has great hands, as evidenced by multiple fingertip catches that game, and he just flubbed it,
Are injuries a lame excuse? Maybe.
Are they the reason the Packers are losing? Absolutely.
No team gets down to it's third quarterback, loses their two best offensive linemen, key offensive playmakers, multiple critical defenders, and Micah Freaking Parsons, and just keeps on winning. I don't care if you have Vince Lombardi coaching with Bill Belichick running the defense, that is insurmountable in today's game.
The fact that Packers played as well as they did given the circumstances is proof that they have good coaches.
They got bullied by Derrick Henry in a must-win game for the Ravens. They might end the season on a sour note loss to the Vikings. They might even go one and done in the playoffs.
But that's not enough to fire Matt LaFleur or Jeff Hafley. They made all the chicken salad they could and you won't find many coaches who could do better given the magnitude and impact of the players they lost to injury.
And Brian Gutekunst? He's the guy who assembled all that talent. He's not flawless, but he brought in Jordan Love, Malik Willis, Josh Jacobs, Tucker Kraft, Zach Tom, Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Edgerrin Cooper, Devonte Wyatt, Micah Parsons - he might have built the most talented roster in the NFL.
The last phase of the Packers season sucks.
The season most likely won't end well.
But, given the circumstances leading to that end, it doesn't mean Matt LaFleur, Jeff Hafley, or Brian Gutekunst deserve to get fired.

Thank you. It seems most sports enthusiasts who call-in to talk shows and read and, pardon, write sports blogs and in forums want change for change's sake. Maybe it's nervous energy met with a little obsession.

I agree. But unless they go deep into the playoffs I don’t support massive extensions either. There have been too many unforced errors in 24 and 25. If Matt and Brian won’t take a one year extension, then you let them play out the last year of their deals and reevaluate at this time next year.

That tack makes a lot of sense.
Add a year as a "Prove it" kind of move for both of them, without the Sword of Damocles hanging over their head in 2026.
If they don't improve, you just eat the year you added.

I hope both are done. I don't see enough improvement of the team by either of these guys to warrant extensions.

I couldn't agree with you more. Gutekunst has had to resort to expensive free agent signings and trades to make up for all of the poor #1's he's drafted over the years. LaFraud is just that, a fraud as a real head coach. We were told that LaFraud was this offensive guru. He's multiple failures (vs. Browns, etc.) suggest otherwise. Time to clean house cos this current crew is NEVER getting us to the Super Bowl. The only guy I would keep is Hafley.

I think MLF is a decent HC, my only problem with him is I don’t think he holds his players and assistants accountable. That leads to a lot of mistakes and slightly above average seasons.
I think Gutekunst has done a pretty good job signing free agents, but really, teams sign free agents to fill holes they created by not drafting well. And they end up paying the free agents 10-20 times more than they would be paying drafted players.
Fireable offenses? Probably not, but it would be nice to see good football in Green Bay again.

Therefore LaFraud is NOT a decent HC. A decent HC does just that...hold players and subordinates accountable.

100% agree! It’s not just the volume of injuries but the caliber of players that have had long term or season ending injuries. To have any chance of possible success in the playoffs, they must rest and protect as many starters as possible next week in a meaningless game against the Vikings.

GB spent big money bringing in the LAST piece (PARSONS) needed for a SB run....Yet we have a couple CB's that are back-ups on most winning NFL teams and a DL (Wyatt) that has missed a bunch of time at GB and no other starting NFL DL to go with him. Garys sack numbers are in a tailspin...so we effectively with Parsons injury have no NFL starting level DE's nor any DL that would start on a NFL team and CB group same. That is ALL GUTE.
Not using Kraft to the level a top 3 NFL TE1 is all ML. Picking Kraft was a great pick by Gute....so....there are good and really bad going on here. ML also has not made even a minimal effort to get the 1st round pick WR Golden the ball nearly enough as he has the best hands on the team....another baffling ML error. A 1 year contract to fix these major roster deficiencies and using the best personnel you have to a greater degree, even if you need to design a few plays for them specifically is needed by ML.....Then the Prez can sit back and check off the boxes as the GM and ML execute what is required of them....I have always thought the teams with the best DL will have the better back-ups and that is where I would probably start to build off others rosters....same with any strong position a team has...

I agree with you for the most part except the part about giving them a 1 year extension. Gutekunst's years of poor #1 draft picks is enough proof that this guy doesn't have the moxie to have a top quality draft. We all know that #1's are supposed to be the core players on your team and Gutey has had to resort to trades and free agent signings to cover up his bad drafts. As for LaFraud, he's had his seven years to show what he can do and I for one have seen enough. Time to get rid of these two.

I'm sure there are at least 18 other teams' fan bases having this conversation right now.
Rather than directly discussing the pros and cons of starting over with new coaches and GM maybe we should start by looking at the root causes, some of which were pointed out by Bruce. Then decide what should be done moving forward.
Injuries can be listed under bad luck, but season after season there has to be a reason for that bad luck to keep returning to the same team. Do good teams have ways to play around injuries? Have the most important parts of the team been built with the depth required after finding what injuries are most likely and have the most effect season after season?
Bruce mentioned a few games lost to last second field goals and missed field goals. Isn't that what happens to a team that doesn't put its opponent away? Isn't that another way of saying you weren't good enough season after season?

You know, we can blame injuries for some of our problems for sure. But I like to look at the Carolina game. They had injuries on their O line coming into the game. And then they lost 2 more guys early on and were down to their 3rd string linemen, and still they ran the ball down our throats.
Football is so much about attitude and I just don't see that fire in this team and that starts at the top.

Finally someone talking sense.
Replace a coach who won the NFC North back in 2021? Really?
Replace a GM who 11 months ago, after the Pack finished 11-6 and with the 7th seed, declared the urgency needed to be ramped up & the team needed to start playing for championships and then added Aaron Banks, Nate Hobbs, Matthew Golden and traded away the team’s 2026 & 2027 1st round picks so the team could (checks standings) corral another 7th seed?
Unthinkable that some bad fans question whether MLF going into his 8th year and Gutey going into his 9th year can lead the Pack to a Super Bowl?
What evidence other than the last 7/8 years of performance do the bad fans have to support their ridiculous position?

You kind of missed Micah Parsons, when discussing players added. Intentional to enhance your posts logic?
A few weeks ago, everyone was on the "He's worth every penny and then some" bandwagon. He's injured, but that doesn't take away how awesome that trade was to the Packers.

The fact that despite Micah playing great the team did not improve demonstrates the gaping holes (CB & DT) in the other parts of the roster.
Micah was a home run, but Banks, Hobbs, and Golden were all strikeouts … like too many of Gutey’s other moves during his 8 years controlling the roster.

Ken.....GB has not fixed the DL since Mike Daniels left so before 2018 we have been putting up with the joke of a run stop DL....That's a F-up going on 7 years plus.....so there is that, especially since our best DL is now in Dallas and now we have a 2 man void there.....so now we are even worse off. The OL went from an ALL Pro LT / pro bowler Jenkins/
Pro Bowl Center / Plug-in anyone RG and RT Turner who was serviceable. to the only real keeper in RT TOM. You tell me if our OL and DL are ready for a run??? I don't think so....That's Gutes job.

If you are in leadership, and you do not see the problems and identify how to correct them, THEN YOU ARE THE problem. So if I were Policy, I would evaluate whether the people who I evaluate are aware of, and are taking steps, to correct their own weaknesses / deficiencies.
Coaching: To me Lafleur's biggest deficiency is that he allows mediocre assistants too long to improve their processes. Special teams is a chronic issue and its lost this team games well before the injuries started to pile up. What is the plan to correct this recurring problem? The other chronic problem to me is the offensive line. Young players do not develop, and they are put slap-dash into new positions where they flounder and likely lose confidence. Some guys can do position switching (Jenkins, Tom), and some guys can't (i.e., Morgan). The other deficiency for Lafleur is his insistence on calling plays--But they might as well just fire him because he will never give that up.
Gute: Number one thing I would change is his enamor with long arms and fast running over freaking football instincts. We moved up to get LVN (i.e., Hercules) with Will McDonald still on the board. Not the fastest guy but he has 22 sacks since the draft to LVN's 8 sacks. There are many, many examples of this philosophy of Gute's turning 2nd days picks into 1st day picks (See Walker, Quay). I also think the above feeds into Gute's bewildering tendency to allow future needed positions to go unfilled. But one thing about drafting, I think Gute has gotten better. Ironically, after Hobbs and Banks his free agency hires seem to have gotten worse.
Maybe these aren't issue with this organization, I'm just another shmoo on the internet, but this is how you approach making an organization better.

I don't need to read this article to know what I see. A team that plays down to weak opponents, makes tons of mistakes that don't get corrected, underperforming veteran play, bad decisions on coaches, players, poor clock management and end of half/game strategy, on and on. MLF is a decent OC and playcaller, but he's getting outcoached and sometimes manhandled in too many games.

Finally an article with some common sense instead of the oh me oh my - lets start over again. Oh ya that is the Jets - Cleveland .
Now I do think that some accountability is required. For example how long are we going to have Oline problems without looking at those doing the Oline training - Stenavich -Butkus et al. Maybe a change is there. Also Special teams - we lost a game in Cleveland due to a special teams blunder. And we have overpaid according to results.
As far as the upcoming game - it will be a good test - not for our defense - although it might help if Ford can play to help jam the middle - and Vikes have QB issues. But they are one of the best defenses - so dont expect us to score at will. I still like us to win - but it just needs to be a high end practice type of game - to fix our OLine snaps etc and to get our Defense adjusted with the missing pieces. And dont forget Addision can take it to the house in a moment - like he did to kill the Lions ( thankfully for us).

This is why I question the future employment of MLF. He refuses to make the changes you have outlined above. This is why the baby with the bath water approach needs to be at least considered here. He hangs on to his "yes" men far to long and then hires inferior coaches who don't threaten his decision making. Look how long it took him to get Hafley in there. Meanwhile, we have a GM by name only who provided Hafley with nothing at CB and DL. There are just too many of the same mistakes being made game after game and year after year that have left this team the last 4 years with one missed playoff and three 7 seeds and one playoff win with zero NFC North titles. This personifies stagnation. When everything stays the same, EVERYTHING stays the same.

Sorry - if you are that disappointed and so crazy that you cant look at the facts - maybe the Jets organization would be better for you. Sometimes crazy is being crazy especially when you look at being in the playoffs 6 of 7 since 2019 - and the reward is firing everybody. Armchair quarterbacks/GMs are just that - otherwise they would be doing it.

Actually, if I'm being honest, your reply to me sounds more on the "crazy" side. Did I say fire everybody? I said "This is why the baby with the bath water approach needs to be at least considered here." At Least Considered is the key phrase. I wasn't screaming and ranting about starting a fire in GB like your Canadian feelings seemed to have triggered within. I laid out the simple "facts" that this team has not improved the last 4 years and have become stagnant. If you wanna flip out and send me to root for the Jets, I'll let that be your childish tantrum for today. I'm just fine having been a Packer fan my whole life through the 70's and until today. You pointed out GB having bad assistant coaches, who by the way have been protected through this whole process. Who's fault is that? I don't know if it's your lack of reading comp or you had a bad Christmas or something, but if you flipping out on me for no reason makes your day/life better, I'm here for it. I don't want you feeling angry or melancholy. Best wishes Sir.

Nonsense. This season they may have had more of an excuse than the others due to injuries, but the bottom line is this team can never manage to get over the hump and into the Super Bowl with Gute, MLF, and their perennially bad special teams. The Packers have not been playing at an "elite level" the last three games, so that's just a flat out falsehood.
It's not that Gute and MLF have been bad stewards, but they haven't been elite, either. Good (or maybe adequate), but not great. Bisaccia? What was the point? I'd drive him down to the nearest Greyhound bus stop and give him a bag of peanuts for his contribution to the organization.
Has the author noticed that the 49ers lost their best defensive player (4x All-Pro Fred Warner) for the season, their starting QB for half the season, and also don't have much of a pass rush? And yet their still playing for the #1 seed in another very competitive division.
So if you want to give the green light to the status quo, then hold no one accountable, fire no one, and blithely give big extensions and raises to all parties involved. Nothing will change.
BuckyBadger
December 30, 2025 at 10:36 am
You can go on 49er boards and you will find fans not happy there saying the same thing you are, Shanahan won't get them over the hump. If you like the status quo and losing the big game then keep him. Things were not looking all that rosy in the bay and rumblings of changes where being heard then they beat the Cards, Panthers, Browns, Titans and Colts now they are all good again. Fans are fickle and need to understand how to ride the ups and downs.

This was their version of All-In and we see a group of pro football players get their ass kicked @ Home against a one-dimensional team. R&R for the squad was last week when pride didn't matter. These two have proven they cannot steer the ship into safe harbors and find the gold. Move in a new direction; otherwise Ground Hog's Day will be playing in a stadium near you, endlessly.

Nothing proves to me more that you don't understand this game than calling for a head coaches job when he has the team outperforming itself. Most teams would be out of the playoffs having to deal with this many injuries but the team right up until end had a shot at the division and the #1 seed of the playoffs. The backup QB comes in and plays just as well as the starter, that right there is a sign you have a very good coach. Wait to next year and you see Willis in another system, he won't be looking as good. I also think if you fire MLF you will see a huge drop off in Love's play as well. MLF knows how to mask the limitations of these QBs and make them look like pro-bowlers. Packers would go a long time looking for a better coach and will start to look like a dysfunctional franchise to fire the coaching staff here.

Bucky, I think you would be singing a different tune if this team had missed the playoffs for the last 4 years. We have only been saved by adding the 7th seed the past 3 years.
I remember not that long ago, MLF had Rodgers throwing the ball 80% of the time. And when the team would lose, MLF would say, I should run the ball more. That was when we had an O line that could block.
Now we try to run the ball with an O line that can't block anybody. We can't even get 1/2 a yard on a QB sneak. I don't see that as progress at all. And after 8 years the team has consistently gotten worse and we keep seeing the same mistakes happening over and over again.
THAT is on the coaches.

Wyatt is one choice he got right. He would be close to dbl digits on the yearly sack count if Brinson didn't flop on his ankle. He is a 3 tech with solid quickness. He wasted the draft capital from the Adams/Rodgers trades.
The secondary was an injured Jaire and an All-PRO hired gun in McKinney. Williams was solid at Fresno State and he plays the game with attitude. As a matter of fact, he has out-performed DeJean. The Bullard choice over Kim Kinchens, or Bullock made no sense. Valentine should not have been on this team after the Philly Ole'. The three pick going to a gadget guy who is brittle in lieu of a CB. He went with the Georgia no-shows for the inside game. Whiff. His guys didn't show up when the going got tough. I still take Watson #22 and Wyatt #29. The 2nd round would have yielded Tre McBride and Abe Lucas. Think about it. Best to bring in a fresh approach and a coach who knows how to manage a game. Special teams is about field position, kicking the FG and knowing where to line up. You punt the ball when you are positioned on your own side of the field--elementary.

Come on man - sometimes you get lucky and sometimes not. Look at San Fran - they traded 3 first rounders for a number 1 QB Trey Lance - and ended up with Mr Irrelevant Brock as a franchise QB. Most GM's would be fired for doing that. Gute has traded 2 first rounders and our aging but still productive -Kenny Clark - but at least Parsons was a big part of getting us to the playoffs and Clark isnt --but we could use him in the middle now. For the last few years we have not been a good tackling machine but gradually we have turned that around. Do we need some improvement and need to change some coaches - Oline Dbacks and maybe Special teams - but come on - WE ARE IN THE DANCE - 18 teams are NOT geesh

In the last 6 years only six teams have played in the SB.
KC, PHL, SF, TB, CIN & Rams. All of those teams are better at Drafting & Developing Talent.
Some of those may have only had a couple of Stellar Drafts and some in my opinion (KC, PHL & SF) have been consistently much better than we have. Is this a GM issue or Coach or both?
I think it’s time to let Average Gute go.

Most of GB media has already signaled the return of Gute which is a failure to hold to account the very man who chose too many questionable players and systematically weakened the team, esp. the OL, DL and CB room. There is a level of spin control that requires a fan to suspend logic and judgement which I find confusing and exhausting I feel MLF needs to go as well. All of this mismanagement stems from Murphy's power grab in 2018 and the Brain Trust doesn't wish to change.--that's all. They are super comfy in their big leather chairs interacting with each other on the football committee, scratching each other's backs, getting paid big bucks, drinking Scotch by the fire and making certain the seats are filled just enough and the revenue high.
I know, as a 20+ year fan, that I have been hugely frustrated by the repeated promises made by this team in the last 8 years. Team does not resemble the team I signed up with 20 years ago. I am actually bored and tired of the lack of honest evaluation of the GM/HC/players. If Gute is re-signed, I will leave because I don't want to invest 4 more years in more of the same. If Hafley leaves, I will likely follow him as I continue to love football. It's not easy to leave a team as there are many attachments.

Let’s just accept for the sake of argument that Matt Lafleur is an idiot, a mediocrity and a loser. (Did i get that right?). Now, how did a mediocre idiot loser ever become coach in the first place? He must have pulled the wool over Murf’s eyes.
For Murf to have been fooled by the likes of Lafleur suggests that he himself was a grade A dunce as well as the evil genius you all have made him out to be. Murf is gone now, but how astute can the hand picked successor to a dolt be? He’s likely to be just as clueless and hire some coach du jour who is every bit as incompetent and pusillanimous as Lafleur.
Drink up folks, it’s hopeless. Prosit!

I guess I'll throw my .02 in here regarding the upcoming firing v extensions coming up during the upcoming offseason.
Personally, I feel Gute is probably safe. Regardless of all the naysayers, this team has better than average talent. Is there an NFCN team with better overall talent? If so, as they say in Missouri, show me.
MLF is a little murkier for me. Yes, he has the stellar overall regular season record...76-39-1, although the bulk of that was accomplished his first 3 years. Playoffs, not so much...3-5. How many signature wins has he had the last 3-4 years? Dallas in the '23 playoffs? I'm sure there are others, but none come to mind immediately.
I feel he has a below average staff, which falls on him obviously. And his in-game decisions, clock management, challenges, etc all have been questionable. Prime example, going for it on 4th and 1 on his own 35. Not all 4th and 1 situations are the same. It's one thing to go for it on the opponents 35, where if you miss, a field goal is still an option if you fail. On your own 35, which I totally disagreed with anyway, is a hell of a risk. At least come up with something imaginative that the opponent isn't expecting. But instead a predictable run up the gut with a less than healthy Jacobs? And their red-zone play calling has been atrocious.
If they are going to extend Matt, which I have mixed feelings about. I would hope it would come with conditions. Mainly that he overhauls his staff, including Steno and Rich B., along with several position coaches.
One thing to keep in mind. If the league hadn't expanded the playoff rosters to 7 teams, GB's last playoff appearance would have been in 2021.
If I had my druthers, I would keep Gute, give him full GM responsibilities, including who he wants as HC. If it's LaFleur, so be it. If not, let him pick his successor.

Not a word about poor roster construction?---Essentially no DL, CB or OL xcept Tom??
You should pay more attention, at least try to not be so obvious.
It is obvious, while on this site, that MLF is being set up -there are 4 flying monkeys who post BS on the site on the daily who give it away.
MLF needs to go and so does Gute, but it won't happen.
Fans should be prepared for 3-4 years of decline, much of which could have been prevented with decent roster choices

I realize I'm replying to an individual who self-reported contacting Aaron Nagler because she felt MLF was being treated unfairly on the CHTV message board, but I'll offer this to you anyway.
If the Packers (or any entity) wanted to influence public opinion, why wouldn't they use bots and AI to to mimic human behavior and create a false sense of consensus on*all* social media platforms? Wouldn't they use algorithms to generate compelling content rather than much of what we see here? Do you honestly believe the gang at 1265 is paying to four people to try to shape opinions here?

I do agree on MLF. His staff and offensive scheme seem to have plateaued somewhat. Was watching the 9ers and Bears Sunday night and the amount of motion that San Fran has in their offense amazing. Really well choreographed and executed.
I did, and I bet many others did as well, thought that is what Matt would bring with him. Gave him a hall pass on the first 3 with Rodgers still here, but really expected it to kick in by now. He really needs to shine the remainder of the season to keep his current job.
I think the only reason MLF went for it on his own 35, was he realized his defense was well, defenseless against the Ravens run game. While the quick strike score after the initial Ravens' touchdown was exiting, it put the defense right back on the field after a 13 or 14 play drive at the start of the game, and the defense never recovered

To be fair on MLF's staff- which I do think he has had more control of for the last couple of years- we can't 100% know if it's all his hires for assistants or not.
You have to keep in mind that we know as a matter of record that when MLF was hired he was mandated by Murphy to keep Mike Pettine on the staff, for instance.
Granted, Joe Barry didn't work out, and I'm fairly certain that was a MLF pick all the way.. but also keep in mind he was originally targeting Jim Leonhard, who very well may have seen the dysfunctional power structure in GB and politely said "Thanks, but I'll pass."

Speaking of predictable run up the guts remember the game earlier this season where the opponents defense would call out our plays according to the formation the Packers were in ? That in itself is another reason to fire MLF.

I'm not sure I would trust Gute to make the coaching decision. I have not been impressed by his drafting. Sure he hit on a couple, and has made a couple of good FA signings over the years. But as a draft and develop team he has seriously ignored critical parts of the team when needs were glaring, especially the lines and at CB. And then we draft players and keep them on the roster and they never play, Monk, Oladapo, for instance, or are ignored in the scheme, Golden, as recent examples.
Signing Parsons was a good move and was supposed to get this team over the hump, but with less talent surrounding him the team did not improve by much. This year, even before the injuries this team took a big step backwards. Now that can be blamed on coaching and personnel decisions as well. But I just see a lesser level of talent now than in the past.

If the NFL hadn't realigned to a four division set up in 1967 the Packers wouldn't have had an Ice Bowl and third consecutive Championship Game win.

I'm confused. After 6, 7 , 8 years of Gute and Lafleur I think we have a good idea of their respective ceilings. Now why are we thinking that if we replace both of them. We would get what the Jets have. Over the last 30 years our GM and HC searches have worked out pretty well. I would like the Packers to be better than backing into the #7 seed.

I grew up watching the Packers in the 70s and 80s. Back then it was fun to see them almost make the playoffs, or occasionally beat the Bears. In December you could get free tickets to any home game. Especially if it was the 3-12 Lions vs the 3-12 Pack. I will take MLF over Gregg, Infanty, or Starr(as headcoach!) everyday. Be careful what you wish for.

I guess you have to ask yourself, is the talent on this team better than a 7th seed? Or is there a lack of talent to get to that next level?

I think that we need to see how this season ends before we determine what should happen to Gute and MLF.
If the team finishes the season 0-5 I think that Ed Policy needs to seriously consider hiring a new GM. Then let the new GM decide what happens with MLF and the coaching staff. At the least Policy should return the Packers to their previous organization structure and put Gute or a new GM in charge of all football operations like most other NFL franchises have done.
As for MLF if the Packers finish the season 0-5 I think it will be time to move on. Seven seasons as the HC with the last 3 seasons as the 7th seed only because the league changed the playoff format. What message does it send to the players about what is acceptable for the team's accomplishments? But let's see what happens over the next 2 games.
I have posted for years here at CHTV that beyond the above we need to remember and consider that the Packers are a Non-Profit organization. This means that the Board is focused on 2 major priorities. First revenue stream which is covered for the Packers by the NFL revenue sharing and the fact that the stadium is sold out for about 20 years or more. The second is preventing any major public relations scandals. Those 2 facts facts drive non-profit organizations and either enable them to survive or determine their downfall.
The Packers board is likely fine that they have a solid, steady revenue stream and a scandal free organization. From what I know of the Board members they are either local or regional business people who are happy to be a part of the Packers history and tradition and who are satisfied having an NFL playoff team regardless of how far the team goes in the playoffs. They are not accountable to their shareholders or their employees or the fans. Therefore we get to a root cause of the Packers seasonal malaise, specifically lack of accountability. It's pervasive throughout the organization all the way down to the players on the field.
It's been nearly 60 years since the end of the Lombardi era and the Packers have claimed 2 league championships. Hardly a reason that supports the Titletown moniker which the Packers and Green Bay once proudly and appropriately earned.
I'm glad that the Packers are a fan owned team rather than a team owned by some narcissistic owner. It's a major reason why I have remained a long distance fan all these years. However I do not support the lack of management or accountability which seems to permeate throughout the organization to the point where it impacts the results on the field.
Having said that let's see how the season ends and what Ed Policy decides to do based on the final results. But IMO changes should not be ruled out for the sake of maintaining the status quo and hoping things will get better next season or the next or the next. Thanks, Since '61

As always, great analysis Since '61.
While I don't post a ton here, I have been off the MLF and Gute bandwagon for some time. Losing a home playoff game as a #1 to a southern team is something I could never get over. Then not correcting obvious special teams issues costing them another home playoff game should have ended MLF's tenure here. Now I've heard it reported they have lost more games at home in 15 months than Holmgren did his entire time in GB. Oy
It may have been reasonable to allow MLF to continue and see what he could do with Love. Now we've seen it. A 7th seed and one and done should not be the standard.
To me, the GM has forced the coaching to be elite, which they are not. Starting over should not be feared.

I've haven't seen too many of your posts this year. But as always, they are written well. But unless the Packers win at least 2 playoff games, nothing will change. What are the odds of that? Will it depend how badly they lose? Will 2 more games erase 7 years?
I find it very unlikely that Policy shakes things up in his first year. It's a good ol' boys management structure. Why else weren't Drayton and Barry fired mid year? It's pretty clear over the years that this is the case - as you point out (lack of accountability).
The big issue is - with MLF up for a contract extension, will he get it or will Policy try to extend him for a show me year? Will MLF walk away if that's what he is offered? With Parsons and Wyatt back, and a little improvement, this team would be a win for any would be head coach and they could have their pick.

Sound analysis. One minor quibble: non-profit content with playoffs, Cub fans would like to have a word.
My belief is both Gute and MLF need to go. Underperformance is the word I would use to describe the past 2 years. The axiom is if you’re standing still, you’re falling behind.

Since the Ron Wolf era began in 1991 (34 years ago) – the Packers have won just 2 Super Bowls. With Wolf winning one and Ted Thompson the other. While the other Packers GMs - Mike Sherman and Brian Gutekunst – having combined for 12 seasons – with 0.
Furthermore, other graduates from Ron Wolf U. - namely John Dorsey, Reggie McKenzie and Elliot Wolf – who became NFL GMs - in 15 seasons (combined) – have 0 Super Bowl Championships. So totaling both the internal and external GMs from the Wolf line – in 49 seasons have produced 2 SB Championships.
In horse racing – bloodlines often determines Champions. When analyzing the Wolf (blood)line / management tree since 1991 – it is clear that while it can produce good teams – it does not produce Super Bowl Champions. Providing only a 4% probability (and decreasing).
If the GBP are truly serious about winning SBs – then they must look beyond even the Coach and GM – to the actual philosophy and paradigm of creating a Championship team. If so, then wholesale and fundamental changes will be necessary - that will require the import of new thinking and personnel.. Thus initiating a new era.
In a few weeks - Packer fans will discover whether Ed Policy will continue the conservative management style that will support the status quo. Or the bold leadership to challenge it. Unfortunately, Packers history has shown that it is more likely to be the former than the latter.

I think Packer fans have become spoiled. We accept as a right our team being in the playoffs and competing for championships year after year. Packer fans tend to think that changing the GM / HC will automatically lead to upgrades. Nothing is ever guaranteed look at the Lions this year, Tampa Bay could easily miss the playoffs this year despite playing in a weak division. We have been fortunate to have these 2 leading our organization. They both are highly ranked for the jobs they've done in numerous polls. They are not perfect. I don't like many of LaFleaur's 4th down calls, taking his foot off the gas at times. However I lived through the 70's & 80's and have no desire to return to those times, so I would challenge all of you to be careful what you wish for, as change isn't always for the best
