Why 27-2 Stomping Matters for Packers
Preseason is for answers. None came in a weak effort.

Yeah, it’s only pre-season, and the Packers sat 31 players including virtually every starter and many twos. But it’s not meaningless, which you could see with every expression of frustration on Matt LaFleur’s face.
The Packers traveled to the Mile High City and performed poorly in a joint practice Friday and again in Sunday night’s game. Little had gone wrong for this team since it nearly knocked off the 49ers back in January, and the last few days could well be an aberration that is quickly forgotten. But important questions need to be answered and tasks accomplished at this point on the calendar, from roster decisions to technique refinement and momentum building. Squint hard and you can’t see how Green Bay made progress on any of them, in all three phases:
Backup quarterback? Neither Sean Clifford nor Michael Pratt distinguished himself. Clifford had the tougher task, facing Denver’s first-teamers, but 6-10 for 43 yards and a pick is hardly statement-making. Some of that can be chalked up to vanilla play calling (in this case by OC Adam Stenavich), and stats matter less than how the quarterback reacts to pressure and performs out of structure. Clifford, who played until the last 30 seconds of the first half, did little save for one decent scramble for 11 yards, and took an awful third-down sack instead of throwing the ball away.
Pratt, with Denver’s defensive starters removed and Clifford leaving the door wide open for him to stake his claim to the number 2 slot, didn’t. Pratt clearly has the bigger arm, but didn’t show signs of understanding when to throw hard and when to apply touch. Even less forgivable, to my eye, was his habit of looking at his primary target from the beginning of the play to the end. He ended the night 10-16 for 52 yards.
Number 3 cornerback? Carrington Valentine didn’t play, leaving Kalen King the opportunity to challenge him and at least get a toehold on the #4 slot after flashes in training camp. But he showed lackadaisical effort as a tackler.
Backup running back? AJ Dillon, who has yet to show his early-career form has returned, sat, giving Emanuel Wilson the lion’s share of the work. He carried 13 times for 41 yards, not exactly a turf-burning performance. The offensive line owns some of this, but it means the Packers still don’t have answers behind Josh Jacobs.
Kicker? Nope. When all you get in the way of scoring is a safety, it’s hard to have a kicker competition. There was one field-goal try, which Greg Joseph missed from the 47.
Wide receiver 5? Camp darling Grant DuBose had nothing on two targets, including a drop, though he did have a nice tackle for special teams on a Bronco kick return. Malik Heath was the team leader with three receptions on six targets, including a nice crosser. Bo Melton had two catches for 10 yards on three targets. Again, no real answers.
Meanwhile, we saw little of what a Jeff Hafley defense looks like, and Denver quarterbacks Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham carved up the Packers in the middle of the field on short and intermediate throws. Broncos running backs combined for an average of four yards per carry.
Again, this is one bad outing in the preseason. It happens, and there will be many warning about overreaction, which is fair. But even with the early mismatch of starters versus backups, the Packers largely beat themselves. They lacked intensity, focus and effort, the holy trinity of things that make coaches crazy and are hard to fathom with jobs on the line. Even with twos playing ones, you expect to see some individual plays that shine, and there were none with the exceptions of the safety by DE Zach Morton and nice sacks by DE Brenton Cox and DE Brevin Allen.
In the end, perhaps this is a positive thing. The Packers might well have been drinking in the hype around this team a little too much. Now is a better time for a splash of cold water in the face than after the regular season starts.

Not really worried about it. Other than back up, quarterback, back up offensive tackle and kicker. I think it’s entirely possible. None of those players are currently on the roster.

Other than depth at every most important position, and every position in all three phases?
I'm not sure that a lack of player effort is what happened?

I am way more worried now after that game than i was before the game. I remember last year when in training camp everyone raved about how good our defense was and it turned out that it just looked so good because the offense was so bad. By the end of the year they turned the offense around but this looks a lot like the same thing to me. They had a bad practice on Friday and it didn't go any better Sunday. Every year by playoff time these backups are needed because of injuries to starters and if our backups are this bad it doesn't bode well for us. While i wouldn't expect them to beat the starters that Denver played, i would expect them to be able to stop a couple of plays, especially the runs. I just hope this is a wake up call to the coaches to understand what these players can and cannot handle. I know they'll not look this bad all year but in this league you cannot get to far behind the leaders and expect to catch them.

It's nice to see everyone in mid-season form on the Packers are terrible mode! Defense sucks, offense sucks, and coaching sucks!
Holy suffering hell, it was a preseason game with no starting players on the field. Take a deep breath and relax!

Losing a game is one thing, but looking like you don’t care in a group that is all bubble players raises legitimate questions.
Apart from a handful of players: Hopper (who was impressive), Wilson who made at least a couple of plays, ran hard and made key protection pick ups all night despite getting zero help, Mosby and a couple of recent DE acquiring who might have increased their PS chances, virtually no one helped themselves.
A few, like Brooks, Melton and Rochell didn’t harm them. Many others did. Kalen King had a very poor night and so did Dubose. Heath had one very poor drop but otherwise was the best receiver probably, but some, like Wayne and Hicks were essentially unable to show anything. As to the OL, it’s starting to look like it’s more than the players individual talent that is an issue.

Totally missing the point. The Bears had a preseason game with backups in that looked much better than any minute our backups played. Too much is dismissed, imo. It's the preseason. They were the 2s and 3s. Stop overreacting. Blah blah blah. These are professional football players vying for a roster spot. You wouldn't have thought that watching that " keystone kops" performance. It reminded me of the first halves of last seasons first halves where they'd come out and put up 33 yds of offense and you would wonder if you were watching an NFL game.
Inexcusable effort.

GBP and fans had better hope none of their starting OL players get hurt this season. The second and third string guys, all fighting for their jobs, could not open a hole, for any of our RBs, to save their lives. The Packers are gonna need to buy new tackling dummies, after this game, as MLF should be putting his defensive players through the grinder, for their lacksidaisical tackling efforts, in the Denver game. Playing as poorly as they did, should make cut downs a breeze. These guys must be GenZ guys--wanting a paycheck, without doing the work. Where's the work ethic? Where's their pride? That was not GB Packer Football we witnessed, last night.

I'm not sure that ineffective run blocking means we have no O line depth. The combination of players they used couldn't get it done in that matchup. Coaches tried no in game adjustment once that was established, and kept slamming our RBs into brick walls. I'm pleasantly surprised none are hurt, and suspect they're all worse for that wear.
I would have liked to have seen our coaches practicing their in game adjustment, it's been a weakness for years and that's my biggest concern. There was still substantial O line talent on the bench, even without starters. Of course I'm not privy to their game plan, maybe they created an ideal learning opportunity for everyone? I don't see it.
At least the goal of no injuries was almost met: Goforth got a concussion, nothing else reported. No new injuries from the joint practice, right?
Coldworld

The ones couldn’t get it done in joint practice either. I fear it’s as much the coaching and philosophy as the players.
I’ve seen bad preseason games, but I’ve seldom seen a game full of bubble players where so few seemed up for competing. The lack of visible desire was striking.

My theory on poor offensive play.... perhaps MLF let Stenavich call the offensive plays during all Bronco scrimmages and the game. That might explain the poor play by the first team offense during the week day practices.
IMHO Stenavich is a good O-Line, but as O-Coordinator he is the poster child for the Peter Principle wearing Green and Gold.

I didn't watch the game but for me the fact that the Packers did not suffer any serious injuries during a meaningless pre season game is a good as and may be even better than a win in a preseason game. One more week to get through and the Packers can begin the season with a healthy team. That's more important than winning preseason games
Start the season healthy and go from there. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

August 19, 2024 at 09:16 am
That indeed was a major goal, and it was almost met. Goforth had a concussion, no other injury reported that I'm aware of. No injury in the joint practice? Clifford threw his interception immediately after taking a helmet to helmet hit, and yes that was a THROWN interception rather than an amazing defensive play. I'm not sure he wasn't still rattled by that hit, but I don't want to use it as an excuse for the bad throw and I imagine he doesn't either.
Seeing the stat that Bo Melton went 2 receptions on 3 attempts makes me feel a little better, I guess. It seemed worse watching it.
Our O line and the coaches lack of in-game adjustments there was our biggest offensive failure IMHO. There was still lots of O line talent on the bench, even aside from starters. I don't know how much time is appropriate to let the same line flail ineffectively, nor do I see how it created a great opportunity for any of our offensive players.
Hopefully our coaching staff has all this in hand ...

I wonder how well any 2nd and 3rd team players would do against another’s 1st team? My guess, not very well. In the 2nd half, When playing against their non 1st teamers the Packers defense looked very good. I was impressed with Cox, Welch, Ester, Hopper & Mosby. Oladapo seemed to make some good plays as well. Hopper might end up being a stud he hits the hole fast and hard.
For the offense, they left much to be desired. The depth at OL is concerning. Because of that it’s hard to rate the RB, TE & WR’s play. If Bak gives GB a healthy thumbs up and he will sign a low salary contract they should bring him back as a back up.
SicSemperTyrannis
August 19, 2024 at 09:21 am
I'm not ready to say our depth at O line sux. Certainly the combination coaches put out there couldn't get anything done in that matchup. I don't understand why they didn't try any other player combinations, there was still substantial talent on the bench, even without starters.
Of course if Bakh would come back cheap to sit as reserve that'd be great, but I don't see that as a realistic hope?

August 19, 2024 at 09:32 am
Not very well is probably correct, as least as a collective group. I would like to see a #2 OL (even if he is playing against Denver's starters) look like he might not be a major liability if that player had to start for GB during the season. I did not see a backup tackle do that. I did not see that in the backup guards. Ditto center.
I did see a couple of defensive backups who looked like they would not be a disaster if they had to start. Cox, Mosby, Hopper, and the outside corners except for Kalen King (who I still like). Disappointed in Brooks and Wooden because I thought they could hold up against starters. Those two will be expected to play against starters in the regular season, after all.

After eking out a 9-8 record last season and beating the questionable Cowboys in the playoffs, it seems the Packers should not be so impressed with themselves.
Last night was an embarrassment of ugliness.
To think that the Packers can slumber through August and suddenly turn it on in September seems like asking for heartache.
***
If the Packers don't want to try during the preseason, then have a press conference and let us know to ignore them until the regular season.
Please, let us know if we should if we should tune out for the Ravens game. Give the ticket holders the option of getting a refund in advance.
Maybe CHTV should just take a break and go blank for the next three weeks.

There was a lot of piling on with negativity to my comments of last night, perhaps somewhat of a mob mentality.
It's interesting how people have a big problem with me and little problem with the debacle by the Packers.
I'm wondering how any fans could consider that game as bearable to endure, or deem it as in any way acceptable.
To me, it was terrible and intolerable -- either through ugly incompetence, or disrespect to the fans.
If I'm a little too angry at the Green Bay Pansies of last night under Coach Matt LaFlower, it still seems better than not being angry enough.

Reality check, especially now, the pre-season doesn’t mean much when determining how the team as a whole performs during the season. Keep in mind, many won’t even be on the roster or even practiced together all that much so how can the whole team actually play like a team? Just because our 2’s and 3’s didn’t look good against their 1’s doesn’t mean there wasn’t good plays by players. Also, it provides for learning and training this week. And, lastly it gives Mlf more info on who to cut, make the team or practice squad. Don’t look too much into it!

This stuff about "not enough effort" is crazy talk. These are highly competitive young men with a shot at their dream, and the wealth that goes with it. And you're going to expect me to say that the coaches did, or didn't,do something that changed that? That literally makes no sense whatsoever.
Our second string line doesn't look very good right now. I don't recall when training camp opened but I'm thinking we've had like a dozen practices and two exhibition scrimmages. By the end of October, they 'll have had another 40 practices or so, and maybe some game action. They might be better by then. Actually, they should be better by then.

How did the Packers go from a record of 1-10-1 in 1958 to a record of 7-5 in 1959, then a trip to the NFL Championship Game in 1960, then five championships in the next seven years?
How did Paul Hornung go from being a bust and a joke to having a bust of himself enshrined at the Hall of Fame in football glory?
How did Ray Nitschke go from being unstable to the rock of the Packers defense, and also a hall-of-famer?
How did Bart Starr go from being worse than Daniel Jones, Justin Fields, and Zach Wilson to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and a member of the Hall of Fame?

Ah, the mysteries of life. . . .
If we allow mediocrity to go without criticism, if we accept excuses or even make excuses for others, then we get what we get.
In the history of our very own cherished team, the Green Bay Packers, we have the ultimate story of the worst losers becoming the greatest winners -- and yet we don't seem to take note and assess its relevance for today.
Leatherhead, what do you think Vince Lombardi would make of your comment?
My hunch is that he would find it less than . . . well, not very apt, let's put it that way.
I say this as one of your supporters at CHTV who always deals with you respectfully.
***
For that matter, I deal respectfully, even kindly, with everyone here.
Yet, so many are so ready to criticize me so quickly and so meanly.
It seems some even want to belittle me with the snark of self-superiority.
I truly wonder how many of them wanted Aaron Rodgers to still be sticking around with the Packers, and then were ready to get rid of Jordan Love just last November.
***
In this day and age, it seems reason and kindness don't get a person very far.
Also, there seems a troubling tendency to go along with the crowd too easily.
People are quick to criticize, even to pile on; and so slow to defend someone who questions the crowd mentality.
In a way, it hurts more when the better posters here at CHTV -- as far as football knowledge and general good sense -- seem to ignore me as an annoyance they would just as soon have go away. They're not part of the putting down of the unpopular guy, but do go along with it.
Please excuse me if I'm more than a little downhearted at it all -- I must be the one hysterical in overreacting and pathetically hypersensitive.
***
P.S. I am grateful for the fans here who have been supportive of my comments over the years. It has meant a lot. Perhaps it gets too wearisome to stick up for me too often.
P.P.S. It seems that not only do the Packers have to make a major decision this week about what kind of team they want to be, but that the fans here at CHTV need to decide if this site is going to be an echo chamber of self-congratulation that snidely drives away anyone who dares to think independently.
Is CHTV going to be a jovial tavern of camaraderie that welcomes one and all, or a dank bar of sad regulars who routinely and roundly discourage others from joining in?

Neither you, nor I, knows what Lombardi would think. If your point is that he was a real good coach who engineered the Packers of the 60s, then I agree. Most coaches are not Lombardi, not even the ones who think they aren't. I know he wanted to relentlessly pursue perfection and catch excellence. That doesn't mean he didn't have any average players. Remember Chuck Mercein? And it doesn't mean he never lost a game that could have been won. I know that if Lombardi had to assemble 69 guys to play a 17 game season, with NFLPA restrictions on practice, and free agency and the salary cap, that a guy as intelligent as Lombardi would adapt.
One final point on that. Belichick won many times with Brady, not so much without him. And Lombardi won a lot of games with Starr. Maybe the QB was making the HC look better than he actually was. Food for thought.
As far as the Packers having to make a major decision about the kind of team they want to be.......that decision was already made a long time ago. Murphy/Gutekunst/LaFleur have had an exceptional record since 2019, better than most of the teams in the league. They understood how they could squeeze the remaining juice out of Rodgers while preparing Love, and then use the draft to put a receiving corps around him.
Swisch
August 19, 2024 at 09:56 pm
It seems safe to say that Lombardi would have been boiling over with anger at the pathetic showing of the Packers against the Broncos.
He didn't accept mediocrity from his players at any time.
To not strive with full effort all of the time was a crime to Lombardi.
It's one thing to get beat doing your best, another thing to get beaten up by not really showing up.
Letting things slide in the preseason is what gets teams beat in the playoffs.
For three years in a row the Packers under Rodgers and LaFleur and Gute ended the season with disastrous losses at Lambeau Field -- against the Bucs, then the 49ers, then the Lions.
Unless fans want that kind of heartbreaking pain once again in January, I would strongly suggest not taking things so lightly in August.

I can't say I am that worried over the result of a preseason game but a number of trends are concerning:
1. We need a better/veteran backup QB. We got spoiled last year with Love's good health. I would never want to see either Clifford or Pratt playing against good teams in the regular season.
2. Our OL depth is suspect. Why not offer Bakh a reasonable contract and tie down LT? What is Newman still doing on this team...?
3. Why can't we find a consistent kicker who is better than what we have? Under 50 yards, I never was in doubt with Crosby. Now...?

I turned off the uninspiring mess the NFL tries to sell as important very early on. What I have learned from watching preseason tidbits and reading media and fan reactions is this: Caleb Williams is a generational talent sure fire HOF lock as MVP of multiple seasons and superbowls. His talent is only exceeded by Bo Nix who is coached by the All HOF coaching in Denver. The packers are 1980s bad and the Vikings might as well skip the season when McCarthy went down. Settle down, this is all meaningless vanilla offense and defense called by backup play callers and executed by combinations of players who will never see the field together in the same configuration. And all for the same in stadium entry fee as week 9 of the regular season…
