Time for Musgrave and Golden to Take Over
Opportunity knocks for forgotten pass catchers
By GregMeinholz

The news that absolutely no one wanted to hear dropped on Monday. Green Bay Packers breakout tight end, Tucker Kraft had torn his ACL in Sunday's loss to the Panthers and would miss the remainder of the 2025 season. Kraft was well on his way to a possible All-Pro season and was the heart and soul of Green Bay's offense. He was second on the team in receptions, first in targets, first in receiving yards, and first in receiving touchdowns. It's a tough loss, and Kraft will be missed, but just like any injury, the season goes on, and it's the next man up.
The only Packers pass catcher that comes close to Kraft's production, is Romeo Doubs. Doubs has done his job this season in being a reliable target for Jordan Love and the once-stone-faced receiver has seemed to have found his fire. In the first half of this season, on third, or even fourth down for that matter, you could expect the football to end up in the hands of either Kraft or Doubs for the conversion. You may still see Doubs as Jordan Love's go-to, but someone else needs to step up alongside him.
Luke Musgrave
With Tucker Kraft going down, all eyes easily turn to TE2, Luke Musgrave. A coincidence in all of that, which I'm sure Musgrave may rather have it be forgotten, is that he wasn't always TE2. After being drafted in the second round in 2023, with Kraft drafted in the third, Musgrave was above Kraft on the depth chart going into their rookie season. Musgrave proceeded to put together a good start to his rookie campaign with 33 catches for 341 yards and a touchdown in the first ten games. But after suffering a lacerated kidney in mid-November of 2023, he missed the next six games.
That's when Tucker Kraft took over. Musgrave returned for the final game of the season and the playoffs, in which he had three receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown in the playoff victory against the Cowboys, but then his 2024 season was derailed due to ligament damage in his left ankle and he never really got a chance to produce, playing in seven games with a limited role. So far, 2025 has been much like early 2024 for Luke Musgrave. On the field, but a non-factor, only posting nine catches for 88 yards in eight games. But that could all change.
Musgrave was once billed as a match-up nightmare for defenders. Standing at 6'6 253 lbs, he can box out most defensive backs, and is too quick for a linebacker to cover. Outside of his injuries, though, what has Musgrave lacked that Tucker Kraft possesses as a pass catcher?
One could argue that Luke Musgrave lacks that "killer instinct." Tucker Kraft has emerged as a tight end that not only attacks and claims the ball, but will attack defenders who try to take him down afterward. This isn't to say that Luke Musgrave is "soft" or anything of that nature, it's that we just haven't seen that from him yet. There's the Matt LaFleur "Musgrave stayed on his feet!" joke that came out in 2023, and number 88 hasn't been able to shake it. After the catch, he's often hitting the deck or is taken down by the nearest defender. If he's making that catch 10-15 yards or more downfield, it's not as much of an issue. But if he's easily going down after a three yard grab, that's not what you want from a tight end.
Musgrave has all the intangibles to be a big receiving threat. This is his opportunity to show everyone that he is up for the challenge and he can be everything everyone thought he could become.

Matthew Golden
Despite the rookie first round wide receiver being tied for third on the team in receptions with 23, and third in receiving yards with 262, there's a lot of discourse around Matthew Golden's usage so far this season. Everyone ranted and raved about how great he looked in training camp and how crazy it was to see a rookie receiver with such poise and dedication to learning his role on the team. Packer nation was ready for Matthew Golden to quickly become that undisputed WR1 that the media was always saying they lacked. But after eight games, it's just not there.
To make matters worse, it's evident when you look back on the tape, that Golden is getting open, Jordan Love just isn't getting him the ball. Is it a lack of trust? Is it favoritism on the part of Matt LaFleur, or is the coach holding him back? All the speculative explanations are out there in the media, and LaFleur has done his best to knock them all over. It's the nature of the beast, so to speak, when you have a lot of guys that can make plays, some games you'll get it, some games you won't. They're not going to force-feed players the ball.
You don't have to force it, but it may be a good time to put Matthew Golden in a first-look role. He's shown he has the hands, he can generate yards after the catch, and he has speed. He can do much more than just catch the ball in the backfield or take a hand-off on a jet-sweep. It's time to get Matthew Golden more involved.
With Tucker Kraft off the field, the Packers lose a player who was just starting to be recognized as a star. In Matthew Golden, we might have one who's ready for his time to come as well.
Other Notables
Matthew Golden and Luke Musgrave are good candidates to pick up a big chunk of the slack, but you don't replace a player like Tucker Kraft that easily. One of the biggest scheme-wise disappointments of Kraft's absence is how the return of Christian Watson could've amplified his production even further and vice versa. With Watson taking safeties with him over the top, Kraft could've had an easy 1x1 underneath, and likewise if the safety played Kraft instead. You still have Watson over the top, so who gets the middle outside of Doubs with Musgrave or Golden?
Jayden Reed is apparently inching closer to his return. What closer, though, we don't really know. What we do know is he has been working out on the sideline during practice, so that's something. Reed remains on IR with a collarbone injury, but could return within the month. Despite it still being a few games out, Reed's presence as one of the Packers' top receivers would make a big difference for the offense, helping make up for the loss of Tucker Kraft.
Dontayvion Wicks has struggled to produce a bit this season. He's missed the last two games with a calf injury, but per Matt LaFleur, he could return to practice this week. Wicks has never exactly been a go-to receiver, but he has shown the capability to put up some big single-game numbers in the past. If Wicks can get back to form, he can help out the Packers' offense as well.
There will be no replacing Tucker Kraft in the Packers' offense. He brings a skillset that is not easily replicated. But the Packers are a talented bunch catching the football, and if utilized correctly, they can still be almost as effective in Kraft's absence.

Golden has just 23 catches for 262 yards (and no TDs) on the season.
He has 5 catches for 13 yards the last 2 weeks. That is not a misprint and it does not mean he has 5 catches and is AVERAGING 13 yards per reception. No, our first 1st round WR pick in forever who is supposed to be a speed merchant is literally averaging just over 2 yards per catch over the last 2 contests.
Richard Rodgers would be embarrassed by Golden's output.
Here is an idea, how about our 7th year "offensive guru" head coach gets his head out of his arse and stops calling so many plays designed to get Golden the ball near or even behind the line of scrimmage.

Golden is having a season similar to Randall Cobb's rookie year. That isn't a bad thing and you need to remember that most rookie WRs don't do much in the NFL their first year.

In 2011, GB had Jennings, Nelson, James Jones, and even old man Driver catching passes ahead of Cobb.
In 2025, we have Doubs who would be the #4 WR on the 2011 team, and Reed, Watson, and Wicks who have all missed many of the first 8 games.
We need production from Golden and we need it now.
And please stop with the tired Packer propaganda about rookie WRs “don’t do much” when that simply has not been true for a long time – see just a few examples below:
2024 Brian Thomas Jax (87 catches for 1,282 yards), Malik Nabers NY Giants (109/1,204), 2023 Puka Nacua Rams (105/1,486), 2022 Garrett Wilson Jets (83/1,103), 2021 Ja’Marr Chase Bengals (81/1,455), and 2020 Justin Jefferson Vikings (88/1,400).
Hell, 2nd round slot guy Ladd F’n McConkey put up (82/1,149) as a rookie last season.
The problem is not Matthew Golden it is his head coach.

What is worrying me is not Golden, but the lack of the slot role generally in game plans. After Reed was on fire early last season that usage is sporadic at best. Reed dropped off the map after that even when healthy and Golden’s use seems close to how LaFleur was using Reed later last year very ineffectually. We are back trying to use a small guy as a deep threat, nearly always on his own deep and not getting in motion in space and letting him burn.

Great a FEW WRs did very well as rookies. Now look at the plethora of other rookie WRs that didn't do much. Yes it is easier now for rookie WRs to come out and be good but that isn't guaranteed. Would it help if Golden had a more set role, yes. I think one problem is that Golden isn't a good blocker so having him on the field is, at least to LaFluer, telegraphing that it is going to be a passing play. At the same time most of the time that Heath is on the field is a running play so it goes both ways. IMO Watson and Golden should be the starting outside WRs and one of them goes into the slot in 3WR sets with Doubs on the outside. Now once Reed gets back then I would have Doubs being WR4 and Golden and Watson staying on the outside with Reed on the field.

So Golden is not a great blocker and Golden is not seeing the ball in the passing game despite WRs 2-4 all being injured and not playing ... GREAT, right?
Accept that rookie WRs, especially but not just 1st round picks, are routinely productive right away rather than pretending they are not and then we can ponder whether Golden's lack of production is due to (1) MLF not utilizing him correctly, (2) Love not looking at him enough, (3) him not being ready to produce or something else.

Perhaps if "shit for brains" LaFleur tells his 55 million dollar triple covered but throw anyway QB to throw the ball past the LOS to Golden he would have better receiving numbers. We all know that HGolden can catch the ball and we all know that he can fly. GIVE HIM THE FORWARD PASS!

If Golden is at the line of scrimmage, presumably that’s due to the route called by LaFleur. Love doesn’t tell him to squat on the line.

And yet, with the injury to Kraft, those 23 catches and 262 yards are second best on the team now. His 29 targets are a distant second now to Doubs.
All offseason, I beat the drum for WRs, and I was really happy when the Packers drafted him. And then all through training camp, he got glowing reports and was described as our "de facto" #1 WR. It hasn't quite worked out like that, but he's still our #2 WR....not Reed, or Watson, or Wicks.
I really thought we'd throw it downfield to him more. These WR screens and quick outs are good for flattening out the defense, but eventually you just have to throw it over their heads. The problem isn't that there are so many plays designed to get Golden the ball near the LOS, it's that there are so few plays designed to get him the ball downfield. He's only touching the ball 3 times a game.
Yeah, IMO, we need to use him downfield more. If you can bomb, you should bomb.

Seems like yet another year that people ultimately will say MLF's holding back on calls, close to his vest to surprise everybody come the playoffs, but I'm not buying it anymore. It's gone beyond being frustrated. I've never seen a team with so much potential and firepower not use it. it's either he can't completely get his hands around game management and timeout or the offense. Clearly he has shown at the worst times that he may not be able to handle both roles to the extent that they need to be.

I would say that LaFluer should also start getting the ball to Watson a lot more. He is still the most explosive WR on the team. Let him run some of the intermediate and short routes as well to let him get the ball in space. We have seen that he can take short crossing routes to the house.

Greg forgot about the backs. Quik play action to Jacobs, he chips someone, then sneaks through the line or to the flats, and BOOM, 15 yards. I wish I could take credit for that except that before we had some good TEs Aaron Jones did it quite successfully.

The main reason Golden isn't getting more targets, IMHO, is J Love has been locked in on Doubs especially and Kraft/Watson secondarily. The lack of time the O line is giving Love doesn't help, but he should be seeing Golden more.

Golden is dinged, too, by the way. He left Sunday's game with a shoulder. We'll see if he practices tomorrow, although the extra day for MNF helps in this regard.
Musgrave started out as the primary TE during his rookie season even though his blocking was much maligned...so the Packers must have had enough faith in it that they didn't feel like it was a detriment. With Kraft, the Packers played 2 TEs on about 1/4 to 1/3 of their snaps. That puts Fitz or Whyle on the field. Whyle is more of a Musgrave than a Kraft. Fitz is neither.
So what does Musgrave do? If Golden doesn't play, that frees up a bunch of snaps, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers try to plug Musgrave into Kraft's role and see how he holds up. It could be with a lesser blocker at TE and injuries at WR, the Packers might play even more 12 personnel.
"Jayden Reed is apparently inching closer to his return. "
If it was just a collarbone injury, Reed would likely have been maintaining his conditioning and been faster back to the field with a chance to make a difference. The Jones fracture surgery, though, would've taken him off his feet for awhile which means he'll be trying to get all that conditioning and explosiveness back. I don't expect to get much from him the rest of the way.

I like most of your takes here, Dobber, but don't think you can write off Reed yet. I believe he will show up late in the season.
From an article , "Per Silverstein, the target date for receiver Jayden Reed to return to the field is around Thanksgiving. At the moment, Reed’s foot injury has recovered fully, and the team is just waiting on his collarbone to be cleared."
I had heard he was running well on the side, so he should be getting a lot of his conditioning back.

"Whyle is more of a Musgrave than a Kraft."
No, he's actually more like Kraft...just a bit slower of foot running a 4.7 to Kraft's (and Musgrave's) 4.6.
Whyle was profiled as a very good blocker with very good receiving skills coming out of Cincinnati where he was an instrumental all around TE during Fickell's best season in 2022. Whyle was 2nd team all ACC in 2020 and 1st team all ACC in 2022 for the Bearcats. Bills drafted him in the 5th in 2023 (same class as Luke and Tuck).
He was an effective TE for the Bills last year where played all 17 games and made 28 receptions for 248 yards and one touchdown. It was a bit of a surprise the Bills cut him at final cut downs this year and Gutey snapped him up two days later.
I am intrigued by Whyle. He might quickly prove to be the #2 TE.

I saw a film breakdown where they pointed out Golden ran the wrong route at least three times against the Steelers. Until Reed is back they should just stick him in the slot and leave him there while he gets a handle on the X and Z positions. Simplify things for him and he might be able to make up for part of the YAC they lost with Kraft going down.

Golden struggles with contact near the line and with blocking at the moment. He needs to add strength as well as technique to play either the x or the Y in this offense. I think that will come, but, especially with Reed out (who actually has similar struggles) one would think he’d make his living across the middle and that would be LaFleur’s preoccupation. Seemingly not.

if MLF and Love can't figure out how to best diversify the offense then perhaps a new HC is needed...this good game bad game stuff has to end, its been a few years now and lets not lose all our games to the other NFC north teams this year....except for luck against the Bears they would have...playing at Lambeau is also a must win...over the last few years some of the worst games have come at home...

when MFL was hired it was for many, a real head scratcher...like "wtf?"...what a read with a little research was that he wasn't that well like by the Titan fans and were happy to see him go...this is from way back then...""Matt LaFleur was not a good offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, as the offense was statistically poor under his leadership, ranking 27th in scoring and 25th in total yards in 2018..the Titans did have injured
Player as does most NFL teams but many fans were critical of LaFleurs performance as OC.."" has he grown a bunch since then as an OC and HC?? Dunno...he also had King Henry himself and people thought he was not used properly...

Is it true that the Packers are FAVORED against the Eagles??? I remember GB’s last encounter with the Eagles - 🤮. I’m not seeing any major regression this season (except with the Packers).

Musgrave has things he can do and he can make plays, but his poor blocking skills will be felt. I agree what we need to see is Golden working the slot more now.
The Packers averaged 32.5 ppg for the 4 games before the Panthers game. Even against the Panthers, they moved the ball well, but just struggled in the red zone. Are the fans overstating the Packers' offensive woes? Is the issue that everyone had that game as a for sure W, so the loss sticks in the craw more? The Packers Oline has been spotty, this has resulted in the running game not being what was expected, and for Love to use a lot more quick throws. Yet they scored 32.5 ppg for 4 games, so production was good. Why does one game now mean the Packers are the worst offense in football? Or am I just spending too much time on the internet and have grown tired of the bipolar internet "fans"?

We will get to see whether it is more about "individual talent" vs opportunity with "the role". If Kraft had been on the bench at the beginning of the season, would Musgrave have posted similar numbers? We are about to see. I would expect a drop off (a nod to Kraft's talent) but still high level production (nod to the role/opportunity therein). I see no reason Musgrave won't deliver 85% of what Kraft produced. Kraft specialty was YAC....so that is what Musgrave won't quite deliver....so he'll just have to get the ball caught beyond the sticks...and be reliable "possession type receiver" rather than big threat receiver....unless he figures out how to stay on his feet after the catch.
