So Far, NFC North Rivals Haven't Gained Ground on Pack
One week into free agency Green Bay still has the best team.
By KenLass

Whew! The worst of it should be pretty much over. The first wave of NFL free agent signings has washed ashore. We all knew the Packers would have to sit it out. There is simply no money to compete for the top names. All we could do is wince and hold our breath and hope the other teams in the NFC North wouldn’t make enough significant moves to surpass Green Bay in talent.
The Vikings, Bears and Lions have been busy. But to the eye of this writer, the Packers remain the most talented team in the division. Let’s take a look at what’s transpired.
VIKINGS
Minnesota has had an interesting offseason. They have a fairly impressive portfolio of free agent signings. The Vikes picked up cornerback Patrick Peterson, defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, defensive end Stephen Weatherly and linebacker Nick Vigil. They lost tight end Kyle Rudolph, tackle Riley Reiff and safety Anthony Harris. They are desperately trying to rebuild on defense after last year’s youth movement didn’t work. Peterson has shown signs of slippage, else they never would have gotten him for $8 million on a one year deal. Weatherly is not an impact player. Minnesota will be stout on the D-line if they can field Tomlinson, Michael Pierce and Danielle Hunter, but there are reports that Hunter is unhappy with his deal and may request a trade. The offense thus far remains much the same, with explosive talent at the skill positions but many question marks along the O-line.
BEARS
The Bears added quarterback Andy Dalton and defensive back Desmond Trufant. They have lost quarterback Mitch Trubisky, cornerback Kyle Fuller and defensive back Buster Skrine. They franchised receiver Allen Robinson. Hard to see the Bears being better by these moves. Dalton for Trubisky is no better than an even trade-off. Ditto for Trufant-Fuller. There are reports that Akiem Hicks has been given permission to seek a trade. His loss would be critical to the defensive front.
LIONS
The Lions have the furthest to improve, so it’s not surprising they have been the busiest team in the division. They pulled the trigger on a complete rebuild by trading quarterback Matt Stafford to the Rams and getting LA signal caller Jared Goff in return. Among their free agent acquisitions are former Packers Jamaal Williams and Tim Boyle, receiver Tyrell Williams, tight end Josh Hill, receiver Breshad Perriman and trading for defensive lineman Michael Brockers. Besides Stafford, their losses include receiver Kenny Golladay, DB Trufant, offensive lineman Joe Dahl, defensive lineman Everson Griffen and tight end Jesse James. One would think the Lions can’t help but get better, but it all depends on the quarterback play. Regardless, this is a rebuild that will take a few more years.
So, as of now, let’s compare the Packers to their rivals in some key areas.
Quarterback:
Rodgers clearly the best. Cousins second. Dalton third. Goff last.
Running Back:
Dalvin Cook first, Aaron Jones a close second. Deandre Swift third. AJ Dillon fourth. David Montgomery fifth.
Receiver:
1. Davante Adams 2. Allen Robinson 3. Justin Jefferson 4. Adam Thielen
Offensive Line:
1. Packers (with David Bakhtiari) 2. Lions 3. Bears 4. Vikings
Defensive Line:
1. Vikings (Hunter, Pierce, Tomlinson) 2. Lions (Flowers, Brockers, Okwara) 3. Bears (Hicks, Goldman, Edwards) 4. Packers (Clark, Lowry, Keke)
Linebackers:
1. Bears (Mack, Smith, Trevathan) 2. Packers (Z. Smith, P. Smith, Gary) 3.Vikings (Kendricks, Barr, Dye) 4. Lions (Collins, Tavai, Reeves-Maybin)
Corners & Safeties:
1. Packers (Alexander, Amos, Savage) 2. Bears (Trufant, Johnson, Jackson) 3. Vikings (Peterson, Dantzler, Smith) 4. Lions (Okuda, Walker, Moore)
The Packers finished best in the division in total defense in 2020 and nothing has happened thus far in free agency to significantly change that. The Vikings have bolstered their D-line and secondary and may move ahead of the Bears, but the Packers have the overall best talent led by All Pro caliber players Kenny Clark, Za’darius Smith and Jaire Alexander, and a rising star in Rashan Gary. I’m not saying the Green Bay defense is great, but they are the best in the North.
There’s a lot of offseason yet to play out. Things could certainly change. There are low tier free agents still out there. Who knows? Maybe even the Packers will sign one! And then, of course, there is the draft.
But after the first blush of free agency, the Packers still have the best quarterback, the best receiver, a Pro Bowl running back, the best offensive line, the best cornerback and the best pair of safeties. I like their chances.

Hopefully the Packers goal isn't to be just a tick better than mediocre. That's how teams end up being good enough to make the playoffs but never good enough to make it to a SB.

We should all strive to post better than mediocre comments on this site.

Thanks Ken!
Tough to project! Injuries, depth, veterans losing a step, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year player development. The remaining FA, the draft, etc!
I think the one thing that is safe to say is LeFleur will continue to improve and evolve as a head coach. Also continuity heading into the 3rd season with his offense it has to account for something. This has to be worth something in the over all evaluation.

Great point Knock! The Packers got outcoached in the last two NFCCG's. With MLF's maturity as a coach and new defensive and special teams coordinators, maybe the Packer coaching staff gets better. And maybe that is the necessary element to push the Packers over the top.

LaFleur has to get better at in game adjustments and calling under adverse conditions. Barry must be a lot better than Pettine tactically. These have been significant factors in our last two season ending performances.
One hopes, but ultimately I think it will determine his and the team’s ability to make the Super Bowl as much as roster management at this point.

Given how good MLF is at game planning, his inability to make in-game adjustments is baffling and that has to change for the Packers to win big games. I think it is a low bar for Barry to be better tactically than Pettine. Some of Pettine's player usage as well as play calls were just odd for a guy with his experience. Even though the Barry hire did not blow me away, I expect improvement on that side of the ball.
I wouldn't under rate improvement in special teams either. The Packers have been 13-3 for two years running with arguably the worst special teams in the league save Crosby. If they can just get to average that would be a significant field position assist to the other two parts of the team.

So is winning the North the only goal?

The article was about the moves made so far in the NFC North with players additions and subtractions of our rivals. He did not say the goal was to win the North, and was showing which teams have improved. You only post negative comments.

Don't waste time trying to explain it to him. In his mind, he is the only one in here who wants to win the Super Bowl. The rest of us are just satisfied to make the playoffs. He'll keep posting it ad nauseum, trust me.

It starts with winning the division. Always.

Bears won the Division in 2010, the last Packer SB year. Need to be healthy and make the playoffs.

You could keep going with coaches and whatnot too.
HC -
1. Lafleur
2. Zimmer
3. Nagy
4. *Campbell (only at 4 because he is a 1st year HC. He could easily be better then Nagy and Zimmer).
This is a year to year league. Whoever finishes at the bottom one year could finish 1st the next. But that typically applies to teams with average QB's. When you have a great QB, that rule doesn't usually apply.
When you start looking at specifics as in coaching, play calling, players, its really hard to see where any of the other 3 teams can catch up to GB, as they stand. Obviously injuries and whatnot play a major factor. But when you factor in the players and schemes. GB has the best offense by far. The defense has more then enough players to at the very least finish middle of the pack.
Chicago looks like its taking a step back. Lions maybe taking a step forward but we really have no clue with a new HC, new QB, basically new everything. They could be taking a step back as well. Vikings will be the stiffest competition this year.

Russell Wilson would have really changed the dynamic of the division. The Red Ryder BB Gun, not so much.

I agree with the rankings here. The only exception for me is AJ Dillon. I haven't seen enough of Dillon to even him include him on the list at this point. Hopefully by the end of 2021 he will have had enough carries so we accurately assess how good of an RB he actually is.
21 carries against the Titans plus some spot duty during the rest of the season doesn't provide an adequate sampling size.
We need to see him in action against the Vikes and Bears defenses plus a few other solid non-divisional opponent defenses.
Having said that I can't wait to see him running behind a healthy Deguara. Should be some bone crushing blocks and collisions when they are on the field together. Thanks, Since '61

I regret three possible moves that we could have made and have the same Cap as now, but they weren't made:
1 - if Gute had drafted a WR instead of Love, this season we could have had a WR2 starter and we didn't have to re-sign AJ
2 - we could have tried to trade Preston with Gilmoure
3 - instead of re-signing AJ we could have invested the same money in MLB or help Clark (time to go to Lowry).
With these 3 moves the big needs would have been covered with the same money spent up to now ..... the rest we could have done with the draft.
As I have said several times the problem is the choices !!!!
The important thing is to have a roster without holes, then if the players you choose are good but do not perform (or get injured like 49 ers) it is a problem that you can hardly attribute to your GM.
I repeat same money spent, but really complete team on both sides of the pitch

MN: Lost its 2nd round pick and got back a 3rd for Ngakoue.
LBs: Um, no ILBs listed? Barnes is going to start and play every snap if he truly is replacing Kirksey. So Smith/Barnes/Smith or Smith/Barnes/Gary sounds more real to me. Might still be the best in the North, but it is a closer call and subject to extrapolation.

Minnesota always wins the offseason. They are October champions.
I have a question:
Objectively, we had the best total defense in the division.
Subjectively, we have the worst defensive line.
So, is the defensive line not that important, or is your subjective evaluation incorrect? Or both?
