Romeo Doubs's Development Into a Top Perimeter Receiver
Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs has emerged as one of the top receiving threats in the NFL this season when lined up wide.

Entering the 2024 season as the talk of the league, most of the Green Bay Packers wide receiver unit got off to slower-than-expected starts. Third-year receiver Romeo Doubs, in particular, has also faced separate hurdles that have slowed his output.
Even so, Doubs' contributions to the offense have been more impactful and efficient when Jordan Love or Malik Willis look his way this season.
With only garnering 20 targets through four games and no touchdowns to his credit, Doubs hit a bump in the road after missing team practice leading up to a week five match with the Los Angeles Rams, resulting in a one-game suspension. However, what seemed like a potential crossroads in his relationship with the Packers instead resulted in Doubs returning to the team, being embraced by the locker room, and instantly shining again.
There's no question Doubs looked improved as last season progressed, especially in regards to his route running and securing contested catches, so it's understandable to have expected him to reap an immediate bump in production in the early goings of this season.
But while the stat sheet is still not packed with gaudy numbers, Doubs has been a menacing task for defensive backs, especially when he lines up wide as a perimeter receiver.
According to PFF, Doubs has lined up wide on 194 pass-play snaps this year, the 14th most in football.
Working as a perimeter receiver, Doubs' 71.4% contested catch rate is the second-highest of receivers with at least 150 snaps lined up wide, and he's racked up the third most contested catches (10) in the NFL. Doubs has also produced the 10th highest catch rate over expected in the NFL (8.9%).

With the regular season roughly halfway wrapped up, the Packers have leaned into Doubs' improved ability to make tough catches down the field. Having only two drops on the season and being the most reliable Packer on contested catch throws, Doubs is separating himself among Packers' pass catchers in the dependability department.
Doubs owns a team-leading 14 contested targets and has yielded a 94.4 quarterback rating when targeted, which is second on the team to only Jayden Reed, whose average depth of target (aDoT) is half of Doubs' 13.5 aDoT.
After scoring his first two touchdowns of the season in week six against the Arizona Cardinals, Doubs hasn't tallied any more trips to the end zone but has increased his target share, leading the team with 20 targets since week six. He's also currently posting career highs in yards per catch (14.8), receiving success rate (62.5%), and yards per target (9.6).
With Willis stepping in a few games for an injured Love, Doubs' production has been hindered by fewer targets with an adjusted game plan. Even so, there's no questioning that Doubs' reliability has vastly improved. His connection with Love has been money for the Packers, and very few receivers have had more success lining up primarily as boundary receivers this season.

Great article. Doubs-Love connection is real.

Doubs is the best route runner we have by some way. He is not a giant or a burner, but he is willing to do a lot of the grunt work as well as being a technician, not afraid of contact and very good at tracking the ball.

he's willing to go over the middle, and fortunately Love/Willis haven't gotten him killed yet.

I actually think Wicks to be a tad bit better with his routs than Doubs. However, it's close and Doubs clearly has the better hands.

Wicks is extremely agile with great cuts, but I wouldn’t have described his route running as consistently perfected. His clear standout ability is to get open and create space. Thats is somewhat different.

He's just not explosive enough for me.
Extreme Caution still fits.

Going into this season, Doubs was somewhat overlooked by fans due to his lack of eye-popping athletic traits compared to the other top four WRs on the team. He is our most technically sound WR though, and I think you have identified his calling card, which is his ability to make contested catches. He is also a whiz at sideline catches, like that one against the Jaguars on Sunday.
It's misleading to characterize his problem earlier this season as "missing team practice." He didn't just miss team practice, he skipped it, and he did it twice, but oh well, he and the rest of the team appear to have moved on, and let's hope nothing like that happens again.

He wasn’t overlooked by Packers fans who were paying attention. He’s got the best hands on the team, he’s tough as nails, makes crazy catches look easy and blocks! And he’s done it since he’s been here.

I picked Doubs to have a breakout season for several reasons. His steady increase in performance during his first two seasons. His playoff run was outstanding. His connection with Love on and off the field was evident. His ability to track and own footballs in the air. His intelligence and focus is improving his craft. Humble and hardworking
So I was so taken aback when he left the team. Seemed so out of character. I don't know why except he took his punishment and returned to the team acknowledging he made a mistake with his actions.
I think he's back. Seems like a really good guy. His team seems to think so too.

It is a good thing that the other thing from earlier this season has been put nicely in the rear view mirror. Both sides seem to have come through it okay.
Doubs is intense. It is apparent from what you see in his application of skills on the field, his fight, and his sure-handedness. It is also apparent from what you see of him in the periphery. He's not a rah rah cheerleader type personality and that's apparent. You see the shots on the sideline and he just appears to have a look about him that is beyond just being focused. Just, intense.

Where is watson? How is he always covered like a blanket. Thought he had burner speed but I havent seen him use it.

"Where is Watson?" All over the field, typically selflessly blocking (he's the best WR blocker by far) for his teammates or being used as a double/triple covered decoy for his teammates. I'd love to see him get more throws his way (MLF has said he needs to feed Watson more because he deserves it) and I believe he will.

Not sure I agree with the headline. Doubs still struggles against man coverage, ranking 107th this year with a 17.5% win rate. Also, having a lot of contested catches isn't a good thing, having a lot of separation is though.

That stat is problematic for Doubs because he’s used to do so many other things than be a target. Unlike a classic big name WR, he’s often just occupying a defender to open space elsewhere or to block. Yet he consistently makes clutch catches and contributes yards. I wish we could get him back to his earlier red zone effectiveness, but there again, he consistently draws attention because of that, which should open space for others.
I suppose it depends on how you view value. To me, Doubs is a consistent reliable starter. I don’t see him being Jefferson but I’m happy he is out there and I very much value that role on any team.
