Paris Johnson Jr. NFL Draft Prospect Profile and Scouting Report
Ohio State Offensive Tackle Paris Johnson Jr. Scouting Report for the 2023 NFL Draft
By markoldacres
Name: Paris Johnson Jr.
School: Ohio State
Year: Jr
Position: Offensive Tackle
Measurables: 6’6”, 313 lbs.
Combine: Bench- 29 reps, Broad- 9’2”, expected to complete other drills at pro day
General Info:
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Johnson was a consensus five-star recruit coming out of Princeton High School. He committed to Ohio State and played in five games as a freshman in 2020.
Johnson started every game for the Buckeyes at right guard in 2021, before transitioning to left tackle in 2022. He was named a consensus All-American at the end of his junior year.
Off the field, Johnson established a charitable foundation back in high school which has raised money for groups such as veterans and the homeless.
Positional Skills:
Strengths
Johnson possesses excellent size for the offensive tackle position, standing at an even 6’6” and weighing 313lbs. His arms measured in at more than 36” at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Along with his physical stature, Johnson shows ideal athleticism on tape. He is comfortable on the move and can stay latched onto defenders when moving laterally.
In pass protection, Johnson’s smooth feet allow him to mirror rushers and quickly redirect to pick up a new assignment. He has the strength to dig his heels in versus power rushers as well.
Johnson displays powerful hands and is capable of stunning defenders with his initial strike. He can recover from a poor start by steering rushers away from his quarterback.
In the run game, Johnson showed the ability to open holes both on his own and in combination blocks. He has an ideal temperament for run blocking, playing with a ‘finisher’ mentality, and garnering his fair share of pancake blocks without being over-aggressive.
His experience at guard provides versatility to the team drafting him, and Johnson’s strong academic performance indicates he will have no problem making the mental leap to the NFL level.
Weaknesses
While Johnson displays all the tools to be a long-term successful NFL left tackle, there are inconsistencies to his game, which should not be surprising given he has only started for one season.
He can be found guilty of under-setting in pass protection and allowing rushers to beat him to the edge. So far, Johnson has been able to rescue these situations with his athleticism and long arms, but NFL edge rushers will not be so forgiving.
Although generally he showed a strong anchor, there are instances where Johnson can be put on his heels by the bull rush and give up too much ground. At times he will fail to shoot his hands early or effectively enough and can be beaten quickly as a result.
In run blocking, Johnson will struggle to remain balanced at times and this results in him failing to stay engaged with a defender.
Fit with the Packers:
The Packers do not have an immediate need at offensive tackle, with David Bakhtiari, Yosh Nijman and Zach Tom all strong options on the current roster, but Bakhtiari is no sure bet to stay in Green Bay long-term and Johnson could still compete to start on the right side in 2023.
Interestingly, Johnson does not align with the physical profile of the offensive linemen drafted by Brian Gutekunst… he’s too tall. Every offensive lineman drafted by Gutekunst has been between at least 6’4” and smaller than 6’6”.
While this may not be a threshold that would realistically prevent the Packers from drafting Johnson, it is intriguing, especially when you consider David Bakhtiari is also a “shorter” tackle.
Overall, Johnson is a natural pass protector who possesses all the tools evaluators look for and still has room to grow. He turns 22 in July.
He has a strong argument for being the best offensive tackle in this class and should be a viable option for the Packers in the 1st round, if he is still available when they pick.

he'd look great in Green and Gold but only viable IMO if we come up with another 1st round pick somewhere.

I like Broderick Jones better. If Bakh is gone as part of the trade, I'd take him with the #13 from the Jets (Rodgers trade). Heck, I'd probably even take him if he wasn't part of the trade. He's BPA either way to me, although he has a good chance of not being there at that point. Oline is just fine is what I've heard from some. I'm not good with fine. Not good with serviceable. Neither should the Packers be. Why would we want an average line at some key positions that may be able to pass protect better than other teams, but has not been able to help punch through on goal to go and short yardage runs? I'm at a loss for those that think this line is physical enough to get that done. Pass protection comes first, but that doesn't mean the Packers should diminish the run blocking to the point that teams don't fear those short yardage situations. Broderick Jones, imo, would give the line that physicality and attitude. I think he would be plug and play at RT to start.
Also, I know this is not a strong OL class, but that is depth of draft, . Not necessarily the top linemen like OT Jones, OT Paris, and Guard Skoronski. They will be 1st rounders. Maybe even Anton Harrison. After that, the talent falls off.

I know guys will get tired of hearing me say it, but I too would love to draft Broderick Jones at LT, even if Bakh is still on the roster... Let Bakh play until the trade deadline and then get a '24 first round pick for him and Broderick can take over at LT.
If we end up with another second round pick as well, I hope we grab Dawand Jones to anchor the RT position for a decade...
With those two on the roster and holding down LT and RT our OL could be great.
BJ - EJ - Myers or Tom - Runyan - DJ
With Rasheed Walker, Caleb Jones, Sean Rhyan, maybe Nijman waiting in the wings...
I think the smartest thing Gutey can do this draft is to solidify the OL and secure enough weapons for Love that we won't have to worry about weapons for at least 3 or 4 years...
13 Overall - Broderick Jones LT
15 Overall - Quentin Johnston or Bijan Robinson (Whoever is available and Gutey has ranked higher....)
43 Overall - Dawand Jones RT
45 Overall - Darnell Washington TE (He prides himself on being the 6th OL)
With Broderick Jones, Dawand Jones, and Darnell Washington, our OL and starting TE would be unreal IMO.
Add in Johnston or Bijan and our offense could be very special.

Well, perhaps Gute should trade Nijman for the 2nd needed to select Dawand Jones. Getting a rookie on a cheap deal makes a lot of sense when compared to a $4.3M to $5M RT who likely gets more expensive in 2024.
All you have to be, BDU, to make this great scenario work, is be right about Dawand Jones (and find him available when GB is on the board). 🤣

No kidding. DJ's one of my admitted draft crushes.
If we get NYJ's 13, I'd trade that down along with the 15 to snap up some real treasures end R1-early R2.... Personally, I'm not seeing the need to draft at either of those positions. Talent rich at OT, TE, EDGE. Packers may want to use one of those on Branch if he slaughters his Pro Day.
There looks to be a good apple at our need positions. Might as well get as many bites as we can.
I really like your idea with Yosh, TGR.. I am all good with starting over with a couple of very solid, affordable bookends at LT and RT this season from the top of this draft class. And, I'm a huge Yosh fan, myself. Felt end of season we could draft his replacement.

I like it BDU. I think this is an Offense draft. Get those two OL on the edges, with two TE set of Washington early and Zack Kuntz later, and a three headed RB monster of AJ, AJD, and Bijan. Pound the ball left and right all game long with some crossing routes and some deep shots when the D starts creeping up. Very special indeed.

My guess is Johnson will be gone by pick #11 (Titans' pick). I could only see us going OT in round one if Bakhtiari is traded.

Many think Titans go OT...
Many also have Broderick Jones going to the Jets at 13, but since we'll have that pick, I could see it still happening.

A very high character guy and academic achiever.... a winner. Everyone loves his athleticism. Only one year experience at tackle, and will need a little time to develop at this position at the NFL level; it's been said that he'll need to work on his hand placement to avoid holding calls. But he's a good run blocker and finisher (exactly what we could use), so starting him out at guard and transitioning him to tackle might make sense.

Not counting on the Jets pick at 13, but the Packer's pick at 15 will probably see one player dropping into the Packer's lap. Too many QBs will be selected as well as some of the Edge guys. My guess is Gonzales the CB from OR., Quintin Johnston WR from TCU, or Johnson mentioned here. If the QBs don't fall early, then Green Bay may chose to trade down to the early 20s.

If Bakhtiari is traded, Paris is a great first pick; if DB is NOT traded, I wouldn't pick Paris unless he dropped to the second round (not going to happen...).
