Pakckers Practice Roundup, Preseason Vs. Cleveland

Everyone on the roster played, and almost everyone played at least reasonably well.

NOT PLAYING:

WR Dimitri Stanley, TEs Tyler Davis and Tucker Kraft, OL Jordan Morgan, Zach Tom,  and Donovan Jennings, CBs Jaire Alexander(personal matter) and Carrington Vallentine, DL Deslin Alexandre, LBs Edgerrin Cooper and TyRon Hopper, and DE Keshawn Banks.  Schneidman

INJURIES:

Marshawn Lloyd (hamstring) per Schneidman.  Jonathan Ford walks off holding his wrist.  Hodkiewicz

PERSONNEL:

Packers open with this O-line: Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Rhyan, Dillard. Demovsky

Offensive starters played one series. It’s Sean Clifford time. No. 2 OL, from left to right, is Dillard, Newman, Rhyan, Monk and Telfort.  Schneidman

OL to start the third quarter: Jones, Smith, Monk, Newman, Telfort.  Bretl

Caleb Jones is in at right tackle.  Hodkiewicz  [It was fun watching Jones run block.  #53 on Cleveland (Jowon Briggs, 313 pound DT) won’t forget Jones after Jones moved him out of the hole and several yards downfield at least twice.  To be fair, Briggs was a 7th round pick in the 2024 draft and is listed as fourth string on the Browns depth chart.  TGR]

Starters on Defense per Demovsky:  Clark, Slaton, Gary, Smith, Quay Walker, McDuffie,  McKinney, Bullard (deep), Stokes and Ballentine outside, Nixon.

Ballentine & Rochell are gunners on punt. Zayne Anderson is the personal protector.  Hodkiewicz

The nickel on the last play featured three safeties: Bullard (in the slot IIRC - TGR], Williams and Anthony Johnson plus two corners.  Demovsky

OFFENSE:

Sean Rhyan leading the way for Wilson. Run blocking has been where’s been at his best. Pass pro is where LaFleur and Steno have wanted to see more consistency.  Bretl

Sean Rhyan's night is done. To my eye, the former third-round pick had a nice afternoon at center.  Hodkiewicz

Dillard had some struggles, including being charged with a false start.  Westondorf

Good work by Emanuel Wilson and his blockers on that drive. Telfort, DuBose, Melton, Joel Wilson and Rhyan getting down and dirty out front. Wilson punches it in from 5 yards out and the Packers lead, 14-3.  Schneidman

TE Joel Wilson is having a really nice debut. Nice block there on the Wilson run. 3 catches for 30 yards. He’d been fun in camp but drops have plagued him a bit. So far so good in preseason.  Herman

Jordan Love hits Dontayvion Wicks for a 65-yard TD on the third play of the game.  Schneidman

Nice drive by Sean Clifford and the 2s.  Clifford hits Heath for 14, Dubose twice for 13 and 14, while Wilson runs 7 times for 36 yards and a TD. The line was Dillard, Newman, Rhyan, Monk and Telfort.  Demovsky

Take 3 incompletions off of Clifford’s realistic stat line. One spike and two wasted time throws. He’s 9/17 in the box score but really 9/14.  Herman  [IIRC, Melton dropped two of Clifford’s passes as well.  Clifford finished 10/19 for 111 yards, 5.8 yards per attempt, no TDs or INTs, for a n70.3 passer rating.  Pratt was 5/7 for 46 yards, 6.6 yards/attempt, no TDs or INTs, 89 passer rating.  TGR]

A sneaky move by RB Emanuel Wilson for the first down and then some.  NFL [It was a nice cut by Wilson to break some ankles.  Pratt gets downfield to throw a block for Wilson. TGR]

Grant DuBose has been targeted six times already and has five catches for 66 yards. He's making up for lost time from last summer. A year ago, he was dealing with a back injury in his rookie preseason.  Demovsky  [Melton, Heath and Dubose all did some dirty work out there.  But Melton dropped two catchable passes and outright dropped a third pass.  I like Melton’s big play ability and his recent use on special teams, but I think Dubose is the #5 WR.  TGR]

Packers WR Grant DuBose in this first half:

3 catches

31 yards

[Finished 5 recs, 6 targets, 13.2 ave., 1 TD TGR]

2 first downs (one on fourth down)

Drew DPI on likely TD

Two nice blocks on the perimeter.

Add a nice toe drag in there.

Kruse

Tough game for Bo Melton. One of the few players having a bad outing.  Herman

Pratt praised Julian Hicks at his locker on Thursday. The undrafted rookie just made a nice adjustment to catch the 23-yard pass.  2) DuBose is catching EVERYTHING.  Hodkiewicz

DEFENSE:

Devonte Wyatt with two pressures on the opening defensive drive.  2)    Schneidman

Van Ness gets the sack of Winston but Wyatt helped drive the QB to LVN for the 7-yard loss.  Hodkiewicz

Lukas Van Ness makes at least a play most days in camp. He already has a sack and two run stops today.  Schneidman

Cox has been close a few times to a sack.  Bretl  [Cox also lost contain in his zeal.  Arron Mosby stayed home to force runs inside for short gains.  Nice game from Mosby.  TGR]

And the defense gets another stop - Mosby deflects pass at the line of scrimmage.  Hodkiewicz

It was Andy Herman who recently said Mosby has been having a nice camp. And he's been in on a bunch of plays so far today.  Kruse

Nice job by Rochell to get off the block and make the tackle.  Bretl [Rochell was very active with several positive plays.  Rochell had a nice game and has been having a nice camp.  TGR]

Kalen King drops Kelly for a 1-yard loss on third-and-2.  2)  Really good snaps by Stokes, who held edge on the third-and-2 stop and now combined with Van Ness on TFL.  Hodkiewicz

Matt LaFleur told Ashley Washburn at half that he wanted the defense to create a takeaway.  On the first play of the second half, a takeaway.  Rookie safety Evan Williams, who’s been having a solid camp, forces it. Kristian Welch recovers.  Schneidman

Forced fumble by Evan Williams. He just keeps making impact plays. He has 4 INTs in training camp.  2)  In practice we’ve seen the Packers safeties swarming to the ball regularly but the true physicality of the position group showed up with live tackling.  3)  Anthony Johnson taking on the OL, stopping RB from getting outside.  Bretl

Packers rookie safety Evan Williams already has 5 solo tackles.  Kruse [Williams finished with 6 solo tackles to lead the team.  TGR]

What a collision by safety Anthony Johnson to take out rookie guard Javion Cohen on that run before the 2-minute warning.  Hub

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Joseph went 2/2 on kicks today.  Carlson went 3/3.  [Hale did not play.  Carlson made a 46-yard field goal and Joseph hit a 35-yard field goal.  TGR]  Totals for camp/preseason:  Greg Joseph: 49/56 - 87.5%.  Alex Hale:  5/6 - 83.3%. Anders Carlson: 47/57 - 82.5%.  Herman

That was another high snap from Orzech, too.  Kruse  [Bowden snapped at least once for Whelan’s second punt. TGR]

MISCELLANEOUS:

Lukas Van Ness, Devonte Wyatt, Evan Williams, Grant DuBose among the standouts.  2)  LaFleur says he doesn’t anticipate starters playing vs. Broncos next Sunday.  Maybe a select few. Will use joint practice Friday to get them those reps.  Schneidman

Hafley’s defense had some beautiful stunt packages at Boston College.  First one as Green Bay DC results in a sack. He’s not going to show his full hand in preseason but that’s a nice start.  Daire Garracher

I like Emanuel Wilson a lot. He can play.  Kruse

The biggest thing of note when it comes to the offensive skill players is that Donatyvion Wicks once again appears to be the fourth receiver in the four-receiver rotation. While Romeo Doubs never left the field, Wicks’ only play with quarterback Jordan Love was his 65-yard touchdown.  Mosqueda  [There were only 3 snaps for the first-team offense and 8 for the defense.  TGR]

The snap counts were not available as of 12:30 a.m. I will try to get those published as soon as possible.

Every player who was cleared to play got some snaps except the new kicker, Hale. Very few players had a bad game, as far as I saw. Dillon got 4 rushing attempts and gained just 2 yards. I place the blame for that on the first string offensive line, which admittedly was down Zach Tom and Jordan Morgan. Indeed, I thought Dillon looked quicker when he tried to go east and west because there were no holes. I don't hold that against Dillon.

Emanuel Wilson looked good, showing a burst on one run, and a nice juke to break some ankles. Click on the link below for that video. The other RBs (Howard and Merriweather). I don't think the battle for the final RB roster spot got decided Saturday, but Wilson helped himself a bit.

TE Joel Wilson might be making a bid for the final TE roster spot (Musgrave, Kraft and Tyler Davis are locks, I think). He caught 3 of 3 for 30 yards and has had a nice camp so far. Ben Sims had been the favorite and probably still is, but he had a rough Family Night and was not targeted tonight despite the absence of Davis and Kraft.

Rhyan had a pretty nice night, especially when Cleveland started subbing. We shall see but I think Rhyan played a ton of snaps. The whole number 2 offensive line looked quite respectable. The line allowed just 4 QB hits and one sack. It was interesting seeing Monk at RG. Dillard and Caleb Jones played both RT and LT. Newman was out there.

Brooks and Preston Smith had no stats. I not sure how many snaps each got. Smith has had a quiet camp. LVN continued to terrorize the offense, though this time some of it was against the number ones on Cleveland. It remains to be seen if LVN will get more reps/snaps against the first string as things go forward.

Evan Williams had another good game. He led the Packers with 6 solo tackles, many early, and a forced fumble. Bullard looked fine at safety and played both deep and in the slot. AJJ made some plays. Christian Welch played quite a bit of mike linebacker after Quay sat down for the night. He didn't embarrass himself and he is good on STs. Wyatt can pass rush.

I thought Arron Mosby had a nice game. Brenton Cox came close but no cigar a couple of times. I thought Cox was pressing to make something happen. I don't know whether Cox has more talent than Mosby, but I thought Cox lost contain a couple of times while Mosby played disciplined football.

Forgot about Orzech. Thought he had one snap that wasn't so hot and Kruse thought two snaps.

They should just shut down Jacobs for a couple of weeks. Otherwise, they might end up having traded one hamstring for another hamstring while paying double.

Did not play for Cleveland:

CB 0 G.Newsome, S 1 J.Thornhill, WR 2 A.Cooper, WR 3 J.Jeudy, QB 4
D.Watson, LB 6 J.Owusu-Koramoah, K 7 D.Hopkins, CB 21 D.Ward, RB 22
N.Hines, RB 24 N.Chubb, RB 27 D.Foreman, CB 29 C.Mitchell, S 37 Da.Bell, LB
42 T.Fields, LS 47 C.Hughlett, LB 58 J.Hicks, G 68 M.Dunn, T 71 J.Wills, G 75
J.Bitonio, T 78 J.Conklin, TE 85 Njoku, DT 93 S.Harris, DT 94 D.Tomlinson,
DE 95 M.Garrett, DE 99 Z.Smith

That's a ton of starters. No Myles Garrett, No Zadarius Smith, no starting CB, safety, ILB, a couple of starting offensive linemen, amari cooper, jerry jeudy, QB (due to injury). Of course, GB withheld some starters and only gave a slew of starters a handful of snaps.

I thought Cox had a better showing than you did. I don’t debate the lost contain at least once. I thought Caleb Jones had a good night, bar one play. Hicks and Howard look like we should want them on our PS and to have upside. Dubose looked good, but I still can’t see him displacing a healthy starter. Dillon looked like the Dillon of old. It’s time to move on, but we shouldn’t overlook the fact that so did the O Line blocking for him. Dillard might be a weak link out of injury necessity, but Rhyan is helpful versus the run. Yet again. The problems were starting at C when Dillon was in.

Wilson runs hard, but the difference with him is that if he does find a crease he’s going to get more yards. Thats the key for RBs, hard yards like the TD and being able to grab chunks when an opportunity presents.
Dillard and Newman held up against vanilla, but teams know that as soon as the season starts they just need to start stinting and other moves. I hope we are smart enough to remember that. I’m not sure if Rhyan has the same weakness, perhaps to a certain extent, but he certainly adds to the run game, even at C.

Robert Rochell and Kalen King had good nights among the bubble types on D. Rochell had a big role on STs too. Orzech continues to be far more erratic than any vet long snapper should be. Overall, I came away thinking our young depth is stronger, so quite improved.

I do want to see Pratt given a chance with the 2nds as he showed some interesting things. However, Clifford was efficient and reasonably effective, if unspectacular, despite the online hate from some. He managed the clock adroitly at the end of the half. Looks like a game manager, which surely was the hope of the team when he was picked?
