Packers vs Lions: Gameday Preview - 2025 Week 1

Aiming to kick off the season with a statement

It's the moment we've all been waiting for, Packers fans. We made it. Today, your Green Bay Packers will kick off the 2025 NFL regular season against the Detroit Lions at 3:25 CST from Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Not only is it the first game of the season, but it's also the first divisional matchup of the 2025 campaign. Expectations are high for both teams this season, with the Lions looking to rebound from their disappointing divisional playoff defeat at the hands of the Washington Commanders. The Packers are hoping to make their case as one of the top teams in the NFC after falling to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round of the 2024 season.

The last time these two teams met was a 34-31 nail-biter in Detroit, where the Lions emerged victorious off a Jake Bates 35-yard field goal in week 14 of last season. Jordan Love finished 12/20 for 206 yards and one touchdown, with 114 of those yards going to Christian Watson, who had a big game with four receptions, his longest being 59 yards. Josh Jacobs finished with 66 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, and on defense, Rashan Gary walked away with the lone sack of the game on Jared Goff, with Keisean Nixon picking up an interception as well. Outside of that interception, though, Lions quarterback Jared Goff walked away with a big game, going 32/41 for 283 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball around with six receivers grabbing at least five catches for 30 yards or more.

In the final preseason game of the season, the Packers rested most of their starters for the majority of the game; however, Josh Jacobs did grab one carry for five yards in his tiny preseason warm-up, and Romeo Doubs hit pay dirt for a 1-yard touchdown on his only catch of the game. But perhaps the biggest highlights of the game, as far as starting players go, go to Matthew Golden, who snatched an impressive catch for 39 yards, and Quay Walker, who got a sack on Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe after an impressive stunt move with Edgerrin Cooper driving Milroe out of the pocket.

Of course, the biggest news heading into week 1 was the Packers trading two first-round picks and DT Kenny Clark for premier pass rusher Micah Parsons and signing Parsons to a contract extension. It's still unknown how much Parsons will play today, but when he takes the field, there is no doubt all eyes will be on him to see what kind of impact he might bring to the Packers' defense.

What to see on Offense

We saw plenty of drama after week 1 of the preseason when Jordan Love had a minor surgery to repair a ligament in his left thumb. The surgery was to get him as healthy as possible for week 1 of the regular season, and it looks like Love is good to go. It is worth noting that he hasn't been handing the ball off with his left hand in practice, however, so we'll have to see if that continues today and has any impact. Last year, Love was hampered by leg and groin injuries, which definitely impacted his mobility. It will be good to see QB1 mobile again, as that should help the effectiveness of the offense in 2025.

A mobile Jordan Love will be needed, as pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson is back on the field for the Lions defense. Hutchinson is an absolute game-wrecker. For anyone who is unfamiliar, everything you've heard about Micah Parsons being a beast at rushing the quarterback in the last week, that's Aidan Hutchinson as well. The Lions' top player is returning from an injury-derailed 2024 season in which he looked like he was primed for a bid at Defensive Player of the Year, and you'd better believe he wants to come back with a bang. The Packers' starting tackles for today look to be Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom; whether or not Jordan Morgan may alternate in, we will have to see, but Hutchinson will be testing both sides all day long to see who he can get the best of. After Hutchinson, though, the Lions aren't quite as effective in rushing the passer, so containing him will be key to keeping Jordan Love comfortable in the pocket.

If Love has the time he needs to find his receivers and move around the pocket, he has weapons to choose from. First-round pick, WR Matthew Golden, impressed throughout camp, and nothing would be better than to have Golden dazzle the home crowd in his NFL debut. The Lions have some new pieces in their secondary with DJ Reed joining Terrion Arnold as the boundary CBs and former Eagle Avonte Maddox possibly manning the nickel. The Lions do boast a good secondary with safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph at the safety positions, but the Packers have plenty of options with Wicks, Doubs, and hopefully Jayden Reed alongside Golden. Let's not forget the tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave. Kraft could be looking for a breakout season in 2025 to cement himself as one of the top tight ends, and he will likely be a factor in this game. Musgrave, though his effectiveness has been limited due to injury, could factor in and create some mismatches downfield.

Now, to the running game. Josh Jacobs was the strength of the Packers' offense last season, and the Packers have added a powerful left guard to strengthen the interior of their offensive line alongside Elgton Jenkins, now lining up at center. We haven't really seen Banks throughout the preseason, but there is a lot of excitement about what he could add to the brute force of this offensive line.

The Lions have always been good against the run. They added DL Tyleik Williams in the first round of this year's draft, and he'll likely line up alongside DJ Reader to create a pretty good run defense on the interior. The Lions are without one of their best run-defenders, though, in Alim McNeil, who went out last year with an ACL injury that will continue to keep him sidelined for the start of this season. It will be a good test for this re-modeled interior offensive line of the Packers to see how they stack up against Detroit, and Josh Jacobs will likely give them a bit of an edge as long as they can hold up.

What to See on Defense

Alright, let's get it out of the way. Micah Parsons is playing today. Let's stop with the injury skepticism. Will he play or not? He's playing today. How much he plays will remain to be seen, as you could see him on a snap count, but the new star pass rusher in town will be looking to make an impact on this game. How the Packers' new-look pass rush fares could play a huge role in the outcome of this game. With Jared Goff now Ben Johnson-less with a new offensive coordinator, will he still look like the QB he was last year? There's only one way to find out, and that's to disrupt him. While Hafley will likely want to see how his defensive line can get home with a four-man rush, I do anticipate a lot of utilization of linebackers like Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker in the pass rush.

Stunts from the defensive line and linebackers could be used at a premium to confuse the Lions' new-look interior offensive line on passing downs. Frank Ragnow is no longer at the center of their line after retiring in the offseason, and right guard Kevin Zeitler departed Detroit in free agency, leaving Graham Glasgow to shift from guard to center with Tate Rutledge moving to RG and Christian Mahogany settling in on the left. There's no doubt Jeff Hafley will test this interior often.

A pass rush will be essential against receivers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams alongside rookie standout Isaac TeSlaa. The Packers' corners are perhaps one of the biggest question marks heading into this season with newcomer Nate Hobbs and Keisean Nixon leading the way a the position. Javon Bullard is slated to be the slot corner, and those three will be tested today by the Lions receivers, as well as tight end Sam LaPorta, one of the best at the position in the league. Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams will likely be helping over the top to keep these receivers in check, but getting to Goff first will be essential in slowing the Lions' passing attack.

Now to the Lions' running attack with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. After Kenny Clark went to the Cowboys in the Micah Parsons trade, it left questions about the Packers' interior defensive line. Who's going to step up? Devonte Wyatt and Colby Wooden are the starting defensive tackles, with Karl Brooks backing them up, but neither is really touted as a top run defender. Nazir Stackhouse could factor in plugging up the middle, but with his inexperience, going up against Detroit's highly successful running attack would certainly be baptism by fire.

What could work to the Packers' advantage, though, against the run could be, as mentioned before, the new interior offensive line of Detroit. If there are a few hiccups early with those new starters, the Packers could take advantage of slowing the attack. But if not, this defense is going to have to get creative in stopping the run before it becomes a problem.

Extra Notes

Say it with me, folks, "we don't have to worry about our kicker!" Doesn't that feel great? For the first season opener since the Mason Crosby era, the kicker isn't a topic of conversation. That's because Brandon McManus has been very reliable since joining the team in week 7 of the 2024 season. When you're a team with championship aspirations, the last thing on your mind should be whether or not you can trust your kicker. McManus should give the Packers confidence that they'll come away with points any time they get inside their opponent's 35-yard line. Of course, we want six, but it's nice to know we can rely on McManus to put up 3 if we need him to.

Kick and punt returns should be interesting to see today. The "unofficial" depth chart showed Jayden Reed as the punt returner, backed up by Matthew Golden, and Keisean Nixon as the kick returner, backed up by Bo Melton. No one really stole this position in training camp, which is why I believe Reed and Nixon still lead the way on the depth chart. But I wouldn't be surprised to see this change up a little, especially if Mecole Hardman is elevated from the practice squad for game day.

In the End

This is the first home game to kick off the season in Matt LaFleur's Packers' tenure. Which is honestly insane, but we'll complain about that another time. It's also one of the biggest games of the season, right off the bat. Lambeau should feel like a playoff atmosphere today, so if you are heading to the game, get loud.

After this big test, the Packers have another test in turning around quickly to play Washington on Thursday Night Football. So, we could see some players on snap counts today to keep everyone fresh, still, for that big turnaround.

The Packers went 1-5 in the division last year. Which very much tainted their 11-6 record overall. Hopefully, we'll be able to come out swinging in 2025, establishing ourselves as a force to be reckoned with in securing a victory today. Go Pack Go.

I like the Packers chances in the Pass game against the lions 20th ranked pass D last season. Key will be getting the infantry moving the chains with the Abrams Tank Jacobs, then "boom"...unleash the Air Force. LaFleur needs to call a solid game.

I expect the Kraft and Musgrave are going to have a productive afternoon. Then another sonic boom with Golden, wide open, leaving a contrail deep.

It is going to be fun to see what Hafley has dialed up too. He has so many tools in his tool kit.

Anzalone and Campbell are good cover LBs. Then they have two All-Pro level safeties in Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. Assaulting the Edges may work best for the Pack and beat down on Davenport and test Hutchinson's take off speed after the surgery for the broken leg bone. Golden can take any of the CBs 1:1 I imagine Hafley's game plan was designed to let Cooper create a lot of trouble and fit Parsons into a few stunt games. Shut down Goff's first look windows and get to him from the middle attacking Rutledge and Mahogony who Hafley knows from B.C. Should be a close game. See if Banks and Rhyan show up.

I don’t know who comes out on top- the players on the fiield take care of that for me- but the entirety of my attention will be on the Packers new-look offensive line.

They have absolutely improved their starting OL from a talent perspective by jettisoning meyers and sliding Jenkins over with banks plugging the hole left at LG, but I haven’t seen this group play together along the interior and that takes time.

It will be interesting to see if Morgan splits reps in the opener at any position, which some have suggested he may do.

Let's remember, we only had 206 yards passing against them last year in December...Albeit, on only 20 attempts and mostly, because we started so badly, trying to establish the run.

Once we started passing to Kraft and Watson, their defense opened up more.

Much has been made of Brinson's and Stackhouse's inexperience, but they will be playing against a very familiar opponent today. Tate Ratledge, the Lions rookie RG, is a draftee from Georgia as are both Brinson and Stackhouse. I suspect they have played against each other many times during Georgia practices. This might be a good matchup for the Packer rookie DLs in their first NFL regular season game.

I will be at the game today, my first in a very long time. Looking forward to the Packers demolishing the kitties!

That's a keen observation, Guam. 2 Bulldogs vs 1 Bulldog. Of course Ratledge knows them too. All three know who holds the advantage based on results on the practice field.

I am at the game too...enjoy it. Hope the D gets introduced today. I sit in the SW side around the 10-15 yard line, halfway up the bowl...so I'd get to see Parsons running out of the Tunnel right at me. The crowd's roar might drown out the flyover!

I'm told our tickets are on the visitor side around the 25 yard line. Not sure where that is in relation to you as I have never been to Lambeau before. I used to go to Packer games in Milwaukee when I was a kid but never got to Lambeau and then my career took me far from Wisconsin. Really looking forward to seeing the stadium and plan to arrive early to take in the sights!

Guam! Be sure to stop at Kroll’s for a burger before the game! It’s also a pretty good place to park if you can get it.

You’re going to love this. Have fun, and bring home a winner!

My sneaking suspicion is that the Packers coaches believe that Stackhouse is going to create a 1/2 a ton pile of people right where the hole is supposed to be. There was an article quoting Wyatt that made him seem like Gilbert Brown v. 2. I don't know about that. But one of the coaches also commented that they'd use him in the base.

The 4-3 base is half the snaps. He could be on the field more than we think.

I'm sure the Packers are more concerned about the passing yards than rushing yards, so they'll give up more yards on the ground than they did last year. Hopefully, the tradeoff will be that we win more of the passing downs. Every incomplete pass, takeaway, or sack is a negative play for the offense and a win for the defense.

I'm betting Hafley is thinking that Goff might throw it 35 times or more, and he'll complete 25 or so. So that's 10 plays we won on, compared to their 25. If we can tilt that 25-10 with a takeaway, or may a few less completions, and make it more of a 20-15 split, that would be a pretty good day for the defense.

He wants Detroit to throw because that's the best way to get takeaways, and he wants this defense to get takeaways.

Enjoy the game, Guam. What a game to start with for your first visit to Lambeau Field!

That is interesting about the Georgia rookies competing against each other on the line today. Inexperience vs. inexperience. It's hard for rookies to make an impact on the D-line, but it should help that they will be competing, at least in part, against another rookie.

I'm excited but nervous about this one. I wish we would have brought back Rasul for some corner depth. Love needs to hit our receivers in stride instead of them having to make unnecessary adjustments. He also needs to use his legs for easy first downs if opportunity knocks. And for the love Lombardi, don't get behind the sticks with m'fing penalties!!! Go Pack!!!!

My first post since the end of last season. It's hard enough for me to get focus time during the season!

My main question for today is - can MLF get the team ready? Too many big games and some not big ones that the Packers have come out flat in. Opening games too. I still consider his coaching to be a weak link. And there have been a lot of changes to manage. Let's hope his first home opener is motivation to up his game.

Next question is JL. Even with all the other new players, this is still the most important position and even though he is the starter, he has not made us forget about our last two HOF'ers. So let's hope he ups his game too. I'm perfectly ok with a 'good' but not great qb, a wrecking defense and a great running game. That could win a SB too.

Now let's go get 'em.

It would make sense to activate Hardman for today for kickoffs and, or punt returns. Reed is injured and Golden needs to focus on WR . We certainly don't Golden injured. Hardman did well for the Chiefs. This is just common sense.

LEADERSHIP just became a real thing at 1265 Lombardi Ave. The Micah Parsons trade will pay dividends across the entire team (players & coaches) not just at DE, as a result of #1’s dedicated leadership qualities. Great trade.

Who remembers “toughness “ as a descriptor of this Packers team? I’m convinced Parsons’ attitude will permeate throughout this Packers organization. Gutekunst already added toughness to the roster in both FA and the draft. His work in delivering Parsons to GB via trade was first-rate icing on what I thought was a great cake. Jacobs. McKinney. Cooper. Banks. Hobbs. Golden. Belton. Williams. And, more.

I think that’s the biggest change on Green Bay’s 2025 roster. It is time for the Packers to - settle - some - scores ...

“It is time!” Time to run through some faces.

Speaking of LEADERSHIP I posted this over at the Watch Party tab (didn't see this article at first)
Since it's awhile until game time. I suggest people check out Ed Policy's new monthly column (Policy's Perspective) on the Packers team site. Some of his comments:
"I know many of you were excited to see us add Micah Parsons to an already impressive core of talented players. I cannot speak highly enough of Brian Gutekunst, Russ Ball, Matt LaFleur and their teams for pulling together that deal."
"As President and CEO, I will ensure Brian, Matt, and Russ have all the guidance and resources they need to field a championship-caliber team. Our brand-new, state-of-the-art locker room is a perfect example of how we invest in our players and equip our team for success."

"We have terrific football leadership, and I will support them in every way I can while not meddling in their jobs. No team needs two head coaches or two GMs. I will act as a chief facilitator, ensuring that our football leaders are communicating with one another and that they are getting everything they need from me and from one another to achieve our collective goal of winning football games and ultimately, winning the Super Bowl."

Kind of puts the "dagger" in Cory's recent column, lol.
The "other" Micah has been activated for the game.

Also, interesting article from the Washington post (I think) that says Jerry Jones refused to negotiate with Parsons' agent until it was too late.

Looking forward to the game and I'm hoping our OFFENSE is red hot! I'm not worried about the defense. We shall see! GPG!

I will take a win, however we get it. We lost that game you speak of in December.

The 31 points was provided partially by a Nixon interception and a 4th down stop that provided short fields. Jacobs ran 18 times for 66 yards with a long of 19...you do the math...constantly running into Detroit's 8-9 man boxes. We put our D onto the field with short rests. Packers had 17 1st downs vs. the Lions 27. For me, I want us to have better balance and challenge them more.

Objectively, Jacobs also had 3 TDs in that game, too. The team's run-blocking seemed to bear-down near the goal line, though a great deal of credit has to go to Jacobs. We also ran better when we spread the Detroit D out.

Everything you've said is t rue. The fact that Jacobs had a lot of short runs and one long one doesn't surprise me, because that's pretty much the case for everyone. Most runs in the NFL are 3 yards or less.

The point is, we took the load off of Love, as we did in every game after the break. Running Jacobs into the line was a better choice than giving Love an opportunity for a big screw up. MLF was patient. Then,in the second half, we opened it up a little.

I agree that if teams are throwing 8 man boxes at you and daring you to throw, then you might as well try to throw it over their head.

That's why it is a called a game, I guess. There is no one best way, though we may disagree. I will say that in practice, when running against 8-9 man boxes, if you break the line of scrimmage untouched, you are running for awhile. :-)

I watched the December game from last year again. Here are some thoughts that we must address for today:

*Jordan had something like 31 yards passing in the 1st half, prior to heating-up in the 2nd half.
*The Lions constantly had 8 and even 9 man boxes, selling out to stop Jacobs and rush Jordan. It was not until the 2nd half that we started to handle this. In fact, we constantly ran INTO this alignment, expecting (hoping?) for Jacobs to break through.
*Lions had 7 pressures to our 5, using Pro Football Reference. This was baloney. Jordan was knocked down 6 six times alone to our 2 of Goff. Goff constantly got rid of the ball on time while Jordan was obviously scanning the field, if not running to avoid a sack.
*Lions constantly went for it on 4th and short. It cost them only once. On one 3rd and short, we did not cover the A gaps and Goff simply sneaked for a 1st down. Let's be smart and tough, Packers!
*The Lion DBs constantly held our receivers, while their receivers (especially St. Brown & LaPorta), pushed off Packer secondary guys. We must play the game that is being called.
*IMO, McKinney had a bad game, with Goff constantly passing in-front of McKinney. Importantly, standing 7 yards deep in the end zone, when the Lions are on the 2 yard line, should not happen. They ran the same flat stop-and in play twice for TDs on our LBs, in front of McKinney. One time with our D not even ready for the hike. Again, no more! Let's be ready and confident.
*Overall our D played well, and tough, while our O started slow, and overly relied on Jacobs and the run game. It was a hard fought game, but never felt like the Packers dominated any portion of it.

“Jordan had something like 31 yards passing in the 1st half, prior to heating-up in the 2nd half.“

This has been my #1 observation of Jordan Love since he took the reigns- he’s a slow starter and it typically takes 9ne or two quarters of play for him to settle into the game and hit his stride.

This is also where he tends to have accuracy issues- specifically, he throws high on medium depth throws and arguably too hot on short routes.

These issues almost always fade by the 2nd Q or entering into the second half, which suggests to me it’s a nerves/flow issue. Trying to do too much early in the games.
lol
It may just be the player he is, but I hoping the organization and Love himself have noticed this trend and have worked on pre-game relaxation or whatever may help Jordan become a fast starter, because once he’s dialed in, he’s got a hot hand.

Oppy, "This has been my #1 observation of Jordan Love since he took the reigns- he’s a slow starter and it typically takes one or two quarters of play for him to settle into the game and hit his stride."
I couldn't agree more. Favre was typically the same way; he'd throw high at the start of games because he was so amped up. I believe he at some point said (paraphrasing) he "needed to get hit" before he'd settle in. I remember Arod having some issues with that before McCarthy changed the so-called "scripted" plays at the start of games to shorter, quicker passes (kind of what Ben Johnson likes to do). Those shorter, surer, passes were the start of the "Running the Table" period. I hope MLF does less of those (allegedly "Surprise") long passes on 3rd and short and instructs Love to just USE THE TIGHTENDS AND RB's and move the chains.

Agree, Oppy,

Favre sometimes didn't start well until he took a good hit and sometimes Rodgers didn't play well until someone agitated him. Let's see if Jordan has worked on the nerves during the off-season, and found that special green ring.

Another extra note: Beware of the stripes! After seeing a flimsy taunting call in the Eagles game against Nolan Smith, our players are going to have to be mindful of this. The new emphasis of taunting will mean everyone will have to control themselves after finishing a play. This sort of thing has been going on for so long that it's almost a part of the NFL culture, and it's not a behavior easily unlearned in the heat of battle.

Yeah, I saw that. You usually don't see that kind of frustration out of them.

Practice squad elevations were announced yesterday, and the only one for the Packers was Micah Robinson. So no Mecole Hardman. It will probably be either Jayden Reed or Keisean Nixon returning punts.

I don't recall an opening day matchup as exciting as this one for as long as I've been a fan, and that goes way back into the 70s. It's a perfect storm of factors coming together. It feels like the Packers need to win this one. They need it more than the Lions do anyway. But it's important to remember that it's just one game, and there will be 16 more games left when it's over. A loss will not mean the season is over, and a win, even if it's a convincing win, won't mean the Packers are going to have a great season. It will just mean that they held serve in their home game against the Lions.

Agree, GregC I predict over-reactions no matter what happens. There always are. :)
