As Donovan Jennings watches his chances of making the PS, much less the 53, evaporate the more he plays.
We are watching two inept offenses. Daniel Jones can't hit the broad side of a barn so his wide, wide, open TE runs back to the LOS. Defenses are going to look great. If you are not making plays on defense against these offenses, that is a black mark.

Jennings beaten to a pulp immediately at the snap erases the big pass to Hardman with a hold. He doesn't look like the 8th, 9th or even 10th OL ought to look like. That said, he might be one of the top 10 in camp.
Never underestimate the scarcity of decent offensive linemen amongst the 32 teams.

So far the Packers offense has run ever time on 1st down. Obviously not a real game plan put in today.

To be fair, other than Jennings, the rest of the 2nd string offensive line has been pretty good. I would like to see some bigger holes when running. Of course, GB does have Rhyan and Morgan playing, both of whom is sort of first string guys, at least in the sense that one of them is likely to be a starter.

Yeah, I think Belton has lost focus this game. Needs to get his head back into the game. But, I agree better.

Lost focus is a courteous way of putting it, Mr Davis. "Possibly lost his job" is another. 5 penalties in one half!

I think LaFleur drives the point home by having Belton wear a baseball cap and take his jersey off for the second half. That is, if they have enough offensive linemen since there is an entire half yet to endure, I mean, play.

I think Belton answers the question....
Why does the NFL test players on the wonderlic?

Willis got away with one. Indy should have gotten an interception.
Olapado showing much better coverage ability this week after some lapses. Olapado is good near the line of scrimmage - he can tackle.
Melton PBU. He is a cinch now.

And even more egregiously bad ones. Sure, nice hit on the goal line, but I don't think this dude has a clue where he is supposed to be. Talent to burn, but doesn't seem to understand the game.

He is being used differently than he has been in the past in terms of role and system. Perhaps that is part of it? It’s weird that he shows really good I instincts sometimes and none at others. Perhaps that explains it?
That said I thought Hopper was the best ILB we had out there today. He’s coming on it seems. Welch had one bad play in coverage, but was otherwise very good I thought. I ask myself it McDuffie would make plays any of those 3 did.

I guess it's definitely possible, but man, 4 years in a big time college program and 5 years in the NFL... you would think he'd be a little more switched on. It's hard for me to imagine any heady 5-year veteran making some of those mistakes, even in a brand new system. I know Pack-a-day and others have been saying he's looked good in camp, but I'm not optimisitic.
I agree on Hopper, I may need to take back some of the things I said about him last year...

Kitan Oladapo is a player that I like as a long-term development.
He's got a ton of potential and I love his instincts and aggression.
Early during todays' game, there was a play where the defense was generally rolling to the right, and Oladapo spotted a the back trying to squirt out to the defensive left. He was the first to switch back against the grain and start flowing to the left, even though he was at the third level of the defense and was not the first defender to the ball carrier, you could see him sniff out the screen before the ball was delivered and before the rest of the defense.
The Packers are even deeper at safety than many already realize.

Remember Colts have their 1st string offense vs. a smattering of 2nd & 3rd for our D. I have to focus on some Positives:
Monk performing better pass blocking then last week.
Hardman wide open a few times
Nice one handed grab by Hicks
Enagabare some nice plays
Thegreatreynoldo
August 16, 2025 at 01:23 pm
Enagbare has looked like a man among boys. agreed on Monk. Maybe he moves to center soon.
I had Hadden as CB #5 entering the game. Now I have him #6 and firmly on the bubble.
I am coming to the conclusion that the officials have decided that if they called every hold committed by offensive linemen in this game, the game would be unwatchable. Hold on Mosby and on enagbare not called.
RobinsonDavis
August 16, 2025 at 01:55 pm
Saw the holds, too, and I thought Heath had a good complaint, too. You just can't be crying to the refs, though. Hadden has been a step out of coverage all day.
Coldworld
August 16, 2025 at 05:53 pm
Enagbare did not have a bad day, but the whole DL really did not manage to create any pressure, especially early when he was in. Jones was 7-11 and 101 yards despite just missing the WR on a couple of potential big play throws.
Overall, PFF's early tracking metrics have the Packers managing just six pressures all game and one sack, by Deslin Alexander I believe. Hardly a roaring endorsement of any rusher in line to play. Add to that DJ Giddens and Tyler Goodson averaged almost 5.0 yards per carry between them, though mostly that came later.
Alexander may well have earned a PS berth. Of the rest, no one really stood out as above average to me. We need someone to step up as a threat.

Elgersma getting the nod ahead of Big Cliff. Hmmmm
wow, that is terrible effort by Emmanuel Wilson. gives up the sack with that horrible blocking effort. Elgersma is still upright if Brooks had been in there.

August 16, 2025 at 01:55 pm
Yup, I thought #31 lost any chance he might have had to be RB#2 on that play. He didn't even turn to look at the player he let past him until the play was over.. As much as I love him running with the ball, that just won't fly.
Thegreatreynoldo
August 16, 2025 at 02:07 pm
I wondered if he was supposed to (or thought he was supposed to) chip and then leak out? Was the pocket designed to roll to the right? Something else? I probably should not have gone to effort so quickly. It did look odd precisely because he did not look at the player he let go by him, like he was trying to get to his own mark on the field and then look back at the QB.

"Elgersma getting the nod ahead of Big Cliff. Hmmmm"
Just rotating the playing time and giving him a long look. My guess is we see Clifford play ahead of Elgersma against Seattle next week.
Didn't watch, but followed the game stream online, so I'll limit my comments about individual play--but Elgersma sounds like a gamer.

He’s got talent. His arm is impressive. He’s ahead of where I thought he would be given the increased standard of athletes and the subtle differences in play. He’s got potential even with the undeniable rough edges—he had at least 2 plays that he should never have made—a bad decision to throw for an interception (nullified by a post play penalty) and holding onto the ball far too long early on, leading to an unnecessary sack. However, that’s to be expected. Right now I think he’s as much chance of winning a game now as Clifford. Like Willis, had most of his best plays negated. I think he’s on the PS and next year may be a contender.

For the life of me, I know it's against MLF's nature, but I want the 1st string guys in there and have them play until they get it right. By all means, the 2nd string guys are getting the majority of the snaps, and they STILL look disjointed with mental errors.

But who stood out on D? Hopper, Welch and Oladapo for me. No one else seemed to increase their stature. No CB (perhaps Melton). No DL except maybe Deslin Alexander and Keith Randolph for the PS. Maybe Oladapo and Welch impact the expected 53 man roster make up, but that’s about it
Oppy
August 16, 2025 at 06:21 pm
Oladapo will have a better career as a safety than Bullard when all is said and done. Might not be with the Packers unfortunately, but I think Oladapo has a significantly higher ceiling.

The Packers O line first half is a testament to their great coaching, instilling discipline and the basics of the game...like where to line up before the snap, and not to shove an opponent out of bounds in the back, after the whistle.
The depth of the O line is so scary bad today.

Imagine watching the draft in April and wondering why, WHY why the Packers drafted Belton @ Rd2, John Williams, brought in Banks.
Thegreatreynoldo
August 16, 2025 at 02:17 pm
Belton got beat to the inside at the goal line to cause a loss of yardage. GB scored the next play. Belton making physical and mental mistakes all game. I would have yanked him. This is not helping him.

Deslin Alexandre with the tackle on the kickoff return. He made some plays with the 3s as well including a pressure on a stunt. I think his PS spot might be safe. At 6'3" and 264 pounds, lots of numbers ahead of him.

Now, some poor sod has to write an article that is insightful and prescient, preferably one with a theme. I plan to steal one of my son's beers from the refrigerator and make a sandwich. Ah, an Erdinger dunkel. There are rewards for raising one's children right.

I won't describe the sandwich. My son went to the russian store for his 94-year-old grandfather who was born in Latvia just south of Estonia. He got some rye bread, the kind they don't really make in the US. Naturally, he got some sandwich meats and a cheeses. Maybe I can con him into making it for me as well.

That poor sod could write about how Gute was prescient to pick Belton in the 2nd, and John Williams, AND pick up Banks. NObody wanted to hear about needs on the offensive line, but that's the one position that totally came apart *and then* disintegrated last season. The only way
Gute could've done better is pick OL at @Rd1 instead of Golden. Pick our poison and be happy with it.

I feel better, but I don't feel good. I thought we were in good shape up front on offensive, breath and depth-wise. The front 5 may be all right once injuries abate. BUT, our backup
O-linemen are BAD. Last week it was Monk; this week, Telfort and especially Belton, a number 2 draft choice. If a starter goes down, we're in trouble.
On positive side, cheers for Clifford, winning the game with arm and legs. Well done.

Taylor Elgersma did more for himself than anyone else today. He looked really good: strong arm and pretty accurate. The coaches put him in early and kept him in a long time, and he made the most of it. Sean Clifford also looked okay, but I like Elgersma's arm strength better.
Emmanuel Wilson looked a little rusty (a missed block and a fumble), but he had a great catch and run, showing off his speed. Chris Brooks can't make plays like that. They should both make the roster.
Marshawn Lloyd also had a great catch and run but came out of the game with tightness in his hamstring. Not good.
The writers at packerswire thought Israel Abanikada had a really good game, but he looks pretty pedestrian to me, by NFL standards. Just a straight-ahead runner. I like Amar Johnson better.
Julian Hicks made a one-handed circus catch for a big gain that was called back by a penalty. He made two other catches, but one of those was called back because of a penalty as well. Is he sneaking into the conversation for WR #6? He looks more talented than Malik Heath to me.
Anthony Belton was a disaster in the first half, with five penalties, but cleaned up his act in the second half. Good for LaFLeur keeping him in the game and letting him work through it.
I saw Isaiah Simmons look very soft on a running play, but a couple plays later he put a big hit on a ballcarrier to keep him out of the end zone. So it was a mixed bag for him. I continue to like Ty'Ron Hopper better than Simmons, but it's lonely on this island.
Bo Melton gave up a couple of completions in soft zone coverage, but I don't think they were really his fault. He made a great pass breakup on the one play that he contested.
I didn't see much of Kalen King this time, after he had a nice game against the Jets.
The Colts were still playing Jonathan Taylor late in the first quarter. The announcers mentioned that he has the 6th best career yards per carry in NFL history. The top five are all in the Hall of Fame.
One disappointment was the lack of pass rush. They got one sack by Deslin Alexandre on a stunt, but I didn't see anyone get much of a pass rush on their own.
I think the only starters who played were the punter and long-snapper. Their #1 kicker didn't even play. The backup missed a field goal and an extra point.

Same re Julian Hicks. Very last outing of 2024 training camp Hick had an amazing catch on a loooong throw that CLINCHES his worth as an NFL receiver IMHO. Hicks went into the air, nabbed the ball mid-flight full-sprint no loss of momentum under full control. Analyzing the details, speed, technique totally useless & unnecessary. All ya gots to do is see that one play and know he's the real deal. Hicks'll get called up due to injuries if he's not on the 53, can't wait to see him in live action
