Packers Vs. Bengals - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm
Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.
By JerseyAl
After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I either focus on a theme, more nuanced observations, or just things I didn't notice watching live. These can be but are less likely to be "highlight" plays. I present these to you with a short explanation why I picked them and then let you readers discuss the plays.
Field Goal Protection - Ah, thank God everything is fixed up on the field goal protection unit, right? Ummmm, not so fast. This was the first kick attempt by emergency fill-in Lucas Havrisick. Watch the left side of the line closely. Hard to believe, but the outside player (in this case Karl Brooks) once again chooses to worry about the outside rusher instead of helping with the overload on Rasheed Walker. Walker gets blown up and could have used some help, but there was none as Brooks moves away to put hands on the player that will most likely NEVER get in fast enough to block a kick. Are they not drilling this into their players' heads??? For his part, Walker's pad level is terrible compared to the rest of the players blocking, who are crouched down low at the snap. No surprise he can't hold up against two rushers in that position. In fairness, the protection looked better the rest of the game, BUT, the Bengals chose to overload the other side on those plays and the right side of the Packers line did a better job of protection. Overall, there's still reason for concern, here.
Golden Opportunity - The call has been coming from all directions (including mine) to feature Matthew Golden more. That means more plays where Love looks for him as the primary target. On this play, despite having all day in the pocket, Love never even looks Golden's way. Instead he (in my terms) forces the ball to Doubs who he is solely focused on. Doubs is covered tightly. Luckily for Love, the high pass pulled Doubs back and out of bounds, which may have prevented the chance of the DB cutting in front and intercepting the ball. Golden is wide open for what would have been at least a 20 yard gain. If Golden is one on one with the safety protecting against a deep pass, this route is like taking candy from a baby, especially if the play action holds the linebackers from dropping, which was the case here. You have a weapon with Golden, use it!
Parsons Headlock - I've seen worse, but I'm bringing this to your attention because I've noticed this technique being used on Parsons over the course of the Packers' first five games. Is this not holding? Like I said, I've seen even more egregious examples, but in my opinion, reaching out and grabbing a player's head and holding on is basically a headlock and should be worthy of a flag. The official is right there looking at it, so, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong? What do you think?

Thanks Al, I agree with all 3 HMMMMs.
I don't watch the all 22 so I miss all of the passing game except the qb and the targeted receiver.
In real time you can see jlo lock in on someone but never see what's been missed. He's got to move thru his reads quicker, especially with the current status of the oline play.
I did see the Parsons headlock and asked my wife "isn't a headlock holding?"
Evidently not. The referee was indeed witnessing it.
If our newly signed kicker misses any one of his 5 kicks, I'm sure the Bengals were on their way to a winning td as time expired instead of kicking the desperate 56 yarder.
What in God's green holy flock needs to happen before we practice and emphasize special teams?
If the execution doesn't improve, we'll be 10 - 6 - 1 and lose in the first round of playoffs.
Oh wait, mlf is going to look into it?

Or maybe it’s time for Tom, Walker, and the rest of the boys to start locking heads too? 😬

During the game against the Bengals, they showed a replay of Rasheed Walker doing the same thing to Trey Hendrickson and getting away with it.

Damn straight, TK. There's not much a good ol' side headlock won't fix.

I hope the kicking unit retains some of the key offensive linemen that they added for this game. I think it will be ok once they get dialed in and practice together more.
I hope when Love watches these plays, he'll start noticing some of these open looks and also will use his outlets more (RBs & TEs) instead of forcing it or holding the ball too long. Seems every play there's somebody wide open. Maybe that's true for most teams but for me it brings back ARod only forcing it to Adams, which to be truthful did work allot.
I've seen a lot of holding going on in the games I've watched. I guess it's like an umpire and his strike box. As long as they call it the same both ways. The headlock with the strangle hold is definitely holding though, Al.

No doubt that it should be a holding call, especially because it involves the head and neck area. A play the made me go, come on!!!, was Love sliding way too early and missing an important 1st down.

I’m with you Pete—the Love slide was very early and unnecessary—ridiculous.

Thanks as always for cutting to the chase, particularly with Golden. Who yes absolutely should start getting more attention.. I just watched a replay of the game and the passes he caught. That's one fast shifty dude with great hands . So why they wouldn't use him more going forward is beyond me. We shall see..
As far as what constitutes holding, horse collars, facemasks etc I must just be old, but my instincts tell me that should without question be ruled a penalty. The one against him in the Dallas game I believe was so bad ,it was incomprehensible as to why they didn't call that one but I guess we all know why.

Play 2: Maybe time to start looking for Golden as the first option? I'll bet if you do he would light up the stat sheet.
Play 3: Sure looks like a penalty, like holding or hands to the face. But the umpire (a newly promoted one) is standing there looking at the whole thing. The Brad Allen referee crew calls the least number of penalties per game, so maybe that has something to do with it, I don't know.

Are they really supposed to let that outside rusher go in unimpeded on field goal attempts? Why does blocking on field goal attempts look so hard all of a sudden? I've always thought these were routine plays in which the blockers did not have to make snap decisions.

Walker was absolutely blown up on that play. I did not see it watching the game at Lambeau...but wow...that could have been another block. Walker had a terrible stance and should know better...but who's coaching him?

Greg, maybe that is the problem in that these blockers think this is a routine play so he takes that play off!

This was brought up by LaFluer after the Cowboys block. The TE (in this case a position on the line so Walker) is supposed to block 2 people and Brooks gets the outside rusher. This is what is coached so Brooks did what he was asked to do.

Feild Goal ... It's a sucker play line up a speedy wide rusher to draw Karl Brooks outside, send two players to overpower a lineman that has been scouted as playing high and susceptible to pass rushes.
Headlock, referees seem to be allowing that indivertibly and for only a second or so, For Parsons this is beyond the acceptable if not ridiculous. Time to contact NFL Rules committee with films and a need for explanation as to what constitutes holding.
J Love, sometimes gets overly committed to a route and stays locked in and in this case the ball to a well-covered Doubs. At this stage of his career, you would think love is way beyond that level of play but still suffers from it time to time.
also note on that pass the Packers had to double team both DE with our tight ends because of our average tackle play

I think MLF should inform the refs before the game that Parsons will be held repeatedly and to watch for it. This may help.

Today, Le fleur was asked whether they would be using Golden more, and he was quoted as saying, “I mean, it just is what it is, guys. I know everybody wants us to force-feed guys the ball, but it’s really not how we’ve done it around here, and I don’t plan on changing that."
That's just stupid. Golden is your best receiver, and it couldn't be more obvious, yet you limit his snaps and throw to him two or three times a game. Le Fleur is an idiot.

It will not change until the TOP changes it....Common sense is not too common in GB. Same thing with Kraft, a top 3 TE in the NFL squandered in GB.

He's an unwatchable interview.
Did he honestly say "it's not how we've done it here"? Didn't he coach 12 and 17 for two years?
Besides, nobody's asking him to force it to anybody.
Throw it to the open receiver!
No allusion of complexity needed.

Right—finding more targets for a superior player is not forcing the ball. An ignorant remark by MLF.

I mean he had second-most snaps this week. But Love has to look for him.

The holding crap has become maddening and I can’t believe Parsons hasn’t lost his composure with the refs.
I suspect the the Packers have forwarded grievances to the league?
Sometimes my conspiratorial mind is reminded of the numerous camera shots we see each week of the richest owners: the Hunts, Waltons, Lurie, Jones.
The Eagles/Broncos game really caught my attention. A battle of rich owners and the refs unable to determine how they should behave. They apparently decided to appease the Waltons when the refs picked up their flag(s) on an extremely obvious grounding by Nix and then ignored another PI that would’ve likely allowed an Eagles win.
For the last two games, many of us have suggested Golden become a major target (Kraft too). I’m glad you mentioned this Al.
I’m glad you pointed out the need for continued improvement for STs.
Go Packers!!!

I read where Golden stated that he is happy with the number of times he has been targeted. Sure he would like more targets but he understands his fellow WR's need targets as well. He seems to be a great locker room guy that wants to get along with everyone.
We are lucky to have him.

Agree—glad to have him. I think he becomes a pseudo Tyreek if we get him the ball more.

I agree with all 3 points, but put a red circle around the player you're highlighting to help us out.

With the Parsons headlock there was hands to face before that as well. It is getting pathetic how many blatant hands to the face and holds that opposing OLs are getting away with against the Packers. It almost feels like the NFL saw what the Packers did to the Lions OL and said "we cannot let a defense be that good so just allow any and all holds against them so the opposing team can score."

Yes—it seems as if it’s blatantly ignored—the holds are extremely obvious.
