Packers Select Wide Receiver, Savion Williams, in 2025 NFL Draft - Round 3

Savion Williams, TCU, Wide Receiver

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6' 3" 222 LBs, 4.48s 40, 1.52s 10-yard split

VIDEO:

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

Developmental wideout who offers an alluring blend of physical gifts and untapped potential. Williams is big, strong and fast but very raw as a route-runner and is unreliable with his hands.

NFL.com

TCU Horned Frogs wide receiver Savion Williams is a diverse weapon who boasts impressive physical abilities and a promising bundle of potential for his NFL franchise. Williams was unleashed as a diverse weapon for TCU this season. His powerful frame and explosive open-field speed created matchup challenges for defenses and offered the Horned Frogs the ability to be ambiguous with their personnel packaging.

The 33rd Team

The evaluation of Williams is actually really simple. He’s a rare athlete who is big and runs like he’s punishing the ground. How you value that in a receiver who has shaky at best hands is up to the evaluator, though.

 - Acme Packing Company

CAREER NOTES:

Williams is a converted QB who played receiver at TCU for five seasons. In that time, he was a two-time All-Big 12 receiver and played in the senior bowl earlier this year.

Williams peaked with 611 yards receiving and 322 yards rushing last year - both the highest in his time at TCU.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Savion Williams profiles like a classic LaFleur-era Packers receiver: he's big, fast, blocks, creates YAC, and can't catch. Williams may develop into a good role player in the NFL, but you have to believe that he will be used as more of a gadget and special teams player only over the next few years in Green Bay.

Williams compares strongly to players like Cordarelle Patterson and Ty Montgomery and like those two his NFL career may end in an evolution to running back. He took 84 snaps in the backfield last year for TCU and may start as low as 8th on the Packers' wide receiver depth chart this off-season.

COMMENTARY:

The selection of Savion Williams likely gave heart palpitations to the majority of fans in Green Bay and around Wisconsin for the draft. Williams is a classic plus athlete and plus YAC player who doesn't do the basics of the position well. TCU relied on Williams to carry their offense for much of this season but they had to manufacture his touches. Packers wide receiver coach Ryan Mahaffey has a challenge on his hands with two rookie receivers who lacked significant college production.

The Packers are signaling a lot with this draft thus far: they are satisfied with their personnel on defense but they were not with the showing the offense had in the playoffs against the Eagles. They're getting bigger on the offensive line and more dynamic in the receiver corps. Finally, it's worth noting that Savion Williams makes the Packers 3/3 on draft picks who had visits with the team.

Apparently the brass must have said enough already, way too many dropsies. Guys who can't catch footbalss aren't winning football games.
I got Watson done, Reed stays, the two new guys and then who. One or two have to he cut and that's okay they didn't pan out.. Poor picks by Gutt did this.

If they've had enough with the dropsies, drafting a player with the dropsies is counterproductive. Interesting draft profile, but a third rounder on a gadget player seems pricey.

Would a player similar to Deebo be worth a 3rd rounder? If so, than he’s not pricey at all, and you could argue it was a value. This guy is going to kick some ass out there and with out #2 pick, we can now say, OK, Lions let’s get physical. This team is going to own the TOP in most every game.

Just quit it….WR’s with dropsies, can learn to focus better and catch the ball….With your logic, Jones, Jennings, Jordy & Adams would’ve all been cut.

You do know Williams had 8 drops last year right? But he had 3 in one game so if you don't count that the other 5 spread out over 11 games doesn't look so bad.

That’s true, but I don’t think it was by design. Meaning, I think this pick was a BPA. This guy is a freak, at 6’4 222 at 4.45 speed, who was a past QB and ran over 330 yards last year as a WR can be someone who is really special. Someone similar to a much larger Deebo. Can be used all over the field, including the X position and be a mismatch.

This has to be one of the more diverse WR group in the NFL right now. Adding our TE and RB’s this is going to be a very, very difficult team to defend.

"That’s true, but I don’t think it was by design."

Gute said in his presser that they didn't plan to go WR twice in the first three rounds, but felt that they--across the war room--had enough regard for Williams that they couldn't let him go by.

Bottom line is that when you're running with youth, you need to keep feeding in youth. It's a churn-based roster-building plan.

"This has to be one of the more diverse WR group in the NFL right now. "

At this stage, you're probably right. The kinds of picks I was pulling for--Royals and Horton--were productive college WR, but really didn't change up the look of the WR room. That might be why these two picks stand out as they do. Let's hope diversity in this case means impact.

"Adding our TE and RB’s this is going to be a very, very difficult team to defend."

I've been a vocal proponent of using more 2 TE sets this off-season, and maybe while Golden and Williams acclimate and find their roles that might be the case, but if you've got a broadly talented set of skill position guys, I think that protects you against injuries as well. When Watson got hurt, the WR room didn't have the diversity to shift to meet that loss. They might have that now.

LOL!

I have been pushing Savion several times now leading up to the draft hoping the Packers select him. My favorite player! Many of you (LOL) have down voted my comments about Savion.

This guy is a PLAYER and is going to have a huge impact on offense with everything they can do with him. Better than Deebo! Matt LeFleur is going to have so much fun lining him up in the backfield, slot, Y, Z, wild cat. Savion will be a fan favorite! Love it!

He’s been WR for all but one year in High School. He’s not a natural hands catcher. He does have more long term upside than Thornton though he’s not as fast or effective as a pure vertical threat. Nevertheless he can run go type routes and he will stretch the field band block aggressively.

All he has to do this year is be MVS as a rookie and split the X role with Wicks. If he ever does master his hands, then he could be the receiver Cordarelle never was. This pick pretty much kills the fiction that Golden projects as a regular X in the pros.

In turn, taking Golden in the first when we could have traded back and got both of these and better and Royals suggests they may not be confident Doubs can get through the season or even to it. Golden needs to add muscle, but he’s also one of the most ready to play WRs in this draft in terms of route tree and technique.

It will be Banned. Chris Jones is not in a good mood. A bogus scheme which violates existing Rules of the Game of assisting the runnner. They want Fullbacks banned because they hit too hard, but go for this bullshit;
The Cheater's philosophy which permeates the social fabric. Farmer is a penetrating guy, whom Hafley needs to run his version of 4-3. He has the reach with 35"-0 arms and a 5.10 40 time to get home fast. Yahya Black for the Plugger. Why did he select Wooden in the '23 draft?

Could be an exciting season. I suspect we'll draft or pickup another OL. Now we need DL and CB restocked.

Have you ever seen that movie where Jackie Chan uses a step ladder as a weapon? Williams is the ladder. A smart coach will know how to use him.

You were down on taking a pass rushing DE claiming they would only get on the field half the time for pass plays and half of those would unstoppable quick hitters, so why bother.

How many plays/game is Williams going to get? 3 -5?

"Packers wide receiver coach Ryan Mahaffey has a challenge on his hands..." He sure does as half the WRs have a challenge WITH their hands.

Many of the commentators out there are now saying, "contenders aren't drafting for the immediate," and going back to the old, "you really need 3 years to judge a draft class," aphorisms. They weren't saying that after the Golden pick--someone who has an immediate role and path to snaps--which tells us something about what they think of Belton and Williams.

I'm thinking we see a shift to defensive needs today. They should be able to find a tree-stump DT to play run downs. I think they'll find a couple developmental CBs. In a draft that seems historically weak at C, I think they'll bolster the OL from here on through UDFAs.

I'm expecting the Packers to court a couple FAs after the draft and into June to fill out holes in the depth chart, yet. Maybe even signing a true plugger MLB.

Hello Cordarrelle Patterson--that's the often-used comp, so that's the hope. Apparently he can pass, too.

A most intriguing addition, and if that talent can be harnessed and he can dispel the notion of his poor hands, he could be a special player.

I think there is a strong possibility Williams is more than a special-teamer and gadgetry specialist over "the next few years." For a third-round pick, the Packers have do be confident he can do more.

He's got exciting upside, but he's also considered to be a bit of a project at this level.
Inconsistent hands and iffy route running, but it's really hard not to fall in love with the highlight reel.

For a run-first offense to have a big-bodied WR with Savion's multi-dimensional skill set is.. exciting.

Would have really, really liked to have seen a CB before day three, but I'm happy to see where these three young men's careers go in GB.

Oppy,
Every single NFC North team is absolutely loaded offensively with a lot of firepower. The Packers are going to be able to slug it out with all of them. The FA OL from 49's, our 2nd round pick. Lloyd returning, and now Savion tells me the Packers are going to be playing more smash mouth football with Jacob, and Kraft.

After Jaire, the packers CB room is filled with placeholders, not playmakers.
I have hopes that Valentine continues to develop. Maybe Kalen King takes a step and develops into a gameday active player.

We've been getting by with our CBs while Jaire is sidelined, but this room is not adequate to build a future on without Jaire.

Don't forget Reed and Doubs on the hands drills.

Reed's drop percentage was nearly identical to Wicks.. I mean, their targets, catches, and drops were as close to identical as you could ask for without actually being identical. They were both horrendous in 2025 in terms of drops. They were among the worst of the worst in the league.

Doubs dropped way to many as well- top 20 in the league.

I believe they can all improve- just don't have blinders and believe it's only wicks. It's Wicks, Reed, and Doubs.

Jet sweep and go routes and blocking. I’d have taken Thornton as the deep threat X, but Williams can do that too, if without the elite speed. Williams is athletically capable of being a great deal more versatile in future if he can learn a broader route tree and if he can learn to catch. Big ifs, but he can help now as a go route type X and blocker to split the role with Wicks. I just hope we get him focused on getting better at that not trying master everything,

I am absolutely giddy tonight over this selection. I too had the Packers drafting two WR's in the draft but there absolutely was NEVER a time I did NOT draft Savion in the 3rd round of my mocks. I just could not bring myself to NOT draft him.

The Packers offense with health has major opportunitiy to be special in 2025. They are going to be so much fun.

I am also extremely interested in how Musgrave will be used. Obviously, up to this point he has been a dissapointment with injuries. Can MLF use him where they can maximize his talent?

Probably my biggest "crush" in this draft year! He also was the BPA.
I'm not worried about his hands AT ALL. He made tons of very difficult catches.
He's going to be the most exciting YAC guy on this team! With Kraft and Jacobs, we're going to be treated to some fantastic YAC this year!

The offense is now officially "loaded." I imagine we'll be seeing a lot of defensive picks tomorrow. Our defense has someone solid at every starting position, so all we're looking at is rotational guys, backups, and developmental guys. That lets Gutey pick the BPAs, which is great!

I am getting the feeling Gutey knows he is going to be a real GM when Ed is allowing him to make all the Football team operation "Policy"...aka Wolf and Thompson.

So he is clearly loading up on the Offense to see if LaFleur can "urgently" coach the rookies and Vets to exceed expectations.

Could be a year of "no excuses".

Hafley will, with continued success to make the D into dominant bunch, again be in demand for a HC gig. Might the gig be at 1265 if the O again fizzles in the North and the Playoffs?

Surely we can’t come out of this draft of all drafts without a 3 technique as well as a true run plugger can we?

The best Edges are gone, but we could take a high upside project like Elijah Ponder late and just use him as a Designated speed rush option early on.

I think what's being signaled is that Hafley is going to need to scheme pressure. Cooper and Quay will need to be active in rush. They're going to need to lean into guys like Wyatt and Brooks on the interior, and get as much as possible out of their DE room. There's a lot of capital invested in that front 7. At some point you need to take care of other things and ask that capital to mature.

It may be scheme pressure again this year. The goal to have a fearsome foursome to create the pressure will probably not happen unless Covington can get Van Ness coached up & resurrect Kenny.

Expect Gary will have a better year...and Wyatt to turn it up a notch.

He saw that Watson is unlikely to play and even if he does, to be himself. That’s just the odds with that injury and timing., I think what we may be seeing is evidence that they really are not confident Doubs will play through the year or necessarily make it to it. I hope not, it would be a great shame for him if the concussions kill his career. He’s a pretty determined, football guy.

I like this pick a lot; the floor is Cordell Patterson, the ceiling is Deebo Samuel. Going into the draft, we had good receivers but not dynamic athletes. Now, with Golden and Williams, we have guys that can hit a crease and go to the house. Doubs, Wicks, and Reed are excellent possession receivers, but don't scare anyone like these two might. Gute is right in looking to upgrade the athleticism of the offense because we were far behind Detroit in dynamic playmakers. Now maybe we've caught up.

Can't deny that he's a guy who really diversifies what the Packers have in their skill position players. I give Gute some credit for taking the plunge. Remember how long it took Patterson to become what he is...he didn't become the diverse and effective offensive weapon we're seeing now until he was about 30 and teams leaned into him as a RB.

I'm uneasy on this pick--Williams needs a lot of development and needs creative play-calling to get him chances on the field. At first, they're going to need to build a package of plays to get him those chances and allow him to grow into a role. I think that means a lot of bubble screens early...that also means easier prep for defenses.

Maybe I'm wrong: maybe they'll throw him out there in regular rotation and he'll flash right away. Maybe he can run the downfield routes and block in a way that allows the Packers--along with Golden--to back off safeties and open up the underneath game and take some pressure off the run game.

People are calling for immediate help and impact while also questioning the chops of the coaching staff...I have a feeling that we'll be 2-3 years in on this guy and wondering when he's going to be a consistent playmaker. Feels like a real luxury pick.

The floor is a hell of a lot lower than Corderrelle. He was a 1st round pick and a better athlete than Williams. He also was a great kick returner which Williams hasn't done since 2020.

Thornton was a lot better option for this role. Gute clearly fell in love with an athlete. I wonder if it was his first crush or the Lions beat him to that?

Developmental wideout who offers an alluring blend of physical gifts and untapped potential. Williams is big, strong and fast but very raw as a route-runner and is unreliable with his hands.

A WR with unreliable hands? If we can't fix the drops the current WRs have, how will this guy get better? While we all are supposed to blindly hype the picks, this could also be another Ty Montgomery or Amary Rogers too. And it comes at the expense of not helping out the DL/DE/CB issues. 'Raw' and 'untapped' -- hints of 'potential over production' - Gute's draft Achilles heel - rearing it's head again?

This guy would be - what - 8th WR in the room? And we'll likely keep 6? As a 3rd rounder, he is kept on the roster...which means one of our experienced guys gets cut. I don't see that as the same roster improvement as drafting someone on the DL/DE/CB would bring.

If some are right...that Ja is gone...our CB room would be woefully thin. Imagine an injury to one of our CBs...(please refer to 2016 playoff loss to Atlanta Falcons 44-21 and what we had for DBs if you don't want to 'imagine')

My take: there were better BPA options that actually addressed an area of need.

Watson will start the season on IR so no worries til he returns. Then Melton or Hardman might get the ax depending on who the backup returners are. If I was Melton I'd find myself a punter and be catching 25 punts a day.

I just watched a video of all his touches in 2024. He's really impressive--big and strong and fast and elusive. He breaks tackles. He's not your usual gadget player. Hard to say if he can be a full-time WR in the NFL right out of the gate. The drops are discouraging.

I would've preferred a more "regular" WR with such a high pick. I'm not confident that Matt LaFleur will get the most out of this guy. I remember the Josiah Deguara experiment, which went nowhere fast, although maybe just because Deguara wasn't very good. Deguara was an H-back and not like Williams at all. The comparison is that LaFleur was going to use him to make the offense more varied, and it never really got off the ground.

I also remember LaFleur using Tyler Ervin as a gadget player, which was a nice little wrinkle, but it never became a big part of the offense. Williams has way more potential than Ervin ever did. I just worry that Williams is going to be Matt LaFleur's cool new toy that he gets for Christmas and stops playing with after a few days.

It will be tons of fun if this works out though. The offense got stagnant at times last year, especially toward the end of the season. With Matthew Golden and Savion Williams on the team, there will be less chance of that happening. The new offensive lineman should add a jolt of energy as well.

Every year, we go into the draft thinking, "How are they going to fix the defense?" I thought that narrative was overstated this year, because the defense was actually very good in 2024. But I didn't see them taking offensive players with the first three picks. This is a real statement from the GM.

I agree. The defense wasn't the '85 Bears last year, but good enough to win with. And I suspect, it would have been even better if allowed to play with a lead more often.

So we get the WR with perhaps the best hands in the draft in round 1 and follow that up by getting the WR with perhaps the worst hands in the draft in round 3. I mean, if he ever learns to catch the ball consistently and run routes, he'll be an absolute stud, but the 3rd round seems a bit rich for a guy who is that much of a project.

Williams is more than just a gadget guy...he's a shape shifter too.

This article lists him at 6"3", NFL.com has him at 6'4", Draft Buzz at 6"5".

By the time I am done reviewing him today, he might be 6'10"! Talk about high pointing the ball.

I'm not convinced that some of the WR issues were not related to coaching. Let's hope someone knows how to operate these Ferraris. LaFleur? McHaffney?

I love all the picks thus far. I also hate to second guess Gute. However, critically speaking they could have done a lot better in the second round. I am not sure how their board ranked all the players. I know that in the second round they could have chosen either Mike Green Edge, or Trey Amos CB.

Both arguably were considered first round picks with Mike Green near the top of the list as being a devastating pass rusher. He dropped because of legal issues which at this point shouldn't matter. Every pick is a risk. If he stays out of trouble he is pro bowl material. The Ravens gladly added him to their already great defense. The great teams draft well. just sayin.

These selections reminded me that the Packers want to match the other teams in the division. They learned a lesson after getting little from their wideouts in the losses to the Lions, Vikings and Bears(add in Philly). Each team has at least two hard to cover receivers. The Packers receivers largely played small(or hurt) last season.
Now there's a speed burner and a large body to challenge the other team's corners, ala Jefferson and Addison at Minnesota.
I hope there's a d-tackle in the next selections, maybe an edge rusher and a corner. I think we'll see more defense on Saturday. But if Shadeur Sanders can go undrafted for three rounds, anything can happen.

Golden is a dog, this guy is a horse, so they now have a dog and pony show, great. I hope it doesn't work out that way. I don't think Golden "fell" to the Packers, He probably went a bit earlier actually, but they got what they think is a #1 WR, so that's fine. Amari Rodgers was a "dog on the field" too. Turns out they should've used him that way and let him catch frisbees in his mouth at halftime.

For what has been repeatedly referred to as a WR room LOADED with talent, then getting one early should've been enough. I still think Reed is the real deal, the others regressed, maybe they all take that step back. But with Kraft and Musgrave (if MLF knows what he's doing) they should be effective,

They can't pressure the QB. Everyone sees it. Maybe Van Ness lives up to his abilities. They would've been better off, even if a bit of a reach, taking an edge with this pick rather than another WR in their top three picks.

Given the Packers' success in drafting OL in the 4th round or later, I'm disappointed they passed on so many good CBs and DLs to select Bolton. However, I do like the Savion Williams pick, so if they wait to take Bolton in the 3rd, you probably won't get Savion. So maybe Gute knew what he was doing. A trade down appears to have been the best option, and I'm guessing Gute tried but couldn't find a suitable partner. In the first three rounds, we secured a top 3 WR (possibly the top one), a giant OL, and a potential Deebo Samuel clone, albeit larger. I'd say that's not bad.
