NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

From Lance Zierlien of NFL.com: Durable fifth-year senior who has made 47 consecutive starts. Burton is built to play center but could offer swing potential at guard. He has adequate play strength and good quickness for a zone-blocking scheme. He gets beaten to first contact by length and will struggle to put up a sustained fight against two-gappers at the point. He can slow a bull rush but needs to do a better job of protecting his edges and operating with consistent posture. Burton’s best fit will be with a zone-heavy running game as a late draft pick or undrafted free agent signee.

From PFF: Jager Burton is an center for the Kentucky Wildcats who earned a 71.3 overall PFF grade in the 2025 season, 44th among 307 qualified centers. He played 819 offensive snaps on the season. His PFF pass-blocking grade of 79.5 ranked 59th among 307 qualified centers. His run-blocking grade of 67.5 ranked 56th at the position. He allowed 12 total pressures in pass protection. That total included 0 sacks and 0 hits allowed to opposing pass rushers. He was flagged for 2 penalties over the course of the season.

From PFSN: The questions with Burton stem from his ultimate upside in contact situations. He's not overly powerful, and his leverage game needs work. He struggles to acquire leverage consistently and can align upright too quickly off the snap, which erodes his center of gravity and makes him easier to wrench upright and displace. That same upright drift affects his engagement balance and coordination in space, and hamstrings the authority of what already isn't a domineering size profile. If Burton can be more consistent with his leveraging, he has quality starter upside in zone-heavy schemes.

From Dane Brugler: Burton needs to continue developing his sustain skills and the mental aspects of the position, but he is a quick-win blocker with positional flexibility across the interior. He offers intruiging value for zone based schemes on day three.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

From the 2026 Packer Report Draft Guide: Burton is exactly the kind of athelete and player the Packers covet. He is a perfect fit for what Green Bay likes and is a potential lottery ticket for the Packers at the Center position. The Sean Rhyan extension slows down their search for a starting center, but Burton could be a better version of what the Packers tried with Jacob Monk.

CAREER NOTES:

Jager Burton from Frederick Douglass High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Burton opted to join Kentucky. In 2021 as a freshman Burton saw action in just 3 games and played a total of 34 snaps for the Wildcats. He allowed no QB hurries, no QB hits, and one sack while playing at right guard. As a sophomore in 2022 he played in 12 games and a total of 729 snaps. He conceded 4 QB hurries, 4 QB hits, and 5 sacks while playing at left guard. In 2023 as a junior Burton saw action in 11 games and totaled 590 snaps. He gave up 9 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and one sack while playing the majority of his snaps at right guard, and the rest at center.

COMMENTARY:

Burton is a classic Packers type: versatile, athletic and raw. He could be the latest in a long line of Packers mid-round linemen who go on to have long, succesful careers, or he could go the way of Jacob Monk. The jury is out, but his athletic profile and lateral quickness give him a fighters chance.

Demmings just went to the queens. They took Bredeson to be a fullback/HB and replace C.J. Ham, one of my favorite NFL players. I would look for Andre Fuller in Rd seven as a CB/S.

Wow JJ, 4 of my favorites gone in 7 picks Demmings, Kozoil, Singleton, & Royer-TE.

We are having a decent draft, no matter what stockholder and Houndog say. There really hasn't been a bad pick yet. Keep your fingers crossed. Jeff Caldwell & Diego Pounds.

Andre Fuller would be a great later pickup. North Carolina has a good later CB too. I think Gb will bring in about 5 UFDAs and probably sign 1 more vet CB.

Sadly I think that the 4th really bad pick since Cisse. He’s a high upside guy definitely, but his strength is a CB problem and his technique is deficient in several ways. Maybe in the 7th as a high upside flyer, but this could really be the worst pick in that round by anyone. Lots of talent off the board.

This is shaping up to be the worst draft since Sherman and suggestive said a similar level of disconnect with reality. It is probably my time to jump off the Gute bandwagon for good.

This might blow your mind, but if you're already sure you'd take a player, what would be the benefit of bringing them in for a visit?

You bring in players to learn more about them. Sometimes, you bring in a player and by the time they leave, you realize they aren't what you were expecting. That can be good or bad.

I guess what I'm trying to say is bringing a player in doesn't mean you're locked into taking that player. That's silly.

50/50 on projections Murf?
**********
I've checked Kipers final mock drafts against the actual draft numerous times in the past.
He usually gets like 4-7 picks right in the first round.
Most of them at the beginning of the first round.
Like most of the other Mock draft experts

I can't list all of Kipers blowhard player proclamations, because i want to get to sleep before the sun comes up.

Examples....
Matt Hasslebeck was a wasted draft pick.
Endorsed Ryan Leaf
Thought Johnny clipboard was the next Fran Tarkenton.
Loved Joey Harrington, Trubisky, David Carr.
JaMarcus Russel could be the next John Elway.
Said Detroit should pick Brady Quinn. The Lions took Calvin Johnson instead.
Said Jimmy Clauson was a top 5 QB. Doubled down and said "If Jimmy Clauson isn't a successful NFL QB, i'm done, i'm out. (So not only is Kiper a blowhard, he is also a proven liar.)
Thought the Patriots trade for Wes Welker was foolish. Welker = 5 Pro Bowls, 2x All Pro
Didn't even have Jared Allen on his draft board, thought he was too much of a project. Led NFL in sacks 2 seasons, 5x Pro Bowl, 4x All Pro

Yawn...you get the idea.

Nothing wrong with making a career out of it, kudos.
But...he talks loud and arrogant like he's an authority.

Which explains why most NFL team brass don't like him.

To me, he's the equivalent of a WWE wrestler with a microphone.

I'm not sold on Rhyan either, but he might have played his best ball thus far towards the end of last season. I'm not all-in on Burton either, but at least we have another option (although its also another "project", with decent stats) that can hopefully be at least some form of back-up this season. Decent depth, at bare minimum, would be nice.

Another solid pickup and he is a favorite of Aaron Nagler. Now we can get rid of Monk because this guy plays OG & OC.

I am bummed because the 49ers grabbed the "sleeper" LB I wanted badly, Jaden Dugger. Damn they screwed us out of Fred Warner too. Oh well, no LB this year.

I am ok with selecting Burton, but was hoping for Dallon Bentley-TE. Wish we had #160 back now.

Thanks, Greg, for not randomly capitalizing the entire word EDGE for absolutely no reason like all of these other morons in the football space do.

That being said, you just claimed that a Edge player is an entirely different position than an off-the-ball linebacker. In a 3-4 - which is what the Packers are likely going to utilize as their base front- I'd like to understand what you find to be the difference to be between a "edge" and an OLB?

April 25, 2026 at 03:46 pm

"Off-ball-linebacker" is a term that is used interchangeably with "inside linebacker" in a 3-4 defense, sometimes abbreviated as ILB. This is in contrast to the "outside linebacker" (OLB) position. The ILBs line up near the middle of the field, a few yards behind the line of scrimmage (hence the term "off-ball"), and mainly play coverage on passing plays, while the OLBs line up on the sides, closer to the line of scrimmage, and mainly rush the passer on passing plays. Different body types are used for these positions, with the OLBs generally being taller and heavier than the ILBs.

"Edge" is a term that is used to describe players who are either OLBs in a 3-4 defense or defensive ends (DEs) in a 4-3 defense. It's a handy term because players often switch from one type of defense to the other when they move from college to the NFL. OLB and DE are similar positions, while ILB (or just plain "linebacker" or "LB" in a 4-3 defense) are different.

Of course you are 100% correct, and I can not defend my statement except that it is the result of an age-induced brain fart- I know what off the ball LB is; but for whatever reason, I had it stuck in my head you were talking about OLB's playing on the line of scrimmage.

I sincerely apologize for being a pain in the ass.

Okay, thanks for the explanation, Oppy. I figured it must be a misunderstanding, but I wasn't quite sure. As for the EDGE thing, I think people should consistently use the term "edge defender" and abbreviate it as ED. Maybe that will happen eventually, though there is the risk of it getting mixed up with erectile dysfunction.

OLB is often short for Outside linebacker which line up on the line of scrimmage as an Edge in a 3-4. Offball linebackers are off of the line of the scrimmage. In a 3-4 that is the middle 2.

C'mon, Greg,
Maybe I'm just too old, but not that long ago when the Packers or any other team played a 3-4, there were 'Inside' and 'Outside' Linebackers. The "Edge" moniker is what, maybe 10 years old, the position(s) are the same!
Defensive Ends, like Aaron Kampman and and Bryce Paup I guess, are extinct?

This is it, Houndog.. "Edge defender" is just a term one of the sports news network analysts came up with as a general label that lumps together players with similar skillsets and responsibilities and bridges the gap between many pass rushing 4-3 DE's and the 3-4 OLB's.

Furthermore, whoever that idiot was, they thought they needed to capitalize "EDGE" because all the other positions are capitalized- not realizing the reason the other positions are capitalized is because they're abbreviations for compound word positions. QuarterBack, CornerBack, Offensive Lineman, Defensive Tackle, etc etc etc.

I don't know this prospect. Others noted that he had a good game against Georgia. I just googled him - he has been in the 180 to 200 area. Zone guy, not a people mover. OG Billy Schrauth went 160. Schrauth allegedly has no upside and is more of a mauler. Burton has more upside. It depends on what you want. Based on that limited information, I prefer Burton.

OC Connor Lew went 128th.
OG Jeremiah Wright went 132nd.
OG Fernando Carmona went 142nd.
OC Sam Hecht went 144th.
OG Beau Stevens went with the 148th pick to Seattle.
OG Billy Schrauth went 160th.

After Connor Lew was taken, I don't have strong feelings on these players.

@TGR, I don't watch much college ball but the guys at PFF grade every play and they had him ranked as their 141st best prospect.

Also, fwiw his RAS was 9.88

So at this spot in the 5th round he seems like he was picked at a reasonable price.

But I just looked through The Athletic' The Beast and Dane Brugler had him ranked 252!! Yikes.
So somewhere between 141 and 252 according to those two independent sources.

I am fine with Burton. I don't subscribe but I am happy to hear PFF likes Burton. Remember PFF does not adjust for quality of opponent. Kentucky plays Toledo and Eastern Michigan but also 8 SEC games. That is why I mentioned that commentators said he looked good against Georgia.

I listed all those players to show that IOL were flying off the shelves in round 5. There was a run on OL, with only 1 more OL being selected (Enrique Cruz with the 179th pick) in the 5th round. 6 OL between 127 and 153, and 7 between 127 and 160.

9 in round one.
3 in round two.
7 in round three.
9 in round four.
5 between 141 and 153 - flying off the shelf!
7 in round five (just 2 between 154 and 181).

I don't know where Crownover will end up going, but he is a TE who converted to LT. RAS is excellent and he is huge with 35 and 3/8th inch long arms. Zurlein had him in the 4th. TE Bentley would be fun.

He played center all last year but played left guard and right guard before that, so he should be versatile. I expect him to compete directly with Jacob Monk for a roster spot. I thought they needed an interior OL backup more than a tackle, so this seems like a good fit. Gute has drafted exactly to need so far.

I was hoping for OT & OG in this draft Greg. Gutey is slipping a little bit, he is usually very good grabbing extra picks in the draft. Last year too, none. We are going to have to accept filling fewer needs in this draft with no extra picks and losing 1 in the trade up. Maybe a WR late, maybe Van Den Berg. Bring in a lot of UFDAs @ PON, and then a couple more FAs.

Monk could be on his way out, he hasn't progressed at all. Banks could be another, and if Rhyan has a good year, Burton could be our new LG. Win win either way.

I would not mind at all if we got Diego Pounds at #201. The OL depth would be restored.

Top Packer needs were CB, DL, Edge, and IOL. Amazing how this has gone.

Now toss some love to Love and LaFleur and get a WR, a RB...and another CB.

Here it is, BINGO!!....

"It's an opportunity to get better" - 61
"OPPORTUNITY
********
All the talk in here means nothing, until these players play in real NFL games, over a period of time.

Each of these articles i've read mention the player picked was a 4 star recruit out of high school...lmfao.
How the F does that have anything to do with making it in the NFL?
That means about as much in the NFL as a players college PFF grade....nothing.
Or the Expert draft grades that come out in 2-4 days....lol.
The NFL is a different animal than High School, or College.
Sorry, a lot of this is comical, and off season filler. I understand

You love football, the Packers, i get it, and respect that.
Have that passion, as i do, i love it.
But you gotta keep it 💯

Look back at all the draft talk from the 2018 - 2021 seasons.
How does that look now?
2 players on the roster from that period.

Or when receivers were drafted during Guters tenure.
How many people claimed #1 receivers were drafted?
I haven't seen one true #1 wr drafted.....in 8 drafts.

It HAS to be done on an NFL field, that is where everything is 'proven'....or it means nothing.
TALK IS CHEAP, UNLESS YOU CAN BACK IT UP....ON THE FIELD.

See..."It's time to win Championships"

Reality....It's time to lose to the Bears in the wild card round.

If the articles ONLY said that he was a 4-star recruit out of high school, that would be a problem. But if it is mentioned as part of his story, that's fine. Most people like to hear stories from the beginning. And it's easy to skim over the less interesting parts if you don't want to spend the time to read the whole thing. I really don't see the harm in any of this.

Never said there was any harm in any of it.

Just stated some facts, that's all i did.
If anyone thinks my facts were/are wrong, cool, then lets hear why.

Sorry if i hurt peoples feelings, which i obviously did, but maybe people should just put their big boy pants on. 🤷‍♂️

I speak my truth (that will never change). I'm not just going to start drinking kool aid and put on a skirt, to appease the forum readers.

It's a football forum based on opinions, that's what i express, this isn't life or death.
I would hope.

Apparently, he's upset with all the downvotes he's been getting lately. I'm sure he'll get over it.
I'm not a big fan of mock drafts, but I have to hand it you, you kind of nailed it with a number of your picks. Good job!

You're the one whining about down votes. Personally, I don't pay attention to them one way or the other. Just saying, it's a weird thing to get hung up on.

Starting to thin out. Do the Packers stay with their RAS tendencies. Probably. To that point a couple to look for.

CB:
Domani Jackson 9.01
Latrell McCutchin 9.49

OG:
Josh Gesky (top 30 visit) 9.62

Edge:
Michael Heldman (top 30 visit) 9.90

DT:
Jordan Van Den Berg (top 30 visit) 9.99

The scariest thing is that Jimmy Haslam, now owns part of the Bucks.

Which might help to explain the reason for the Giannis Antetokounmpo
relationship downslide.

Did Nadame Tucker-Edge-W Michigan get drafted? He was tied for most sacks in college last year.

Xzavian Harris's legal issues kept him from being picked too.

One of my favorite OT/OGs, Diego Pounds also hasn't been picked. Priority UFDA for sure.
