Packers Practice Roundup: Day Ten

After Family Night and an indoor practice on Monday (days eight and nine), the Packers practice in full pads today.

GENERAL/PERSONNEL:

LaFleur says Aaron Rodgers will most likely not play in the preseason.  Schneidman

Kevin King is out on Nitschke Field with the rehab group. Getting closer to returning.  Nagler

Packers’ injury list is CB Stanford Samuels is out and OLB Rashan Gary is back after a 1-day absence.  Silverstein

Redmond, King, and Blair getting some work in on the side. Hopefully all three can return soon.  Herman  [Redmond catching passes and tiptoeing down the sideline.  Looked pretty healthy to me.]

One tick under 2 hours for this one. 1:59 in full pads in hot/humid conditions.  Demovsky

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

Jordan Love’s 2-minute drill stalls at the 5-yard line. He hit DeAndre Thompkins for 31-yards pass over Ka’dar Hollman to spark the drive, but overthrew Malik Turner out back off end zone on fourth and goal. Love was 3-7 for 57 yards on the drive.  Wood

He’s just wildly inconsistent right now. When he plays in rhythm, he looks great. When things break down, which happens a lot in the NFL, he gets way too sloppy. But he’s progressing.  Nagler

Love to Sternberger over the middle for a big pickup in 2 minute. Nice throw from Love.  2) Love with a gorgeous pump and go to Thompkins for a big play!  Herman

Davante Adams vs. Jaire Alexander in red zone 1-on-1s. Good coverage, even better fade to the back right corner for a TD caught by Adams on the run. You thought it came from Aaron Rodgers? Nope. Kurt Benkert.  Schneidman

Lazard uncovers from Stokes and picks up a really nice gain. Great find from Rodgers.  Herman

Aaron Rodgers flushes pocket right, carries all the way to sideline, buys enough time to find Davante Adams wide open for about 20 yards. Later, he fires a ball from pocket to Robert Tonyan for a TD.  He’s loudly having a strong camp.  Wood

Amari Rodgers play of the day for sure. Awesome separation from Savage and an absolute incredible diving catch. WOW play!!!  Herman

Devin Funchess spikes the ball and rips off his helmet in celebration in front of the crowd after catching a TD in red zone 1-on-1s against Josh Jackson.  Schneidman

Randall Cobb took time to play a little catch with a developmentally disabled child in the stands followed by a high five.  TGR

TIGHT ENDS:

Rodgers carries out an INcredible play fake, finds Big Dog on the backside and Elgton Jenkins is right there to lead the way. Big man was running and LOOKING for someone to hit….  Nagler

Deguara working at H back with the ones again.  Hodkiewicz

Rodgers goes deeeeeeeeeep to Tonyan for a big gain. Safety was just a step late in knocking it down.  Nagler

Aaron Rodgers, rolling right, just dropped a beauty to Robert Tonyan in double coverage 40 yards downfield, beating Darnell Savage Jr. and Jaire Alexander. Terrific adjustment to the ball from Tonyan. That sure looks like a big-time connection coming this fall.  Wood

RUNNING BACKS:

Really strong day from Patrick Taylor today. He’s doing his best to make up for lost time.   Herman

Really nice grab by Dillon up the right sideline with Barnes in tight coverage during one on ones.  Nagler

If today’s reps are any indication: the running back depth chart is currently: 1. Jones (out today); 2. Dillon; 3. Kylin Kylin seeing the bulk of the #2 reps today and even getting some snaps with the ones.  Herman  [Based on reps - all of the RBs have had good camps so far.]

A truly impressive cut by Patrick Taylor who is such a unique plant of burst and power. I’m super excited to watch him in the preseason.  Herman

Nice run by Kylin Hill. And then another one. Packers found a gem in Kylin Hill. His vision is [100%] and his cuts are $$$.  Herman  [Maybe GB keeps 4 RBs.]

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Elgton Jenkins is unbeatable in one-on-one drills. He takes care of Preston Smith twice, burying him on the second rep. Sure looks like left tackle is in capable hands until David Bakhtiari returns.  Wood

Ben Braden is at LG with the ones to start team period.  Nagler

Defense runs a game against Jenkins and Braden, Braden picks it up and Rodgers hits Cobb.  Herman

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Packers currently with a 4-man defensive line. Interesting. Lowry, Slaton, Heflin, Lancaster. Wasn’t a goal line or run stopping situation.  Herman

Even at 330 pounds, Packers rookie defensive tackle T.J Slaton showing explosiveness.  Silverstein

TJ Slaton with a tip at the line of scrimmage. Should be something we see from him with his size.  Herman

With Clark out, Slaton’s running with the ones at NT.  Nagler

Jack Heflin gets an early look with the ones on defense.  Herman

LINEBACKERS:

Tipa out there with the ones during 2 minute.  2)  Really nice quickness on the outside rush by newcomer Chauncey Rivers with the twos.  Nagler

Chauncey Rivers with a really nice pass rush against Dennis Kelly. Got around him with speed to the outside.  Herman

This is two days in a row Garvin has gotten through on an inside rush with the ones. Think he got tripped or he would have come clean at Rodgers.  Nagler

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

Shemar Jean-Charles said he played mostly boundary corner in college. He focused on showing he could play slot in college showcase games before the draft. "It's a different ball game playing on the inside." He says WRs having "2-way goes" in the middle of the field is something he's needed to adjust to, and he sees "shiftier" receivers. But he has enjoyed the move inside. It's been fun.""Making that transition up here, it's been smooth."  Wood

Chandon Sullivan on why the "star" slot CB position in Joe Barry's defense is a good fit for him: "It allows me to show my versatility. I can play zone, play man, blitz a little bit."  Wood

Cobb over Chandon in one on ones. Nice grab by Cobb. Solid coverage.  Herman

Phenomenal play by Christian Uphoff with a diving pass breakup. Love was looking to find Amari.  2) Henry Black with an INT.  3) Savage with great coverage on Sternberger.  4) Taylor beats Ento.  5) Nauta beats Vernon Scott.  6) Amari beats Henry Black who has really struggled in coverage during camp.  Herman

Kabion Ento on his past as WR: “I feel like a DB.”  Demovsky  [I can’t argue with that: I watched him drop a few INT opportunities today in drills.]

Innis Gaines int in one on ones. The best udfa at camp so far IMO.  2) Just made another diving pass breakup in one on ones. Herman

Adrian Amos has been everywhere today. Good coverage on Davante Adams in the flat earlier. Then he covers a deep ball from Aaron Rodgers to Josiah Deguara. Amos jumps it in the left seam, almost makes the pick, settles for PBU.  Wood

What a play by Adrian Amos who ranges over from CF to almost pick off a Rodgers throw on a wheel route to Deguara. Amos should have picked it but it bounces off his hands. A bit too much air from 12.  Herman [Same Play as above by Wood.]

All of the RBs have looked very good. I chose to use a photo of Hill because he had a very good day, but so did Patrick Taylor, and Dexter Williams has had a strong camp to date. There are a lot of moving parts, but GB should consider keeping four RBs. IDK, though: Dexter will probably make it to the PS and it may be that Patrick Taylor would as well.

I found no comments by media observers, so here are mine on special teams, which were conducted on the end of the field where I was watching. Amari Rodgers and Randall Cobb looked very solid fielding punts. Pooch punting looked pretty good. The rest of the punting, whether by Winslow or Scott, seemed very inconsistent in terms of hang time, and not impressive in terms of distance. TGR

Regarding keeping 4 RBs……

We get to suit up 21 guys on offense. Two QBs, 8 Oline, 5 WR……..that leaves us with room for six more: Jones, Dillon, Lewis, Tonyan. That means everybody else is looking at two spots.

Deguara, Daffney, Dexter…….I don’t know. But we’ve only got room for six unless we cut elsewhere, and it doesn’t matter if we call them fullbacks or Hbacks or TEs.

Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

If all the RBs are looking good, that’s probably because there is a hole.

Wrong.

On the active roster you have 25 for offensive side and same (25) on defense + P, LS and K.

So you have six plus 4 - 10 places on offense! You are not looking at game day active, but you have to look at active roster! Game day active players are deciding before every game and it is also influenced by possible injuries!

On the active roster, yes, but you don’t get to dress them all. Gameday is usually the way I laid it out. Once you dress 8 linemen, 2 QBs, and 5 WRs……you’ve only got six spots left for TEs and RBs.

Running backs don't have the long learning curves that some other positions have, that is true. Hill looked very smooth, with good vision and burst. I agreed with Andy Herman's tweet. And he looked completely natural as a pass-catcher. Taylor looked big and rather impressive. I didn't see Dexter Williams too much other than in pass pro when he looked shaky on a rep.

Agreed mostly on the 48 active - 3 for ST leaves 45. 2 QBs, 8 OL, 5 WR, = 15. Tonyan, Marcedes, Deguara, and probably Jones, Dillon and Hill active = 21. I'd guess Dafney as the 22nd with the defense getting 23 active players, but Dafney might well play second fiddle to Deguara and be inactive as long as Deguara is healthy, in which case the last player might be Sternberger or even a surprise like Nauta or Kaufusi. Probably depends on the opponents some and injuries a lot.

"Redmond catching passes and tiptoeing down the sideline. "

I can think of one I wish he'd caught in January....

I should have asked for advice from you guys out there on attending practice. Yesterday was a first for me. So, I will just explain some nuts and bolts.

I took US 41 to Lombardi Avenue (exit 167) and travelled east 1.5 miles, turning right (south) when I saw all the police cars with lights a half block down. Parked for free. I had been advised to get there early and sit on the north side of Nitschke field. Yet, I was deceived. I saw a lot of people watching players on bicycles ride to Nitschke field and looked at the stands which seemed only lightly populated. Wrong: a lot of those people watching the bikes had someone saving their seats. Another chunk of the bleachers in the good area was reserved for people who have sponsors. A lot of the open spaces in the bleachers I had seen were really either reserved for media and other sponsored people or being saved.

I was still pretty early, maybe 25 minutes before practice was scheduled to start I went to secure a seat, but I had to sit on the south end - I did manage to sit about as close to mid-field as possible. So I saw a lot of defensive drills and the special teams. Jaire Alexander did drills by himself maybe 15 yards from me. Not sure why. He's backpedaled and then have a coach throw the ball. Jaire would flip his hips to run and catch the "INT" with an exaggerated emphasis on plucking the ball with his hands. His backpedal looked smooth but I later saw some other DBs do similar things. It could be my imagination, but when Jaire turned to run (flipped his hips) it looked so natural, smooth and fast compared to some of the other DBs. There were some offensive linemen across the width of the field doing drills. I can't say I discerned diddly squat from watching them.

It was already 77 degrees when I arrived, circa 9:20 am, so I was traveling light. I thought I could use the stopwatch on my phone, but that didn't go as planned. Lots of milling around during which my phone would no longer be active and then they would snap the ball. I got better at timing the hangtime but I should have brought my stopwatch. Aside from the jersey numbers and names, just from watching Winslow and Scott punt I could not have told you which player was the UDFA and which was the veteran starter. Lots of lousy punts IMO by both players. Lots punts with between 3.9 and 4.2 seconds of hangtime, and a few in the 3.7 range. There were a handful in the 4.5 area but these were not boomed - maybe 40 yards. I didn't see a fifty plus yard boomer at all. Who knows if they were less worried about results than technique, but Winslow at least probably needs a strong and consistent camp to make any move.

The net drill was done right in front of me. Benkert looked the most accurate. The ball really does seem to just jump out of the hands of these professionals.

Team, 2-minute, and all the things that the media tweets occurs on the north end and I was sitting at least 40 yards and more from it The defense did some drills on my end but they were all half speed (really closer to quarter speed). The actual hitting occurred during team and 2-min and the like far away from me. I could see some things but checking the respective lines was nigh on impossible. Argh, and it was full pads! I did sneak up to the north end for a bit later.

It hit 90 degrees on a humid day so some people left well before practice ended.

Hey TGR. I’ve been to many practices over the years, and my intent was always to see as much of the action that I possibly could take in, trying to emphasize to myself the most impactful info on what I was seeing. I did this to relay to other Packer fans on other boards as TC reports.

No notes, but always carried with me a printout of player numbers, and binoculars!

When practice was done, I’d hit Kroll’s for a couple burgers and just start writing down every last bit of info that I could recall, from beginning to end. I was amazed at how much detail I could remember in the drills, etc after writing it all down. Kind of a nice way to go in there. Recall my eyes were freaking out a bit, trying to take in everything that was occurring in multiple position group drills, who affected plays positive/negative on both sides of ball in team sessions, et al.

Never cared where I sat or stood at fence, as long as I could view the whole field clearly. Binoculars a big plus there.

Hope that helps.

The story about Randall Cobb happened not 10 feet from me. There had been a young developmentally disabled child perhaps 7 to 10 years old wandering along the guard rail. In the middle of practice Mr. Cobb ran over and tossed a football to the child. I could hear Mr. Cobb tell the child to throw the ball back, that he (Cobb) had to give it back. So the child threw it back and Cobb caught it with some difficulty. Then he high-fived the child and returned to practice. There are reasons why Cobb is a fan favorite.

Glad I didn't really see that up close and personal when I was advocating for keeping Jordy (move Jordy to the slot but he can still play the boundary as well) and for releasing Cobb! Of course, the FO did the opposite. I imagine there are heartwarming stories about Jordy: he seems like that kind of person as well.

Oh, I'll add that Maurice Drayton is extremely vocal out there. He is really barking out loudly and almost continuously. IDK whether that means anything. Just really obvious.

When considering Matts balance between run/pass and the number or plays he uses 2 RBs, or 2 TEs....at times 2 of each on the same play, I can see the final 53 having 4 RBs, 4 TEs and just 5 WRs.

Tough cuts loom and many of them will be players signed to other teams final 53. I think Gutey, in consult with Matt, has really loaded up the position rooms with so much young talent.

That’s an interesting perspective on our “loaded” rooms of talent.

Less than a year ago, these perspectives were very different.

Love, Dillon, and Deguara were wasted picks. Our only receiving option was Adams. MVS was not an NFL quality WR, and the rest of the unit was garbage.

I thought those critics were really off target then. We were about to put the #1 offense in the league on the field. So I’m happy to see other people who are happy about our talent.
