Packers Practice Roundup - August 9, 2023 (Bengals)
The Packers faced their first pop quiz of the year during today's joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Longest practice by far. They're getting in good work. 2) Bengals offense cannot move the ball against the Packers defense so far. Goodberry [Bengals beat writer TGR]
Matt LaFleur says he hasn't entirely solidified plan for Friday night's preseason snaps, but there's a good chance Jordan Love will play Friday night in opener vs. Bengals. Wood
Bengals veteran CB Mike Hilton on Jordan Love: “Real strong arm. Obviously that’s what he’s been known for, but you can tell … he’s seeing things a little slower and his process is a little faster, so I feel like Green Bay got a good one.” Schneidman
My takeaways along with a few other notes in the article: • Melton WR6 • Patrick Taylor RB3 • Tom starting RT • Rasheed Walker over Caleb Jones • Davis ahead of Kraft • Enagbare edge rusher 5 • Ford starting S • Gaines backup nickel to Nixon • O’Donnell starting punter. Bretl
Session of 11-on-11 between Bengals O and Packers D dominated by Green Bay. Nothing of note outside of one pass to Tyler Boyd up the seam and a nice run by Joe Mixon. Otherwise a struggle to find any space or success in the pass game. Paul Dehner - The Athletic for Bengals
Rookie Jayden Reed took the overwhelming majority of slot snaps even though Toure is listed as the starter at slot. Huber
INJURIES:
An overall healthy roster for the joint practice vs. Bengals. Eric Stokes (NFI), Lew Nichols, Innis Gaines and Jake Hanson only players not practicing. 2) TE Josiah Deguara is dressed for today’s practice. Deguara missed the past week with a calf injury. 3) David Bakhtiari just walked by on his way to the practice field wearing pads. So he appears to be practicing today. 4) Wood
QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:
Jordan Love was 4-7 in 2-minute drill, one incompletion a clock kill. Had Romeo Doubs deep down right side vs. Sidney Jones IV, but Doubs couldn’t bring it in. Not a bad ball. Love hit Samori Toure for first down in deep in route, converting 3rd & 3. Otherwise, lot of checks. 2) Jordan Love drops a 51-yard TD to Romeo Doubs down right sideline on 3rd & 6 against Cam Taylor-Britt. Didn’t miss that deep ball. Let Doubs run under it, and he did the rest. 3) Jordan Love finished 5-8 for roughly 32 yards, 2 TDs and INT in red-zone period. Hit Watson on corner route from 10-yard line on one TD. Threaded a pass to Jayden Reed for 5-yard touchdown on stop route in right seam on other. Lone pick on screen to the left from. 4) Bengals CB Mike Hilton picks a Jordan Love pass from the 3-yard line. The Packers had bunch left on the goal line, and looked like Hilton jumped a screen pass off the jump. Took it the other way. Young QB sold on a route before the snap. [3 and 4 are the same play. TGR] 5) Ten-yard TD pass for Jordan Love in back, right corner end zone to Christian Watson. Watson beat Bengals CB Cam Taylor-Britt to the corner, and Love didn’t miss. 6) Jordan Love opens 3-5 vs Bengals starting defense in first term period. Hit Samori Toure on a slant, pretty fade ball to Henry Pearson down right side, crosser to Christian Watson’s. Missed Romeo Doubs deep and Watson on a corner route. 7) Jordan Love tried to hit Romeo Doubs deep down middle of field. Doubs got behind Bengals secondary, but Love’s pass hung in the air too long. Allowed the safety to close over and break up the pass. 8) Jordan Love had a 17-yard completion to Christian Watson earlier in the period on a crossing route. Looked like there might have been offensive holding behind the play. Wood
Yeah that’s not a throw I’m concerned about for Jordan Love. No way he’s anticipating a defender there after the fake and that play demands the ball comes out fast. That’s an offensive execution error. [On the Pick 6 when GB was on the Bengals' 3-yard line. Herman 2) pretty sure it was a blown block that allowed Hilton to blow up the bubble screen. That's usually not on the QB unless there's a pre-snap look he missed. Palozzolo - PFF
Packers QB Alex McGough with the best pass of the day so far at Packers-Bengals practice. In stride go ball to WR Malik Heath. Palazzolo PFF.
Nice completion from Love to Doubs. Braydon Allen [In drills - TGR]
Red zone. Love goes 4-8. Touchdown to Watson. INT by Mike Hilton who jumped a bubble screen and might have gone 90 plus the other way for a TD. Demovsky
The Romeo Doubs thing is real against other teams as well...in camp Guy's been open consistently. Sam Monson - PFF
Love went 4/8 in red-zone drill. One TD to Watson on crosser, one dropped TD by Jayden Reed on a perfectly thrown stop route with two defenders converging. One INT by Mike Hilton, who jumped bubble screen to Doubs for would-be pick six. 2) In 11 x 11: Love went 3/5 passing in first 11-on-11s against Bengals D. Nice quick slant to Samori Toure for a substantial gain, nice completion to FB Henry Pearson on the right side, another nice gain to Watson on crosser over middle. Last throw was underthrown bomb to Doubs incomplete. Schneidman
By our count, he completed 17-of-29 passes with two touchdowns and one interception. [Watson and definitely Doubs and Reed with drops - TGR] 2) On Hilton's pick 6 at the 3 yard line: “It was a run, and we had a bubble screen on the outside,” Love said. “He just made a really good play. He jumped it. We have to do a better job being able to block the point of attack right there. That can’t happen. It’s one of those plays I probably could’ve handed off right there. They got four guys over three, so I kind of forced it.”Huber
Second year in a row the Bengals D has been suffocating another team's offense during joint scrimmages. Last year it was the Rams. This year Green Bay can barely get a first down. Sam Monson - PFF
Today, a few Bengals veterans thought that their defense had one of its best practices in a while. The question marks all offseason have focused on the Bengals defense and secondary. Today against the Packers, the Bengals made a very loud statement. 2) The Bengals first team defense just had the exact type of practice that Lou Anarumo was probably looking for. The best practice I’ve seen from DJ Reader and Mike Hilton. Big plays across the D-line. Turnovers. No big plays down the field except one deep ball against Turner. Great anticipation by the safeties and mostly completions on check downs or crossers. 3) On the second team, Cam Sample is having a terrific day. Some pressure and a sack from Murphy. Some more big plays against the second team secondary as the Packers second team offense probably won that battle. Lots of catches over the middle where the Packers showed their speed. Charlie Goldsmith Bengals Beat Writer;
TIGHT ENDS:
Love overthrows Luke Musgrave who has DJ Turner (!!) in his hip pocket. Musgrave lining up out wide quite a bit. Palazzolo - PFF
RUNNING BACKS:
Deguara is back but not in team. Henry Pearson makes nice tip toe catch to pull pass in for a big connection from love. Hodkiewicz
OFFENSIVE LINE:
First fight of the joint practice. LG Elgton Jenkins dropped a Bengals LB (Germaine Pratt I think) on his butt on a screen. The LB sat down shaking his head for a bit, then got up, approached Jenkins and took a swing at him. Jenkins lunged at him and it was on. 2) Jenkins at it again. This time he takes a swing at defensive tackle DJ Reader, connecting to the side of the helmet. LaFleur pulls him from the drill. Silverstein
Elgton Jenkins was removed from practice after two fights. 2) RDE Trey Hendrickson is a certified problem. Schneidman
DJ Reader on Elgton Jenkins: "Man, he’s a jag, man. I don’t know that guy. No idea who he is. I mean, I see he made two Pro Bowls, so good for him but he blocked for Aaron Rodgers. That don’t make you nobody." Demovsky [Why do I think Reader knows who Jenkins is? TGR]
Zach Tom, listed as the No. 1 right tackle on the depth chart, took all the first-team reps at right tackle and none at center. 2) An unscripted, move-the-ball period was a disaster. On third-and-2, Jordan Love was sacked by Trey Hendrickson. On third-and-13, he was sacked again by Hendrickson. On third-and-4, Cole Schneider and Sean Clifford botched a shotgun snap. On third-and-10, Clifford was sacked by Josh Tupou. The backup offensive line really had a poor day. During a third-down period, Clifford was sacked twice in four snaps. Huber [It doesn't sound like the starting OL did much in the run game against Cincy's talented DL. TGR
DEFENSIVE LINE:
DJ Reader reacts after getting a smack in the helmet from Elgton Jenkins today. He's a JAG. Wood
Green Bay’s No. 2 defense forced a four-and-out, thanks in large part to Colby Wooden’s sack of Trevor Siemian on second down. Huber
LINEBACKERS:
Another win for OT Jonah Williams vs Preston Smith. (Williams is starting RT - TGR) 2) Van Ness beats RT Carman inside again. (Carman is 3rd string - TGR) 3) Very good. Van Ness is a handful already. Obviously Kenny Clark too. They struggled with both. Bunch of pass breakups. Bengals QBs were bad. Goodberry
SECONDARY:
Carrington Valentine now with two PBUs in red zone. He’s outside corner. Jaire practicing but not in team. 2) Jonathan Owens getting work at personal protector on punts, alternating with Leavitt. Competition within the safety competition. [Now that's a direct threat to Leavitt as STs is his only ticket to the 53. TGR] 3) LaFleur on Cincy's receivers: "Three dudes (Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd) who can start on any offense. ... It’s going to be a great challenge (for the Packers' secondary) and see how they respond." Hodkiewicz
I'm not sure sure Anthony Johnson will make the 53-man roster. Wendell Ferreira 2) Of note - AJJ and Benny Sapp are the only safeties on the roster under contract for next season. Ken Ingalls
Matt LaFleur on Packers CBs facing the Bengals WRs: “I wish Joe Burrow was gonna be out there throwing them the ball to get a really good indication of where we are.” Schneidman [The backup QBs for the Bengals either stink or had bad days, per the Bengals' press corps tweets I read. TGR]
For the third consecutive practice, the No. 1 safeties were Darnell Savage and Jonathan Owens. Rudy Ford, not Owens, is listed as a starter. [But see Paul Bretl's take on the safety position. TGR] Huber
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Anders Carlson about 2 yards short on an approximately 58-yard field goal following Jordan Love’s 2-minute still vs. Bengals defense. Kick was true…just very far. 2) Anders Carlson’s first 3 field goals: PAT wide right 37L good 39R good. Wood
Anders Carlson made seven straight FGs before missing from 56 & 60. Schneidman
Carlson goes 7 for 10 on kicks today. Long make was from 51. Also missed from 56. Demovsky included the PAT miss, 56 and 60 misses on Field Goals. TGR]
Bill Huber wrote a nice article on today's joint practrice. You can read it by clicking here.

Maybe I didn't know which sites to go to, but the coverage by Bengals beat writers is a wasteland. Perhaps Cincy is a baseball town. Packers fans are fortunate to have the coverage we routinely get from Wisconsin media. That said, some Wisconsin media observers didn't go to Cincy to watch in person, so the details were difficult to find or perhaps just not there. Practice was 2 hours and 6 minutes.
DJ Reader was destroying GB's run plays. I don't suppose it helped when Jenkins was booted out of the practice. Bakh doesn't normally take every snap with the ones, so I assume without having solid evidence that Nijman played some #1 LT snaps. No idea who filled in for Jenkins after his vacation. Probably Newman? I gather #1 were Bakh, Jenkins, Myers, Runyan and Tom. Not much doing in the run game as that group didn't move anybody. Aaron Jones bounced one run outside, might have been another decent run. Love didn't face too much pressure, I gather.
Now we have to guess who those #2 offensive linemen were who supposedly stunk up the joint. Hanson didn't practice and Tom took every snap at #1 RT. So I assume #2 OTs were Nijman or more likely Jones and Walker. Interesting that some think Walker >> Jones. Walker's name hasn't appeared that much in the tweets. LG was probably Newman until he had to play with the ones. Not sure who replaced him with the 2s. OC without Hanson was probably Schneider with Empey with the 3s. RG was likely Rhyan. #3 OTs probably DeLance, Tenuta (who I've less about lately), and Telfort, who looks like a development project GB likes.
I used a photo of Jonathan Owen because he is getting at least a long look and probably is in serious consideration. Bretl thinks Savage/Ford, but Owen gets a lot of snaps. Moore and Anthony Johnson get some snaps. Hard to say, but it doesn't seem like things are clear yet. That's okay: lot of camp left, plus 2 more joint practices and 3 preseason games. Interesting that Owen played personal protector on the punt team, a job reserved for Leavitt. Leavitt needs a backup, and is Bisaccia's guy, so until demonstrated otherwise, I have Leavitt penciled in on the 53.
RDE Trey Hendrickson was sacking people. If he beat Bakh, that would have been noted, I should think. Still, not sure who got wrecked. We know Van Ness beat a third string RT, but he apparently beat other guys, we just don't know who or if they were 2s, 3s, or 1s. Still, good to see.
Love was okay. Command of the offense, knowing where to go, mostly good. Couple of positive comments from Bengals' players about Love. The 17 of 29 includes drills where the QB is not rushed and a WR and DB go one on one. I think he was 11 of 19 in red zone, 11 on 11, and move the ball. 2 TDs and an INT.
A mention that Wyatt is more consistent. I think it was from a PFF guy. PFF has their offices in Cincy so a couple of their guys were at practice. Good thing since tweets were scarce and what was out there were vague or just general impressions.
I don't care about the brawl. Cincy's Pratt called it just football. DJ Reader had more reaction.

I’m not particularly surprised that our OL wasn’t getting the run game going between the tackles. I am quite pleased that our DL seemed to do the same to them.
Friday should be interesting, not least in the trenches.

"The backup offensive line really had a poor day. During a third-down period, Clifford was sacked twice in four snaps."
Outside of Nijman, and hopefully Rasheed, our 2nd string OL is horrible, and our starting center has not shown much in 1 1/2 years. The thought of Royce Newman, Hanson, or Rhyan being forced to play when an injury hits is worrisome. On the bright side, Bakh, Jenkins and I believe Zach Tom will be very strong. Pray for good health. I'm really excited about our DL. Looks like we've got some help for Kenny Clark.
Here's to Aaron Rodgers having a fine and healthy year, but a lousy team record for the Jets.

If that was post Jenkins departing, presumably Newman was with the ones. So I have no clue who our LG would be. The depth at C (excluding Tom) is non existent.
One thing I did notice from video is a “sack” (really a flush) on the inside of Nijman where I’ve no idea where the G went and it looked to me as if Nijman was only semi physical/finishing and Love at 2/3 speed. Maybe it’s just my eyes, but that would seem to favor the D. If that pace/physicality wasn’t intended (it looked to be) then they need a fire lit under them, but the sprinting DE is likely to dominate.
It seems the practice was useful for the team with eyes in many locations, but it’s pretty clear that seeing anything but a very narrow widow for us fans and media will have to wait for the game.

2nd Team LG is Sean Rhyan. 3rd Team LG is Jean Delance.
2nd Team RG is Royce Newman. 3rd Team RG is Cole Schneider.
At least, that's according to the Packers Depth Chart. Really looking forward to seeing how this shakes out. Tomorrow we get our first real test. Sounds like Love and the 1s will get a series or two from what I've read. That means a lot of reps for those fighting from those groups. Good.
Just found some Bengals fan video of practice that gives a little more info on some of the plays. Watched Myers closely. He's looking like he had a much better practice yesterday. The missed block in the INT near the goal line looks like it may have been by Reed in a bunch formation. Hoping we don't do a bunch, pardon the pun, of this stuff when it matters. Just blast it in there with the run. Nice TD by Melton.

Newman has been playing left with the firsts when he’s been used there and Rhyan I think swapped, but I’m not sure. The depth chart is not currently one I’d rely on as being what is happening on any given day

August 10, 2023 at 11:28 am
I hold that to be true as well. Depth charts don't really mean anything. Spoff mentioned Rhyan is backing up LG. I know, I saw Newman over there plenty on Family Night at LG.
What did you think I meant with "At least, that's according to the Packers Depth Chart?"
Whatever.
We'll see mañana.

This is great, TGR! Thank you for compiling all and sharing your thoughts.
I LOVED this: “Why do I think Reader knows who Jenkins is?” Lolz.
First joint practice with a bunch of new players. I’m not overly concerned about all those sacks we’ve given up, yet. Nor the poor run blocking, yet. Nor the seemingly bad play from our #2 & 3 OL, yet. Most of the stuff I chalk up to the proverbial “It always takes the O longer to gel than the D in TC.”
Sounds like the O struggles were mostly in unscripted periods too. Again, ton of youth. First joint practice.
However, like you, TGR, I want to know who is blowing their run blocking assignments???? “What the hell is going on out there???!!!”
I’m looking forward to now seeing how this Packers team adjusts. Equating this a little bit with halftime adjustments, which the best teams are adept at doing well.
Pretty sure Huber called out Love’s deep sideline pass to FB Henry Pearson as his best pass of the day. Pearson caught it over the shoulder with one hand. Do we have a FB battle between Deguara & Pearson? If not, why not?
How serious are we about open competition? Are we going to follow through with “Let the best man win?”
I’m finding drops by Doubs, Musgrave & Reed a bit disturbing. Would like to see Melton get #1 reps with Love to see what he can offer and help send a message.
Note: A dear friend from one of the earliest Packer Forums ever went by the moniker “CatchTheFuckingBall” CTFB.
Yeah. CTFB.
—
SAFETY - I’ll caution again that we won’t know anything about the position until the live hitting/tackling of preseason games begins. RUN STOP. Savage & Ford didn’t even know what that meant in 2022. I’ll reserve judgement on Savage, Ford, Moore, Owens & AJJ until then - after all 3 preseason games.
I am liking Benny Sapp III a bit more too. That “personal protector” on punt team by Owens is a great observation, TGR, and telling.
Sounds like we made it through this first joint practice injury free, without too much blatantly stupid stuff. Good. Jordan Love made a strong impression on the Bengals. Cut those dropped passes in half, and finish those blocks, and Biker Billy’s Cooking With Fire (title of an actual Cable Access TV program from the early 1970s. You can find it on the interwebs).
Bonus Round: Henry Pearson’s team photo. Look at it and ask yourself, “Do you want to be blocked by Henry Pearson?”
The return of the FB? I’m here for it.
Good to hear Packers defense is “throttling the Bengals offense, both 1st and 2nd teams.” - per Paul Dehner Jr. (Schneidman) He mentioned the Packers D dominated in the 11 on 11 periods.
Lastly per Schneidman, LaFleur said it was the first time since he was hired in 2019 that they did a team dinner on the road, with everybody together, at a steak house in Cincinnati. Said, “it was pretty cool.”
TEAM building.

GG,
agreed on the lack of importance of most of this stuff it being the first meeting, while still interesting developments to track. What matters is can the team ADJUST? They faced a very stout team, and their defense is obviously unaffected by Joe Burrow's absence.
I can see it making sense to barely put JL10 into this game and have him face the Pats a lot instead. Giving him a chance to connect with depth (including but not limited to Melton) requires him being out there for significant time.
Drops might reflect strength of opposing defense moreso than ineptitude of our guys? Still, CTFB in contested situations is a BIG part of this game - and why I want to see JL10 starting the regular season sticking to high probability plays. No risk it still get biscuit via dink and dunk and DOMINATE. I think that's our most likely formula for early season success, and it leaves room for new plays being added every game all season long :)

All of this is fascinating. There's different perspectives around about who won out. Most of the CIN beat writers I was reading in the moment were pointing to the Packers O being dominant. Both 1st & 2nd units for the Packers.
Dust settles, and today, maybe it was both Ds that won the day in some reports I've read. It was just a practice! Tomorrow is the 1st test.
I saw and posted a link to a Bengals fan video that was filled with more practice content than I had seen anywhere else. More reps in 11 on 11s, and, Myers looked to have rebounded. Saw only 1 "sack" on Love.
Agree on high percentage plays as often as possible, and I put that charge solely in LaFleur's hands. He needs to guide Jordan Love successfully through his 1st season as QB1 with the goal to win as many games as possible. Not the MVP stuff he dialed in 3 times total between his 2 more famous QBs.
He needs to do what he should have done v. KC in Love's first start. Take the heat off him by establishing a power running attack. Keep the plays to high percentage in the passing game. Bring him along a little more slowly at first, allowing Love to get his confidence built strong through stacking success, and WINS. All the other great concepts are there for him to use. LaFleur should not get too pass happy, which I think might backfire if it's too much, too fast.
Take whatever pressure off the kid that you can, Matt. Let it evolve.

Looking at film clips, one of trey Hendrickson sacks came against Nijman on an inside move. It looked like a flush rather than a sack, but still a pressure.

I haven’t hit any of the videos yet. You wound up with a ton of great info shares despite fewer reporters present. Great read.
I tend to agree with you on Owens. I don’t have a lot of confidence in either of Savage or Ford, and believe competition should be wide open.
I’m a Savage fan, and I am pulling for him to make this 53. Paul Bretl has Ford as the #1. Waiting to see better tackling from both though in preseason games.

I would LOVE to see starting S determined by "assignment sure and solid tackling." Owens and who else?
greengold
August 10, 2023 at 02:50 pm
I'm sticking with my picks of Moore, and the kid, Anthony Johnson Jr as the #3. I also agree Owens stands a very good chance of being the other starter. I've had Moore written in ink as one starter since I found out we signed him. Once the live bullets fly... look out. "An assassin in the run game," is not earned by being weak at tackling.
No one has seen that yet.
In 2017, his last of 2 seasons at Southern Miss, Tarvarius Moore 6-2 190 4.32 RAS 9.24, had 59 solo tackles. 28 assists. 87 total tackles. 3 TFL, 3 INT 10 PD, 1 FR, 1 FF.
I'm hoping to see that player emerge here in preseason, now that he's getting a chance to play Safety again.
This is where the rubber meets the road, in real live game action. We need the live tackling to figure out what we really have there. Now we'll see who our tacklers are...who our most complete Safeties are.
Savage has the experience of 4 seasons but only 1 really solid year, 2020. Ford showed good ball skills last season, but both of these players were horrible in run stop. The most solo tackles Savage has had as a Packer is 56, in 15 games. The most assists he's had is 19. 3 of his 4 years he had double digits in Missed Tackle %... last year, 9.4%.
Adding all that pass rush and run stop up front these last 2 years could make all the difference in the world to how both those guys play as well...
??? We'll find out soon enough. 3 games in 3 weeks time. Let's see what happens.
Yay, competition.

Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber’s favorite quote of the day is from David Bakhtiari:
“I used to be super-against joint practices, but I think they got a good beat. I think having the understanding is good. They’re not trying to be [jerks], I’m not trying to be [a jerk] to them, too. I think that’s the most important thing. We’re here to get some work in, get some laughs, also get to know an uncommon opponent. I think that’s really beneficial. Definitely growing on me, for sure.”

I find Bakh to be a very likable guy. His utter domination at his position helps with that :)
Just guessing, but the fact that these joint practices don't face anybody on the schedule probably helps him with a positive attitude about it. Bengals are a TOUGH team, glad to see everyone embracing the challenge.

Thanks for the update TGR. Encouraging overall with lots of practice snaps and no significant injuries is a good thing for this young team. From what I've been able to read, I'm getting the feeling that Jordan Love is farther along than I expected at this point and that is another good thing.

Pretty much as I expected. But, the arrows are pointing up. Some clean-up needed in a few places. But no overhaul/back to square 1, thing. Every interview was positive & upbeat. Everyone felt good going against strangers in different colors. Lot of self-confidence got a boost. Each rep the squad is bonding, have more faith in their teammates. Not sure if the inside O-line is one problem, the other problem or two problems? The pass protection sounded good for the 1s. I don't think they want to pass too much, so they better figure out the run blocking or who's going to do it.
The D should have an advantage early in camp on passing plays, but an O-lineman should be able to get the edge on drive/run blocking any time in camp.
The part of the offense that I was assured would help our transition into Love better get its act together.
