Packers Practice Roundup, August 3, 2024

Family Night was finally blessed with nice weather, and the practice drew its usual big crowd - 60,887 per Ryan Wood.

INJURY:

DEs Enagbare and KeShawn Banks, CBs Vallentine and Callis, ILB Edgerrin Cooper, DL Deslin Alexandre, TE Tucker Kraft, OL donovan Jennings, were out.  RB Josh Jacobs warmed up but did not otherwise participate during the practice.

Matt LaFleur says the plan is for Zach Tom to resume team work on Tuesday. Also sounds like Tucker Kraft is returning to practice next week, too.  Schneidman

SCHEME:

Starters: Love Dillon Doubs Reed Watson Musgrave Walker Jenkins Myers Morgan Dillard

Smith - Clark - Slaton - Gary McDuffie - Quay - Stokes - Nixon - Jaire Bullard - McKinney  [Per Justis Mosqueda, Clark got 22, Slato 15, Wyatt 12, Brooks 3 snaps with the first team defense.  Check out his first team snap count article here.  TGR]

Caleb Jones getting some run with the 1's at RT.  Herman

Jordan Morgan at LT for the backups' 2-minute (period).  Huber

Love to Sims in the seam, had it, slightly high but a play Sims needs to make. Falls incomplete. Great block by Morgan on the play.  [Sims a bit up and down today. TGR]  Herman

OFFENSE:

Love all day to throw off play action, finds Doubs on the deep crosser. Morgan nice job on Clark.  [See below under defense where Slaton beat Morgan to tackle Dillon for no gain.  TGR]  Herman

Jordan Love drops a dime to Christian Watson for a TD over Jaire Alexander in 1-on-1s.   Schneidman

Love 2-minute Drill:  2:00 drill. Down by 3. 1 timeout left. 2:00 exactly on the clock. 1st & 10 at their own 25. 1's up first. Love to Dillon incomplete, basically a throw away. McDuffie in coverage. Clark bats down a Love pass at the LOS. Love to Doubs, but Jaire with perfect coverage. 4th & 10 upcoming. Love checks down to Musgrave. Bullard all over it. Play went backwards, defense wins easy.  Herman

Clifford 2 minute drill: Penalty on first down Batted pass. Clifford to J. Wilson for 9, clock ticks. Clifford to Toure, complete but short of the 1st down. 4th and 1 upcoming. Clock ticks. Lloyd picks up a yard and a first down. Clock ticks. Some confusion on the playcall and a bunch of time ticks off. Incomplete from Clifford to Heath. 49 seconds left. 2nd and 10 at their own 36. Rochell drops a game sealing INT, Clifford threw it right to him, never saw him falling off his receiver. Clifford drops one in the bucket to Hicks but Hicks can't hang on, Green in coverage. Drop from 81. 4th and 10 upcoming. 37 seconds left. Clifford nice seam throw to J. Wilson to the opposing 39. Timeout. 29 seconds left. 1st & 10. No timeouts remaining. Clifford to Joel Wilson down to the 28. Cock ticks. Spike by Clifford. 2nd and 10 upcoming. 22 seconds left. No timeouts. Ball on 28. Clifford to Heath for 2 yards and out of bounds. Clifford scrambles and gets out of bounds. 13 seconds left. 4th and 1. Gets his kicker a chance for a game tying FG.  Herman

Excellent blitz pickup by Emanuel Wilson to pick off Eric Wilson, giving Clifford enough time to hit Toure for a deep completion.  Hodkiewicz

Nice job by Ballentine to get outside to cut off Lloyd, but Lloyd's ability to change direction is so impressive.  Bretl

11 x 11:  Red zone period 11x11's: Wyatt all over a Dillon run. Looked like Dillon could have cut right a bit sooner.  [Slaton getting a lot more snaps with the first team than Wyatt - again.  TGR]  Would be sack for Gary vs. Telfort. Play continues but Love just throws it away. Bullard jumped a route, looked like it was going to go the other way vs. Love but Love's bullet caught Bullard off guard and it ends up as a pass deflection. Nice little run by Lloyd to the left. LaFleur with some coaching tips for Love after that throw to Bullard.  Herman

We're a mile away from 1-on-1 DL/OL but looked like Luke Tenuta had a good showing at RG - blocked Wooden, Brooks and Brooks again - good competition. Caleb Jones won his rep vs LVN at LT and then blocked Cox Jr.  Hodkiewicz

1 x 1s: 1x1 in red zone Jaire blankets Doubs Reed gets open in back of end zone vs. Nixon for td. Good coverage though. McKinney pbu vs. Musgrave Watson great catch on a fade vs. Stokes for a td Jaire blankets Wicks, pbu Bullard solid coverage on Sims, poor throw though Toure beats King easy on a slant Melton can't haul it in against Rochell, overthrown Poor throw to DuBose, Green in coverage Stanley td vs King on slant Wilson can't catch the leaping td against Williams Heath catches vs. Jaire, but Jaire forces him out of end zone. Hicks wins easy vs. Ballentine, nice route. He's a fun player. Zayne Anderson pbu vs. Swinson King awesome coverage vs. Melton, near pick Green pbu vs. Wayne.  Herman

Notable One on One battles:

  • Lukas Van Ness beats Caleb Jones
  • Karl Brooks beats Royce Newman
  • Jayden Reed with a catch vs. Kalen King
  • Kadeem Telfort beats Van Ness
  • Javon Bullard with a PBU vs. Dimitri Stanley
  • Jacob Monk beats Jonathan Ford
  • Xavier McKinney PBU vs. Luke Musgrave  Bretl

Reed wins deep vs. King for a sweet catch and td vs. King. Musgrave beats Coyle. Watson with a fantastic TD vs. Jaire, Jaire had awesome coverage too. Beautiful throw by 10. LJ Davis pbu Sapp good coverage on Sims. Toure beats Bullard. Melton easy win vs. Rochell for a td deep. Green wins vs. DuBose. Bullard pbu vs. Stanley. may have had some jersey Williams good coverage on Sims. Wicks with an absolute sick route vs. Stokes for an easy completion and TD.  Herman

Michael Pratt throwing some darts during live tackling period. He has two completions of more than 20 yards.  Schneidman

Pratt with another dart down field, this time to Hicks.  2)  Eason to Joel Wilson for about 10. Eason misses Stanley on 3rd down. Eason had Stanley for a 1st on 4th down but throws wide. Nice overall drive from the offense, but defense holds strong at the end.   3)  Clifford with back to back nice throws, one to Toure, one to DuBose. Great protection by the #2 line on the second throw.   4)  Clifford off play action to Melton in stride. Nice throw and good acceleration after the catch by 80 for a good pickup. Ballentine in coverage.  5)  Love hits Reed in stride for a big first down on 3rd down in team. Love tried to hit Watson up the seam on the next 3rd down but despite the good throw, it was a hospital ball and Williams and Watson collide. Watson stays down for a moment but appears ok. Incomplete.  [Perhaps Love made that throw because he knew no tackling was allowed, but that's a ball that get receivers injured in a real game.  TGR]   Herman

DEFENSE:

Jonathan Ford with a big time TFL on a busted play. Howard and Eason not on the same page on a hand off.  [It looked to me like Monk immediately dove at Ford's knees.  TGR]  2) Eason to Wayne, incomplete, Jonathan Ford in the backfield on the play.  [Ford has had a nice camp.  TGR]  3) Morgan couldn't get any movement on Slaton and Slaton helps get a stop on Dillon right around the LOS. 3)  Brooks and Cox all over a Lloyd run. TFL.  [The Packers had some issues running inside.   TGR]  Herman

Van Ness gets home for a "sack" to end No. 2 red zone.  [Van Ness continues to terrorize while playing with the number twos.  TGR]  Hodkiewicz

Cox misses a tackle in the backfield. Merriweather picks up a first.  2)  Odumegwu with a nice TFL on Howard.  3) Hopper with a tackle near the goaline on 4th down. Defense holds the offense despite the offense getting 4 extra downs.   4)  Gary gets into the backfield immediately for a would be 5-yard loss on a toss to Lloyd.  5)  Gary his second "sack" of practice. Love tried to roll right, Gary wasn't having it.  6)  McDuffie all over a Dillon run. He's been a run stopping machine in camp.  Herman

Really nice play from  rookie LB Ty'Ron Hopper. In trail coverage on thrid-and-8, Jordan Love dropped a pass in the bucket to Christian Watson. Might've been Love's best throw of the night. Would've been a big gain, but Hopper stuck his hand in and forced incompletion.  Wood

Ty'Ron Hopper stops Howard a yard short of end zone in live-tackling.  Hodkiewicz

Clifford checkdown to Toure, Bullard with the immediate stop. King there as well.  Herman

Rochell all over a Stanley reverse for about a 6 yard loss.  2)  King nice pbu on a fade to Hicks. King just fights for everything.  3)  Mosby would be sack, PBU by King to end the team period. Field goals up next. 4) Lloyd tries to bounce a run outside but Ballentine is all over it behind the los.  4) Stokes comes back with a nice PBU a couple players later against Doubs. Risky throw from 10.   Herman

SPECIAL TEAMS:

1st punt team for the Packers: Wilson, Van Ness, Orzech, McDuffie, Welch on the LOS. Zayne Anderson as a personal protector with Davis and Dillon in the backfield too. Ballentine and Rochell as the gunners.  2)  1st FG team was Sims, Walker, Myers, Newman, Orzech, Rhyan, Slaton, Morgan and Davis on the line.  Can expect to see that lineup unless Jenkins/Tom/Kraft are going to be involved in it.  Mosqueda

Joseph drills a 55 yarder. They say timeout before the play, but still counting it. Joseph drills it again. 2/2. Now 37/40. Carlson makes his. No timeout before the play, so he goes 1/1 and is now 33/39.  Herman

Punt play...first two players down by the returner - Isaiah McDuffie & Eric Wilson. Football players.  Hodkiewicz

MISCELLANEOUS:

Standout of Family Night was probably....who else? Romeo Doubs. Beat Stokes for TD on slant in red zone Beat Nixon for TD on fade in red zone Made tough contested catch vs. Jaire Ran an absolutely sick route to get wide open for big gainer in 11-on-11.   Kruse

Rookie Kalen King had a wild period. He gave up touchdowns to Samori Toure and Dimitri Stanley, but also had great coverage to win his rep against Bo Melton. Moments later, he gave up a long touchdown to Jayden Reed.  Huber

I really like the way Jordan Morgan is blocking tonight. He looks good.  2)  Dontayvion Wicks is really hitting his stride. Another completion. Just feels like he’s always open.  [wicks looked good even though he only got 6 snaps with the ones, per Justis Mosqueda.  TGR]  Herman

Larry McCarren is very high on first-round pick Jordan Morgan. Said he'll dominate people once he gets the technique down but he's still getting it done in 11-on-11 and 1-on-1s because he's so good and athletic. "Doesn't look the part of a rookie...a lot of God given ability."  2)  Packers really need Zach Tom back at right tackle.  3) Bo Melton had a good night.  Kruse

Gary would have demolished Love there. 52 continues to be a problem for Telfort.  Nagler
