Packers Practice Roundup - August 16, 2023 First NE Joint Practice

MISCELLANEOUS:
That it for the first of two joint practices with the Patriots. Went 2 hours and 27 minutes. [Though the Packers were alone on the field for about 30 minutes, with NE only coming out onto the field at 11:00 or so.] Demovsky
Coaches being very vigilant making sure no fights break out. Some talking between rookie Dontayvion Wicks and Patriots DB Jalen Mills after a punt drill. A Patriots coach walked up to Mills and made it clear to knock it out before anything escalated. [Coach LaFleur also chastised Malik Heath, telling him to keep his poise, and to get over himself. Heath said something and LaFleur angrily said "I don't give a bleep." This happened 30 feet from where I was sitting in the stands. TGR] Wood
The Packers waived Jeff Cotton from IR with injury settlement. Aaron Wilson [Settlements usually are in game check increments, which for Cotton is $25,000 per week because he has a split contract after being put on IR. TGR]
DL: Wyatt, Slaton, Wooden OLB: Smith, Van Ness ILB: Walker CB: Douglas, Nixon, Valentine S: Savage, Moore. Wood
Patriots-Packers Day 1: Pats offense starts fast, fizzles, ends with bad final periods. Mac 16/25, Zappe 15/21. Mac had 5 “sacks” today, Zappe 8. Packers CB Rasul Douglas dropped 2 Mac INTs. Zeke didn’t participate in team drills. Malik had 3 QB snaps, finished at WR. Andrew Callahan - Patriots beat writer. [Doesn't sound like he thought much of NE's offense. TGR] 2) Bill O'Brien is back, but fixing the Patriots offense will require more than good coaching. Trust, relationships, the system all broke last year. "I love (Belichick), but he f—ed us." 3) Patriots defense played Jordan Love, Packers starting O to a draw in final 2 periods. 4) Love hit a long TD after 0/3 start with a sack, then nickel-and-dimed them in 2-minute. 5) Bailey Zappe would’ve taken 5 sacks on his last 6 snaps in a game setting working behind the backup O-line. Some pressure was instant, other “sacks” were on him for clutching the ball. 6) Mac Jones opens 4/5 with 2 probable sacks against the Packers’ starting defense [that is, Mac Jones would have been sacked twice on those 5 snaps TGR]. Callahan
Matt LaFleur says the Packers are trying to consider ways to get Carrington Valentine on the field: "I think we definitely have to look at something, because he's done a lot up to this point." He isn't ruling out Rasul Douglas playing safety if it gets 5 best DBs on field. Wood
INJURIES:
Isaiah McDuffie appears to be ILB3 with De’Vondre Campbell not practicing due to an ankle injury. 2) Matt LaFleur says David Bakhtiari will not practice today. The plan is for him to participate in tomorrow's joint practice. 3) WR Bo Melton is not practicing because of a hamstring injury. Wood
Not practicing (that I’ve seen): Bakhtiari C. Jones Gaines Tenuta Nichols Goodson Melton Stokes Haven’t seen Carpenter or Clark yet. Bretl
QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:
Good deep ball from Jordan Love, but Romeo Doubs couldn’t hang on. Doubs got behind Patriots DB Jack Jones on a deep corner to the right, and Love put it where it needed to be, but incomplete. [Not precisely a drop but rather a failure to make an adjustment at the catch point - Doubs never got himself into a good position. TGR] 2) Jordan Love moved the Packers for 40-yard fg in 2-minute drill. He completed 5-7 passes for 47 yards. Both incompletions throw aways. A 20-yard slant to Romeo Doubs got drive started. Doubs caught 3 passes for 34 yards. Christian Watson 2-13, including 7 on 3-4 (3rd and 4 yards to go). 3) Sean Clifford overthrows a well-covered Malik Heath on the right sideline during 2-minute drill. Incomplete, but Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was apparently impressed. Turned around and started 4) Sean Clifford throws another dart to Malik Heath down the right sideline, and this time he does not miss. Dropped it into a bucket from 31 yards over Patriots CB Jack Jones for touchdown, ending the backup 2-minute drill. Clifford has backup QB job all but locked. Wood
Starting offense: Play-action. Nice blitz pickup by Jones. Doubs has step on deep corner route, looked like he didn’t find the ball right away. Nice pass. Run for Jones for few yards up middle False start Packers Really good protection. Love’s throw to Reed over middle a little underthrown. [This is the same as Number 1 above by Wood. TGR] Bretl
Great snag by Jayden Reed on a missle from Love over the middle on what would have been a big gain. 2) Great job by Heath pulling in a ball from Clifford that was behind him and not breaking stride. Tough play, made it look easy. [Heath is going to be a tough guy to cut. Lots of WRs showing good ability. TGR] Nagler
What a throw and catch from Love to Christian Watson. Perfectly executed deep corner route that, assuming Watson stayed in bounds after the catch, went for a 75-yard TD. Ball traveled about 40 yards in the air and dropped in over CB Christian Gonzalez, the 17th pick this year. Demovsky
I thought today was very promising from Love. Against a NE defense that threw blitzes, different personnel looks, and coverage disguises at him, he went through his progressions, took what was available and hit on a few big plays. Bretl
Packers No. 2 offense wins two minute on a dime down the right sideline from Sean Clifford to Malik Heath. Heath made a diving contested catch and hit the pylon. That was a beauty. 2) Jordan Love completed 7-of-10 passes during first team period against Patriots defense. Lot of short and intermediate stuff. Couple bullets complete over the middle. One perfectly lofted go ball deep left that Watson had go through his hands. Schneidman
Clifford in 2 min. 1:30 left. Watts sits in zone. Complete. Taylor in flat gets out of bounds. Clifford rolls out to buy time, then runs for 10ish yards. Over throws Heath over middle. Slant to Watts incomplete. PBU. Possible sack in live tackle but Clifford finds Wilson on quick out. Goes through reads, finds Wilson over middle for some YAC and gets out of bounds. Nice blitz pick up by Taylor. Clifford finds Chrest on left sideline. Incomplete to Deguara on sideline. Good coverage by NE. Initial reads not there. Taylor with a great blitz pickup, Clifford to front right corner of end zone to Heath for TD. Great pass and catch. (I guess the red called him down at the 1). 2) Packers starting offense (2 min - that is, with Love): Doubs gets a lot of separation on slant. Good gain. Incomplete to Doubs down left sideline. Overthrown. Good coverage. Watson sits down in zone over middle. Good YAC opportunity. Nice contested catch by Watson over middle. Incomplete to Watson on corner route. Under pressure. Connects with Doubs on slant. Quick out to Doubs. Gets out of bounds Quick out to Watson. Throw high. Carlson no good from 40 as time expires. 3) Sean Clifford at QB: Handoff to Wilson. Pearson lead blocker. Complete to Watts with some YAC Wilson hit at LOS Incomplete to Taylor in flat. Slightly ahead of him. Complete to McCrary in flat. Defender there. Initial reads not there. Finds Chrest on shallow crosser. Few yards. [Fans in the stands thought Taylor just dropped this pass - and one other one. TGR] Bretl
TIGHT ENDS:
Really nice throw and catch from McGough to Kraft. McGough rolling left, funds Kraft on sidelines. 2) Play-action, quick pressure from NE by blitzing nickel. Musgrave was the blocker. Bretl
Jabril Peppers just made Musgrave look every bit the rookie he is in pass pro. Nagler [Same as Bretl's 2 comment just above, but more precise and with no bark on it. TGR]
A 6-foot-6 rookie TE ran a red-zone jet sweep against the Patriots today. The Packers aren't hiding that they think Luke Musgrave is special. He laughed when I asked about the play. "Those are awesome." Schneidman
Got some red zone ish work coming up. Run goes nowhere. Love to Musgrave for a beautiful touchdown. Awesome throw. Leaping catch. The real good stuff friends. Herman
OFFENSIVE LINE:
OL gets beat for quick sack. Tough to tell but looks like came from right interior (Myers, Runyan) Incomplete, throw to Dillon in flat. Very good protection again. Love finds Watson downfield who gets behind both CB and S. Out route to Toure for 10+ yards. [Love had wonderful pockets for the most part. Clifford saw quite a bit more pressure working with the twos. TGR] 2) More from starters: Reed sits down in zone. Love hits him. NE there to limit pass. Myers beat, pressure on Love, throw slightly behind Watson over middle. 3) Sean Clifford at QB: Quick pressure by NE. Sack. Nice cutback by Wilson. Gains a few yards Middle clogged up on run. [The 2s not as good as the ones today. TGR] 4) [The ones most of the practice were] Nijman-Jenkins-Myers-Runyan-Tom Watson-Doubs Musgrave-Deguara Love-Jones. Bretl
If anyone thinks the Packers are trading Bakhtiari you better wake up and apologize. Schneidman [I don't think GB is going to trade Bakh because I think the team will win enough games, but depending on how the first 7 games play out, they should consider it. TGR]
Sean Clifford time. Wilson inside. Tough sledding. Wilson off tackle. Tough sledding. Clifford to Watts for a first down. 2) Looks like Love might have been sacked. Throws over the middle to Watson. Ball gets tipped away. Clifford to Heath on a slant. Clifford to Heath on a crosser for a nice pickup. McGough incomplete. McGough sacked, finds Kraft on a checkdown tho. Royce Newman destroyed on a bulrush. Pats just miss a deep shot to Thornton. Had a couple steps on Moore. [Heath had a good day. TGR] Herman
DEFENSIVE LINE:
NE starting offense in 2 min drill now: Quick out incomplete. Complete on out route. Close to a sack by Enagbare if tackling. Sack by Karl Brooks Jones buys time. Nice contested catch over middle with Valentine in coverage. Another contested catch over middle. McDuffie tackle Jones escapes up middle. Slides and spikes ball. Incomplete. Pass low. FG kick good from 40. 2) Another nice pass rush rep by Karl Brooks. Heavy safety rotation today. A lot of different combos being used. Great push by second/third teams IDLs. 3) It’s been pretty constant for 2 weeks but Karl Brooks just continues to make plays. 2 pressures in NE 2 minute drill today. Bretl
Really nice run stop by Jonathan Ford followed by a likely sack by Enagbare. False start Enagbare next play. Jonathan Ford with another run stuff. He’s made such a jump from last year. Herman
Karl Brooks is constantly in the backfield. Think they got something there. Nagler
LINEBACKERS:
Another good day for Cox, who again made his way into the backfield. [I watched Enagbare destroy a NE OT and Hollins caused havoc as well. Mac Jones faced consistent pressure. TGR] 2) From what I saw anyways, a solid day for McDuffie. Was able to get outside on one run to stop the ball carrier from turning upfield. There was another where he filled the gap really well at the LOS. 3) Really impressive day by the Packers IDL and edge rusher groups. First and second units. [Brooks for sure put some pressure on during joint practice. TGR] 4) Patriots offense in red zone: Hollins and Smith at edge. Jaire at CB. Moore and Savage at S. Incomplete pass. Walker close in coverage. Nice job by Walker and McDuffie to get outside, limiting ball carrier who was trying to get to edge. Good pass rush reps by Smith and Hollins. Incomplete. [I didn't see Van Ness do much, but all the other OLBs had good days. TGR] 5) First play I see is a really nice pass rush from Cox. Likely a sack. Coverage sack. Hooper, SJC, Leavitt, Thomas, Sapp in defensive backfield. Thomas beat on crossing route Arron Mosby just bull rushed the OT into the ground. Bretl
SECONDARY:
Rasul Douglas with one of those savvy, vet plays he’s known for. Peeled off an underneath WR to cover Pats TE Hunter Henry on a corner route. Douglas had a leaping INT from Mac Jones in his hands, but couldn’t complete the catch. Dropped and did a few push-ups for dropped pick. 2) Mac Jones tried to test rookie CB Carrington Valentine deep. Threw a go ball down right side to DeVante Parker. Valentine was all over it, blanket coverage. That pass had no chance. 2) starting defense kept Patriots starting offense out of end zone on 5 reps from 10 yards and in. Jaire Alexander forced an incompletion on a Mac Jones pass to DeVante Parker in the end zone. Sticky coverage, Parker couldn’t come down with the football. Wood
Tarvarius Moore with the 1s at safety. Had strong game vs Cincinnati. Huber
Jaire with a PBU in the end zone. Made a really nice play on the ball. Second defense: NE tries end around, nice play by Mosby staying home to make play. Fade to back left corner. Incomplete. Valentine in coverage. Overthrown. TD NE from the 5. Quick out. Bretl
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Packers K Anders Carlson hit all five of his kicks, a PAT and FGs of 41, 44, 49 and 51 yards. Kicking with wind. Silverstein [All of these were in opening drills, with no rush. Carlson missed both his field goals during team with a rush, one short and one right. TGR}
Anders Carlson missed the 40-yard field goal wide right. His fifth missed kick wide right since Friday night. Had a perfect day going before that. 2) Anders Carlson pops a 43-yard field goal straight up, and the wind knocks it down. Must’ve been some 10 yards short. And left. Welp. Wood
Carrington Valentine is doing work on special teams too. Covering punts and jamming for punt returns. Dontayvion Wicks with an awesome block on PR. Jayden Reed the primary punt returner today. He looks so smooth catching the ball on punt returns. Packers basically did an Amari Rodgers re-do and I think they crushed if this time. 2) Whelan is dealin. He just murdered a ball. Herman

I did manage to get to the first joint practice with NE today. Nice day, and I met a nice couple from D.C. The fact that they mostly watch CHTV's film and you tube stuff (meaning not my articles) didn't faze me.
New England appears to have a pretty good defense. Love picked on CBs Christian Gonzalez (17th pick in 2023) and Marcus Jones (85th pick in 2022).
It was difficult to select an outstanding player. Watson, Doubs, and Heath had very good days. Bad timing for Bo Melton to be out.
The #1 OL had a good day, if a little less when running the ball. The OLBs all had very good days, as did the #1 and #2 defensive lines. I used a photo of Rasul Douglas and Jaire Alexander just to remind folks how good they have been for the entirety of training camp. Brooks and Cox making noise again, but Hollins and Enagbare with fine days as well.
I am staying overnight in Green Bay, so I should be there on Thursday for the 2nd joint practice with NE. That is, if the rain leaves the area and there so much that it makes the field iffy. Fingers crossed.

Aw, this is beautiful, except for Anders Carlson missing two easy FGs. He’s gotta nail those. Easy.
Stop fu*king around, Anders!

TGR! Glad you made it today, man, because your review here is great!!! Thank you. I’m seriously buying you a beer (or whatever you like) tomorrow. Red Hot Julius Peppers t-shirt, wearing a Stetson, round glasses, with the lovely red head at my side. Careful, she’s funny as hell, and knows her football! Think 9am is early enough? Would like to get seats, around 25 yd line RIGHT, where SST’s gonna be.
Quite a successful day when you consider whose D they faced in practice, with a lot of room for improvement! I find that very encouraging.
We’re going to find a way to keep a 6 DL rotation. There’s NO WAY Ford doesn’t make this 53.
Expanding on DL: Haven’t we needed a real, full rotation of high quality DL players for years? Plus, Wyatt was incredibly effective used in rotation at Georgia.
We’re keeping 6 OLBs. Cox Jr. for sure. I’m wondering if Mosby challenges Hollins? I’d like to keep both! Hollins was spectacular in the CIN game in few snaps. Efficient. Had a great TC to this point. Enagbare is hitting high octane. Tough calls with this group, and more I failed to mention. 6 OLB because we learned last year how important pass rush and fun stop are up front last year, etc. etc. etc.
Mosby’s got some beast to him. I like him. Very capable, versatile player.
And, how about that Sean Clifford pick? It’s way early, but he’s got some game.
Jordan Love’s poise sounds evident with Belichick dialing up pressure, and JL still able to complete some explosive plays for scores, dink & dunk for 1Ds and move the ball.

What the what??? Musgrave on Jet sweeps? Luke said he ran them in practice at Oregon St, but never in a game. “Those are awesome.”
Musgrave was “giddy,” when asked about his running LaFleur’s called jet sweep deep in the red zone: “those are awesome … those are fun, so hopefully we keep on doing it.”
“Yeah, we did do that, yeah,” quarterback Jordan Love said smiling. “When you’ve got a guy that’s as fast as that, like Luke, just try to find different ways to use him. Yeah, it’s interesting. It’s a new play for us, something we haven’t been able to do in the past, but with his speed, like I said, just trying to find ways to use him.” (per Matt Schneidman at The Athletic)
Sounds like we’ve got a really special one in Musgrave.
WOW! Do yourselves a favor and check out Schneidman’s full article at The Athletic. The commentary he shares from Christian Watson on his teammate, Musgrave is phenomenal!

It was practice, but more positive takeaways for GB than NE on the day, judging by comments from both Packers and Patriots reporters alike.

Good post. Wish I were there for those practice sessions. I would buy both you and TGR a couple of cold ones to fight the heat...and of course, one for myself.

GG,
tough call on weather for me today. The field is forecast to get less rain than where I am, 1/4" here with maybe the worst of it just passed through. Early today the call was for .01" here today. The radar at the field looks like they've gotten very little so far, if it stays that way it should be fine. I just think if the field's soggy both teams are going to prefer to practice indoors?
Forecast calls for rain being done until 30% chance from 1-2 PM. A nice 70° with less than 70% humidity. I've got a longer drive than you, not sure if I'm going to head into this. I was hoping to get to two this week, thinking it would be a really good chance to see what's what. Hearing MLF say this is the most grueling part of their practice schedule seems to confirm my initial idea. Had some business come up yesterday so I didn't get to go. Glad I got it done but combined with Monday being rained out ...
Yes 9 AM arrival should get you nice seats based on attendance I've seen. The 25 yard line (R) being a good spot to watch O line drills and 11 in 11 action is based on how they did things when the pads first came on, I don't in fact know they'll use the field the same way with Belichek and Co there. Sounds like some great stuff to see!

Understood. Looks like that whole front passed through. We’re going to leave Milwaukee around 7am. Should be another beautiful practice day.
Funny. Just took the dog out and watched that front moving out over Lake Michigan. We’re very close to the shore.
We’re hitting Kroll’s after practice if we somehow miss each other in the stands and you change your mind. Hoping you do! This should be really fun to see them practice with NE Day 2 after making some adjustments.
To use Mike Holmgren’s line to Reggie White: “Come to Green Bay!” Belichick’s not going to want to practice indoors. Radar looks clear in GB now. It would be great to meet you. Thanks for the info!

Almanac says .25" of rain on the field. Not sure when it ended but there's a good chance the ground soaks all that up by 10:30 and it's fine. Chance for rain ending outdoor practice vanished; high of 71% with humidity falling through the 60s in %
I should have gone to Green Bay! Looking forward to all the reports from those of you who did ...

It's time to bring in some competition at K. At the very least to see how the pressure effects him. Or go all in and call Crosby and Gould and see which one is cheaper. Gould vs the Bears week 1 would be fun.
Ford sounds better against the run than Slaton was at this time last year. I'm going to go out on a limb and say he plays more snaps this year than he did last year.

This guy is about one missed kick away from leaving , so I'm not sure how much pressure it adds to bring somebody else in. Everything is fine with Anders as long as he doesn't miss any kicks, and if he does, he'll be gone. This scrimmage against New England? It's all on him to sink or swim.
If he has to be replaced, does anybody have a suggestion other than Mason Crosby?

Heath is playing good ball and I like his aggressiveness, but he's no lock and it may be wise to be careful what he says back to the head coach who in essence just told him to straighten up his act. That final response back to Heath from LaFleur sounds like he was a little pissed.
SicSemperTyrannis
August 17, 2023 at 04:27 am
Heath has deliberately been playing the part of a goon. He says if they want a goon, he'll be a goon. So this is a sharp and ironic contrast.

Heath sounds like a real character. That WR group is just LOADED with talent.
Ferrari-Driver
August 17, 2023 at 09:41 am
Agree GG. I think Heath will be fine in the long run, I just wouldn't want a guy like Terrell Owens wearing the Packers Green and Gold. Owens was talented, but was a team cancer with his mouth and attitude.

After the last few seasons, I'll take a little too much attitude rather than no attitude.
Do not like it being shown to your own coach, however. At least that gave said coach a chance to show HIS attitude too. Beats a flap of the arms.

Sounds like a pretty good day for the Packers on both O and D. It does seem like the line without Bakh remains weakest in the right middle. Other than that, seems like a practice we should be pleased with. A good one to be there for by the sound of it. Thanks again TGR.
SicSemperTyrannis
August 17, 2023 at 04:28 am
It does sound like trouble brewing with Myers and we need Zach Tom at C, at least when Bakh's on the field.
LambeauPlain
August 17, 2023 at 06:58 am
Getting ready during bares week should see Bakh, Jenks, Tom, Runyan, Nijman. If not, then MLF is again spouting bromides because he won't be "starting the best 5".
I did like the "non-bromide" MLF "correction" to Heath barking back to his HC after being told to stop flirting with an unsportsmanlike penalty.
"I don't give a "bleep!" No more Mr. Nice Guy? I'd like a few growls from Matt that what he says goes.

August 17, 2023 at 08:38 am
I don't remember Runyan having a problem (run or pass) in his first season when Linsey was there, do you?
LambeauPlain
August 17, 2023 at 09:46 am
That is a very good point T7S. It highlights why playing your best 5 on the OL is critical to harness what makes a good OL great. Synergy. Playing next to a teammate that can shelter your weakness and join your strength.
Example...Jenks and Bakh are near lockdown on the left...and the wall still holds when Yosh plays LT. The problem as I see it is both Myers and Runyan are the weak links and their individual shortcomings (mostly run blocking) become worse when side by side.
Put Tom at C, Yosh at RT and I think the O can be far better than most think and make Colin Cowherd eat crow stew, burgers, and gizzards.
Leatherhead
August 17, 2023 at 07:18 pm
Runyan is fine. He was our starting LG for a good stretch while other guys were out injured, and when the decision was made to play Jenkins at LG instead of RT, Runyan was moved from LG to RG. He's fine. Remember, we had one of the top rated offensive lines in the league last year, and he was absolutely a big part of that.
Leatherhead
August 17, 2023 at 07:15 pm
Coldworld....RG is always going to be the weak point.
You put your best guys at T and C, and then your LG should be better than your RG, making RG the weak point. Ron Wolf famously said he could find a RG anywhere. We're fortunate that we have Runyan, who has started a bunch of games at LG for us and is in his fourth year. He's still cheap this year....he'll be more expensive in 2024.
T7Steve
August 18, 2023 at 07:40 am
For some reason no one brings up that Runyan doesn't get penalties (I believe one in the last two seasons). That tells me that he hasn't reached his ceiling and can get better. If a lineman is struggling and out of position the first thing he does is start grabbing.
Leatherhead
August 18, 2023 at 11:49 am
Nobody also brings up the fact that he doesn't miss games, unlike Bakhtiari and Jenkins. I think people underestimate the benefit of having the same guys working side by side every day, versus guys being out and getting shuffled around.
In 2020, he was a Day 3 rookie and he only really played two games for us on offense, and we averaged 36 points in those two games, so he must have been OK. In 2021, he didn't play the first game, then started in all the rest of the games. We went 13-2 during that stretch, so he must have been OK.
And last year, he played the second most snaps on the offensive line, behind Myers, and this was one of the higher ranked offensive lines in the league. When the decision was made to move Jenkins to LG, Runyan moved over to RG and still kept showing up, week after week and practice after practice.
Dur-ability is an important ability. Avail-ability is an important ability. He brings both. AND he's still on his rookie deal. The hope is that he and Tom will solidify the right side, and I think it's possible they could.
People are trying to run with these narratives of Myers, or Runyan, not being solid starters, but Myers and Runyan, were the two most constant pieces of a pretty good line last year. This season, it's pretty clear to me the thinking was :
Create the best left side you can, Jenkins at LG and Bakhtiari at LT. Use Nijman as his backup/swing tackle to keep him fresher during the season. Keep Myers at Center, put Tom at RT and Runyan at RG. Tom is the primary backup at Center and LG. This ensures that we always have good people on the left side, even if we have to make compromises on the other side. It gives us a gameday backup at 4 positions. I think we could really use another horse, but for now, it's about hoping somebody else plays like an NFL starter.

croat, I can’t help but think Wooden & Brooks jumping into that DL with the savvy vets, Clark & Slaton (now), and Wyatt & Ford showing great progress, has to really take that unit over the top.
Both rookies enter this NFL with huge confidence, NFL ready body types, size, speed, power & and pretty complete tool chests. They’re wreaking havoc. Dynamite!!!
So much to be excited about, but, DL??? Who woulda thunk it?
Trenches.

Brooks is going to be difficult to keep out of the rotation. But Wooden is living up to his pre draft billing as being a bit under-sized at 270 lbs but makes up for it with tremendous stamina and motor, great strength and leverage and quickness.
Montgomery easily has the best DL room to coach up during his tenure in GB.

This is the time of year where fans get incredibly optimistic about the talent on their team, and I'm hopeful some of the hype around valentine and Musgrave and others is real.
But LVN, the guy can't even register a noteworthy play in practice. Gotta have patience with young players and allow them to develop, but was really hoping to hear his name more as an impact player this year. Maybe he will be.
greengold
August 17, 2023 at 05:41 am
Maybe today & Saturday, Cubby! I hear you. Looked at his work v. CIN pretty close, and he’s clearly got power, working at developing that NFL tool chest. How to run stunts, swim & club etc. I think that light goes on for him sooner rather than later, but time will tell.
Look at the developmental transformation of both Wyatt & Ford! Wow! DL Coach Jerry Montgomery is damn good!
Jason Rebrovich, Packers Pass Rush Specialist also looks to have really worked some wonders with Enagbare too! Pass rush was relentless v. CIN, and it sounds like it was yesterday v. NE. Good.
LambeauPlain
August 17, 2023 at 07:14 am
LVN is being introduced to the NFL were one trick pony bull rushers get neutralized very quickly.
It's going to take time to develop more pass rush skills for the NFL trench warfare. Enagbare is taking his snaps in the rotation (he should! He had a great offseason!), and Hollins is playing better than the rookie too. And if Magic Mender Mr. Gary starts the season, LVN will be spending a lot of time on the bench, learning the NFL.
But Luther has a huge ceiling. Just needs seasoning.

what are the coaches saying about the kicking situation, is it a work in progress with snap issues or holder issues or is it all on Carlson?
LambeauPlain

Seems Carlson still has mechanics issues. Kicking pop ups is a mechanics issue. He has a bad right slice that can cause even more breakdowns if he over compensates and misses left.
I simply do not understand how you have a camp competition with punters, holders and LS but not a rookie kicker! Is his psyche too fragile to handle the contest? Maybe Rich B has a gentleman's agreement with Mason to "stay tuned". IDK.

One of the misses was a run on under time pressure to get the snap off that just seems to have just failed—the short pop up. Looks like they have not got that operation right on probably more than one level. I’d say that’s a different problem.

Great job as always TGR. Sounds like most of the position groups are coming together,
Still concerned about Safety, Myers on the OL and Carlson kicking.
Give Carlson until the preseason game against the Pats this weekend. If he is still missing easy kicks give Crosby a call. That's how I would handle it.
Depending on how the next few days go with Myers it might be time to move Zach Tom up to #1 Center.
Safety I just don't know where we're at right now but it doesn't sound very good.
DL coming together. OLB and ILB should solid. CBs good. Safety?????
Offense still has some drops and Myers are the concerns there.
A number of injuries have piled up. Hopefully everyone recovers of the season opener. Thanks, Since '61

as long as carlson isn't going mental, it's all fine. he's a kicker. crosby was not great last year, and he's a year older now. how many extra points did he miss last year.
it's 2023, time to ride or die with youth.

Outstanding, TGR. So thankful for your efforts here, and the attention to detail. Makes my day.
The Anders Carlson saga reminds me of the story of the little boy out in the field with his new bow and arrows. His father approaches and the kid says "Daddy, look how high I can shoot!" Dad, ever the realist and former special teams coach from the Mulehead Morales coaching tree replies, "that's great son, but what are you aiming for?"

And kid says, "The sky's the limit."
You're always good for my morning laugh!

Good post Leotis. Now we need Bisaccia to get Carlson right by the opening game of the season. We'll see.
Thanks, Since '61

Sounds like the Packers are running the offense as it was designed. Hurray!

If they don't get the line dialed in better, it might be designed "Hurry".
