Packers Next 1-2 Punch: Christian Watson & Jayden Reed
With the extensions of Christian Watson & Jayden Reed this 2026 Off-Season, the Packers doubled down and made a statement who they can build around for the forseeable future
By Luke Leavitt
The Green Bay Packers made a statement this offseason, and it wasn't through a blockbuster trade or splashy free-agent signing.
Instead, Brian Gutekunst doubled down on his own talent.
First came Jayden Reed's three-year extension worth over $50 million. Then came Christian Watson's massive four-year, $110.5 million deal. The message from Green Bay's front office was loud and clear: these are the receivers they believe can lead the next chapter of the offense.
For years, Packers fans have searched for the next elite receiving duo. From Donald Driver and Greg Jennings to Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, with Davante Adams taking sole control of the room. Green Bay has traditionally thrived when it had multiple weapons defenses couldn't focus on. Watson and Reed have a chance to become the next great tandem.
What makes the pairing so intriguing is how different they are. Along with how they can make life easier for Jordan Love.
Watson is the home-run hitter. At 6-foot-4 with world-class speed, every snap carries the threat of a game-changing play. Since entering the league in 2022, he has averaged an eye-popping 17.0 yards per reception, one of the best marks in football. When healthy, he changes how defenses line up before the ball is even snapped.
Reed, meanwhile, is the technician. He's the chain-mover, the slot weapon, the motion receiver, and the player Jordan Love can count on in critical situations. Through his first three seasons, Reed has already established himself as one of the league's most efficient young receivers while contributing as both a receiver and runner.
Together, they create problems for opposing defenses.
The timing of the extensions is also significant. The Packers lost veteran receiver Romeo Doubs in free agency and moved on from Dontayvion Wicks, creating a clear path for Watson and Reed to become the faces of the wide receiver room. With first-round pick Matthew Golden also developing alongside them, Green Bay has built a young core that could remain together for years.
Of course, there are still questions. Can Watson stay healthy over a full season? That's been the biggest obstacle in his career so far. Even after a strong comeback from his ACL injury, his availability will determine whether he can fully justify the investment Green Bay made. Can Reed return to the explosive form he showed early in his career after battling injuries in 2025? The Packers clearly believe the answer is yes, or they wouldn't have committed long-term money to him.
However, that's the beauty of these deals. The Packers aren't paying for what Watson and Reed have already done. They're paying for what they believe is coming next.Green Bay sees a future where Watson stretches defenses, Reed dominates from the slot and all over the formation, and Jordan Love has two trusted weapons entering the prime of their careers together. With a Tucker Kraft extension looming as well, Green Bay made a choice who they wanted to see a future with this offseason.
For a franchise that has always been at its best when quarterback and receivers grow together, the vision is easy to see. The contracts are signed.
The expectations are set. Now it's time to find out whether Christian Watson and Jayden Reed can become the Packers' next great 1-2 punch.
#Packers were late trying to extend Davante Adams, and it led to them restarting at receiver.
Brian Gutekunst didn’t hesitate this offseason when the new wave approached free agency, extending Christian Watson and Jayden Reed before their contract years. https://t.co/LGaGXE74iK

Two down with Brian Gutekunst extending Jayden Reed and now Christian Watson before they can reach market. Tucker Kraft to go.#Packers really made some choices in their passing game this offseason. https://t.co/HItyQDa2RB

Starting with these 3 guys, Watson, Reed & Kraft, GB is really set for the next 3-4 years. Yeah it's a lot of money, but the longer teams wait, the more the price rises. Hopefully the Cowboys never figure that out.
The Packers decided who they thought were the building blocks and jettisoned the 2 that were not the future for them. I like the backups we have right now and on paper we have guys that can take over if someone misses time. Experience is all they lack. The tools are there in speed, great hands, most are strong blockers. We have big fast guys if Watson is out, and smaller fast guys if Reed has time off.
The big hole is still TE with Musgrave playing more like a 6th round pick instead of a 2nd. There is still time, but who know who that person will be to man the Y TE spot. Not many options already in GB.
Holes to fill are Y TE, RB, Edge, & OL. We have some options @ RB, and OL on the teams now. But the cloud over Jacobs is a problem. And thinking the young guys can just fill the void @ Edge is sketchy at best.

Two punches isn't enough...are we forgetting about Golden here, our third punch? He's already shown he can make short gains into longer ones with his ability to dodge and weave through would-be tacklers. Just give him more chances!

The best receiving corps that I can remember was back in the 2010 Super Bowl Year. Jennings, Jones, Driver and Nelson.
Narrowly edging Lofton, Jefferson and Epps.
Pittsburgh’s WR core in 2010 was crazy good too.
With injuries and what not - we need 4-5 good WR’s. Watson, Reed and Golden have to improve.
Reed had a good first two years with around 800 yards each, but missed some time last year - let’s hope he’s back to 800 plus this year.
Watson has never had more than 620 yards receiving - let’s hope he can play 17 games and get to 1000.
Golden has potential to be an 800 plus yard receiver.
I think we need Williams to be the 4th.
Let’s not rush Tucker back too soon, we need him strong for the end of the year.
Is our line good enough to allow Love the time to cook? Now that’s the question.

The O line is and has always been THE question. Aren't all the other pieces moot otherwise?

Greg Jennings was SO GOOD in Green Bay. He was a remarkably smooth/precise route runner, and his hand discipline is still the best I've ever seen. Jennings gave nothing away with his hands, d-backs literally had no idea when the ball was in the air.
Views of Greg were negatively influenced by his parting shots at Rodgers, which turned out to be spot on. If Golden could approach a career like 85's I'd be over the moon.

Can we not put Reed in motion every play

Signing both of these players to longer-term deals was part of a workmanlike off-season for Gute. Nothing too flashy. He made the big move last year with the Micah Parsons trade. Now he is just putting his cards on the table. I like it.

Sometimes, you have to ask yourself. What trait makes someone WR NUMBER 1!
Is it them being built like a 1- For Example Watson. 6'4 220 and great speed. but has never put up numbers that any WR1 from other teams has.
This is where my argument stems from tbh. This is the problem for a lot of people including coaches also.
Being built like a 1 DOES NOT MAKE YOU a 1. ( I wont even speak on the contract )
Anyways, a 1 to me has to be the best ball catcher. which was what Doubs was and the next best ball catcher on the team is Golden.
That should be the number 1. Not the fastest, not who is bult like it, but the person who does the best at what a Wide receiver should be doing, which is catching the ball.

I see Golden more than Reed.
