Packers Need Early Season Jayden Reed Back

An return to form for the play-making receiver could help reach new levels

Like many of you, I was nervously watching the Green Bay Packers take on the Lions this past Thursday night when a fun play-call idea popped into my head. With the amount the Lions had been respecting the run and trying to stop Josh Jacobs, I thought it would be worth a shot to fake a hand-off to Jacobs and instead flip the ball to Jayden Reed on a jet sweep. At the moment I really thought that could be an exciting play that the Lions' defense might fall for and it would produce a big gain. Of course, it never happened. That's when I later realized that Jayden Reed hadn't touched the ball at all in that game. The remainder of the game was the same result, no touches, and only one target.

This lack of production, unfortunately, isn't anything new in the last few games since the Packers' Bye Week. Before the Bye, Reed averaged four catches and around 69 yards receiving per game. Since then, the average has been two catches for 18 yards, which is very pedestrian for a player of Reed's capabilities. He hasn't made up for it in the running game either as in the last four games he's only had 2 rushing attempts for 18 yards total. Suddenly the player that some considered to be the Packers' top receiver, is putting together numbers fit for the 3rd or 4th. The touchdowns are there as he's had three in that span, but the yardage has been very unlike what we're used to with Jayden Reed.

So, what's the deal? Has the passing game been that far off? We all know that's not true as Jordan Love has possibly played his best football of 2024 since the Bye week putting up 904 yards on 59 completions for six touchdowns and only one interception. When you look at the receiving stat sheet, it's either been dominated by one of Reed's teammates in each game or it shows evidence of the ball just being evenly distributed and Reed just hasn't been on that dominant side yet. Coincidentally, many of the receivers that are currently producing on the stat sheet are some of those that took a back seat while Reed was having big games.

Could this be the Packers' offense reimbursing off a little "pay it forward" action from the start of the season? Two receivers that have seen an increase in production while Reed has been down are Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks. Both receivers had a few good moments to start the season, but not many as they were caught up in blocking for the running game or helping their fellow receivers get free. Matt LaFleur always says, "No block, no rock" so this could be Watson and Wicks getting that rock after a lot of blocking the majority of the season. I could see LaFleur running a few extra plays here and there that may highlight receivers he feels he "owes" but I doubt he'd do it at the expense of one of his best guys.

Simply put, it needs to change.

Bringing Reed Back to Form

Many times when I debate why a receiver isn't producing as much as they do normally, the reason is they're not getting open. Defenses aren't naive, they'll blanket those top receivers and try to take them out of the game. That's why it's so important to have other options on the field. If the defense blankets WR1, then beat them with WR2 or WR3, TE1, or in an offense like Matt LaFleur's, even RB1 could be the X-factor in the passing game. In Reed's absence from being a big producer on the stat sheet, it is true, that other pass-catchers have produced instead. But it's not for the reason of a defense blanketing Reed and taking him off the QB's list of options. He's been open.

Re-watching a few plays of the last four games, I've seen Jayden Reed get open. Oddly enough, it seems like Jordan Love should be able to see him too. But instead Love opts for a different receiver running a different route. On the final drive for the Packers vs the Lions, on 3rd and Goal, when Christian Watson was called for what I'm not shy to say was a bad OPI call, Jayden Reed was open for the touchdown. Throw it to Reed instead of Josh Jacobs and the OPI is likely negated and the Packers go up by four barring a successful extra point.

It begs the question, sure Jordan Love has turned around his bad interception luck the last three games, but at what cost? Is he being too careful with the ball and is his avoiding of Reed due to jitters of his openness seeming too good to be true? It could be but you're not going to get over it until you try.

The Packers' offense needs to get Jayden Reed more involved from this point forward. With the team in an abbreviated Bye week coming off a Thursday night game, it may be the perfect time for Matt LaFleur and even Tom Clements to help look over the film and convince Jordan Love that he's missing out on some of his progressions and that while it's good he's being careful, he still needs to just air it out if he wants to win football games in dominant fashion.

Christian Watson is the speedy deep threat, Romeo Doubs is the clutch man, Tucker Kraft is the big target tight end, and Jayden Reed is a Swiss army knife. The Packers need to bring out the Swiss army knife to show everything it can still do. Whether they get Jayden Reed the ball on a quick-slant, bubble screen, or end-around, it's time to let it all fly and take advantage of the weapon they have. More production from Jayden Reed could lift this offense to new heights. If not, it could be another wasted opportunity.

Bring him back-?
The lions and others, have made
sure their game plan, is to stop him.
Reed just has not adjusted to that.
Keeping Reed in the slot is a must.
But with so many Lions on the LOS.
The TEs become the better alternative.
So don't look how he use to play.
Because it will only get him hurt.
The ball must be spread around.

Three TE sets were in order. Do any of the fans wonder if he is playing with cracked ribs and he is running decoy routes?

He played 25 snaps versus the lions. He’s either hurt, has pissed off LaFleur, or LaFleur just screwed up his calling. Who needs speed over the intermediate middle with single high safeties behind a packed box? Not LaFleur.

You don’t need to cover a guy on the bench, no matter how fast or sudden he is. Perhaps that is another reason why we lost.

The announcers on prime said,
the lions game plan was to take him out.
You need to stop reading between the lines.
Check the targets.

You can’t take out a player who is in the bench, that’s been done for you. If you are saying that LaFleur can’t scheme a guy as fast as Reed open then that speaks very poorly of a supposed play designing genius. Even if you can’t, to take him out of the game the Lions would have to focus their coverage, which should allow him to drag defenders and open holes for others. Not from the bench, however. It does not stack up to say he was sitting because the Lions focused on him.

Our last drive resulting in a FG, the 1st play most every set of downs seemed to be a hand-off to Jacobs. I kept saying to myself that we need to fake the hand-off; but it was not to be. I blame MLF for getting locked in on that 1st down play that resulted in little or no gain. The Lions knew exactly what MLF was going to do. So frustrating.

I posted before that this year the Packers are not looking at those 2/3 options that may be open. Last year all the receivers were contributing in most of the games. This year I see too many times a focus on one guy, and not enough on who's open? Maybe I'm not understanding the offense, but last year's team with Jacob should be almost unstoppable. They aren't because the coaches seem to be less diverse in their focus, or maybe it's Love. Either way, take what they give you, pressure the defense to cover the whole field and become the team to beat.

Last week I posted the Packers top 6 WRs in order of targets.
The distribution of targets between the top 4 WRs is as balanced as I've ever seen in modern NFL.

Now, I suppose it's possible it's per game- this week they focus more on this WR, next week a different WR.. but it seems a bit unlikely it would be such a fair distribution if that's the case. Check the numbers for yourself. Extremely similar # of targets across the WR corps.

Could it be rather that the QB is looking at the guy on the field the opponent isn't focusing on? Isn't that what we always say we want?

just watched KC drive the length of the field for a game winning FG, they didn't even have to convert on 4th down. I'm shocked to learn that this happens to other teams. Buffalo had LA right in their hands, they just couldn't make a stop. How, why?

If the Cardinals had beaten the Seahawks the division was basically theirs for the taking, what the hell was the matter with them.

If Love is being pressured the way he was against the Lions, he doesn't have the luxury of going through all his reads.
The Packers need to address both lines first. OL is not strong enough against top teams, DL is even worse.

'Games are won in the trenches'.

Patty Mahomes hasn't played well this year but he has a D who will carry him in these times.

This is a roster/coaching/Scouting/FO problem, not a Jordan Love nor Reed 'problem'

Green Bay has not given Jordan Love the protection he needs against the top teams with powerful DL's. I think it is unconsciounable to put him in harms way like that and know he will do what it takes because he is good guy---
and then have the nerve to blame him.

"Coincidentally, many of the receivers that are currently producing on the stat sheet are some of those that took a back seat while Reed was having big games."

It's not a coincidence, it's the opposite of a coincidence. It's also the reason why Reed's lack of targets is only a minor concern. The passing game has been very productive during this stretch, and in fact the entire offense has been productive. We knew coming into the season that there were going to be discrepancies in each receiver's production from week to week, as they can't all have high production all the time because there is only one ball. Plus the running game and Tucker Kraft are taking up more space. And guess what? Romeo Doubs will probably be back next week, so there will be another mouth to feed.

I hope they get Reed more involved, but as long as the offense remains productive overall, Reed's relative lack of involvement will remain very low on my list of concerns. I think he is too good of a player not to have some more big games down the stretch. But maybe he won't, and maybe that will be okay.

Before the Lions game the Packers had won 7 of 8, so I wouldn’t say not getting Reed the ball was a problem. But the shine has come off the apple for Hafley’s defense the last two weeks.
Love’s first half inconsistency and a sub par defense is what will doom this team unless there is a drastic turnaround.

The passing game shouldn't be that complicated. When Love sees someone open, throw it to him. Throw it quickly and accurately. If it ends up being the same receiver every time, so what. When Love sees a one on one mismatch pre snap for a big play, give your target a hand signal and go for it. All MLF needs to do is scheme dudes open within 2-3 seconds and whoever Love sees first teach him to let it go. If his protection is really good and he sees something developing and needs a second longer, do it. But for God's sake, don't pass up a sure thing and hold the ball hoping something better will open up. We don't have an elite OL and that's where holding calls happen.

Reed played on 56% of the snaps. Packers only had 44 plays all game...mostly because the D could not get off the field. I do wonder if Reed sucked it up and played hurt as a decoy for his mates...given his explosive ability that concerned the lions.

lions ran 75 plays and after their last 3 and out (only 2 all game), their remaining 6 possessions resulted in 4 scoring drives, one on downs and the Nixon int.

Reed will be fine. The Defense? That dastardly Barry Ball zone will wreck this season.

We had a 28-24 lead with 14 minutes to go. Lions used about 5 minutes to score a go ahead TD on about 10 play drive.

Now, it's our turn to answer, down by 3,with about 8 1/2 minutes to go. We have a nice drive of our own, and we're 2nd and goal and a....penalty....on Watson for OPI forces us to eventually settle for the tying field goal instead of a go ahead TD, setting the stage for the Lions walkoff FG.

IMO, it's not as much about the snaps or the time, it's about your possessions. You only get about 10 or 11 possessions in most games. This one, the Packers got 9 , the Lions 10 (first and last). Out of those 9, you have 3 punts and a fumble. Now you're down to 5 possessions to match the Lions output. That's a tough row to hoe.

xxxxxxxx

The Packers stopped Detroit 4 times, too. Punt, Punt, Interception, Downs. Neither team stopped the other the majority of possessions, just like we saw in all those donneybrooks across the league. . Checking yesterday's scores, 11 teams scored at least 30 points this past week, 9 of them won, and 10 of them are almost certainly headed for the playoffs.

It seems after watching that game, the real issue was our OL played what was arguably their worst game of the season.

Josh meyers was a veritable turn stile and I’m not sure anyone else was more than marginally better

Oppy, I'd agree that it was our poorest showing by the offensive line, and yet it was still good enough for us to put 31 on the board. I guess that's what they call a "paradox". This was the first time all season that I didn't believe the offensive line won more than their fair share of the battles. That's not to say they didn't win enough of them to score 31.

Isn't it strange that Myers worst game coincided with the Oline's worst game? (Careful, that's a trap).

Kurt Benkert on YouTube made a great comment that, on third downs, the Packers' silent went down to zero for the snap. The Lions had a defensive tackle right over Josh Meyers maybe an inch away. By the time the ball was between Meyers' legs the DT has already pushing Meyers back. I would like to see the silent count snap the ball with 3 to 5 seconds remaining on third down.

That's a good observation. I could see Myers was losing ground immediately and I thought that maybe it was an injury, or the opponent was playing real well, but it seemed like we were having trouble all across the line.

The only advantages that the offense has is that they know the play and the snap count. It's probably not a good idea to take that away.

I’m not worried about the offense much at all. Except for the O line which look like a junior high O line in the first half against Detroit. Way more concerned about the D line, LBs and CBs. Joy Alexander has been good in his career, but he basically hasn’t played for the last how many years due to injuries?
