Packers Must Respond to Two Straight Losses

To evoke memories of 2010, the Packers will need safeties Javon Bullard (20) and Evan Williams (33) to suddenly create turnovers and interceptions.

The Green Bay Packers enter its Week 17 game against the Baltimore Ravens with a goal of responding to one of the worst six day periods in its recent history. The Packers lost back-to-back games in the final five games of the season for the third straight season, but these two felt much worse.

The Packers had two-score leads in the second half, on the road against two playoff teams, the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears.

The Week 15 loss to Denver brought the catastrophic injury to star defensive end Micah Parsons as well as the short-term injuries to two other important players: right tackle Zach Tom and strong safety Evan Williams.

However, the loss that followed against the Bears this past Saturday night evoked memories of the darkest day in the franchise’s history this century. The Packers held a 10-point lead with under 3 minutes to play, but couldn’t finish the game. Botching an onside kick, giving up a touchdown on 4th and 4, fumbling its chance to score on the first drive of overtime, and then allowing a 40-yard walkoff touchdown pass.

Even before watching replays of D.J. Moore’s catch against Keisan Nixon, it looked eerily similar live to Tramon Williams giving up a touchdown catch to Jermaine Kearse in the infamous “Seattle Game.”

So how do the Packers respond? Since 1995, this is the 9th time the Packers have had a regular-season losing streak in games played in December and January. This includes 2023 and 2024, where the team was still a playoff team.

The only other times the team had a losing streak this late in the season and still were a playoff team were in 2010 and 2015. We all remember how the 2010 team responded to tough losses in Detroit and New England before reeling off 6 straight wins to finish the season. In 2015, the Packers finished the season with a blowout loss to Arizona and a division-losing loss to the Vikings. They did win a playoff game, but the season ended in Arizona a week later.

Losing Streaks in December/January since 1995

Season Consecutive Losses End Season Result
2025 at Denver, at Chicago TBD
2024 at Minnesota, Chicago, Philadelphia* Loss WC - at Philadelphia
2023 at NY Giants, Tampa Bay Loss DP - at San Francisco
2017 at Carolina, Minnesota, at Detroit Miss Playoffs
2015 at Arizona, Minnesota Loss DP - at Arizona
2010 at Detroit, at New England Won SB XLV - def. Pittsburgh
2008 Houston, at Jacksonville, at Chicago Miss Playoffs
2005 at Baltimore, Chicago Miss Playoffs
2002 at NY Jets, Atlanta* Loss WC - Atlanta
1999 Carolina, at Minnesota, at Tampa Bay Miss Playoffs

The only other time in recent memory where six days felt this challenging was the end of the 2002 season. The Packers entered their Week 17 game against the New York Jets with a chance of clinching home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. Remember, this was a time when the Packers did not lose home playoff games.

Rather than clinching the #1 seed, the Jets steamrolled the Packers 42-17. The Jets got motivated midway through the first quarter when the entire stadium saw the New England Patriots knock off the Miami Dolphins, ensuring the Jets of controlling their own destiny in the games against Green Bay.

Six days later, playing a second-straight game without safety Darren Sharper, the shell-shocked Packers fell to the Atlanta Falcons 27-7, in a game that was never close.

Thankfully for the 2025 Packers there is still time to recover. As bad as the last two weekends were, they weren’t demoralizing, heartbreaking playoff defeats.

If this team can overcome some poor injury luck and get back Jordan Love, Evan Williams and Zach Tom, they could be a team like 2010, that was a threat to the entire conference, even if they were the last seed.

If they are to be that team, the one area where they have to start creating their own luck is in turnovers. The 2010 team had a superior secondary to this year’s team, as they racked up 14 interceptions in that six-game winning streak which ended in Dallas with a Super Bowl trophy.

Game Opponent Total INTs Players
15 NY Giants 4 Williams, Collins, Hawk, Shields
16 Chicago 2 Peprah, Collins
WC at Philadelphia 1 Williams
DP at Atlanta 2 Williams* (2)
Ch Gm at Chicago 3 Shields (2), Raji*
SB Pittsburgh 2 Collins*, Bush

* Returned for a touchdown

This team has just eight interceptions all season and only one is from the corner back position. If the team is to generate the turnovers needed to make a late-season surge it will likely be coming from the difference makers this unit has: Edgerrin Cooper, Xavier McKinney, Javon Bullard and Williams.

Second year players Bullard and E. Williams have played well. Expect even more out of them? Sure, yeah.

Meanwhile, the Packers have ZERO sacks the past 2 games and Rashan Gary and LVN have ZERO sacks (combined) over the past 8 games (LVN missed several of those games but he has just 1.5 sacks all year).

How come more is not expected out of the (highly-paid) 2019 1st round and 2023 1st round picks?

Have we just given up on them?

It’s time for everybody to step up both on and off the field. It doesn’t matter who or how much they are paid at this point. Everyone should be fired up to be the best they can be. That includes the coaches. In this case rewarding those who stand out, regardless of status and being willing to give others more chances when a starter isn’t.

Best DE on Sunday? Cox. Perhaps he was on a snap count, if not he was woefully under used. Either way, he needs more on Saturday. Just one example. We need to be ready to ride the hot hand now we have lost most of our blue chip players and, conversely to sit the cold ones.

Coldworld,
This snap count thing seems a bit odd, doesn't it?
They can put Jacobs, Watson, and how many others out there for the full game, but a well-rested guy coming back from 8-10 weeks off and on fresh legs needs a 'Snap-count'?
WTF, this ain't Pop Warner!

Neither Jacobs nor Watson was out there for the full game. Read TGR's snap count.

The WRs...our main 3 WRs all played between 62-64% . When they needed a breather, we had Golden and Wicks. They got a combined 2 targets, whereas the Big 3 of Watson, Reed, and Doubs got 15 targets.

I think this is just how we roll. The Oline and QB play every snap, but the rest of the guys rotate in and out.

Neither Gary or LVN are that good. Gary was massively over hyped at M. Didn't like the pick and I am a M fan. LVN is what he is now. I remember John Madden saying that by year 3 in NFL you know what a player is going to be. Seems to be true.

Funny, I think fans who closely follow college programs are often right about how their players will perform in the NFL.

I had friend who is a 49ers fan but also follows Oregon tell me that he thought Evan Williams was a steal in the 4th round while a Hawkeye fan told me he could not believe LVN was supposed to go in round 1 because he never noticed him on the field in college.

Then again, I had a close friend back in the day who was a Cal fan and told me he didn't think Rodgers would ever amount to much in the NFL so you never know.

Fatigue doesn't make one a coward, fatigue makes one surrender, or a quitter, depending on how cruel a description one places upon it.

I don't believe this team is fatigued, or surrender, or quit. I do believe this team simply lacks continuity with each other, and the coaches are at best average. Nothing else can be derived from what is seen week to week, and regretfully, year to year. There appears to be a design to how things work and regardless of its previous fails, every group of players and coaches must adhere to it, hence the repetitive seasonal reruns and predictability.

It’s easy to be critical of a coaching staff when things aren’t going perfectly, but finding someone better than Mlf is harder than most realize. He currently holds one of the highest winning percentages in the NFL, outperforming almost every peer in the league.

When you demand a coaching change, the odds are heavily stacked against you; most new hires fail to win consistently, and when they fail, the franchise is forced to start the entire rebuilding process over again.
The primary argument against LaFleur is that he "can’t win the big one," but a look at the data shows how flawed that logic is. Over the last 20 years, dozens of coaches have cycled through the league, yet only a select few have actually won a Super Bowl. If winning a title is the only metric for success, then almost every coach in NFL history is a failure.

Furthermore, history shows that the grass is rarely greener on the other side. There are almost no instances of a franchise firing a consistently winning coach like LaFleur and immediately hiring someone who delivered a Super Bowl. Before calling for a change, fans should recognize that stability and winning at this level are rare—and losing them often leads to years of mediocrity.

There's a lot of accuracy in what you say, Murf, but you left out the part about too often 'playing down to the competition'! How do ya feel about that?

Oh, and not just that, there is fault on Mlf's part don't get me wrong. I wish he would improve, but my thoughts are that as long as you're winning, I'm very skeptical in feeling good when it comes to firing him.

MLF is safe, until Love starts calling him out, in the manner Rodgers did with MM. The problem for Love in that, is he hasn't earned enough on his own as Rodgers had to speak out.

Doesn’t matter we lost the last two. What matters is winning the next game.

The only parade I want to see is a Super Bowl champions parade . Unfortunately I feel if the Packers are in a parade this year it will be in a clown car .

Any help we can get would be fine, and I'm still pissed that MLF let Al Harris get away to become the Bear's D-Backs coach!
Shoulda' hired him the minute the Cowboys let McPuffy and his staff go!

Just nothing we can do about it, what's done is done (right Romeo?).

There's a difference.

We should've picked up Rivers as our QB with Love/Willis out and we'd win some games. As for "you can't drive in a parade and watch it too", you can also drive in a parade and stall out too! That's what the Pack did Saturday thanks to 'not sure-handed Dubs & no-cover Nixon.

First off, you can't just "pick up" players on other teams 53.

Secondly, Rivers is 0-2 since his return. Not seeing all these imaginary wins you're envisioning.

The Packers should respond by cutting Rashan Gary today.

0 sacks since October 26th. Missed Tackle % has ballooned to 10.5%, the highest since his rookie season. Get him the F outta here. Cut him. No one's going to trade for that abysmal showing. 56.5 Pass Rush Grade? 2 hurries against the Bears? Two...

That's how you man up, Rashan??? Wow. Hey, you got your money. $38,000,000. For WHAT??? Jogging???? During a game against Chicago???? RASHAN???? GTFO.

Cut him today.

I called Nixon's coverage on Moore of pulling, a Tramon.

Never turning his around around and playing the ball.

Otherwise known as a Kevin King Special.
*******
Besides the personal blunder that cost the game, (see Romeo Doubs).

The Packer defense gave up 207 yards in the 4th quarter and 5 minutes of overtime.
Being outscored 19-3.
Not going to win a lot of games like that.

So you'd like to see a DE rotation of Van Ness and Enagbare, backed up by Cox and Mosby.

He obviously was horrible against Chicago, as was the rest of the defense, who only held Chicago to 9 points prior to the onside kick.

Lphill....That isn't a bad idea.

Sometimes a benching lights a fire with some players and they come out with a vengeance to prove them wrong (motivated).
It's been proven to work.

Gary seems too 'comfortable'...period.
Generational wealth does that to some players, it just does.

Personally...i'm done with him. His R.O. I. is horrible.

With great wealth, comes expectations, and he simply, hasn't delivered.

Excellent post Lp.

So "maybe" getting bench improves Gary. And Maybe he comes out with a vengeance.

Or...Maybe....Gary is a better player than the guy behind him.....the professionals who run the team sure think so.

I've pointed out several times that trading or releasing Gary after this season would save almost $20M in salary and bonuses for next year, but it would also create $17M in dead cap.....and we'd still have to replace Gary on the roster.

So rather than jettisoning a core part of one of the league's better defenses because you think he's not living up to "your " expectations, and putting $17M on dead cap, it's probably better for the team to keep Gary for 2026. He's a solid starting DE in the NFL and I don't see removing him makes the team better.
