Packers Made the Right Move by Extending Elgton Jenkins

The Green Bay Packers announced they had signed offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins to a four-year contract extension worth at least $68 million. There are incentives included in the deal that could make it worth as much as $74 million and the $68 million total includes a signing bonus of $24 million which will help the Packers spread out the cap hit over the length of the deal.

This was a good move by GM Brian Gutekunst. Jenkins is a valuable part of the team’s offensive line and is just entering the prime of his career. His rookie contract expires at the end of this season and the former Mississippi State star would have been an unrestricted free agent this offseason if he didn’t agree to an extension with the Packers.

Jenkins will turn 27 on December 26th so this contract will take him through the age of 31. Green Bay has now locked up Jenkins through the prime of his career.

Jenkins is considered one of the best offensive linemen on the team along with left tackle David Bakhtiari. With Bakhtiari’s health and age now causing questions about his future in the NFL, locking up Jenkins gives the Packers more stability along the offensive line and means that at least one of the team’s top two linemen will be back next season.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was very pleased with the announcement. “It's a great day for us, a great day for Elgton. Obviously, he's earned it, and he does it the right way. It's always fun as a coach to see guys that get rewarded for not only their performance, but what they do in that locker room, and the leadership he brings. I can't say enough great things about him. He's been just awesome since the day he set foot in this building, and just brings so much to our team.”

Jenkins started his career at guard. He almost won the job in training camp but then took over as the starter after the opener when veteran Lane Taylor was lost for the season with an injury.

In his second season, Jenkins was a Pro Bowl performer at left guard starting all 16 games. That was his best season of his career thus far mostly because he stayed healthy and played at a very high level.

In 2021, with Bakhtiari out with a knee injury, Jenkins moved to left tackle and did a very good job protecting Aaron Rodgers’ blind side. Unfortunately, Jenkins himself suffered a season-ending knee injury later in the season and was limited to eight games.

Jenkins was able to return to the lineup in Week 2 this season and hasn’t missed a snap since his return. He struggled early in the season while playing right tackle but was moved back to left guard and has gradually returned to his pre-injury form. His slow start to the season and the team’s disappointing season kept him from earning Pro Bowl honors this season but he clearly can return to that level.

Jenkins’ versatility makes him even more valuable to the team than his high level of talent alone. He has already played both left and right tackle, left and right guard and even taken a few snaps at center since joining the Packers. He is not only capable of playing all five spots along the offensive line, but he can also play them at a high level.

“It's wherever we need him,” LaFleur explained when asked about Jenkins’ versatility. “I think he can play anything. I really do. I think he's shown the ability to play tackle, I think he's a hell of a center, obviously guard. I think he can play anything.”

Because of his versatility, there were questions whether the Packers would pay Jenkins as a tackle or a guard when they sought to sign him to an extension. The fact that he struggled earlier in the season at tackle and has played well at guard once moved there helped settle that issue. Instead, the new deal makes Jenkins the second-highest paid guard in the NFL with only Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts earning more than Jenkins will as of now.

Now the Packers know Jenkins will be part of the team’s future along the offensive line. The team will be better because of it.

I think so too. I am a fan of having a good offensive line. Down the road this will be seen as a smart decision for locking up a very versatile and effective lineman.

FWIW I totally to agree.

Jenkins' trajectory is still rising, whlist D-Bakh's is regrettably now falling. 2 full years post knee surgery and the "Persian Diversion" still can't stay healthy and available for duty - there's a cap hit to be "eaten" there, but Jenkins should rightfully be the highest paid O-lineman on the Packers squad in 2023.

Nobody is going to argue with it being a good move. The argument is longevity for the price.
Experience means nothing on the Field now. If a player shows he can handle the position.
He deserves that position. .
Isn't that everyone's argument per Love vs. Rodgers?
Just because he's a Gutey Draft pick from the 2nd rd.? Why overpay Jenkins?
His numbers this year; do not go with the pay scale. In Green Bay it's wait your turn.
Yet Runyan had move to RG, because Jenkins couldn't handle RT.

I would have brought in an OT last season as I constantly wail to the wind and cover the hedge. Rhyan amounted to nothing, so far, as Hanson and Newman are stiffs. This guy is two to three drafts behind the curve. Might as well burn down the house and rebuild.

Rhyan was the future @RG. Not any more. We need guys who want to play in Green Bay. Not just for the money.

I think, if he is now healthy and the medical Prognosis is good as far as durability, that this was an obvious move. However, the scale and seemingly clear intent to use him as a LT means that the health expectations need to be accurate for the future and in terms of his prior mobility returning. It does likely have knock on consequences, so the risk is not just Jenkins but what we don’t have as a result.

Remember, prior to Bhak's extension in 2020, he was experiencing knee sprains/issues ? During that season and 2019. Hold our breath and hope the Brain trust read the tea leaves correctly.

I know they made the right decision. "To keep Jenkins." It's the $$$$ I don't like. They need Jenkins between Tom and Myers. Jenkins took the lead and they followed. He has to play LG until the players around him learn their assignments. Especially Myers.

I would put Tom at RT and refi Bhak, if they want to chance another run for gold.

No surprises. It is unfortunate that they could reach a handshake deal and sign the contract on ~ Jan. 8th or whenever the Detroit game gets played so the SB proration didn't fall in both 2022 and 2023. Money was about as predicted. SB was about as predicted. 4 years is expected.

Just think if we had traded Rodgers and made a haul in draft picks like Seattle got for R. Wilson, and didn't have to pay Rodgers $50 million,

I like it. Everything starts with getting people blocked, and Jenkins is a good blocker. Personally, I’d use him at Center.

Biggest problem I have with it is it happened "IN SEASON" just like BAK's. We are potentially repeating the same mistakes. What would it have mattered if it was done with a post season "HEALTHY" Jenkins. He could get hurt in the remainder of the season and be out nearly all next with a bunch of money and question marks for...NO REASON. Jenkins is not all the way back. His play is not what it was before..yet. Time will tell and I wish him well because he is my favorite OL. Gute is an odd duck.

Yes, but it keeps him off the market, and I don't think we want other teams making him offers. I do agree he's not all the way back, because I've heard so many athletes who had major leg injuries say that it took them until the next season before they really felt like themselves again.

If we want to to put the best 5 blockers we can on the line, Jenkins is certainly one of those 5. We also have Runyan, Newman, Myers, Tom, Hanson, Rhyan, Walker, and Caleb Jones. That's our Top 9, the guys we dress out for games in 2023, unless we get somebody better to push them off the roster. I'm not including Bakhtiari since I believe he'll be traded or he'll retire in the offseason.

I am so glad that we retained Jenkins. He is ProBowl caliber & he will only get better after healing for another off season. I have no idea how to handle the cap so I will let the Packers braintrust handle it come what may, but it is critical for the Packers to win the line of scrimmage and protect the QB (whoever it is is). I suspect that Rodgers will come back since his rookie receivers are coming around quite nicely and since his line will be intact. The offense will continue to improve if we are able to keep our core players & play our best healthy linemen.
