Packers Game 13 Recap l Lions 34 Packers 31

The Green Bay Packers fell short of the Detroit Lions 34-31 on what was an entertaining Thursday night football NFC North battle. QB Jordan Love finished 12/20 with 206 YDS passing with a touchdown. RB Josh Jacobs finished with 66 YDS rushing on 18 carries and WR Christian Watson had 4 catches for 114 YDS receiving. The Packers defense could not stop the Lions on the final drive as Detroit went 4/5 on fourth down conversions. In case you missed it, here is the recap:

The Lions started with the ball as QB Jared Goff was looking for WR Amon-Ra St. Brown early with two straight completions for the first down. DET utilized their running back duel threat early with RB Ty Montgomery gaining 13 yards and an 8-yard screen pass to RB Jahmyr Gibbs. As the Lions swiftly moved into the red zone with a 28-yard completion to WR Jameson Williams setting up first-and-goal. After an illegal contact was called on CB Keisean Nixon setting up a fresh set of downs for the Lions, RB Montgomery ran 3-yards for the touchdown.  K Jake Bates made the extra point giving the home team the lead DET 7 GB 0 with 9:41 left in the first quarter.

QB Love took a 7-yard sack on the Packers first play. On third-and-9, Lions S Brian Branch was called for defensive pass interference bringing WR Jayden Reed down giving GB a first down at their own 45. On third-and-6, QB Love overthrew WR Dontayvion Wicks forcing the Pack to punt to the DET 8. The Packers defense was able to step up and force a three and out as DE Rashan Gary sacked QB Goff for a 3-yard loss on third down. GB started at their own 48 in an ideal position to move down field. However, a 5-yard run by RB Jacobs then two straight incompletions lead to a GB punt as P Daniel Whelan sent the ball 41-yards to the DET 11. On third-and-4, the Packers challenged the ruling on the field of a first down as RB Gibbs was pushed forward past the chains confirming the call stands. On third-and-5, second year DT Colby Wooden was able to break free and stuff RB Gibbs for a 3-yard loss forcing the Lions to punt. The last play of the first quarter was a 7-yard run by RB Jacobs.

Second Quarter: Lions 7 Packers 0

On the first play of the first quarter, QB Love completed a pass to WR Watson who got the ball knocked out of his possession resulting in a Lions fumble recovery at the DET 46.  Packers LB Quay Walker was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty with an academy award winning flop by Lions OT Dan Skipper setting up first down at the GB 25-yard line. The Packers were given first-and-goal at the DET 1 after a defensive pass interference call and RB Jacobs ran the ball in for the touchdown. The Lions offense moved with a sense of urgency on the Packers defense with a 20-yard completion to WR Williams to the GB 42. The first play after the two minute warning was an 11-yard pass completion to TE Sam LaPorta setting up first-and-goal at the GB 4. DET went for it on fourth-and-goal at the half-yard line as QB Goff completed a short pass to RB Gibbs for the touchdown. K Bates made the extra point as the score was DET 17 GB 7 with 11 seconds left in the second quarter. QB Love took a knee concluding the first half throwing 3/7 with 31 yards passing. Halftime adjustments for the offensive line protection was necessary for Packers HC Matt Lafleur.

On third-and-10, QB Love threw a clutch touchdown pass to a slanting TE Tucker Kraft who made an amazing two handed grab for the touchdown. K McManus made the extra point as the score was now DET 17 GB 14 with 13:15 left in the third quarter.

K McManus made the extra point as the Packers took the lead GB 21 DET 17 with 11:15 left in the third quarter.

The Lions found themselves on fourth-and-1 as QB Goff was able to sneak and dive his way for the first down gain. DET continued to push downfield with a 13-yard run by RB Montgomery and 9-yard run by QB Goff. A 20-yard run by RB Gibbs set up first-and-goal at the GB 8. On fourth-and-goal, QB Goff was able to convert a 3-yard touchdown pass to WR Tim Patrick giving the Lions the lead. The successful extra point made the score DET 24 GB 21 with 5:02 left in the third quarter.

The Packers offense was stalled with a three and out drive after a QB Love completion to WR Watson was stopped 3 yards short of the first down. P Whelan punted to the DET 22-yard line. On fourth-and-1 and their own 31-yard line, the Lions went for it as RB Gibbs was wrapped up by LB Walker, S Xavier McKinney and LB Isaiah McDuffie (who had a team leading 15 tackles) short of the first for a turnover on downs. The final play of the third quarter was a 21-yard completion to TE Kraft to the DET 6 setting up first-and-goal for the Packers.

Fourth Quarter: Lions 24 Packers 21

K Bates made the extra point as the score was now DET 31 GB 28 with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter.

The Packers were able to move the ball down field efficiently with QB Love’s confidence connecting with WR Watson for a 29-yard completion then WR Wicks for a 26-yard completion to the DET 19. After a questionable offensive pass interference call on WR Watson, GB found themselves at third-and-goal at the DET 14 as QB Love was stopped for no gain on a scramble bringing out K McManus for the successful 32-yard field goal attempt. The score was tied GB 31 DET 31 with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter.

The Packers D was not able to contain the Lions as they effectively moved down the field with a couple of QB Goff completions into GB territory. On third-and-7 at the GB 37, QB Goff completed to RB Gibbs for the 7-yard first down as the clock ticked down to 1:55 for the two minute warning. After a no-called offensive pass interference completion to WR St. Brown, K Bates was able to make the game winning field goal 35-yard attempt. The O-line wasn't prepared at the start of the game and the backs got the yards they did without much help from them. The pass protection which everyone says they're good at didn't stand up to the Lions' backups causing them to have to help with backs, TEs and ends so that they couldn't get involved making plays.

The Lions got away with quite a few penalties that the Packers were called for and some were quite blatant. The ones that were called against the Packers were at the worst times, so the penalties weren't really a wash at 7-7. The O-pass interference pick they called on Watson was clearly two guys accidently running into each other and could have been called the other way just as easily.

All in all the Packers kept the score closer than the ass kicking they got handed to them. You can't compete with the best teams if you let them take advantage of your mistakes and you don't take advantage of theirs. Or let them take advantage of all your mistakes and you only make them pay for some of theirs might be closer to the truth.

It's obvious that Detroit has no fear or respect for GB's defense. Going five times on 4th down should motivate the defense, but it didn't.

The last one was insane. That was a perfect opportunity for Green Bay to make a statement, but they just got overpowered, again.

The Packers have a great offense, but their defense is not good enough to make them a Championship caliber team. I hate to say that, but after that performance I can't reach any other conclusion.

Sure, they have injuries, but so does every other team at this point of the season.
