Packers 38, Niners 10: Game Balls / Lame Calls

Better play and a little luck yields a rout

Now that’s how it’s done.

It wasn’t perfect, but Green Bay finally got back to what produces convincing wins, while giving Packer Nation a welcome break from hair pulling and nail biting. Behind a powerful run game, creative play calling and three key takeaways, the Packers took advantage of a diminished San Francisco team and delivered a 38-10 thumping to its long-time playoff nemesis.

On both sides of the ball, Sunday’s game had the earmarks of a head coach who was sick of the mistakes, underperformance and middling effort of the previous few weeks and cracked the whip on players, coaches and himself.

The Niners helped, first by limping into Lambeau without their stars at  quarterback, left tackle and defensive end, and then committing crippling penalties, missing possible interceptions and letting a couple of key passes slip through their hands that would have turned the game the other way. Still, Green Bay stuck to its plan, executed well and owned the game during all but the third quarter.

GAME BALLS

Josh Jacobs — Yep, him again, and thank goodness for that. All he did was go 26 carries for 106 yards and three touchdowns, setting the tone for the game right from the jump. In a previous column I spoke about how in the inevitable comparisons with Aaron Jones, Jacobs hits holes with more burst while Jones is better at continuing to churn and move forward after contact. This game made me re-think the second part of that, as Jacobs bulled his way for extra yards time after time. His lower center of gravity also results in more missed tackles. There is simply no longer a doubt that the Packers are better for the switch. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈

The offensive line — No matter how good he is, Jacobs doesn’t have the third most rushing yards in the league without the line doing a stellar job blocking. This was a weakness coming into the season, but this line has come into its own in the run game while continuing to do a respectable job protecting Jordan Love. Josh Myers, in particular, has taken big strides forward.  🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈

Matt LaFleur — This team rises and falls on the job its head coach does during the week: zeroing in on problem areas, holding players accountable and game-planning for the offense of the upcoming opponent. Let’s not forget how young this roster is, and as talented as many of them are, they simply can’t be left to their own devices. Perhaps more important, LaFleur recognizes when things need to change, and isn’t stubborn. And so, after what was nearly a month of a stagnant offense (in part due to Love’s injuries), we saw a return to motion and misdirection in the run game, creative play calling (the little,  disguised screen to Tucker Kraft for an early touchdown was a thing of beauty), better red-zone performance and discipline that resulted in only five penalties for 40 yards. Meanwhile, LaFleur got the entire receiver room involved with more use of the middle of the field, the one blemish being Christian Watson’s drop that was a certain touchdown.  🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈

UNSUNG HERO

Daniel Whelan — The Irishman punted four times for an average of just under 50 yards, including a booming, 59-yarder in the third quarter at a time when the Niners were threatening a comeback. Whelan has been doing excellent work all season.

LAME CALLS

The defense — You’re thinking wait, the D held San Francisco to 44 yards rushing, 10 points overall and took the ball away three times. That’s a winning formula almost every time. But keep in mind: The Niners were playing a quarterback who hadn’t seen game action in two years, they got behind early and only ran the ball 16 times (to Green Bay’s 42). Despite dominating time of possession, the Niners matched the Packers in yards per play and total drives. Even before Green Bay jumped out to a big lead and forced the Niners to be one-dimensional, it was clear Jeff Hafley decided to make Brandon Allen beat him through the air. With two of the best running backs in the league in Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason, taking away the run made total sense. But as soon as San Francisco had to start throwing most of the time,  Hafley changed little. That was the time to blitz often, to attack a non-mobile, rusty backup, yet it rarely happened. We keep hearing about how this defense isn’t yet all it’s designed to be — especially when it comes to pressuring the quarterback — but it’s fair to wonder at this stage if that’s an empty promise.

Credit is certainly due for the three takeaways, particularly the Lukas Van Ness strip sack and Keisean Nixon punching the ball out of Deebo Samuel’s hands after a reception. Allen was sacked twice, but wasn’t under duress that often. It’s an ongoing issue. Meanwhile, the secondary had an average day. Xavier McKinney was gifted another INT when a ball went through Samuel’s hands, and had an excellent fourth quarter breakup long the sideline. Evan Williams was late to a George Kittle reception in the end zone, but was otherwise solid.

And then there’s Quay Walker who, aside from a strong tackle of McCaffrey from behind for a loss, had another weak game. He’s starting to remind me of the supervisor on a road crew who stands around watching as the other guys do the actual work.

FINAL WHISTLES

Overall, this is certainly a game to celebrate. The Packers are 8-3, and a lot of what was ailing the offense got fixed, although Love and the Packers were lucky he didn’t give up two more interceptions. And fortunate that San Francisco was penalized on Samuel’s kick return to open the second half. Overall, Love played a good game, the offense was diverse and the team rushed with abandon. We just need all that got cleaned up to stay cleaned up.

The defensive issues are the concern. It is hard to see this D containing the likes of the Lions, Eagles or even the Vikings, all of whom are playoff bound. For Green Bay to advance beyond its recent playoff performances, this defense needs to advance much farther beyond what Joe Barry was providing. It’s hard to explain the near invisibility of Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary in creating pressure, the seeming refusal to replace Walker with Edgerrin Cooper (when healthy) and the ongoing unsteadiness of the cornerbacks.

Let’s hope Hafley and LaFleur can conjure some solutions. Most importantly: A happy and safe Thanksgiving to all, and a big win over Miami. GPG.

Good win which comfortably puts us in playoff position.
- Jacobs makes the O line look better with his power running.
- I didn't think Love had a good game, even though a Watson catch would have padded his stats, he was off target a bit on too many throws and waits too long to exit the pocket and run.

The good. Hiring Robert Saleh pays dividends. To beat Shanahan apparently you need both of his star coordinators.

I agree that Walker had a meh game. I’ve been reading other articles where they raved about him and gave him game balls for his play. Don’t see it. I think that he has set the bar so low that whenever he isn’t totally horrible people think he played well.

What did Quay Walker do wrong? The 49ers averaged 2.8 yards per carry, so Walker's run defense could not have been that bad. I know that one long run was a result of Brenton Cox blowing contain. I don't remember Walker making any big mistakes in run defense. He made at least one excellent play tackling a ball carrier on the perimeter for a minimal gain or maybe a loss. He got some pass rush on a couple of plays and seemed to do fine in pass defense as well.

I am not a big Walker fan but you are spot on that this was a solid and complete game from him. Hopefully he can stack a few good performances in a row and start to justify his lofty draft status.

I'll admit that I've been critical of Walker but this was his best game of the season so good on him. Same could be said of Van Ness and they both needed it. Was it their fault they were drafted in the first round? No. But there are expectations, fair or not, that they'd be on a better learning curve and be contributing like, or better than this already.

Now hopefully they build on this and continue to move the needle upward. They played well against a hobbled 49er team now do it again Thursday.

The author is correct that the Oline deserves credit for doing a good job. I don't get this "problems early in the season' stuff since the Oline has been plowing the road all season long. And I do appreciate that he noticed that Myers is getting the job done, because he is.

The Quay Walker hate.......all he did was lead the team in tackles. He had one of our three passes defended, and nearly had an interception. The defense got three turnover and another one on downs. The 49ers had 11 first downs. And the guy who led that effort had a "weak game".

Sheeesh. We just can't stop slamming the D here; it's in our DNA.

I thought Hafley did exactly what he needed to do to win the game - shut down the 9er's rushing attack and force the backup QB to try to beat you. Ten points and three turnovers later the Packers have a big win. Near perfect game plan. Sheeesh is right.

I agree about dissing the Quay Walker hate. Every year people who know little about what the coaches think start ganging up on a certain player: this year it's Josh Myers and Quay Walker. I remember when it was Devante Adams.
These band-wagon-jumping fans would love to get even a sniff of what teams will be willing to pay these players.

If you watch some of the podcasts with Packers beat writers and Leroy Butler they were saying the same thing about Walker. He’s a weakness against the better teams. Ironically had Jordan Mason started Walker may have struggled again. The other problem is they really don’t have anyone else that’s a significant upgrade.

Yeah, people can't see through their dislike of Quay Walker and Josh Myers to even acknowledge when they are playing well. They seem to collect examples of poor play to highlight and forget all the things they are doing well. He didn't even mention that Walker got a sack. For some reason it doesn't show up as a sack for him in the stats, but he got there first and the game highlights say Walker got the sack.

just because a guy isn't all-pro doesn't mean he's a bad player. They are getting the job done as a team and Quay and Josh are part of that.

Jacobs was good yesterday. He just makes yards after contact at a rate that is truly impressive. The OL was not bad nor was it perfect. They were missing Bosa whom they rely on, but we still have some issues on the interior with consistency in pass blocking and, while a better day, Jacobs had to make far too many yards after breaking a tackle.

Offensively, we started well, lost the plot with strange calls that got us out of rhythm completely and then started to play how we need to. Mixed depth passing that gets Love and his receiving corp in rhythm. Defensively we also went to off coverage in The mid game. McKinney aside, that again proved a bad idea. Why against a QB with little track record and obviously not in such with himself or his catchers? As with the O, we were much better late when we switched to a more aggressive coverage approach.

I hope both LaFleur and Hafley carry their later changes in approach into Thursday. We are just better when that’s our approach. Please don’t use Watson on over the shoulder passes if possible. Despite his size and speed, just not something he’s mastered and wasn’t in his college armory, probably due to QB limitations. It’s just a lottery. Get him side on and it’s a different world.

It’s hard to know how much to take from beating a very depleted team, but we saw glimpses of what sparks us on both sides of the ball, and a mid game which emphasizes what doesn’t. If we grasp the lessons, that could be a very valuable experience that took us much closer to our potential. We need to be, Tua and co. represent a bigger challenge currently.

Let’s hope Van Ness came to life a bit at the end there, not just registering that isolated sack. Him stepping up would do wonders for Gary’s impact. Improve our rush and we become very much better too.

Positive signs other than the loss of Doubs—unless his concussion is not confirmed, the time line just seems too short. Otherwise, I don’t know of any injuries, which is a relief, given we play Thursday.

I really don't get the lame call on the defense. The defense holds the 49ers to ten points and smothers their potent rushing attack and gets a lame ball for not enough pass rush and Hafley not blitzing enough. Tough crowd.

Yes, the pass rush is not what was hoped for by the fans, but the Packer defense is tenth in the league in points allowed and 12th in yards allowed despite having only five vets on their second contract (Gary, Clark, McKinney, Alexander and Wilson) and everybody else on their rookie contracts. This is a very young bunch and maybe the fan expectations got a little ahead of what is realistic.

We have a top ten team in defense and offense (points allowed and points scored) and we are the youngest team in the league. Enjoy the ride people.

Hey - the author has to write something, even if stretching a point.
Overall, the weak pass rush and weakness at the corners will be the reason the Pack likely can't go all the way.

I thought the rest of the author's article was good but a lame ball for the defense? That was a big stretch.

Either the offense or defense is going to have to take a significant step up to have realistic Super Bowl aspirations. They are good enough to make the playoffs and win a game or two but lack a truly dominant unit that can carry a team to the championship (at least at this point). Maybe the offense explodes - the defense is good enough if the offense becomes dynamic.

Having the youngest team in the league gives me considerable hope for next year and beyond though.

"The Niners were playing a quarterback who hadn’t seen game action in two years, they got behind early and only ran the ball 16 times (to Green Bay’s 42). Despite dominating time of possession, the Niners matched the Packers in yards per play and total drives."

When you run 42 times at a little over 4 yards per run (and only throw 23 times) and your opponent passes 29 times (and only runs 16) at almost 7 yards per pass, it's simple algebra that says your aggregate numbers aren't going to look as good--your numbers are dominated by the smaller while your opponent's is dominated by the larger.

Total drives are almost always the same. Virtually every time you have one, you give the opponent the ball afterward (and vice versa). They're never going to be off by more than about 2 (end of half/game).

The criticism of the defense was baffling to me, especially the part about total drives being equal. Does the author think the Packers need to force more fumbles on kickoffs?

It depends on what you look at. In the middle of the game we have up a lot of pretty easy completions against a journeyman that QB who barely practiced as a starter last week and has not started in seasons. We were helped by some errors by The 49ers skill players as well.

I appreciated the urgency from the D. I know we talk about the poor Pass Rush ad nauseum but a team can only advance so far with a weak Pass Rush. I agree we will get a more accurate sense of GB's promise this Thursday.
I thoroughly enjoyed Jacobs, Malik Heath's delirious joy, LVN's pivotal strip sack, Nixon's heart, William's and McKinney's competence, the O-Line blocking for Jacobs. I also appreciated La Fleur getting Watson back into the game in a running play.

So nice to not see a HOF QB show up out of the backup this week. I was dreading seeing Tommy Devito II. This is a game we should have won despite all of the fretting going into Sunday (lame call on the nervous fans in my opinion). When you run the ball, win the turnover battle, and hold the opponent to 10 points, it means an enjoyable afternoon for the faithful.

Dolphins will be discussed all week in a similar manner to the worry given SF. I call BS. Run it down their throats, execute the play action with short throws across the middle, play complimentary D, have Whelan pin them deep, have what’s his name continue hitting every field goal, let the fins get cold, and pin a 40-7 loss on them.

I said the same thing last week about running the ball, except I wanted Whelan to only have to hold the place kicks for extra points.

If they can keep up the running, teams will have to adjust to TRY to stop it and it will only open up the Krafts of the world more.

If it wasn't for the holding Samuel would never have had his cut lane to make that return.

I think Walker played well and think he's still not reached his ceiling. Would people still complain even if he'd held onto the interception?

For unsung hero's I think Nixon and Brooks should be recognized for their all out hustle on McCafferty's 23 yard gain. Nixon came from all the way across the field to punch the ball out and Brooks, a 290 lb. D-lineman turning and running from the line of scrimmage to recover the fumble. That effort is something that's extremely impressive, especially when the Packers were up by a significant margin at that time. While the play didn't have a major impact on the outcome. It reflects well on Hafley's impact on the defensive to have everyone running to the ball. I felt that was extremely impressive and the efforts of those two players deserve recognition.

I didn't get to watch this game, but in a lot of games this season it looks like Gary and Van Ness are hand fighting with tackles rather than using their power or speed. Last week Gary used his power to get a sack at a key time against Chicago. We need to see some more of that.

I think crticizing Walker is as fancy as criticizing Myers. Limiting CMC, Mason, Deebo to symbolc yards per play wasn't gifted. I think it shows that LB unit worked good. I also hated seeing Walker dropping this INT and this is the single thing I've notced he could be criticized for. Of course yesterday. Sometimes we like to copy our opinions week by week but they are not always valid. also know that Walker's play was subpar in general this season but as a Packers fan I hope he will play good on Thursday.

The second aspect is that we forget there were also pro players on the other side of the ball. Of course they missed a bunch, but we missed Alexander + Cooper too. I also know a team which managed to win 2 games with their backup QB this season, so this is doable.

That game was not the marker of strength it would be a year ago, but our guys did exactly what they should. I thnk even if we shut them down there would be some negative voices. On to the Dolphins and this will be a harder one.

GAME BALLS

Josh Jacobs —
The first run of the game set the tone for the whole game. Jacobs has been so damn good. I saw he broke 15 tackles yesterday. He has been so damn good.

McKinney —
He picked off his 7th interception and it was when the game was kind of in question. It was 17-7 at the time. Packers just went 3 and out and the 49ers were moving the ball. They started at their 10 and got to GB's 45. Instead McKinney gets the Int and completely takes away any momentum that the 49ers were having. If they go and score a TD on that drive its 17-14. Instead Packers get the ball and they go down and score to make it 24-7.

UNSUNG HERO

I credit Whelan almost every week here. But today I'm going to go with a guy who i thought played well but didn't really standout persay.
I thought Javon Bullard had a really nice game. I noticed him a lot more in this game. I didn't solely watch him, but I felt like he maybe had his best game.

LAME CALLS

Watsons dropped TD before half —
This didn't hurt them at all. Technically they won the game once they scored 17 points. But if this was a more competitive game, that TD drop could have been a game changer. I believe that is his first drop of the season. Just have to find a way to catch that. It was a walk in TD. Perfect throw and its one I expect him to make.

FINAL WHISTLES

"Overall, this is certainly a game to celebrate. The Packers are 8-3, and a lot of what was ailing the offense got fixed"
This part says what needs to be said. Yes the 49ers were not a fully assembled team. But i don't care. Packers had to play with their back up QB for basically 3 games this year. We were without 2 of their best defensive players. We can talk about who wasn't on the field, and I don't care. I want to talk about who was on the field. We had Nixon and LVN creating fumbles.
The Packers Redzone has not been great this year. Yesterday they were 5-5.

Lets also talk about how we just beat the 49ers. The team that has been the thorn in our side for a long time. And there is a chance we could have knocked them out of the playoffs. And to me the best part is we beat them by 28 points. And we could have scored more. We left points off the board.

While we have a short week, we should be able to all enjoy some victory Monday!

"Watsons dropped TD before half —

I'm going to disagree in that was a dropped 6. Going to the locker room 24-7 on the kind of play that you KNOW you can't give up at the end of the half would've been a huge kick in the nuts for SF. The Packers then, inexplicably, just started chucking the ball and ended up leaving clock on a 3-and-out and punting. Watson ended up with a donut in catches for the day. That should've been a huge boost for him, the offense, and the team as a whole.

At the time it may have felt like it hurt them. But in reality it didn't hurt them.

I do completely agree it changes the game if he catches it. who knows what it does for the rest of the game if they are up 24-7 at halftime.

The reason why I put this as a lame call is because this was a TD pass that was dropped. And it was dropped by Watson who hasn't dropped a pass to this point of the season.

Walker had his best game of the year. And best LB play of the three yesterday.

Leading tackler with 7 tackles, 6 solo and 2 TFLs. And he was effective rushing the passer...brought the pressure! Another dropped INT is earning continued disdain from fans...I understand it. But if he builds off yesterday, maybe he's turning the corner (as he still climbs the learning curve).

I wish Hafley would take the green dot away and let him just play...no thinking, just go! He's more effective exploding off the snap with a specific assignment and I believe it should be at Will...maybe Sam...but he should be the pressure LB and not organizing the D pre snap. It doesn't fit his skillset.

As far as I can tell, no one has mentioned the input that Robert Saleh might have had in going against his old team. The question hiding in the closet, is whether Saleh will just remain an advisor. Yes, once again, Quay Walker looked lost at times, and almost always seemed late to the action. This is his third year, and you'd think the light should have come on by now. What could happen, though, is that he'll have a very good contract year, then regress to what he is- an average, at best LBer who has the physical tools, but not the instincts of a football player. I am glad to see Myers playing better. He was challenged and criticized in the local media, being compared to Creed Humphrey. He is responding not with words, but actions. Good for him. And as far as "luck" goes. The drop by Watson was unlucky. But on the next play, on another long pass to a different receiver, the SF defender crashed into the receiver before the ball arrived, never looking for the ball. And it was a "no call".

I don't think the defense deserves a lame call. Okay, SF was playing a backup QB, but if you're able to hold them to 10 points, you're going to win just about every time. The most important thing was to stop McCaffrey and their running game, which was really the only realistic shot SF had at winning.

By the nature of the title of article you have to come up with a lame calls. But Quay Walker had one of his better games. Yes, he dropped another pick, but he also had a sack to go along with the tackle for loss. Other writers are saying it was one of his best games.

Are you looking through (what's the opposite of rose-colored glasses) eyes that already see Walker as a liability so you can't see when he's playing well? If you're gonna be down on somebody for a poor performance, it's only fair to recognize when he has a good game. For what it's worth PFF had Walker with the highest grade on the D, grading him at 91.4. That's an elite number. Maybe go back and watch again?

Could Walker play on the DL? He could be used as Will McDonald (Jets) is-heat-seeking missile to QB. (I know McDonald is lacking fundamentals and finesse but he can get to the QB-8 sacks) Walker has strength, athleticism and speed--One mission: go get the QB.
I know he is a bit lean but he is the same height and weight as McDonald.

Whilst Mark was complimenting MLF on the play calling, it's also worth tipping the hat to the flea-flicker outside zone run. Whilst it wasn't a TD, it did move the chains, and this misdirection immobilized the secondary whilst the OL re-formed on the right.

Totally disagree Walker had a weak game. According to PFF he was the highest rated Packer defender. He had 4 stops. Two negated by penalties. A pass breakup and was perfect as a tackler.

Game Balls to a few overlooked above. Wilson and Brooks took over the ground game in the final series, and
Wicks and Heath took over in passing game, including the TD. Nice to see. They'll be needed down the stretch.
