Packers 27 Bengals 18 Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Packers let the Bengals hang around, but still get the W

While it was not the beat down, get right, "put em away early" game that many were hoping for, the Packers took care of business against the Bengals, and move to 3-1-1 on the season.

The Bengals were able to keep the game close due to an early interception from Love, and a ten minute drive to start the second half off. Take those two factors out of the equation, and this was a fairly dominant performance by the Packers against an inferior team. They were in control of this game basically from the start, and won by two scores.

But they were still a late fourth quarter third and long conversion away from handing the ball back to Cincinnati, only up six.

There's a odd schism in the identity of the 2025 Packers, and it's a major factor in the fans' frustrations with the team. This is a team that feels like it should be a veteran, world-wise unit, capable of disciplined play and able to put away any kind of opponent. We feel this way because, for the most part, the core of this team is at least in its second or third year. We know these faces, and we've seen them grow, from the scrappy 2023 version of themselves that rode house money all the way to the divisional round to now.

But the reality of the Packers is that they are not a veteran team. In fact, for the third year in a row, they are the youngest team in the entire league. By proxy, that makes them the most inexperienced team in the entire league. These ebbs and flows that we've seen from the team are a feature, not a bug. By design, there's going to be a lot of self improvement for the entire roster to make before January.

Game Balls

Matthew Golden / Tucker Kraft

Every single week, it feels like we are this close to a Matthew Golden breakout game. Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close.

We saw a couple of signs to light the way this week. How about Golden's 86 yards on only three receptions? And boy, were those three receptions spectacular.

Catch 1:

Catch 2:

Catch 3:

Meanwhile, Tucker Kraft did Tucker Kraft things, including bullying his way into the endzone for a key fourth quarter score. His other reception was another explosive play, a 24 yard reception in the second quarter.

One thing this game made abundantly clear was that these two players are deserving of an increased target share.

Lucas Havrisik

What an incredibly impressive showing for Havrisik, who finished the day 2/2 on field goals, 3/3 on extra points, and also handled kickoff duties for Green Bay. He earns a game ball for incredibly quick turnaround, following his workout with the team on Thursday, to gameday on Sunday.

Because he's unlikely to stick around on the roster, some quick background on Havrisik: The former Arizona Wildcat is the one time winner of the Pac 12 special teams player of the week, with a 34/53 mark on field goals and 73/78 for extra points over his collegiate career. Havrisik signed with the Colts practice squad in 2022, before spending time with the Browns, the Rams (where he saw some gametime and kicked a game winner against the Seahawks), the Browns again, and the Buffalo Bills, before ending up in the UFL at the end of last season.

It's likely that McManus will be back in time for the game in Arizona next week, but Havrisik has earned a footnote in the story of the 2025 Packers.

Josh Jacobs

While it took a few weeks into the season for Jacobs to get up to speed, the team MVP of 2024 has returned to form. Jacobs took 16 carries for 93 rushing yards, two touchdowns and an impressive 5.2 YPC. He added another 57 yards through the air for 150 total yards. Jacobs is making the most of every single touch he gets on the football field, and even more impressively, he did with the while battling the flu

In run blocking, I thought we saw a good bounce back game from Rasheed Walker and Jordan Morgan, but it was the outside blockers that really made the day. The Packers ask a lot from their receivers, especially as blockers on those outside run concepts. I saw a lot of great things from Matthew Golden in particular, but also from the tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave.

Lame Calls

The Offensive Line

This might be half of a lame call, because the offensive line was generally good in the running game, and was better in passing protection in the second half of the game. Here's the thing though: that's still underperforming the expectations that everyone had of this group entering the 2025 season.

There's a play in the second half that really sums up the frustrations that I have with the offensive line right now. It's third down and long, and the Bengals end up rushing only three. So the Packers, of course, end up letting the pressure get to Love anyway, who has to escape the pocket and throw an incomplete pass. That just can't happen, and it wasn't just that play. If you were watching this game, you saw lots of collapsed pockets on Love, most of which he escaped, and we even saw him pick up a few first downs with his legs. But he doesn't need to do that if the line can hold up against the lowly Bengals only sending four rushers.

The Bengals pass rush is not a playoff caliber unit, and if the Packers struggle for the rest of the season like they did today, the truth of the matter is that the offensive line is a unit that the Packers must win in spite of, and not because of. Time is running out for the line to prove that are an asset.

Lack of Takeaways

We are six weeks into the 2025 season, and your Green Bay Packers defense has only taken the ball away from the offense twice. Both are the result of interceptions by the safeties, and looking back, it probably would have been better if McKinney would have just let that Joe Flacco arm punt fall to the ground in Cleveland.

Takeaways are a hard thing to come by in the NFL, but with the major emphasis that the team put on punching the ball out in training camp, it's a bit strange that the team hasn't gotten any results out of it. Have we even seen any players attempting one? Please remind me in the comments if you can remember an instance, but I really can't.

Meanwhile, on the interception front, it's clear that opposing offenses are choosing to throw anywhere and everywhere on the field that doesn't contain Xavier McKinney. He and Evan Williams are keeping the top on offenses, and preventing any explosive plays from getting past them. I thought Quay and Edgerrin Cooper had a much better game today than in Dallas, but their role within the defense really doesn't lend itself to creating opportunities for interceptions. That leaves the corners as the other possibility to create those turnovers, and so far they just... haven't.

Turnovers tend to come in bunches for defenses. Remember how easily they seemed to come to the Packers to start of the 2024 season, and how quickly they dried up. It's possible that the tide could turn once more, but until then we are going to have to keep relying on the pass rush to be the motor of the defense.

Three and Out

--  Today's phrase of the week is "flip-flopping". As in, the offense and defense flip-flopping over halftime as they decided which unit would be good, and which one wouldn't. Over the first half of the game, the defense had pitched a shutout and dominated every aspect of the Bengals' offense, while the offense's motor was backfiring, held back by turnovers and penalties.

Then came the second half, and the Bengals clawed their way down the field for 18 total points, headlined by a touchdown that only Jamar Chase could have come down with. Tip your cap to Joe Flacco (who we hopefully won't see again this season) for an excellent second half of football. He showed off exactly the veteran savvy that the Bengals were looking for when they made that trade. Unfortunately for the Bengals, the Packers offense also found their next gear in the second half.

--  Injury Notes:Javon Bullard (concussion), Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) and Lukas Van Ness (foot) all left the game with injuries on Sunday. Matt LaFleur gave indications in the post game press conference that LVN's injury did not seem to be bone related, a positive sign.after he was carted off the field in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile as we look ahead to the Cardinals game, some stories to keep an eye on are Kyler Murrary and Marvin Harrison Jr, who may not be available for next weeks contest in Arizona

-- No team in the NFL has a bigger explosive play ( 20+ passing or 10+ rushing ) margin than the Green Bay Packers, and this game was a perfect representation. The Packers had 194 yards on explosive passes, versus 94 for the Bengals. The Bengals had zero yards on "Deep" completions, while the Packers had 111. In the turnover section, I mentioned how teams have avoided throwing the ball deep against the safety duo of McKinney & Williams, and these are the kind of advantages that the Packers can create for themselves when that is the case.

Lots of solid takes from Kalani as usual.

Agreed that the pass protection was not great in the first half. Love had to move around a lot to buy time and find throwing lanes, which is something he is very good at. I think it tends to go unnoticed because he does it so smoothly. The OL did play much better in the second half, albeit with Trey Hendrickson off the field. The pass blocking and run blocking were both improved. They finally got through a game with no new injuries. Maybe they can stay healthy and build some momentum.

Morgan replaced Rhyan a few series then took over for good. The run game improved with Morgan next to Tom and Jenks.

Rhyan was just in for the second drive I think. Morgan improved as the game went on. Was that just being able to settle? The whole OL bar Walker was poor in the first quarter but got better. Was that just rust from Tom and Banks, pain shots kicking in or triggered at least in part by Morgan settling?

Just pick a RG and stick with him, for goodness sake. Morgan should have earned that next week. The line in the second half actually started to look a bit like a coherent unit for once, at least in the run game and Jacobs visibly benefitted. Hopefully Tom, Banks and Walker survived without any aggravation and will be healthier next week than this.

It’s interesting that PFF credits Tom for the run game, rating him easily the best run blocker. Other than the one TD run, where the key block was Jenkins’ not Morgan’s, though he certainly assisted, I’d have to rewatch and focus to see, but live it seemed Morgan had more impact after the half than they credit him with. I did think Jenkins had his best day this far this year.

They continue the play to the level of the comp. They double team Michah no adjustments made, clock management is not that of a top teir team. 3rd and five they throw 30 yards down field incomplete what happened to the 6 yard down and out. so much talent yet they just can't corral it. The CB's play like they are flexing their beer muscles chirping after the whistle Act like you've been there. Still above middle tier team, hope they find the killer insticnt and clean up mistakes

Jordan love is one of the top quarterbacks in the league on third down. So whatever issues the team is having, I wouldn’t complain about third down plays.

Sooner or later Golden's going to get some more looks. Hope that isn't just because of injuries but because Love is looking for the open guy and takes advantage of "Golden" opportunities.

It does all come down to the O-line. TGR mentioned that Love seemed to hang onto the ball allot longer and maybe his receivers aren't getting open, but I think it might be that love has to move around because he's avoiding pressure all the time.

Let’s not mince words. Golden has shown a spark that demands his usage be increased in terms of volume and scope. Similarly, we have to do more to get Kraft targets. It’s criminal he had only 2. LaFleur needs to adjust to talent and who sparks things. He is not thus far.

One way to get Kraft more chances is to have an O-line that doesn't HAVE to have help all the time. Not only would that free him up more but by sending him down field he can drastically improve the running game chances for long gains. A diversion getting someone to cover him then a big blocker.

Love played well overall, but this was the third straight game he committed a critical, mind-numbing turnover. He seems to lack situational awareness, which perhaps one could attribute to youth, a quality which Flacco demonstrated throughout the game. Love's INT was inexcusable- just throw it away!
MLF's contention that he was "just trying to make a play" could be universally applicable to every ill-conceived turnover.....just throw it away!

For 1/2 of the game, Flacco's situational awareness earned about 40 yards of offense.

I will take Love's situational awareness generating 1,000 yards, 9 TDs, and over 8 yds/pass over an occasional mistake. While 2 INTs on the year is not perfection....most expect all QBs to have occasional picks during the season.

I really don't see the Packer CBs creating much in the way of turnovers. This unit is probably the weakest link on the defense and not likely to generate interceptions. If teams are avoiding McKinney and denying him interception opportunities, the turnovers are going to have to come from fumbles. And hopefully they start happening soon........

Chase and Higgins are two of the very best WRs in the League. They can, and did make spectacular catches, in this game and throughout the regular season. All Flacco, a Super Bowl winning QB, had to do, was throw the ball close to them. Those two WRs can then make plays on the ball. Our WRs can be that good, but it will take some time for them to realize their potential. As far as turnovers go, I see our LBs getting more of them than our Safeties. I see our LBs knocking the ball loose, more than getting INTs.

I agree about Chase, he’s another level. In the second half, I was thinking Flacco and Chase were playing in the backyard.

At one point, Packer fans were drooling over trading for Higgins. Maybe it was in free agency, I don’t remember. I for one was totally against it and happy it never happened.

Cinci made a huge mistake signing him to such a large contract when they already had Chase at the highest salaried level for WR’s. You just can’t have them much Salary cap going to one position, especially at the WR position.

If I had to fault anyone on those completions, it wasn’t the coverage of Nixon or Valentine (Hobbs had moved to the slot) but the failure to shade safety play to Chase, who was the one doing the damage. I think against the Cowboys Hafley got burned playing off far too far, but this week he did not repeat that but also didn’t bring the safeties into the equation. Challenging them to throw deep over the middle seems a better option than just letting them throw to Chase on the perimeter.

Chase and Higgens are the highest paid WR duo in the NFL and probably the most elite too. Nixon, Hobbs, and Valentine are not elite but good players. Packers were over matched here.

None of CBs were being used in press coverage. I even think I saw Joe Barry up in the box with Hafley because the CBs were playing very soft zone in the 2nd half and Flacco paid catch with his elite WRs...in the middle zones especially. It seemed Nixon played the entire game with his back to Flacco.

I had high hopes for Hobbs but he seems only able to play zone...and not very good zone. He is a sure tackler and for the most part prevents getting beat deep. I can see why he played more slot with the Raiders.

that roll-out left where he faded away with his feet off the ground and hit Golden deep was vintage AR - talk about elite arm talent. can that throw please end people talking about his damn footwork? the guy throws better passes with no feet on the ground than 80% of qb's in the league with their feet set.

My only fear of using our Golden Bullet too much is giving the league enough film to study his tendencies and figure out some way to beat him. Save him til #9 is on the field at the same time, and I think that's no longer a risk. Then when it starts mattering most, #11 will be BACK ... sounds like nightmares for any opposing DC.

As a silly aside, I love the way MG is leaning into the "Golden Bullet" thing, and also Bullard with his hand gestures like he's a bull. I nicknamed him Bull the first time I saw him play; I have to think he's been called that all through HS and College? He's not very big, but he seems to hit like a BULL! We don't have Ray Nitchke hitting like a Mack truck, (yet) but pound for pound he comes pretty close and surprisingly often. Nate Hobbs isn't exactly afraid to hit, either.

I still want to see the home team PLAY for 60 minutes. I hear that's how much time there is on the game clock, it seems like that might help. I'm not expecting perfection, just consistent effort. Of all the niggling little improvements that could be made to I think this one would add up to a LOT - in terms of what players could do.

GB fans ask too much from the secondary unit. Flacco got the ball out quickly which frustrated the Pass Rush but this Secondary unit cannot be expected to make up the difference with star WR's. No matter what we like to tell ourselves, the corner-room is not a starting-caliber group. Flacco is a vet and threw some incredible passes.
Green Bay's Defense misses run-blockers Wyatt, Clark and Slaton. The CB room and run-blockers will need to be the next priority in FA/Draft.

Game Balls: Golden, Kraft, Jacobs and Doubs. Jordan Morgan looked very good too.

so, not "starting-caliber" corners are somehow leading the division. interesting. generally speaking giving up just 219 yards thru the air with corners who aren't "starting-caliber" seems like shoddy detective work, little buddy.

defense missing "run-blockers"? it appears to me that Cincinnati gained 55 yards rushing. what exactly is your definition of success.

next week perhaps you can come up with more convincing responses, but this week's effort earns you an "F' for unsupported reasoning.

The CB's look competent when the opposing QB is slower in getting the ball out, but the last two games showed how Prescott and Flacco could neutralize the Pass Rush with quick releases. The GB CB is thin and cannot compensate.

That's interesting.

I would take either one right now playing next to Parsons and Gary.

Wooden was the beneficiary of Wyatt's pressure plays prior injury. Wooden and Brooks are not providing much pressure. Both are serviceable in run D because the Cooper and Walker are cleaning up behind them.

Need Wyatt back soon! I expect the Packers are looking for some decent NFL depth chart players for trade. But Wyatt can help cure a lot of ills in the front 7's pressure.

Brinson looked pretty good as a 3T. Brooks is continually up and down. If he could get more consistent that might be a good rotation. Wooden is a 3T playing NT. It’s not pretty, but then again it’s based on a pretty dubious premise that he’s a 300 pound unicorn who can beat the physical odds. We need an NT who can at least push the opponents back and be decent as a run stopper if not a true specialist. Wooden really should only be on to rush on passing downs. If that means carrying another DT, so be it. Come on Gute, get some help.

No one runs on GB once they realize if you pass, you will do well because the zone is pourous and they cant cover. Flacco realized that too late or they would have won. Once he saw how bad our defenders were he called all pass plays because they were money.
Thus, why run?

NOw wait a second. If the secondary were 6'1, 195 with speed they could play man and smother receivers and not let them run to and open spot, stop and catch a ball.
Were playing Barrys zone defense that says bend dont break and that doesnt work because we are breaking all the way to the end zone.
Nixon is short, slow of foot and cant cover to save his life. Flacco found that out too late because every time he needed a first down he looked for Nixon. It was Nixons weakness that let Flacco get rid of the ball fast not a lack of pass rush.

Lombardi’s Championship teams featured many ugly win Ws littered throughout every one of those seasons. GB has been fighting the early injury battles as well. Not an excuse, but a fact.

The W was huge. Gutekunst has some work to accomplish, and adding a quality NT via trade might be priority #1. Bring in Calais Campbell.

Keep in mind, with all the weapons I just talked about it will be more difficult for teams to load the box on us. That is part of the problem.

Watson is a walking injury. I give him two games and he is out for the season again. Reed has the dropsies and had one good year in college and it wasnt his last, he goes missing in games. Golden isnt using the speed he is supposed to have. He is smallish and I have yet to see him really run away from defenders, they are always on his back so where is this mysterious speed. Is Wicks even on the team? One game I swear he was not playing until the end he caught a pass.
These guys are over rated considering the talent on other teams.

Did you even watch Golden this game? He went over 100 yds total. And some deep throws from Love.

Hard to believe that Micah Parsons wasn’t held the entire game.

Apparently there are special rules for Micah and you are allowed to hold him all day and never get a penalty.

I think Nixon deserves a game ball too.

The one thing that bothers me is how DBs are not jumping short routes when our pass rush is causing them. I credit Bengals half time adjustments to short passes. Nixon was almost always in the hip pocket of receivers but can't remember him jumping any routes.

Ya your talking game ball from Cinci right? He has no ability to play corner. He is too slow, too small. Hey if he would just turn around and anticipate the ball he could knock them down or intercept. He is worthless.

Lots of crazy games to start the season. Packers at 3-1-1 are again on top of the NFC North and hold the 2nd best record in the NFC...to the 5-1 Buccaneers!

The unease among fans exists for most NFL teams this season.

Brian Branch from the Lions may be suspended by NFL for several games. He hit JuJu S-Schuster after the game and has already incurred other fines.

In an era when the NFL are leaping on a lot that seems pretty ticky tacky, if they don’t make a real example of Branch for what was frankly inexcusable (if not career endangering) then it will be impossible to take the league seriously. He needs a long enforced cooling off to learn his lesson and make sure his team does. Attempting to justify it afterwards should count further against him.

A lot of lip-service about protecting the shield. Nationally televised game devolves into a punk-ass cheap shot and brawl. I thought the petulant refusal to shake hands was a direct reflection on their coach, and their loser franchise...

Me too—I originally wanted Branch, but he’s a dirty punk. Looks like the big Dufus Campbell is coaching much like Schwartz used to — and Hutchinson took three steps to take a cheap shot on Mahomes. Nice coaching Campbell…

It was a nice win. We seem to be struggling right now to find ourselves. I really am fine with that as it seems to me that as the season goes on we should get better and better. We do not want to be at the top of our game at this point in the season.

We just need to continually improve and when the season is getting close to the end reach our high point and carry this through the playoffs. We will have many players back moving forward and hopefully will stay healthy.

A couple of things that we need going forward is getting some turnovers. With our pressure, we should be getting more of these and I have to believe this will happen. We need patience, which I admit is tough at times.

The other thing we need to develop as the season goes on is some sort of consistency from our special teams, in a good way, I might add. Plus, we need some type of break out such as returning a punt for a touchdown or at least a huge gain. This type of intangible will go a long way for us to continue winning games.

JJ is an amazing back. Give him just a little room and his quick feet and low gravity power will get it done. So very pleased Lafleur is making him more of a target in the pass O too. He's a very good receiver and a YAC machine.

Win is a win, but these trends have to change.
1) For the 3rd or 4th time this season, Love scrambles to an open field and slides SHORT of the 1st down. He has to have better awareness of the line to gain.

2) DB's need to get their heads turned, especially when we blitz. Ball comes out quick and we aren't even looking back.

3) Let's attack DOWN FIELD! Especially the middle of the field. You don't have to run to set the pass up. Passing can set the run up.

4) I love Tucker's INTENSITY, I wish it would rub off on some others, primarily LOVE.

I don't know how you can watch the Packers and come to the conclusion that they don't attack downfield often enough. Or that they don't use the middle of the field enough. This game was a great example of the pass setting up the run in the second half.

I was okay with Jordan Love sliding rather than diving into a head-on collision with a defender and quite possibly not getting the first down anyway.

He would have easily made the first down and wouldn’t have needed to dive headfirst.

Swap LaFleur for Love and maybe we would be better for it.

According to the Packers' team site Lucas Havrisik got an ACTUAL game ball for his efforts, lol. Jacobs is quoted as saying he was embarrassed to not know the kickers name after the game but that he thought the guy had been great.

My take. I dont thing Love is very bright. Again as soon as he tossed a pick, he stopped trying to go down field and went to a million screen passes that went pretty much no where or LeFLower called a tonn of runs to keep our D off the field.
Kind of ironic that we run for touch downs and LeFleur rarely calls for a pass into the end zone. Has to be something he doesnt like about Loves mental ability to cause that?
This team IMO is going nowhere fast. There is absolutely no, none nada, pass defense and our pass rush is pretty stagnant. Parsons has brought nothing to the table. LVN is making Gary and Parsons look bad.
Any team that see's the film will understand you willo make your money passing to whomever Nixon is covering. Do any packers even have an interception this year. Mackingly got several last year being in thye wrong place and catching errant passes is all. He's gone missing in action this year.
I see a long run of losses coming up. Watson will come back and trip and fall and be out for the season again. Golden if he is that fast isnt showing it, he is always covered by someone.
A lot not to like about yesterdays game. Had it gone two more minutes we may have lost to a team with a QB who's been there three days. Pathetic
