How Do the Packers Get Back to a NFC Championship Game?

Packers cornerback Charles Woodson celebrates the team's 2010 NFC Championship win over the Bears. It has been 15 years since the Packers won an NFC Championship game.

This upcoming weekend is one of the best of the year if you’re a neutral NFL fan. However for Green Bay Packers fans, it has become one that seems so close, yet so far away.

Between 2007 and 2020, the Packers appeared in six NFC championship games. Since 2007, the only other NFC teams with as many as four trips to the NFC championship are the 49ers (7) and Eagles (4). This year’s participants, the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams are both making their third appearance in an NFC Championship game since the 2013 season.

Despite having all of those appearances, it is definitely disappointing the Packers have only one Super Bowl appearance. There were three heartbreaking losses, two of which came in overtime (2007, 2014) and two losses that were total blowouts (2016, 2019).

Whoever wins this Sunday, Rams or Seahawks, it will make another NFC team to make a third Super Bowl since the Packers made their last appearance at the end of the 2010 season.

NFC Championship Wins Since 2010

Team Wins Years Champ Game Results SB Results
San Francisco 49ers 3 2012, 2019, 2023 Beat Atl, GB, Det Loss to Bal, KC (2)
Philadelphia Eagles 3 2017, 2022, 2024 Beat Min, SF, Wash Beat NE, KC; loss to KC
Seahawks 2 2013, 2014 Beat SF, GB Beat Den; loss to NE
Rams 2 2018, 2021 Beat NO, SF Loss to NE; Beat Cin
Packers 1 2010 Beat Chi Beat Pit
Giants  1 2011 Beat SF Beat NE
Panthers 1 2015 Beat Ariz Loss to Den
Falcons 1 2016 Beat GB Loss to NE
Bucs 1 2020 Beat GB Beat KC

Currently the Packers have gone the last 5 seasons without an appearance in the NFC Championship game. Both of their divisional playoff appearances in that time span were ended by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and 2023.

The drought of five seasons is just half of what the franchise went through during the Brett Favre years of 1998 to 2006 when the team failed to get to a game from the Super Bowl. And just like that stretch, much of its lack of success was due to regular-season shortcomings.

From 1998 to 2006, the Packers won the NFC North three times (2002, 2003, 2004), but they failed to have a first-round bye in all nine of those seasons. In this current run, the Packers haven’t won the NFC North since 2021, which means the last three years, all four of their playoff games were played on the road.

For the Packers to get back to playing on conference-championship weekend it will be important to retain the NFC North. Since the playoffs expanded to seven teams per conference, the only NFC championship game to have two teams that were not seeded first or second was in 2021. The team hosting the last four championship games had regular season records of 12-5 or better.

In the last three years under Jordan Love, the Packers have had too many losses in games where missed field goals, special teams mistakes and/or ill-timed turnovers were the difference between wins and losses.

If the 2026 Packers, who should have a 9th home game, are to get over the hump and get home playoff games and get back to an NFC Championship game, shoring up those mistakes in crucial spots in games will be important. Having a 13-win season puts the team in a much better position for the January run than 9 or 10 wins does.

How to Improve in 2026?

New Defensive Coordinator

Currently, the most pressing needs towards the 2026 season are to the coaching staff. Who replaces former defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley? Will it be an in-house promotion or will it be someone hired from another team? Will the new coordinator have past coordinator experience or will it be his first-time as a defensive coordinator? Does he prefer a 4-3 or 3-4 base defense?

Pending Free Agents

The Packers had a very successful draft in 2022. Brian Gutekunst hit on key contributors all throughout the draft with the following selections: LB Quay Walker, DL Devonte Wyatt, WR Christian Watson, C/G Sean Rhyan, WR Romeo Doubs, OT Zach Tom and DE Kingsley Enagbare. The only negative of such a good draft is all of those players hit free agency at the same time. So far only Wyatt, Watson and Tom have been extended or re-signed for at least 2026. Will the Packers keep any of them or move forward by replacing them with other free agents or in the draft? Quarterback Malik Willis was also a 2022 draft pick, so he will also be a free agent.

Improving the lines and secondary

The biggest weaknesses for the Packers in 2025 were the offensive line, interior defensive line and the cornerback position. Without a first-round pick, the Packers might not be able to draft a player to fill one of those needs right away (unless they hit on an impact player later in the draft). The improvement for these positions might have to come from within.

On the offensive line, Zach Tom will be back, youngsters Jordan Morgan and Anthony Belton are likely to be starters on Day 1 of the offseason. The major question mark will be at the center position with Rhyan as a free agent and veteran Elgton Jenkins a possible cap casualty.

On the defensive line, the defense has relied heavily on Wyatt, but he’s been unable to get through an entire 17-game season without injury. Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks will be entering their fourth years. The need is for more of a run-stuffing tackle to go next to Wyatt.

And maybe the biggest weakness on the roster is at cornerback. The group of Carrington Valentine, Keisan Nixon and Nate Hobbes is among the worst starting groups in the league. The three combined for just two interceptions this season and were all picked on at numerous times throughout the season. It is a position that Brian Gutekunst has not addressed enough in recent drafts, with Eric Stokes being the only cornerback he has drafted on Days 1 or 2 since the 2019 draft.

Stability, continuity, and rewarding those who serve their bosses with the zeal of a loyal lap dog are the keys to the Packer way.

And please never, ever utter the word COMPLACENCY ... even when MLF makes it clear that Rich Bisaccia will remain the Special Teams Coordinator.

I mean everyone knows that just sneaking into the playoffs and going one and done is not acceptable to anyone in Green Bay ... other than the Head Coach, GM, and President.

Q. How Do the Packers Get Back to a NFC Championship Game? A. They can't - not with this lot.

KenE. summed it up succinctly. I'll only add that current design-build of the team cannot meet the increased challenges of the playoffs. A new ceiling is required for this team to perform at a championship level. Unfortunately it appears that the Packers do not have the necessary management and coaches to build a better model. So status quo has been peddled as continuity and stability. Certainly a despairing time for Packers fans.

I’d rather ask a lot of other questions , but how does any GM in the NFL ignore the cornerback position in the draft since 2019 ? Corner is a premium position . NONE in the draft in the early rounds for the last 6 seasons ? Is it any wonder we have the worst starting corners in the NFL . Stokes never cut it .

I'm reminded of it being 15 years: When A.R. did not have a #2 WR to throw to and Adams was 2x or 3x covered in his MVP years and a certain CB pick-up and a certain 1st ballot HOF to be in Pittsburg because our GM was a savant at picking the real gems in the draft
.
I'm reminded of it being 15 years: When we cannot field a capable OL , DL , CB , DE group.....and we piss away our 1st round draft pick WR's Rook season who has the best hands on the team and do not design plays to use him at a high clip to help this team win when other WR's drop balls at an alarming rate.

I would have preferred both GM and HC be on a 1 year extension to get it straight so they can focus on the obvious deficiencies at hand before rewarding them prematurely.

Insane.....I'm getting too old to hope someone of authority in GB has the ability to see holes in positions of need and actually fill them in a timely enough fashion to make some post season noise while the Safety and LB core are in good shape and Kraft, Watson, Reed , Golden and Jacobs can help on Offense. That's ALL ON THE GM...

"Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes"
I get the unwavering loyalty you feel toward Gute.
But looking good on paper.
Shouldn't give anyone a free pass.
Being prepared will keep this team from failing.

Gute will always take away team chemistry.
The cap will, and has always been, the concern.
Achieving one goal, means sacrificing another.( for Balance)
And the repairs keep showing up.

If only MLF didn’t have to "Wing It”
Because of the band-Aids.

Steps to get to the show next year.

FIrst step
-This will be getting the coaches figured out. In the moment we know they need a new DC. We don't know how many other coaches they will need.

Second step
-They will be figuring out who they want to resign of their own players. I know Willis will be gone. I do not expect Rasheed Walker & Doubs back. They drafted Morgan and Golden in the 1st round to not sit the bench. They will step right in. Quay Walker will be interesting. I think it will depend on the new DC and what style of defense they want to run. I could see it going either way with him. Same with Enagbare. I could see it going either way. I do think there is a higher chance that they resign Rhyan to be the center. I thought he did well there.
To go with the free agents they have to make decisions on possible cap casualties. Gary and Jenkins are the 2 big ones that could be cut. They released Diggs, but they may bring him back.

Third step
-Will be Free Agency. I think they are going to let Walker, Doubs and Willis all go and they will want to get comp picks for them as they should be higher picks. I don't see them being very active in the free agency. I think they will look for players that were released or ones that won't count into the formula of comp picks. I do think they will probably look at DL and CB positions to help shore up the weakness.

Fourth Step
- The Draft. No first round pick. Which means they have to do their damage with the later round picks to offset the loss of the 1st round.

Between the draft and free agency, they need to add OL, DL, CB's. Those are the top priorities. After that they might look for more help at RB, TE, LB.
They have to build up the trenches. The Packers were very weak in both spots this year.
CB was the weakest spot on the roster. They need to overhaul that position.
I could see them looking at RB. Jacobs is a year older. Wilson and Brooks are nice backups. I love Lloyd but he hasn't proved to stay healthy. They could use a mid to late round RB. Would be nice to add someone with some speed and shiftiness.
TE, Kraft is coming off injury. Musgrave is a field stretcher. I like Whyle and he should do well with an offseason. But they may look to upgrade the backups. Trying to find someone that can fit in with Kraft.
LB will be interesting. Depending on how they want to play the position.

Fifth Step
-Health. They need to remain healthy, Plain and simple.
Last year Love got injured in the first game and basically was hurt most of the year. Same with Kenny Clark. Wyatt missed time. They also lost Jenkins in the playoff game and that destroyed the OL. They lost Alexander. They lost Watson to a torn ACL late in the year also.
This year we know what happened.
We are in desperate need of good health. And we will need stronger depth for when the inevitable happens.

You can hire the best defensive coordinator in football.
You can rebuild the offensive line, the defensive line, and the secondary.
You can dominate free agency and absolutely nail the draft.

And when all of that is done, when the roster is finally good enough to win in January, the outcome will still hinge on one immutable fact:

At the exact moment the game requires fast thinking, creative thinking, or any thinking at all, our head coach will be staring at his laminated play sheet like it’s written in Sanskrit.

Talent wins you games.
Coaching wins you championships.

We're biting off more than we can chew here at this time. There are too many variables yet to be determined, and going from theory (for example, we need help at this and that position or possibly switching defensive alignments again) to reality is not as easy as it is made to sound. The Packers are going to have to go against their grain and draft prospects that are ready to contribute and actually play them instead of the usual protracted process. Then there is the matter of getting all three units to perform at a high level in clutch moments when the game is on the line. It all takes work and a change in the coaching methodology in many cases.

By the way, it might help to be able to win a playoff game first before we consider loftier ambitions.

splitpea1, "The Packers are going to have to go against their grain and draft prospects that are ready to contribute and actually play them instead of the usual protracted process." I couldn't agree more with this. We need to fast track the "develop" part of "draft and develop". It has been unfortunate that several of the Packers' rookies have dealt with (in some cases multiple) early season injuries that have derailed many of their starts, but hopefully, this year will be better (crosses fingers, throws salt over shoulder, knocks on wood). GPG!

Points is the answer to returning to the NFCCG. First the Packers need a very much improved OL. They need an OL that can dominate opponents DLs in the playoffs when they will face better defensive teams especially in the NFCCG and the SB. A dominant OL enables the offense to stay on the field and score points.
The Packers have the skill players on offense. They need an excellent OL to dominate when they get to the big games late in the playoffs.

Second they need need a better DL. A DL that can stop the run and generate pressure consistently on the opposing QB. Come the playoffs the Packers will face the better QBs and they need to pressure those QBs into mistakes and sack them during the game. They also need better CBs. Nixon is not a legitimate NFL #1 CB. Her may be the Packers #1 CB but that is irrelevant. He would probably be a #3 or #4 CB on a top defensive team in the league. Tackling must be improved on the defense overall. Again Nixon stepping out of the way to allow the Bears RBto score a TD in a playoff game should result in him having been released by the Packers immediately after the game. If he played for Lombardi he'd be gone by now. Again it's about points. Keep the opponent from scoring and the Packers will win games and return and win the NFCCG.

Third, the Packers need a much better kicker than McManus. If you want to reach the NFCCG and beyond the Packers need a kicker who will put the points on the board when he is expected to make the FGs and PATs. The kicker cannot cost the team 7 points in any playoff game as McManus did against the Bears. He should have been chucked along with Nixon immediately after the Bears game. Again points matter.

Fourth, accountability. The Packers need to send a message to the team. To do that effectively they should have chucked Nixon and McManus by now. What message does it send to the rest of the team that those 2 players are still on the team? Where is the accountability?
Speaking of accountability, where is the accountability for MLF and Gute for finishing the season 0-5 and in an extremely embarrassing fashion? Again what is the message to the players and to the fans?

Fifth, while it is too soon to predict the 2026 season I don't think that the Packers can make it back to the NFCCG in 2026. Implementing a new defense with a new DC and building a dominant OL will likely take at least until 2027 and maybe beyond especially without first round draft picks in '26 and '27 plus the Packers cap situation. The rebuild following Rodgers departure has been a failure up to this point and much more needs to done and redone such as the aforementioned OL, DL and CB rooms. Time will tell. Thanks, Since '61

Yes—the oline and a better CB situation. I also agree about the kicker. I believe we had, during McManus’s absence, found our kicker (Havrisik). But we relegated him to 2nd string…and it cost us.

A year ago every one was singing the praises of McManus saving the Packers kicking. He was fine until the leg injury this past season and supposedly that issue was resolved by the end of the season.

It would be nice to know what went wrong in the Chicago playoff with him. But 1265 Lombardi Ave. will treat that as a state secret. But they do know whether the injury had anything to do with his off target kicking or whatever else was going on that night so they won't be reacting with a quick trigger on him.

What did trading for Parson's get us? He got hurt, we have no first round picks for 2 years, and we have salary cap issues. Parsons will not be ready at the beginning of the season. I expect him to miss half the season.

So Parsons is all we need in your mind.

So anyone can get hurt at anytime. What did it get us? Without Parsons, Packers don't make the playoffs at all. Packers have two first round draft picks on the DL and neither is worth having. I'll take my chances with a proven first rounder that is one of the best D players in the NFL. And I'd sure as HELL trade Gary and Van Ness for Parsons. This GM would need five to six first round picks to get even one right.

That's an uncomfortable truth. At the end of the day, we didn't go any farther with Parsons than we did the year before without him.

Is Parsons a good player? Oh, yes. Very much so. One of the better defenders in the league. He'll absolutely help us. We like to run a rotation at DE, a 60-40 split or so, and we use four guys. He'll definitely help next year, probably more than any first round pick might have.

George Allen, who was a pretty good coach, traded away his picks for guys that he knew could play. I do sometimes think that if you can trade away 4th or 5th round picks for a proven player....even if he's JAG...you might be ahead to do that.

The Packers plan on getting to the NFC Championship game. Keep doing what you have been doing that has got you a 7th seed and lose in the playoffs. Keep the GM that seems to be just another GM. He is good but not great. Keep the HC that is overwhelmed come game day because he wears too many hats and does not seem to have his team ready. Now he has to hire a new DC and we all know he will interview about 20 candidates and by the time he hires one all the good DCs will be hired somewhere else. Keep his staff because we know they will not create waves and go along with whatever MLF wants. We will not see the NFC Championship game for years. We probably will not be the NFC North Champions for as long.

They should have fired Gute mid season and hired a good GM and go back to the old structure this way the GM would be ready to hire a new HC when they fired MLF. The Packers will be at best an average team for years.

Until the fans of the so called "Titletown" actually care about "Titles" rather than beating and just being better than their divisional rival then maybe that will also help the culture.

The same way we always tell bears fans A win against packers is there Superbowl, well its also the same for us with the way this organization is going. ( Regular season apparently is our Superbowl).

No matter how much we go about calling the bears, lions or the vikings trash, the honest truth is - Any coach that gets either of those 3 teams to a SUPERBOWL (Not even win, Just get there), means they have accomplished more than MLF and Jordan Love EVER WILL. Thats the sad truth.

I think that games are won by points, and that teams who have offenses that can move the ball and score points win games. And that's why I think that Offense wins in the NFL, and that the offenses who can get it done in the clutch against good defenses prevail.

So, I'm trying to improve the offense, and since I feel pretty good about our skill position guys, I'd really like to improve the Oline. We have 2 FAs and a probable salary cap casualty on the Oline and this would be as good of an opportunity as we can get to improve the line.

Can we get an offensive lineman that's better than Rhyan or Walker? I think we can. And that saves money while improving the unit. We could also sign a FA, like we did with Banks last year. Those two moves alone would improve the Oline and save quite a bit of money. We'd save even more if we released Jenkins, but then we have to replace him.

We had two persistent problems on offense last year. First, we had way more trouble converting short yardage than you'd like, which ended possessions for us. And second, we didn't seem to be able to run out the clock when we had a good lead, because we couldn't get first downs, sometimes because we couldn't convert 3rd and short. So the two persistent problems are related, and they're both best solved by upgrading the talent on the Oline.

The season before last the Packers went on the road and beat both the Rams and Seahawks and quite impressively. Less than two years later they're playing for the championship ticket to the Super Bowl and the Packers are already two weeks into their off season.
