Hello Wisconsin: Maintaining Defensive Momentum
Who's going to carry the torch with Jeff Hafley moving on to Miami?
By TimBackes

Well, to my minor surprise, Jeff Hafley did end up getting a head coaching job this week. I suppose it’s not a surprise that the Dolphins hired a GM from Green Bay only to have that GM immediately seek out a coach from Green Bay as well.
I’m hopeful that Hafley will have some success in Miami; it’s been a rough couple decades overall for the Dolphins, and Hafley is a likeable guy who clearly connects with his players; Packers have universally spoken highly of him.
Now, that being said, while Hafley did produce some improvements on the defensive side of the ball for the Packers (hard to get much worse than Joe Barry), his defenses never quite reached the level of “great.” There were certainly flashes at times of that potential, and I think given more time and with a full complement of healthy players, Hafley could have done more with this unit. But I don’t see the loss of Hafley as being something the team can’t weather.
If nothing else, Hafley produced some momentum on that side of the ball that the team hasn’t seen in quite some time. Not since 2014 had the Packers really had a defense that could help win them games with some level of reliability, and not since 2010 had they had a truly, consistently strong defense.
While the Packers didn’t get to 2010 level yet, I think it’s fair to say they achieved 2014 level under Hafley. So whoever the Packers hire next, they need to make sure that momentum continues.
The next defensive coordinator will certainly benefit from the returns of Micah Parsons and Devonte Wyatt. It is also going to be critical that Brian Gutekunst provide cornerbacks who are capable of being starters at the NFL level rather than a team full of nickel and dime caliber players.
This last point, I think, is why it’s not a surprise that the Packers have started their defensive coordinator search with guys who are primarily known for coaching defensive backs. Christian Parker, for example, who was on the Packers’ coaching staff six years ago, is currently the DBs coach and pass game coordinator for the Eagles, and he’s been a name that has been popping up in a lot of defensive coordinator searches.
The Packers also scheduled an interview with Daronte Jones, a pass game coordinator and DBs coach for the Vikings who has defensive coordinator experience at the college level with LSU. Jones is also considered an up-and-comer who has produced some good results out of his players at the NFL level.
Finally, the Packers have scheduled an interview with Jonathan Gannon, the former head coach of the Cardinals who got his job after impressing with his Philadelphia Eagles defense that helped the team to a Super Bowl berth several years ago while eighth in total defense and second in takeaways. Gannon also previously served as a defensive backs coach with the Colts. Gannon in particular is likely to be in high demand.
As of the time of this writing (Wednesday morning), these were the only confirmed interview requests so far.
A coach with defensive backs experience makes sense, because one of two things is going to happen:
- The Packers will enter 2026 with the same collection of ragtag players and will need a coordinator who can get the most out of the group
- The Packers will enter 2026 with a bunch of young guys from the draft who need to grow up quickly and be put in the best possible positions to succeed
I don’t envision a scenario in which the Packers attack the market for veteran DBs, so scenario B seems most likely to me here.
Wisconsin Beer of the Week

I’ve been hearing some good things about Public Brewing Company based out of Kenosha, so when I saw some of their beers available at my local Woodman’s I figured I’d give one a shot. There was one that looked particularly interesting to me: a milk stout that was supposed to mimic the flavor of chocolate-covered oranges. It’s called Orange Door Hinge.
I gotta say, it hits! It’s your basic sweet, easy drinking Milk stout–but not too sweet. The chocolate and orange are both mellow, and the beer comes in at 5.6 percent ABV. The brewery describes it as “a refreshing stout that’s loaded with Orange aroma and chocolatey goodness.”
Definitely recommend; the flavors work together really well and I haven’t had a whole lot of other beers that have gone for this flavor palate. It works surprisingly well in that milk stout genre.
I’m looking forward to trying other PBC beers, and may have to make a trip down to Kenosha to check out their physical space.
The Buffalo Bills are doing it all wrong
I have gone on record stating that if I were making the calls, I would most likely not be bringing Matt LaFleur back for another season in Green Bay.
So I was intrigued when I heard the Buffalo Bills ultimately decided to part ways with Sean McDermott, a decision that was probably overdue by a couple years. McDermott’s teams have an eerie resemblance to LaFleur’s in that they continually find heartbreaking ways to lose playoff games they should win. With McDermott, though, the issue is even more severe because they have maybe the league’s best player taking snaps and have had even higher stakes for longer than the current iteration of the Packers.
I was mildly surprised the Bills did decide to pull the trigger after the divisional round, but not stunned. What did stun me, and what I cannot defend, is their decision to not just retain general manager Brandon Beane, but PROMOTE him!
Over and over we hear about how the Bills have to get Josh Allen some help so he doesn’t have to be superman. This has been a common refrain each year in the playoffs. Fans and analysts alike have pointed the finger at Beane being one of the most responsible figures for the Bills’ annual disappointments in January. So why, then, does Beane get to stay and choose the next head coach? Why does he get PROMOTED while McDermott gets all of the blame?
It’s absolutely insane, and it’s one of the reasons why we’re fortunate to have the Packers’ ownership structure. Here, Beane’s survival is almost certainly due to being cozy enough with Bills owner Terry Pegula, and the billionaire owner gets to call the shots.
If you’re going to move on from McDermott, then it makes sense to get rid of the guy who’s made his job far more difficult than it needed to be. Beane has shown little in the last several years of team building to earn the kind of trust that apparently Pegula has in him.
It’s hard for me to believe, with Beane still calling the shots, that Buffalo is going to be in any better position to win it all next season.
But at least they’ve still got Josh Allen… for now.
Around the NFC North
As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.
- The CHICAGO BEARS finally had the horseshoe forcibly removed from their rectum, but not before getting one final “wtf” play from Caleb Williams at the end of the fourth quarter. The bizarre thing about Williams is he can look downright unplayable for long stretches of a game and then make these bizarre, magical throws that nobody has any business completing. He’s going to need to get significantly more accurate if this offense is going to see greater consistency in the passing game next season. For now, let’s all just thank the stars that this team is finally eliminated and that Ben Johnson can keep his shirt on.
- The DETROIT LIONS hired Drew Petzing, the former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator, to be their next offensive coordinator. This is AFTER interviewing Mike McDaniel, one of the hottest offensive names on the market. The move to hire Petzing has been widely panned by analysts and fans alike; his Arizona offenses consistently underperformed, and Kyler Murray routinely took steps backward to the point where he’s probably run out the clock on his time in Arizona. If you’re a Packer fan, you’ve got to be a huge fan of this hire.
- The MINNESOTA VIKINGS are desperately trying to hold on to Brian Flores, whose contract as defensive coordinator expired after this season. Flores is in talks for multiple head coach openings and would certainly be a highly sought after defensive coordinator as well, but the Vikings have maintained their intent to bring him back. Beats me why they didn’t extend his contract sooner. If Flores departs Minnesota, suddenly that Vikings defense feels a whole lot scary. Maybe Flores should come on over to Green Bay, where he would have better players and a stronger chance of winning a title.
Mr. Backes’s “This or That”
Every day I put a different “this or that” poll up on my whiteboard and have students leave tallies throughout the day. I then compile this information and post it here for laughs.
- NFL defeated college football
- Semester two defeated semester one
- Soup defeated salad
- Assignments on paper defeated assignments on chromebook
Conference Championship Picks
Well, I got both AFC games wrong last week, but both NFC games correct. We’ll see if I can make it two for two this week!
AFC Championship: Patriots over Broncos
Everyone and their mother is expecting this to be a relatively smooth victory for the Patriots, given the season-ending ankle injury to Denver quarterback Bo Nix. But in January football, everything gets just a bit harder. The Pats are still playing on the road in a tough environment. They’re still a young team with very little playoff experience (though so are the Broncos).
Ultimately, though, the loss of the quarterback is too much to overcome. One has to think the fans could be taken out of the equation as soon as the Broncos fall behind; they see the writing on the wall with that injury coming into play.
As much as we’d all like to see new teams getting into the Super Bowl, this Patriots team is entirely disconnected from the Brady era; not a single player on the roster ever played a game with him. While the Patriots did benefit from a weak schedule this season, they also imposed their will on team after team. They’ve earned it.
Patriots 27, Broncos 13
NFC Championship: Seahawks over Rams
I have a ton of respect for Sean McVay as a coach and everything he’s accomplished with the Rams over his tenure with the team, but all signs point to the Seahawks being a team of destiny. Their absolute obliteration of the 49ers was not something I expected at all–I figured they’d win, but not in such insanely convincing fashion. The Rams have a few more offensive pieces, but this defense is completely legit, and the special teams and offense make more than enough plays to complement it.
Put it this way – the Rams were barely able to get past a far inferior Chicago defense. Things would have to get silly for me to believe they could take down the Seahawks in their home stadium.
Seahawks 30, Rams 20
A Super Bowl XLIX rematch? I’m all for it.

"how the Bills have to get Josh Allen some help so he doesn’t have to be superman"
How many years in a row did we say this exact thing with Aaron Rodgers's name in place of Josh Allen's? Josh came out of nowhere to become one of the NFL's best. He may never find his true destiny unless he plays somewhere else.

"Josh came out of nowhere to become one of the NFL's best. "
He was a high draft pick (7th) in the draft that also produced Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Lamar Jackson. My recollection is that most of the questions surrounding him dealt with the offense he played with in college.

dobber,
I don't know about you and/or Steve, but I watched the Bills press conference yesterday when reporters literally grilled the Owner and GM of the Bills, and many, if not most reporters seemed to defend McDermott.
It was the one of the biggest displays of 'Damage Control' I've ever seen and IMO the owner came across as a real Dik!
He threw numerous people under the bus and pretended to play the 'We gotta make Josh a winner' card while probably making the guy feel responsible for the firing.
It was fun to watch.

Wouldn't say out of nowhere.
He was number 1 on more than a few Draft boards that year.
His first year he struggled, and then Brian Daboll helped him emerge.

Josh Allen's combined playoff stats for all his games are as follows:
Games Played: 15
Passing Yards: 2,945 yards
Touchdowns: 29
Interceptions: 6
Fumbles Lost: 14
Passer Rating: 95.6
20 turnovers in 15 games

Stafford had a lackluster game, playing the Bears in the divisional round. I think he steps it up, a couple notches, and puts together a winning performance against the Hags, in the NFCCG. I also feel the Pats cruise, to a relatively easy win, over Denver. Nix playing here, would have been the difference maker, that could have propelled the Broncos into the SuperBowl. So, I have the Rams and the Pats in the SuperBowl, and the Rams winning it all.

Stafford was cold. His receivers, particularly Nacua were freezing and miserable. whoever or whatever convinced him to eschew layers and look like a tough guy did him a huge disservice. That kid did not want to be out there, and it showed.

I think the Rams beat Seattle as well. They played two close games, and the Rams had the better of Seattle at their place into the middle of the third quarter without Davante Adams. I think we see a Stafford-Adams show, Darnold folds, and the Rams win 31-24.

Seattle is a very tough place to play. I have no confidence in Darnold, but that defense might not need him to do anything save not turn it over 3 times. Throw pressure at LA until Stafford says, "I'm too old for this shit"...

2 of their 3 losses came at home, but admittedly none since mid-October. The Rams almost got them there a month ago.

As much as I would like to see the Rams win for Adams sake, after all the Packers could not take him to the SB, I do not see the Rams beating the Seahawks. I will admit that it would be great to see Adams catch a TD pass in the endzone as time expires to get the win for the Rams.

Good stuff as always, Tim.
McDermott has had several LaFleur-like late game brain farts that cost the Bills important games. Most notably, the decision to kick off through the end zone with 13 seconds left against the Chiefs in the 2022 AFC Divisional game, then allowing the Chiefs to tie the game and later win in overtime. I'm sure allowing Denver to drop 33 on his team didn't help.
There's plenty of blame to go around in Buffalo, and Beane getting promoted doesn't make sense.

I don't know, Green Bay decided to fire McCarthy mid-season and look at how successful they've been since...
Buffalo may have been right, I have a hard time believing they didn't make that call without the input of their quarterback. Also, their owner is a billionaire, so he must be really smart, right?

And to top it all of to see him and the owner going on about how drafting Coleman was the coaches wish, and that Beane just went with it to make the coaches happy. Umm, Coleman is still on the roster. You are acting like the guy is the ultimate bust. Which ok if you think that, but maybe don't have him on the roster when you talk about him.

To me, Beane has done a less impressive job than Gute. So I sympathize with the frustration of their fans on that score. On the other hand, they faced the need to change at least, and of better defining who is really pulling the shots more clearly going forward.

Three different DC's under MLF and all of them called a soft zone scheme with minimal blitzing, whether run, or pass blitz regardless of what kind of coach they claimed to be. I often wonder if MLF get's into his DC's ears about how he wants them to coach? Maybe it's the personal Gute has provided? I'm not accusing, but rather curious why our defenses look so similar from one DC to the next. Hafley was better at it than the other two, but still, at times, I couldn't tell the difference. Hopefully this doesn't repeat itself for the 4th time?

I agree with you...in fact, Barry even continued this and played a fair dose of man to start in 2021 and Stokes had his best Packer year as a rookie playing it. Barry then morphed into more prevent zone and Stokes struggled a bit and really flopped playing it when he got healthy.
Ironically, Stokes had a very good 2025 season...with the Raiders, no less.

They may seem similar because they have to base the D on the personnel they have and they can't turn the whole team over in a season or two.
3-4 and 4-3 with the edge rushers being LBs in the first and down in the second look allot the same and the biggest change in the backfield was the loss of the shutdown corner requiring help that used to be able to concentrate on one side of the field to being spread thin. You started to see it while J. Alexander was being hurt most of the time.

Just to put a few numbers for comparisons the last 4 years.
2025 the Packers blitz% was 20.4% which ranked them 24th. Their hurry % was 5th. They were 21st in sacks.
2024 the Packers blitz% was 17.3% which ranked them 31st. Their hurry % was 12th. They were 8th in sacks.
2023 the Packers blitz% was 29.3% which ranked them 10th. Their hurry % was 8th. They were 16th in sacks.

I really like the slate of possible coordinators coming in, especially Al Harris and Daronte Jones. Jones is my favorite so far. One DB/passing game coordinator missing from the list is everyone's favorite Jim Leonhard, but Denver's still playing and his window is narrowed. We'll see if LaF goes back to the well there...it would indicate that the previous courting of Leonhard really was a cordial exchange. I also wouldn't be surprised to see LaF make a call and move on.
BEARS--there was a lot of luck in their corner this season and Williams is an odd duck. Someone's going to give Al Harris a DC job and that's a blow to their DB room. There's room for a lot of regression in 2026, but if they draft well and use what little bit of cash they'll have well, they'll be near the top of the division for a couple years.
VIKINGS--brought back Flores, which is a great move for them. I don't think he gets a HC job yet--his feud with the league is still a problem--but it will happen soon. They're going to need to tear down a lot of that roster in MIN and start over. Good luck to Christian Ponder 2.0--who will only win the QB job next fall over a FA vet because O'Connell needs to try to show he's a QB guru.
LIONS--I was happy when they signed Petzing to run the offense. I predict Campbell will be calling plays by November again. If Decker retires--and I think he will--that OL takes another hit and the offense becomes increasingly scattershot. Their CBs are still not good.

I saw someone made a video showing how easily they could have been something like 3-14 on the season. How they seriously lucked out a lot this season. Don't get me wrong they made the plays to win the games, but they definitely had a lot of luck on their side.
What will be interesting is to see how teams respond to them with a full season of Johnson and Williams together.

Very much like the Vikings in 2024. Do you think anyone regretted not bringing Sam Darnold back, especially for less than 1/2 of what top starting QB's get. At the very least, if you really don't want him, resign him and trade him for? At the very least nultiple picks including a first.

Not seeing the reason LaFleur would not even consider Leonard...just because he decided to stay in Wisconsin?
By all accounts the two of them got along famously. Jim took the interview request out of respect for the Packers and LaFleur and expected it to be a short call. It stretched into over two days and LaFleur did such a good job selling him, Jimmy asked for more time to discuss a move with his family before sitting down to talk contract details.
Seems to me it was a solid relationship building process. And the Madison magnet is now moot.

Hafley -
I really like what Hafley brought to GB. From day 1 it was clear that he was destined to be a HC. Hafley did a great job turning our defense around. In looking at just scoring defense, from 23 to 24 they went from 10th to 6th. However in 25 they went from 6th to 11th. He has led a good defense here. And I do think Hafley will turn around the Dolphins. I believe he is a great coach.
Now for us it will be interesting to see how we replace him. Who we replace him with. One thing so far that I have noticed as a common theme with the guys we have seen so far is they all have backgrounds as DB coaches.
These are the reported guys that they have interviewed so far.
Jonathan Gannon - Assistant DB coach from 2014-2017, DB coach from 2018-2020.
Al Harris - DB coach 2020-2025.
Christian Parker - DB coach 2013-2016 (college), DB coach 2021-2025
Daronte Jones - 2010-2015 DB coach (college). DB coach 2016-2020, 2023.
We have seen reports that they want to interview Jim Leonhard as well. And we will see who else they bring in. But the theme seems to be about the DB's.

I’m sorry, MAINTAINING defensive momentum?
The Packers fell from 6th in scoring D in 2024 to 11th in 2025 and the DTs (outside of Wyatt) and CBs were ass in 2025.
Even with mighty Micah the momentum on D was downward last season, with far fewer sacks and turnovers.
Oh, and the D is about to lose Gary, Enagbare, and Q. Walker, there is no $ to add free agents, and GB has no first round pick. The best hope for 2026 is addition by subtraction of underperforming (Gary) or just plain bad ones (Carrington).
Big challenge ahead for the new Defensive Coordinator to create positive momentum with a depleted roster.

I don't know, Ken...the defense's plunge in the stats coincided with the loss of Wyatt and Parsons...and release on the pressure valve. With both, they had a playoff defense. I know, I know...the CBs. Yet the Safeties are very good and the upfront pressure took it off the CBs to a great degree.
Parsons, Wyatt, maybe Van Ness, Cooper, maybe Walker, Hopper, McDuffie, Bullard, Williams and X as the bow to wrap up the package is a nice gift to the new DC.
That's 10 all pro/good NFL players to staff the 11 starters on D.

January 23, 2026 at 01:13 pm
Ken, the 2 biggest needs in the 2025 draft for us were CB & DT, in whatever order. The Packers ignored those needs and picked 2 WRs and 1 OL with our first 3 picks. The DT need was even bigger when we lost K Clark. Granted the top 4 DTs in the draft came off the board before we picked, but there were a lot of solid CBs available @ #22 and 4 really good ones still there when we overdrafted Belton in the 2nd round.
If ever there was a year not to pick a WR in the first round, 2025 was it. The best move would have been to trade back for 2-3 more picks and select a CB where we moved back to. In fact since the only WR we should have picked in round 1, Egbuka-WR-Ohio State, was gone before #22, we could have still got Jayden Higgin-WR-Iowa State with a move to the end of the first or early 2nd. He had 40+ catches & 6 TDs last year.
When we lost Clark and Wyatt, the cupboard was bare for Hafley on the D-line and we couldn't recover. Hafley is a top-notch winner and I wish he was still here.

GB needs 2 starting DL...2 starting DE's....2 starting CB's on that side of the ball. That will be the Genesis of wether this team can perform against post season contenders.....Until ALL that happens...GB is not going to move on in the playoffs.
Gary-gone, LT-gone, Jenkins-gone, Kicker-gone, Doubs-gone
The OL needs improved by a few OL...maybe a Vet TE would be good...it needs less to be absolutely dominant in the pass or run game...but the Defense has to stop somebody or it will be like the 5 game skid all next season.

Yeah, well that DC stint at LSU was not a highlight on his resume...he was not rehired after a 6-6 season where his defenses only had 3 games giving up less than 20 points.
How about an assistant HC, DB coach and pass game coordinator who had amazing success as a college DC?

I hope to hell we don't wait too long and miss out on our top choice for DC. I like Leonard as well, but waiting to interview him while the Broncos are still alive may lose us everyone else and maybe Leonard as well. I would hate to "settle for the 4th or 5th best option.

The Rams are the LAST team that Sam Darnold wants to see. The Rams got him sent packing from Minnesota (because Minnesota, although they said all the right things, never really bought in on him) and the Rams picked him four times in one of the regular season games this year. I see Darnold play and he's still the wild card. That Seattle defense is a true Super Bowl caliber D. Reminds me of Buc's D and the Eagle's D that beat Mahomes. They're fast, so the Rams OL better come up big for Stafford. I hope it turns out to be just as good if not better than the two regular season games.
Should be two good games this Sunday.
