no pass rush, Goff going with the same check down and short pass over the middle all game...better beat the Seahawks and Vikes or there wont be any playoffs..

We only have 4 1st round picks on the defensive line, how can you expect them to generate a pass rush when all-world backup LT Dan Skipper was playing?

Playoffs? The Pack will almost certainly make the playoffs.

Then the Pack may even snatch a win on the road before inevitably bowing out short of a Super Bowl, once again.

The 0-4 record against Minny, Detroit, and Philly pretty much exposes the Pack for what it is, a team that beats mediocre to bad teams but does not beat good teams.

Rinse, repeat, and get ready for more of the same in 2025.

0-4 against those teams, and fortunate to catch the Rams with both starting WR's, and damn good WR's out, as well as the 49ers with a guy that won the "QB the 49ers offense for a game" under center. So catching the Lions as decimated as they are was was just another in that line.

"Almost certainly..." Yes, they should make the playoffs (they better), but I myself wouldn't call it a lock.

Quay needs to quickly recognize if it’s a run, stay where you are; if a pass, hightail it back 10-12 yards. Maybe watch some Brian Urlacher tape.

Give the Packers a lot of credit for playing this well with the injuries (though Lions had more).

Can someone explain how you send pressure but play a soft zone to give them an easy catch? There is no time for the deep ball so might as well play tight man when pressuring. Every game, their getting carved up with short passes over the middle.

And how could they not have had a better answer for all the pressure the Lions brought? Screens short dump offs.

A lot to be proud of but is the team being held back by coaches?

It’s starting to feel that way. They’ve plateaued at this frustrating, inconsistent place where they’re good but not great. They’ll win more than they lose, but it’s usually a struggle. The pieces are there, but somebody needs to put them together.

With a beat up secondary you pretty much lose nothing by dialing up blitz packages almost every other play. When they rattled Goff it worked. Why back off? The LB's can't really cover very well anyway. So make them more useful by blitzing them even more. The soft stuff may prevent a big play, but I'd take my chances on a lower percentage big throw than a bunch of higher percentage short to midrange. They just ate up clock and scored anyway. The front isn't getting it done all season. Hafley better think of some more creative ways to get to the QB.

What was that in the first half?

Josh Jacobs is a stud. I'm glad I have him in Fantasy Football. Seriously I was shocked they didn't run the ball better.

Christians Watson fumbled and got called for a pick on a TD to Jacobs. I still don't think that was a illegal pick. They only showed one reply I can remember and he didn't run out of his way to hit the defender. Herbstreit is fucking horrible, just one and on about the Lions.

I HATE Honolulu Blue.

"I still don't think that was a illegal pick. They only showed one reply I can remember and he didn't run out of his way to hit the defender."

In fact, how did they subjectively determine that the defender didn't run into Watson intentionally to throw him off his route?

The Packers have talent, they can be opportunistic, they have flashes of brilliance. But until they can stay clean and disciplined for four quarters together, they’re not going to be able to beat a team like the Lions.

And they are that good. It took sixty years, but they finally have their shit together. We need to find another gear to match what they’re doing.

That said, it was still one hell of a game. Go Pack Go.

I wasn't able to watch all of the game due to family responsibilities, but when I heard the announcers say that we won the toss & gave the ball to the Lions, I wondered, "What happened to all gas?" Then when I heard the announcers say such things as the Packers D was playing "soft coverage" and "zone," I just grew more & more frustrated since "Haven't we tried that before?" Then while I watched the Packers usually run it up the gut on 1st down on their last long drive and not really do play action (most of the time), I wondered, "Everyone knows it's a run. Why keep doing the same thing & not get hardly any yards?" The big reason why the Packers lost is coaching. Detroit is better coached simple as that. We have a very good base of talent, but the coaching mistakes drive me crazy.

The Packers defense wasted/gave away an excellent game by the offense. The offense did everything tha they needed to do to win the game, especially in the 2nd half. The defense just couldn't get off the field or make a stop when they needed to. The Lions went 6 out of 7 on 4th downs!!! Middle of the field open all game.

Hafley's defense has been better than the past but not against good teams. Could not stop the Eagles, Vikings or the Lions. The division title is gone. All that's left is playoff seeding. Mini-bye then bring on Seattle. Thanks, Since '61

Can't beat Playoff quality teams, where are we going. Can't stop the penalties and can't ever get defensive stops when we need them. At least we found a kicker - maybe we could work out a trade for Zadarius before the Big Show starts. We kept the wrong Smith, now we have none.

The Lions had an excellent game plan and executed it well. The short passes in the middle of the field killed us, and I'm sure their coaching staff knew they could get away with it repeatedly. It didn't help that we lost two safeties to injury and that Cooper was unavailable.

Really that last drive on defense was just awful. I would have much rather seen Hafley take a couple of chances to disrupt things rather than sit back with the same predictable approach and allow an easy march down the field.

Campbell was right to go for it in the end with that defensive alignment. With Cox, McDuffie, and Anderson on the right side, handing the ball off and plowing through them wasn't even much of a gamble if it meant icing the game. So I don't know what those broadcasters were talking about.

Our first two draft picks need to be a Godzilla for the D-line and a top flight CB who is ready to start.

I didnt get to see the game but listened to some guy relate the game as it was happening on You tube.
Sounded to me that the Packers out played the Lions the whole game? I mean the Lions Defense is awful. The only way they keep winning is scoring more then their opponents which sounds like DUH but I mean its up to the offense to win games, the defense is giving up big plays and lots of them.
I'm surprised the Packers lost but they let that big drive happen in the end and that was it.
From what I was hearing the Lions were having a great passing game and the Pack seemed to be stuffing the run, they werent running all over the packers so the D was doing well.
Ya pass defense is pretty bad because we cant cover one on one. It has to be the Barry zone of confusion still be played to be honest.
Oh well, the Lions arent going anywhere with the key injuries they have and the poor coaching decisions by the HC. He is a doofus of the highest order IMO

The Detroit screen passes were killers all night. Although they had linemen illegally downfield on them that were never called.

And then they call the offensive pass interference on watson at a crucial time.

With that said, GB will not outscore good teams with their impotent pass rush.

I will rewatch this carefully today, but my impression during the game is that Goff was getting rid of the ball to an open receiver before our pass rush could reach home.

I don't subscribe to the 'impotent' pass rush theory; I think if we improved our coverage a little bit, we'd see more sacks. But we were out there last night without Alexander, as usual, and without Williams and Bullard. And when we blitzed, that just created more openings.

I think most sacks are coverage sacks, to one extent or another. If we improve coverage, our pass rush will be more effective.

Pass opens up the run, run opens up the pass. Goff took the open pass and moved the chains. I don't know how anyone cannot see the lack of pass rush. The Bears have one of the worst OL's in the NFL. Packers got one sack where a bad Patriots team got 9. It isn't there. They are average and ineffective at best.

Detroit with the #1 seed and the bye
Philly at #2 v.Washington at #7

What an f-ing joke. With 4:30 left, the Packers score with a Jordan Love pass to Josh Jacobs. But no, the NFL has decreed that Detroit has to win. So the officials confer. What to call? Packers receiver Christian Watson (9) collided with a Detroit DB on the play. Big surprise. They could have called pass interference because the Detroit DB impeded Watson's route. But they call OFFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE. So the Packers have to settle for an FG to tie (not win) the game. And Detroit then moves downfield to win by their own FG. Get your bets in for next week, sheep. But remember, Detroit is the chosen team this year.

I'm heartened by the fact that it was a walk off FG. I stand by my comments during the week that a win or close loss would retain the faith in this group.

I know others have lamented the lack of middle field coverage, however the loss of Alexander and Cooper (pre-game) and Williams and Bullard (intra-game) exposed this.

The inability to get pressure on Goff was telling. Hats off to the Lions O-line, they aren't slouches, but the Packers D needs to get pressure more reliably. Love was under way more pressure than Goff.

I don't know how many games now I've watched the Packers lose a game by playing soft zone late in the 4th. Time to go contrarian on the analytics and defend more aggressively when the opponent is on their side of halfway.

The Lions again looked like the smarter and more mature team, but it was VERY close. Early in the game, the Lions blitzed on almost every play, and the Packers had no answer for it. The offensive line got off to a terrible start. Our best lineman, Zach Tom, got blown up twice right out of the gate. The O-line eventually settled down, and the Packers took the lead a couple times in the second half, but by that time the defense was reeling.

I'm not as big on the need for a "signature win" as some people. It would have been great to get one here. The game at Minnesota is the only chance for that now. But maybe the signature win could happen in the playoffs. This game proves that the Packers are not far away.

I wanted them to take Cooper DeJean too. But he fell deep into the second round, so lots of teams passed on him for whatever reason. Maybe it was because it was unclear whether he would fit best as a safety or a cornerback, and he might not excel at either position. Slot CB may be his best position, and you generally don't draft slot specialists in the first round. At any rate, this might end up being a case of the draft pundits being more accurate than NFL GMs. It happens sometimes. Drafting is not an exact science.

I thought it was a little odd that the announcers accepted that call without question, and they never showed a decent replay. Maybe Watson stuck out his elbow a little when he ran into the guy. After the game, LaFleur seemed to be okay with the call. He said, “Bottom line is, if you’re running a shallow cross, you’ve got to avoid the defender, and we didn’t."

The Lions are proverbially playing with fire.

Another game, another officiating crew and they give up at least 3 more very costly (and large yard) penalties.

My only solace is that they are setting themselves up to incur these in higher stakes post-season games.

This had the feel of a heavyweight fight but what it showed was the talent level of the Lions is above Green Bay. Don't forget the Lions drafted near the top of the draft for years. They had several top-level talents not on the field Thursday night. All that talent has coalesced under Campbell's regime.

Goff was the difference. While Love had his moments, Goff was dead on, even when blitzed.

While the Packers linebackers had their moments, they simply got moved out of the way by a really good Lions offensive line and backs. The Packers defensive line also had its moments, but not enough.

The secondary was thin without Alexander and injuries and it showed late in the game.

Josh Jacobs proved his mettle as the offensive line had trouble consistently opening holes.

I thought a game plan giving Love more room to run would have opened the Lions defense a bit more.

A tough game to lose, but it likely means a road game in the playoffs...UNLESS...they collapse down the stretch.

Still much to be determined. They proved they could play with the Lions but just not enough horses to win the race.

Gute will need a knowledgeable defensive mind to choose ready-to-play, elite defensive players in the Draft. Green Bay does not have enough of these types and therefore just cannot compete with teams like the Eagles, Lions and other top teams. McKinney, Cooper, Wilson et al are a start but there are major holes everywhere, particularly in the Corner Room, DL and it looks like the OL as well. Gute just cannot be the guy who chooses, he needs someone else to accompany him. It is imperative that precious Draft Capital is managed carefully. Green Bay can't keep repeatedly sinking this many resources into a continually poorly-performing Defense-it's very wasteful.

Jaire is becoming Bakhtiari and needs to be let go. It will be expensive but relying on a guy who is available 20-25% is draining and morale-lowering for the team and fanbase. He has already missed 7 games! He was out for long periods in previous 2 years as well.

GB also needs to be very careful about who they extend contracts to-

The Pack was not efficient running the ball and JLove was under pressure to much of the game. The OLine didn’t hold up against the Lions second and third string DLine and line backers.
IMO our OLine got out physicaled by a bunch of back ups.
Our injured secondary was playing the top offense in the league with no pass rush to help them.

December 06, 2024 at 10:03 am

The first quarter was tough to watch as our OL was just getting pushed around by the Lions 3rd and 4th stringers. And they blitzed on almost every play and MLF just kept calling slow developing passes instead of quick outs, slants, and Kraft on a turn around to help Love. I don't get the play calling. We ran the ball 1 time in the first 2 offensive series. Then we got so predictable I was calling out the plays before they snapped the ball. Very little play action as the Detroit safeties were rushing the line in run support, yet we kept going shotgun.

The defense is confusing. I see our LBs 20 to 30 yards downfield? Goff takes off running and as slow as he is NO ONE is near him and he almost gets a 1st down? On their screens I see our LBs turn and run back in pass coverage and are 20 yards downfield when they throw the screen. I thought Hafley would call an attacking style of defense, and I would say we stopped the run game really well. But this pass defense is terrible, soft, no pass rusg, and very few blitzes, especially blind side corners. And if you are going to blitz, you can't play soft zone and give the qb a quick target.

I was disgusted with no drive backwards after point of contact on D. Kudos to DET skills players for their shake & bake, but how the hell can they gain a couple yards post contact time after time after time? We couldn't get off the field because we kept conceding an extra yard or two on every play. Little things make the big difference. TACKLE = low center gravity, sqaure up, drive through!

Also the mentality of our players, not just in the first half, but the second was terrible. We expect Campbell & crew to be a bunch of Tazmanian devils, but our demeanor felt like "just show up and take the L." They were defeated before kickoff--it all starts with attitude; in essence, no leadership out there. Hard truth, but Campbell is just a better leader of men.

If we can clean this up, get healthy, and get confidence back, would love to see DET again on their home turf...3rd time's the charm!

Just show up and take the L? Defeated before the kickoff? Did you even watch the game? The Packers led twice in the second half, and the game was decided on the final play. Yes, the Packers got off to a bad start, but they fought back. They have nothing to be ashamed of.

Close game. A walkoff FG at the end. There's no reason to hang our heads over this. Win the next four, finish 13-4, take the #5 or #6 seed, and see if we can do better.

Detroit has an excellent short passing game that gets the ball out of Goff's hands before the pass rush can reach him. I think if you can find a way to disrupt that, you can beat these guys. We scored 31 points....and as usual, should have had more.

I think that when Alexander, Cooper, WIlliams and Bullard are all on the field together then the middle of the field gets protected a whole lot better.

Likewise, on offense, when Doubs is back the middle passing game gets more reliable too (add Musgrave in here as well, he too will be back for the playoffs).

I'll acknowledge the argument that the Lions too have multiple key injuries - but as the saying goes, you can only play the team presented to you....... and I'm casting my gaze to the end of this year.

no depth at corner thanks to Gutey who didn't draft or trade or use free agency so aside from the part timer Alexander we are left with a bunch of practice squad caliber defensive backs. maybe next year .

Nixon and Valentine are not great, but they are better than practice squad caliber. I think they need Alexander to get healthy to have a decent shot at winning a championship this year, however. It seemed like they were banking on Stokes to make a full comeback and/or Valentine to make a jump in his second year, but neither of those things have happened.

I'm just going to go ahead and enjoy the rest of the season, okay? There are lots of talented players and coaches in the NFL. The success of those individuals and their ability to perform and be successful as a team ebbs and flows throughout a season. I'm old enough to remember when the Kahlil Mack trade was going to tilt the field forever for the Bears. Still waiting for that tilt. The Broncos were a QB away from the Super Bowl. So were the Jets. And, it the Vikings could trade for Herschel Walker? Whoa, then lookout!

The Lions have a nice team right now. This might be their year, and it might not. Lord knows they've been given (earned?) high draft choices for decades and, well. you know the blind squirrel and the nut thing. Coach Campbell almost got in his own way again last night. But, his team bailed him out. Okay, carry on Dee-Troit, you dynasty in the making, you!

I like this group of young men that comprise the Packers team. No, they are not NFL All-Pros at each position as some feel is needed to compete and win. They're a team. It's been said that our focus determines what we see. I saw a team last night that played hard, played for each other, and had an opportunity to win. When the Lions winning FG sailed thorough the uprights I did not scream "damnit. this team is broken, we need to throw it away and get a new one! Fire everyone and blame Gute!!" I'm a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers. I'm not a bogus critic, troll, whiney little piss-baby, fist-shaking-mouth-breather, or know-it-all-draftnik. I'm a fan of this team. That's it.

Thanks! You're right, that's why I waited a couple days, but seeing the NFL's clown show with zadarius whacking Love in the head and it just being totally overlooked, along with the play at the end of the game where we had a touchdown and then didn't have a touchdown I had to really take a long time off and calm down.

So much for our vaulted offensive line. A bunch of 2nd and 3rd stringers, some acquired just this week kicked their asses in the trenches.

Yeah. I don't see how it's possible to score 31 without any blocking, but if it's possible, we should quit drafting offensive linemen and spend our draft capital on skill position players who are good enough to score 31 without blocking.
