I don't share Aaron's acceptance of Royce Newman. The problem with Newman is that going into his fourth season, his ceiling appears to be very low. You should be able to get similar quality play from a younger player who still has a chance to improve. Newman's continued existence on the roster is proof that the Packers have not adequately reinforced the interior O-line. I was hoping Donovan Jennings (an undrafted free agent) would make a run at a roster spot, but he's been out with a knee injury and has not even played in training camp yet. The window may be closing for him, at least this year.
I feel better about the backup QBs after this game. Clifford always seems to have some rough moments out there, but he keeps fighting. Pratt looks smoother though, and I think he might be able to pass up Clifford by the end of training camp.
I don't see how they can keep Grant DuBose off the roster. I hope they are looking into trading him, Melton, or Heath for a backup offensive lineman if there is a team that is well-stocked at that position.
Aaron is right that A.J. Dillon did not have much room to run, but Emmanuel Wilson is just a better runner, period. I don't see how they can keep Dillon over Wilson unless Dillon's pass blocking is drastically better than Wilson's. I'm skeptical that Dillon is going to make a jump in year five, and today's game did nothing to reassure me that he is any faster or more elusive than he ever was.
Evan Williams looked great out there. Wow. And Kalen King made a nice play. Usually the first game of preseason is where I come back to earth a little with my expectations for the Packers, but this game made me feel that they may be about as good as I think they are.

Newman has looked good before against vanilla Ds. He was the top rated OL in his rookie preseason. Then a D rolled out stunts against him and he’s never been the same since. Dillard is similar. They are fine when they know what’s coming. The Browns were as vanilla as we were. Ignore the past at one’s peril. Neither have held up in camp when assailed by less basic calls.

The Newman discussion is very similar to the 8th wideout. If he makes the team, he deserved to. End of story.

Can we go back to written gut reactions???
I can't watch the videos and this is one of my favorite pieces to read after games.

We seem to go through this every season. So far we’ve been rewarded with text. I will be honest, I’ve not watched. Was about to leave after seeing no text and saw the comments. This is usually a first port of call after a game in season, when I’m often not in a position to watch or listen.

So much this!! Coldworld we are the same.
I always skip the videos as I just dont have the time and im a very fast reader. I will at times stop at a video if there are comments like this one and at least read the comments but there has to be more than a few or im moving on.
I know as business guys the site owners need podcasts and videos because they likely support other social media platforms, not just this site. But for this site I wish we could have all txt.... but alas we all have our wishes....

I much prefer the written reaction as well. It takes five minutes or less to read instead of 25 minutes to watch, and it contains just as much information. It's also easier to respond to a written article because the text is right there for you to look at, instead of having to remember what was said.

I've always just relied on the text for the same reasons others have mentioned, mainly the simple efficiency of having an easily skimmed summary that doesn't take up 25 minutes. But based on the comments above, I watched the video and found nothing in the way of actual visual content, just talk. That seems to be yet another reason to provide the text, which is helpfully insightful in general.

Agree 100%. I will always turn off the video reactions and search for written reactions from another site.

Also, there should be no way that Newman makes this team... He is at best a turnstile at G.

How do you cut Wilson?
He just performs when he plays.
I think Dillon will will be elsewhere this year.

Does Dillon get that 5 yard TD through the pile? At 226 Wilson is not a small back and he seems to have power as well as more burst and wiggle. I want to say yes, Dillon would have, but I can’t convince myself really. If that’s the case on a power run, then there’s no doubt Wilson is more of a threat in space.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Dillon gets cut and they save a couple million off the salary cap. Wilson looked really good.

They also have a couple of years of control if they keep Emanuel Wilson. IIRC, Wilson would be an ERFA for 2025 at least and I think he is still an ERFA in 2026, so a RFA in 2027. A cheap backup behind big money Jacobs and third rounder Lloyd.

Aaron, right at the end of the video you mention Lloyd's injury and imply he will be a good candidate for "stashing on the practice squad". Seems highly unlikely that he would make it through to the squad. He was a 3rd round pick, overall the 4th RB drafted this year. He will not pass unnoticed by the other 31 NFL teams.

I’d be amazed if Lloyd made the PS. He’s a round three pick and a player with a decently high draft profile. He hasn’t played himself off the team in any way, he’s just not been healthy.

It is possible he meant stashing him on IR.

Another reason for a written Gut Reactions - you can more easily edit a confusing sentence in text than in an MP4 (or whatever format they're using).

Aaron knows his football better than that. NOWAY Lloyd gets through to the PS, not a chance. He must have meant IR. As much as we all looked forward to seeing Lloyd this year, with Wilson running good and Jacobs seemingly 100% healthy I see Lloyd going to IR.

I think it’s a little early to worry about “cutting” anyone especially AJ Dillon. MarShawn Lloyd has a hamstring injury. They mentioned that he’s been dealing with something throughout camp. One more injury there and… Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Let’s get through the next two games before we start making decisions.

Cuts come after game 3, so I doubt anyone was suggesting cut Dillon now. The reality is though, that his near worst in the league yards after contact last season looked more like the guy who managed half a yard on 4 carries yesterday. He’s not a big threat if he breaks through either, he’s there to get hard yards as his bread and butter, but doesn’t. He was meant to be the guy who got exactly the type of 5 yard TD Wilson did last night.
Can you convince yourself Dillon would have converted that or run harder in doing so? Wilson may never be a star, but if he does get in space he’s going to get more yards than Dillon. If Wilson isn’t that good then it actually casts darker shade on Dillon.
It’s a small sample, certainly, but Dillon needs a huge offensive game next week in my view. He can’t just take blocked yards. Any number of RBs who fail in the league can do that, he has to show he can make them and then capitalize by breaking tackles, as Wilson also showed last night. If not he’s no better than Taylor was last year, and more expensive.
Taylor was a guy who bounced up and down from the PS due to his protection capability (he actually still managed a ypc a full 1.1 yards more than Dillon’s on limited use), not a number 2 RB. He looks a strong candidate to be available in September this year too.

Sixteen comments in and the only firing anyone is calling for is the axe falling on video gut reactions (and I agree). I'd say, as a unit, the CHTV Commentariat is maturing, but we've yet to establish our 2024 identity.

Let me start by saying that I love this site.
Now, a little hurtful truth.
Nagler is intelligent about football. But IMO, comes off as a smug, half-in-the-bag, know-it-all, who loves to hear himself talk in any of his audio presentations. He is by far a much better written presenter than audio. This does not exclude some of the other podcasters here at CHTV, but their issues are for another time, if I were inclined to offer such.
There is a saying, 'Stick to what you do best'
I do appreciate the efforts of the many supplying content, by i cannot help but sense that too many are over their skies in their endeavor.
Before it is put out there, no, I do not believe I can do better than what is offered, which is why I stay in my lane, which does not include writing or audio content.
There is a reason why the podcast content often has little to zero comments. Either the content is poorly delivered or the content is boring.
Again, I love this site, but it certainly has its flaws, and the over-saturation of podcast-style articles is a huge one.

Aaron is an affable and funny commentator. Being in his cups is a part of his charm, he is at heart a Wisconsinite, football and drink are synonyms. As for him being a "know-it-all" well, he is smarter than most of the denizens of the site and I think it's fair to say he is knowing, not know-it-all.

Didn't learn anything and in pre season that's not new. Two more weeks we will know more.
I liked what I saw in Wilson. Back two in my book.
Watched a few games besides and their are some teams loaded with top receiving core
Cleveland is one of them, most didn't play.

Are they the worst team in the North, or the worst team in the NFC?
