Green Bay’s First-Round Pick Shouldn’t Be A Pass Rusher

The premium pass rushers in this year's draft will likely be off the board by pick 23, and the Packers don't need another developmental project.

The Green Bay Packers' pass rush was arguably the most disappointing part of their 2024 defense. According to ESPN, the unit ranked 26th in pass rush win rate. Rashan Gary led the team with 47 pressures, but that was only good for 31st among all edge rushers.

The lack of a consistent pass rush was a key issue highlighted by Brian Gutekunst in his season-ending press conference. “We didn’t grow into that consistent front like we had hoped,” he admitted. Days later, the Packers parted ways with defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich and hired longtime Patriots assistant DeMarcus Covington to fill the role.

Green Bay is backing Gutekunst’s message about the urgency to compete for a championship. Changing defensive line coaches was a necessary first step, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.

The Packers need to address their pass rush this offseason, and I expect them to be active in both free agency and the draft. However, I’m not a fan of Gutekunst using Green Bay’s first-round pick on a pass rusher this year.

Pro Football Focus lists six edge rushers in the top 22 of their big board. Abdul Carter is the most NFL-ready edge rusher in the draft and arguably the best player overall, making him the one prospect who could start immediately for Green Bay. While it’s unlikely all six top edge rushers will be gone by the time Green Bay picks, Carter won’t be available at pick 23. James Pearce Jr., Mykel Williams, and Mike Green are also prospects who could be off the board by that time.

Shemar Stewart, Nic Scourton, and Jack Sawyer should all be available when Green Bay picks, but they would be developmental projects. That’s not a knock on their talent, but what do they offer that Green Bay doesn’t already have with Lukas Van Ness and Brenton Cox Jr.? This defense needs players who can contribute immediately, not another rotational piece.

Green Bay could trade up if they’re heavily invested in one of the top edge rushers, but they simply don't have the same draft capital they enjoyed in the past two years. Would Gutekunst be willing to give up extra picks when the Packers also need help at cornerback, wide receiver, and on the interior offensive line?

I don't believe a pass rusher with high college production and upside will be available at pick 23. That's why I expect Gutekunst to address Green Bay's pass rush issues in free agency. Khalil Mack is the most interesting name, and given Gutekunst's track record of pursuing him, it wouldn’t be surprising if they make a move. Chase Young and Josh Sweat are also viable options. To put things in perspective, Mack recorded 49 pressures last season, two more than Rashan Gary, despite playing one fewer game. Sweat recorded 54 pressures, while Young tallied 66. All three would have been Green Bay’s most productive pass rusher this past year.

It makes more sense for Gutekunst to address the pass rush in free agency. Green Bay has a much better chance of finding a starting cornerback in the first round than an NFL-ready pass rusher. Adding to the urgency, Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell are all free agents, and Jaire Alexander’s future with the team is uncertain. Green Bay needs both starters and depth at cornerback. Meanwhile, the Packers have already made their pass-rush investment. Gary, Van Ness, Cox Jr., and J.J.Enagbare are all under contract for 2025.

You could argue that the cornerback Green Bay hypothetically selects at No. 23 might not start right away. However, their chances of finding a defensive back who can contribute immediately are much higher than landing a pass rusher with both proven college production and high upside. Those guys are usually off the board by pick 15.

The Packers also have the healthiest cap space they've had since 2019, which positions them to be active in free agency. With names like D.J. Reed and Paulson Adebo expected to hit the open market, Gutekunst could take a similar approach to cornerback as with the pass rush. The key difference between those groups is that Green Bay already has its No. 1 pass rusher in Rashan Gary, along with depth behind him. But if Jaire Alexander’s time with the team is coming to an end, the Packers would lack both a clear starter and reliable depth at cornerback. That makes addressing the position a much higher priority.

Drafting a developmental project is not necessarily a bad move, as it could pay off in two or three seasons, but 2025 is not the year for doing that in the first day of the dratt. The Packers have made the playoffs in the first two years of the the Jordan Love era, and as Gutekunst said in the press conference, they need to competing for championships. This means shifting away from his usual roster-building philosophy. Green Bay needs to draft to win now, and their first-round pick should be used on a player who can start immediately.

I’d expect the Packers to add new pass rushers, through both free agency and the draft. Yes, they’ll likely draft another developmental pass rusher, but it can’t be in the first-round. Green Bay is in a prime position to compete for the division and potentially more. The Lions have lost most of their coaching staff, including both coordinators, the Vikings' quarterback situation is uncertain, and the Bears will have a rookie head coach. Brian Gutekunst must ensure the roster is in the best position to succeed, and that starts with addressing key needs with adequate talent.

At LEAST a couple of 1st rounders to start with I've heard.

If they get that, good luck to them. I don’t think they will for a guy turning 30 before the season. I’d willingly give up first rounder this year for their 4th and a provisional 2nd next, with an escalator clause if he hits a 15 sacks in the regular season and we make the playoffs. I’d offer them any DL on our roster of their choosing if they want one as well, but Gary and perhaps Wyatt to an extent would lower the picks. Clark’s age and contract relief would mostly offset.

lol. No way this ever happens. CLE will get 2 1s and it will go up from there. There is history of great players getting paid like that. Davante, Mack in 2018, Hill 2 years ago. The list goes on.

Adams to the Jets was a conditional 3rd. Mack was 3 years younger in ‘18. Who knows. This asked what we would be willing to pay and the above is it. Perhaps someone will go truly nuts. We will see, but knowing one’s price limit and sticking to that is the key to making this work.

Of course I just pulled mine from a couple of minutes consideration, but a straight 2 first rounders is too much in my opinion on a team that still has needs and contracts coming up.

First round pick should simply be best player available regardless of position with perhaps an exception at QB, RB, and TE this year since there is no opportunity there for impact.

Tend to agree: you get better when you replace a lesser player with a better one. There are several positions where a play-ready rookie could improve the depth chart immediately.

I expect Gute to be active in free agency this year, but maybe not in the first week. The first week is where stupid money often gets spent. There will be some quality players available after the first frenzy and he has a number of places of need - pass rusher, CB, reserve OL, and WR. Between free agency and the draft he should be able to find solutions to all of the holes.

Would love to see Mack or Young as an obvious passing down rusher. Both late in their careers and likely wanting to play for a contender - the Packers would be a good fit if the price is reasonable.

Not just reserve O-line. Improve the O-line period. It's been proven we need starting caliber depth that will push, improve or replace.

I'm assuming Myers is gone. That would leave Walker, Jenkins, Rhyan, Morgan and Tom as the starters. I doubt a draft choice is going to replace any of them. Rhyan would be the most vulnerable to replacement but there are no top tier centers in this year's draft. So draft for depth and development as the Packers have very little depth anywhere on the OL.

Due to injuries you usually need seven. The Packers have only five. The starters will be better with Myers gone but they have zero depth right now. Draft for depth.

It's pretty much the same as last year, when they drafted for depth and the future. Jordan Morgan was never likely to be a major upgrade over Rasheed Walker. Unfortunately they ended up only six deep on the offensive line, and #7 needed to play in the playoff game.

I've learned my lesson and try not to hope and wish. Even then, I still get surprised by the direction taken in these drafts. Not just the last few seasons or under Gute. Ever. Just have to wait and see who they get then talk and try to get excited about them.

I agree that addressing the CB situation is a much higher priority right now, but WR isn't far behind with Watson's injury and Doubs suffering too many concussions. And would we really be interested in extending Watson anyway?...And even though we have depth on the DL, this is a good class and I would never be opposed to selecting a potentially dominating player here.

Just like O-line, the Packers need to (and usually do) get 2-3 D-line a season. If either falls into their lap that isn't a project, it would be wonderful. Can't excuse reaching for a CB if one of those big guys is still waiting in the wings.

I don't know what the Packers first round pick should or shouldn't be, but looking at the photo of Gute, I think we can all agree that if things don't work out for him in Green Bay, he has a future in modeling for Lands' End.

I doubt that he is anywhere close to being fired, nor should he be. Let's wait a couple years to see how the team retools around Jordan Love. The 2024 defense was the best we've had in a while, in spite of it being full of players who fans love to hate. Now the offense needs to take the next step.

Morgan is a horrible pick in his first year because…he was hurt most of the year? That’s an absurd position to take. How about cooper and Williams? Bullard wasn’t bad and we don’t know about Lloyd who was hurt but was the lightning replacement for Aaron Jones? If I recall that offseason the GM also signed some guy named Jacobs who I believe was a serviceable RB1 and I think a guy named McKinney who seemed at least worthy of coming off the bench. If I recall that guy had something like five straight games with an INT. Any credit for finding a starting RT in the 2022 4th round ( Tom) and a starting LT in the 2022 7th round (Walker)? Van ness may not be a successful first rounder although I’d say another year before that verdict, but in the same draft the terrible GM found two starting TE, and two starting WR.

Sorry, overall this comment is not supported by the facts on the playing field. Seems to me that the off-season need to be viewed in totality… draft and free agency in light of cap space, draft depth and needs. Assuming the coaches start BPAP (best player at position), it makes damn near squat difference if the pick was the first round or fifth round….

On another subject, I’d love to see Myles Garrett in green and gold but the cost will be prohibitive since the firsts we could offer are late round. Perhaps we could make an offer with Willis, Tom, , two firsts and a swapped 2nd for third rounder but that would really require some good free agent shopping. Just please oh football gods, do not send him to the lions, Vikings or bears…

Doubt it sticks, but QB Jaxon Dart hype could be a medium to acquire further draft capital trading back once or twice in the 1st.

Talkin dirty to me would be if we acquired CHI's dual 2nds #39 #41 to pair with our #54.

No problem that Packer's 1st round pick won't be a pass rusher - because Gutekunst - for the second year in a row will take an OT ( Josh Simmons?)

My rationale is that the OT class in this Draft is considered to be relatively strong. However the depth of the class beyond the top few players may be thin. Whereas the D-line appears to be very strong and one of the deepest positionst. Also the CB class is quite strong - with a number of interesting Day 2 and 3 prospects. Conversely, the consensus is the wide receiver class is not particularly strong - with few, if any, blue chip prospects.

So I see the Packers draft unfolding as follows:
1st - OT
2nd & 3rd - D-line and CB
4th - 5th - CB, WR, LB
5th - 7th - All other positions

By the way - this is one of the strongest and deepest RB classes. So Gutekunst may want to take adavntage of the RB abundance.

Looks decent to me though none of us will nail what the Packers will do. With 3 picks in the top 100, I wouldn't mind trading one or two later picks for one more early pick. Green Bay will get a late pick (comp) for losing Nijman so should be 8 selections. Getting excited to hear and see what happens with the roster in the next two months.

Based on Gutes past 1st round drafts pick, I would trade our 1st round pick this year and some of our higher round draft picks next year for a chance at Myles Garrett. I don't need another LVN pick, Gute really blew that pick. If there is a chance to get Myles Garrett I would say GO FOR IT...!!!!! He is a game changer something the Packers desperately need on the defensive line. Its a no brainer...

I say Gute will sign his own.
So yes- that means Myers and Slayton stay.
This team will have a healthy OL.
It's too late to change the DL.
And his problem child is Alexander.
If the Eagles can go to the super-Bowl with Rookies CBs.
Gute would follow their lead.
The Kicker is WR.
He changed RBs.
The smart play is to upgrade the Wrs.

I should add this-
Creede Humphrey is the top paid center in the NFL
Myers isn't in the top ten and won't make 10 mil.
5 Mil will sign him. Or we move Jenkins.
Also keep in mind that your Wrs
are the top athlete's in the NFL now.

If Jenkins is moved we have a 10M+ center 30 yo center, no? seems dangerous to me.

WR's and Corners and maybe edge are the top athletes. A case could be made for Pennei Sewell.

Compare Veach's draft in 2022 vs Gutey's. Veach said they hit gold and that particular draft put them in back-to-back-to-back Super Bowls. I still take Watson at #22 and save the two picks for McBride & Bonitto. He made the move for Mahomes and the rest is History.

I wouldn't mind Gute picking a LB who can blitz, a CB with some cover skills, an OT that plays OT. Yes, a pass rusher is a need, but not if we have to develop him. Look to FA for Edge/pass rushers. I think we need a speedy, sure handed WR and especially so, since Watson is out for at least half of next season--but that won't happen in the 1st round. GB hasn't drafted a WR in the 1st round, in over 20 years. I'd think we pick a WR in the 2nd-3rd rounds, at the earliest. We also need to make better use of our TEs. Kraft and Musgrave should be front and center on downs where we need to move the chains. Our RBs, too! Pass plays for our RBs need to become a reality. Receivers catching the ball needs to be come a reality, too.

Golf packer I agree on egbuka if he’s there at 23 I sure hope gute picks him . He’s same size as jsn but faster , it’s time gb takes a first rd wr !! Five years of cheap control for a very talented wr is a steal and it would fill out our wr room . Corner , oline, dline , etc can be had rds 2-7 and / or fa . it probably won’t happen but it should Egbuka is near a blue chip prospect that can beat man coverage and that’s exactly what gb needs in the nfc north to free up the rest of our wrs Great route runner 6’1” 200 + 4.30 speed it’s time we get one of the Ohio state great wrs
