General Info:
21-year-old defensive tackle with three years of experience at Florida.
Born in Lake Wales, Florida, Dexter stayed local to play his college ball and racked up 77 tackles, 10.5 for loss, 5 sacks and 2 interceptions during his 36 games with the Gators.
Dexter saw an increase in playing time as his college career went on, starting two games as a true freshman in 2020, nine games in 2021 and all 13 in 2022.
In high school, Dexter was a varsity basketball player and starred in track and field as a discus thrower.
Positional Skills:
Strengths
First and foremost, Dexter is a tremendous athlete, having tested extremely well in the pre-draft process.
He posted a 9.53 Relative Athletic Score (RAS) on a 0-10 scale compared to previously drafted defensive linemen, including an ‘elite’ speed grade, a ‘great’ grade for size and explosion, and a ‘good’ agility grade.
This rare athleticism is confirmed by his game tape, where Dexter’s explosiveness is clear to see.
As a pass rusher, Dexter can bull rush with the best of them, displaying easy power in his body and hands. He can rip through a guard with little resistance.
These powerful hands also help against the run, where Dexter can use them to shed blocks. He is flat out hard to block one on one and can clog gaps in the run game if he wants to.
His impressive movement skills also show up on tape. Against Kentucky, Dexter was able to chase Will Levis to the sideline as he attempted to scramble and prevented him from gaining much yardage.
Dexter has lined up at different spots along the defensive line, being deployed as a 2, 3 and even a 5-technique at times.
Weaknesses
For everything that’s impressive about Dexter, he simply does not want to eat his vegetables. There is a concerning lack of patience and technique to his game.
Dexter is a big play guy, not a ‘do your job’ guy. Don’t expect him to stand up versus a double team and hold his gap in the run game. He’s not trying to do the boring stuff.
You won’t really see Dexter shed blocks at the right time to make a tackle on the ball carrier, which indicates a lack of awareness for the ball.
His effort can also be questioned at times. Dexter is late off the line of scrimmage constantly and isn’t the best hustler to the ball in the run game.
Fit with the Packers:
From an athletic standpoint, Dexter would be a great fit for the Packers, easily clearing the team’s recent thresholds for the defensive tackle position.
He can wreck a play at any moment, and that is welcome on any NFL team. If you can convince Dexter to play the game to the absolute best of his ability, he could be a star, but is this a project the Packers would want to take on?
If so, entering a defensive line room with a strong veteran presence in Kenny Clark could do Dexter the world of good. If Green Bay has the appetite for a player like Dexter, he could be a target for them on day two of the draft.

OMG, a second or third-rounder on this guy??!!
From an athletic standpoint, he'd probably be a great fit with a lot of teams. Otherwise, he has major project written all over him. I wouldn't count on the veteran rub-off effect, either--it's an arbitrary sort of thing that can't be relied on.

Fully agree. I have him or Keanu Benton in the third round. IMO D line is a major need, have to defend the run.

I always like depth in the DL for rotation purposes. So, he sounds like a good pick for the third round. His speed is rare for a man his size Definitely in round four If, and only if we drafted a premiere Edge and TE in rounds one and two. We drafted Samori Toure in the seventh round and I think he is a gem. Again, we need to look at best available in rounds 3-7 inclusive. Find the steals of the draft. We need depth everywhere including QB.We have a total of 10 picks. In Gute we trust.

How often does a guy with “hustle” issues in college fix them in the pros? Kid definitely has ability, but it’s only going to get harder. But maybe with good coaching and a good team culture, he could be something. Hard to say.

Exactomundo, TKW!
One of the top rated HS 5 star recruits in Country but he did not live up to that billing. Did not dominate in college. Made plays, but not consistently.
Many said Gary did not live up to his 5 star rating in college either...but his effort and work ethic was never questioned.
Like Gary, Dexter has "can do" ability. Does he have, as Gary does...."will do" ability? I don't think so.
I would not even have him on the board until a day 3 consideration.

I'd draft him. Good player. Young and will Learn.

He stood out when watching Florida games. Three to five tech.

It’s the wrong move. Drafting another NT?
Move Clark back to NT where he had great success, and draft another 3-5t.

He's a DL3.

Sorry. Doubler.
I do want Clark at NT tho, and rotated heavily with Slayton & Ford. Take some regular season snaps off him to keep him fresh for the playoffs.
Thinking we need to add 2 DL from this draft. At a minimum.

Yeah, sh, my bad.
I like Dexter a lot. I question the tone of this article, as if he needs coddling. Screw that. Look at his production, and it is rock solid. If anything, he needs the same technique work that nearly all DL require coming into the NFL. The guy has experience at NT 3t & 4i. Versatile.
Dexter is my #2 DT.

TBH I would draft 330 lb guys like Brodric Martin from WKU and play them as 3t or 4is. We had two 330 lb guys, Raji and Pickett, among our main 2010 d-linemen. Get the heavy guys up front.

Have heard there are some motor and effort concerns with him...

Lots of questions about his motor and those rarely go away in the NFL.

I can't even say why exactly, but I get a strong "Dean Lowery vibe" from Dexter.
I'm surprised people don't list him primarily as a 5-tech, because that seems what he's most suited to in my opinion.
I could take him at 78, but it would mean GMs had the same Big Board as I do and took all of my preferred players before that! :-D

Can't teach hustle. Would prefer two guys out of Benton, Roy, Brooks, Turner, and Stills.

For me, the big lack on the DL is a player who can be a force in the run game and allow the now lighter Clark plus Wyatt to threaten primarily. Slaton may become that, but he’s still, despite his size, better disrupting. I just don’t see our primary need as a disrupt first type of pick.
I see Dexter as a close parallel to Slaton at this point. A big guy whose best moments come penetrating and needing work to be a 3 down candidate. Slaton was a 5th round pick, and I think a good one at that stage if the draft. I just don’t see this guy as an early pick but as a guy with upside in the mid rounds.
