Felipe's Positives - Weeks 12 & 13, 2024
The Green Bay Packers are playing their best football of the season.
The Green Bay Packers took care of business with wins over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday and then against the Miami Dolphins on a short week.
The Packers dominated the trenches, and their pass rush showed signs of life. Jordan Love continues to look more comfortable with his mobility each week.
Anyway, let's get to some positives!
1-Josh Jacobs
He's an honorary member of Felipe's Positives at this point. Jacobs recorded over 100 scrimmage yards against both the 49ers and Dolphins, extending his streak to five consecutive games. It's the longest such run by a Packers player since Eddie Lacy in 2014 and ties him with Bijan Robinson for the longest streak in 2024. Jacobs dominated the 49ers with 106 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Against the Dolphins, he added 43 rushing yards and 74 receiving yards, highlighted by a 49-yard catch from Jordan Love.
2-The Pass Rush
Green Bay's pass rush is gaining momentum. Against San Francisco, 11 players recorded a pressure, and seven had a pass rush win rate of 11.1% or better, per Pro Football Focus. Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Quay Walker, Devonte Wyatt, and Kenny Clark each notched at least two pressures. They carried that energy into Miami, sacking Tua Tagovailoa five times. Moreover, five players earned at least three pres If the pass rush can maintain this momentum into December and January, the Packers could, and likely will, be a strong contender to come out of the NFC.
3-Matt LaFleur & the Red Zone Offense
Two weeks ago, the Packers ranked 27th in red zone offense. However, they’ve scored touchdowns on nine straight red zone drives, the longest streak in the NFL and tied for the second-longest this season. Additionally, last night marked Matt LaFleur's 65th career regular season win, moving him past Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, and Andy Reid for sole possession of second place for the most wins by a head coach in his first six seasons, behind only George Seifert (75). LaFleur is arguably the best play designer in the league right now when it comes to the running game. On Sunday, he used Kyle Shanahan’s own motion game against him and continues to find innovative ways to reinvent the offense.
4-Quay Walker
I’ve been one of the biggest critics of Quay Walker's play, but I’ll give him credit where it's due. He was Green Bay’s highest-graded defender against the San Francisco 49ers. Over the last two games, he totaled 17 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, a sack, and a pass breakup. He also recorded a team-high four pressures against the Dolphins. Walker has been flying all over the field. This is exactly the version the Packers expected when they drafted him in the first round in 2022.
5-Jordan Love
Jordan Love has posted three straight games with a passer rating above 100.0. He ended his 10-game streak of throwing an interception against the 49ers. Furthermore, Yesterday marked his first game with a 0.0% turnover-worthy play rate since Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, per PFF. Love seems more comfortable each week after spraining his MCL, and his mobility continues to unlock more of Green Bay's playbook.
6-Sean Rhyan
Sean Rhyan is a mauler in the run game and has been efficient in pass protection. He allowed zero pressures against the Dolphins and has given up just 14 pressures all season, tied for 48th among all guards. While Tucker Kraft is often credited with breaking Green Bay's third-round curse, Rhyan is starting to make his case as well.
The Packers take the field again Thursday night, this time visiting the Detroit Lions in a crucial division showdown. Green Bay can’t afford to fall three games behind Detroit. This is a must-win game to keep their division title hopes alive.

To me, the biggest positives were another seemingly good game from Walker, but also from Stokes. That was the best we’ve seen from him since his injury. Van Ness and the rush also seem to be coming on. When Gute said he expected to see that at his post Smith trade press conference, saying they saw signs, I admit that I was skeptical. The jump hadn’t been as great as it could be, or as I’d wish for, but it’s definitely there and trending up. It was particularly good to see Kenny Clark make some noise.
I wonder if Haley has changed something in their instructions, as it seems to be general not just one or two guys. I do think the tighter coverage yesterday was a factor in Stokes and Valentine being much better; Nixon too, if not as dramatically as Stokes (as he had less of a mountain to climb). Perhaps that was just a tactical change, but I like to hope it was Hafley learning how to get more from what he has, and thus a sign we will benefit from better contributions as the season progresses.

It seems like Cox and Moseby are quicker than Preston Smith.
As for Van Ness, Pete Dougherty at packersnews.com noted that Jordy Nelson didn't really do much until near the end of his third season. Van Ness is barely past the halfway point of his second season. Some players are late bloomers.
I was happy to see Stokes all fired up about a good tackle that he made against the Dolphins.

1) Josh Jacobs is having one of the best seasons a Packer ever had. He's been available and mostly keeps the ball secured. He's the engine of this offense.
2) The Pass Rush is beginning to benefit substantially from their reduced snap counts during the season, thanks to some very good depth. As the season wears on, if your Dline is healthy and fresh, that's an enormous advantage, IMO.
3) Nobody stops us in the redzone except ourselves.
4) People have been too critical of our leading tackler.
5) Rhyan was a Day 2 pick from a big school conference and if he's not ready to play RG by his 3rd year, then it would be a wasted pick. We get him for this year and next, and then we can decide if we want to pay $30/$45 Million to keep him. Probably not. But still, if we get 35 good starts out of a guy we take on the second day, that's not real bad. Truthfully, the signing of Runyan for $30M over three years makes me wonder if it's possible, or even desirable, to resign veteran Olinemen. I'm suspecting that most of the 9 OL on the active roster are going to be on their rookie deal. Maybe you can afford one vet, possibly two. That's it.
6) A good game by Love, who had good protection, a good running game, and receivers who made some plays. He doesn't have to win this games single handedly, but he does need to protect the ball and not hurt the team with bad mistakes. I he can just do that, he'll be a successful QB here..
There's not a week that goes by that I don't see a great pass play, one that gets me up yelling "Are you kidding me?" I'm at the point where I expect great catches.

a very young team coming into its own. sea legs. if we keep a receiving corp on it's first contract we can afford two or more second contract linemen. more important that the franchise be protected than the receivers be household names.
our leading tackler is over-hated by certain elements, often the same ones who hate our center (who had another terrific game). I noted the ratings of the players by PFF as they passed. so many less than average ratings for an offense and defense playing way above average. makes a fella wonder.

The Packers have not scored touchdowns on nine straight red zone drives. They kicked two short field goals against the Dolphins.

Not sure why I put “active” streak. I appreciate you pointing that out!

I chuckle when I hear the name Robert Rochell-sounds like a great stage name, partner at a white shoe law firm or a famous surgeon.

It was nice seeing running the ball and stopping the run.

What occurred to me while watching the game is that the Packers seem to be improving as the season goes on. To me, they are still in "warming up" mode. Because this squad could continue to improve their game, especially the intensity lapses, or something, that seems to occur in the third quarter. One of the impressive things is that the offense, when it scores TD's earlier and more often, makes the other team much more one-dimensional. This means they can focus on rushing the passer, putting on pressure, making the job of the DB's easier. Similar to last year, it's taken the team a while to gel. But when this group is focused and on point, they are elite.
