Eyes Front: Blitz Happy Vikings are Tougher Than We Think
Reeling Packers have another difficult task.
A few weeks ago, a wag on Twitter offered the following to describe how, after decades of a reliable pecking order in the NFC North, it is now all jumbled up and looks like this:
The Lions are now the Packers, the Bears are the Lions, the Vikings are the Bears and the Packers are the Vikings.
I quickly dismissed this as a troll trying to mess with everything we understand about the world. Now? Not so much, and people are mad. Very mad.
Me, too, even though, unlike many fans, I’ve lived through periods in history when the Packers couldn’t beat a team of grandmothers. But I’m also not ready to join the mob wanting everyone at 1265 Lombardi Ave. to be burned at the stake.
It would be one thing if this Green Bay team was saddled with untalented roster, or an incompetent front office, or a disastrous coaching staff (except for Joe Barry), but I don’t believe those things. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but what’s so frustrating is that there are just too many mysteries surrounding this team.
For example, who did Yosh Nijman piss off so badly that he can’t get on the field? It’s about time we got an answer, and the Packers beat reporters need to keep asking and keep digging.
Second, why has Matt LaFleur abandoned the scheme that had receivers open constantly the first two games, enabling Jordan Love to have a top passer rating. One reason is the Aaron Jones injury, making play-action a more difficult sell. But what you do in that situation is adjust the scheme, not abandon it, and it is baffling why MLF is instead reverting to a McCarthy-esque offense, with virtually no motion or deception, and a whole lot of go-balls that Jordan Love isn’t good at throwing. This is a developmental year, so why not lean into the youngsters’ speed and just play the scheme that should be played and let the kids make mistakes and learn by doing. There’s no downside.
Then there’s the defense, which is simply incomprehensible. I’ve yet to hear a cogent explanation of what Joe Barry is trying to do, except perhaps take away explosive plays, at which he is failing. The defense is a mish-mash of a few different concepts, with seemingly no regard for the opposition and trying to neutralize their strengths.
So while I’m not yet ready to yell “off with their heads” (except for Joe Barry), I’m equally not ready to R-E-L-A-X. How about we just take this season one game at a time, and hope to see some improvement along the way. Which brings us to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings are a bit of an oddity: Last year they were not nearly as good as their record, and this year they’re not nearly as bad as their record, even without Justin Jefferson. And after a miserable start, they’ve clawed their way back to 3-4, including last weekend’s upset of the 49ers.
Kirk Cousins has the ability to win games with monster performances, as he did last week, and lose games by choking in big spots. But there is no denying his throwing talent. But this team’s big offseason move was on the sidelines, bringing in Brian Flores as defensive coordinator.
Flores oversees a challenging defense that gets to the line of scrimmage in a consistent fashion before either bringing the house or rushing three and dropping every else back into coverage. You never know which, and It gave Brock Purdy fits and it will likely do the same to Love. Also, Flores and his squad are blitzing at historic rates.
If LaFleur and company can’t fashion a blitz-beating game plan, and on defense get to Cousins and neutralize Jordan Addison, it will be a very long, very ugly day at Lambeau.

"But I’m also not ready to join the mob wanting everyone at 1265 Lombardi Ave. to be burned at the stake."
Remember when the Packers USED to make all the smart moves? Bringing in new coaches when it was time, and hiring the RIGHT coaches?
It started with Murphy's choice as HC...Matt LaFleur. Then LaFleur is saddled with Pettine who I still think was better than Barry which obviously isn't saying much. MLF decides keeping Barry would be best despite, IMO, a bad showing in 2022. I don't give a damn about the 4 game winning streak to get back to 8-8 against mostly BAD teams... Barry's defenses suck!
Then, with a bunch of the better DCs in the NFL available for hire after the 2022 season LaFleur sits on his hands and does NOTHING...Just like his 2023 offensive scheme...NOTHING.
The Vikings? They hired one of those "Better DC's" in Brian Flores who is doing a hell of a job with a WHOLE LOT LESS despite going 13-4!
So my question to Jonathon is WHY aren't you ready to 'Burn" them at the stake?
As Kevin Greene once famously said to Clay Matthews, It Is Time! This isn't going to get better. I watched LaFleur unable to adjust for 4 plus seasons. He continues to so the same thing over and over again.
Hmmm...Insanity.

"Remember when the Packers USED to make all the smart moves?"
In the Wolf days? How many years in the past 20+ has the defense underperformed? Like 2 or 3 blips of being ok, but in a couple of those years, special teams blew it. TT preserved the CAP and kept it healthy by taking shots on the UDFA market. Regularly draft players at a different position than which they played for packers.
"all the smart moves" basically comes down to being lucky enough to have two HOF QBs that could cover for horrible defenses in regular season and just hope the defense sniffs the top 10 or top half.

I think Stenovich gave us the answer to a great deal more than he intended with his comments on Myers yesterday. They speak volumes to his deficiencies as a talent evaluator and coach and to how the switcheroo, Hanson, Nijman, Newman farces came around.
This man is obviously an excellent technician who needs someone to handle player decisions. I have absolutely no doubt after this that he is the major reason for the OL issues. This is a coach whom we need to remove now because of the harm he is doing to the team.

Probably be a reach for us to believe Steno is crafty enough to be blowing sunshine up Myers' butt publicly while motivating him in other ways privately? Kind of like when Bart told Vince not to dress him down in front of the team if he was expected to lead? Nah.
Did we ever get clarification as to why our "five best" included Billy Turner at LT instead of Yosh in the playoff loss to SF? Was that Stenos call? Regardless, this OL does not pass the eye test, and I'm guessing they'll be whiffing and on roller skates against Minnesota.

Steno proved to be a good O-line coach. OC, not so much. Who knows how much he puts into MLFs O though. Do you think this is MLF and Steno doing a hidea tank job for the next draft?
It's really the only explanation that works. The other miscalls like the Billy T. switch was to get to Rogers??? That wouldn't make sense.

I am now wondering about how good an O-line coach Steno was. He inherited Bahk and Linsley and was gifted Jenkins by Gute. Players or coaching? I would have said both until his more recent missteps with Hanson at center, Newman at RT, Walker at LT and Myers "playing the best football of his career". IDK

It will be interesting to see what Vikings team we get. I can see them using the Monday night win over the 49ers as a launching point where they are all of a sudden the talks of the NFC and how they are one of the teams to beat. Or I can see that being their super bowl win for the season and they come crashing back to earth this week. We will see which it is.
Vikings blitz will be a big test for Love. The last time he faced a team that blitzed heavily it was his very first start against the Chiefs. that game he wasn't prepared for it. We will see how much more prepared he is this time.
On defense Barry needs to do everything possible to get Preston Smith to cover Addison. I mean without Stokes, and possibly without Alexander, clearly Smith is the next best man to cover Addison.

The Yosh situation is perhaps a peek at the disfunction and contradictory nature of this regime. Yosh has the experience and skill set to clearly upgrade the current edition of our O line. Yosh just got paid by Gute. But...Yosh made someone mad so now he is getting 'shown' a lesson. No matter all the other factors. The other players see this and I guaranty you it matters. It destroys trust and sends the message 'do what your told or else...' This is not a good look for the organization. Some of the moments and quotes from Rodgers the last couple of years make more sense. The real reason Adams wanted out, maybe wasn't just to play with his buddy? Bad leadership is a corrosive thing to any organization and has a negative affect on performance and retention that we may now be seeing in all its gory detail.

October 27, 2023 at 08:27 am
Actually RCP, Stenovich offered some clarity on that yesterday. Our local Madison newspaper carried the full interview with Stenovich that the Packer News (which ColdWorld referenced above) used as the basis for their article on Myers.
Not only did Stenovich praise Myers for "playing the best in his career" this year, but he also stated that he had been disappointed in Nijman for not competing more with Tom for the RT spot in preseason. He then praised Nijman for "bouncing back" from that period by playing well on special teams and working hard generally.
What was unsaid, but by implication is that Stenovich had determined that Bahk and Walker were the LTs and Tom and Nijman were the RTs and there was no cross over. When Bhak went down Walker moved into the starting LT spot and Nijman was given no consideration at LT - then or now. Despite the fact that Nijman had played decently at LT last year when subbing for Bahk.
I am now questioning Stenovich's coaching ability. If Myers is "playing the best of his career" and "one of the Packers best five" (quotes from the article) and Walker is a better than Nijman at LT, this guy is not nearly the coach I thought he was. Unbelievable!
RCPackerFan
October 27, 2023 at 08:40 am
Thanks Guam. I didn't watch the coordinators yesterday. That is really interesting. I saw him talking about Myers being one of the top 5, because naturally twitter blew up over that.
I have seen comments about him not competing hard enough or whatever. I just know that Yosh is in the doghouse for some reason. I am guessing there are other reasons why. Reasons that we don't know.
Here is my question. Do we need to question Steno or Butkus more? Our OL was much better when Steno was the OL coach. The last 2 years it hasn't been nearly as good with Butkus as the OL coach.
Guam
October 27, 2023 at 09:07 am
Fair question RCP although I would tend to lump both of them together. Both of them seem to have tunnel vision regarding who belongs in what slot (they see Tom and Nijman as RTs when Tom could play center and Nijman play LT). I've run across guys like that in the course of my career (totally different industry) that see what they believe rather than what is possible. It leads to narrow decisions rather than options. I think both Steno and Butkus have to be similarly afflicted to not see the possibility of Tom at center and Nijman at LT. And a certain amount of stubbornness to refuse to see the options when others are pointing them out!
I would also note that Steno has done this type of thinking before. Think Hanson at center and Newman at RT, think of the NFCCG with Turner playing on one leg. Steno seems to get locked into an idea and can't or won't see other options.
RCPackerFan
October 27, 2023 at 09:24 am
Thats fair. I would agree mostly, but seeing the significant drop off from last year to this year, it makes me wonder if one is more to blame then the other.
When Steno was the OL coach they moved guys around a lot. I can't remember all the moves, but I remember they would move guys wherever they felt they needed. And they did it pretty regularly.
This year it feels like they decided to make a change to that, and to have players focus on one spot. Walker - LT, Tom/Yosh - RT, etc. Rhyan - RG. I don't know why they decided to go this route, but for some reason that is what they have done.
Guam
October 27, 2023 at 09:44 am
I think the loss of Bahk and the subpar play of Jenkins following his injury have more to do with the differential in play between years. Steno and Butkus are just not responding well to the problem.

Living in the Land of Ship Wrecked Sailors, I view the Viqueens every week. Cousins is continuing the groove he was in last season. Addison is the real deal and it helps to have Osborne with Hockenson a pure Receiving TE moving the chains. Mattison is getting to the Edge and Flores is auditioning for a HC job. His defense now is in a groove and Reed is a man on fire. It will be difficult for the Pack to get to Cousins fast enough, maybe Gary lines up Inside. Jaire has to be Healthy to 1:1 Addison. Owens will have to have a good game. Pack w/out Campbell, so McDuffie will need to exceed his limits.

But, "when you ain't got nothin', you got nuthin' to lose." This constipated offensive scheme is on LaFleur & Co. The whiffs from Gutedkunst and his failed draft strategy do not help, but time to take chances and put some pressure on the defenses. It would help if Watson was not in sick bay, 80% of the time. October 27, 2023 at 08:35 am
The best takes I’ve heard on what ails GB come from Mike Wahle. So far, it’s pretty obvious that this staff hasn’t been up to the task of developing this young roster. They have all the talent and athletic ability needed to be successful, but their technique, fundamentals, and decisions in the moment are seriously lacking. Joe Barry could have every all pro player on his defense, and he’d still find a way to make them the worst rushing defense in the NFL. If GB wants to draft and develop, they need a staff that develops. I’m not calling for everyone to be fired (except Joe Barry), but the organization will need to address this during the off season….one final thought…The Packers have relied too much on hall of fame QB play at the expense of the rest of the team. We all remember how complacent it got during the final days of McCarthy. We all remember how bad the special teams was in 2021. We all know how much the defense underperforms regardless of how much they invest in it. What GB needs to figure out is how to be competitive and win football games without a first ballot HOF QB rescuing all their underachievement elsewhere. I get it that everyone would like to see a continuation of elite level QB play year after year, but the Packers and the fans need to accept that that’s not realistic. I’m not saying it doesn’t matter who they have throwing the ball, but the team as a whole is putting an insane amount of pressure on whoever they put in that position. Way more pressure than is necessary, simply due to bad fundamentals across the board. We can’t forget how bad they were last year, even with one of the greatest to ever do it at QB. Their mindset when it comes to developing young players has to change, or they will continue to look exactly like they have looked this season.

First. I partly agree about the shift in teams but so what, every division has that over time as drafts can change the make up of any team from bad to good. I see the Vikes at the top, they will win the NFC and be there for some time.
Cousins aint going anywhere at the end of the season when they know what that have in him, pay him.
Second, the Vikes brought in an aggressive defensive coach which means they got rid of a coach who wasnt cutting it. The GM made the decision to improve.
Third, Barry is repsonsible to coach up valentine and ballentine. If they cant cut it chasing the fast vikes receivers they shouldnt be on the team.
Last, Love is going to be eaten alive. He cant pass his way out of this one, or run, or screen, he will be beaten down and the org has to ask, can we let this happen often going forward or no.

I'm thinking Musgrave and Deguara will have a big game against the vikings. Yes, I said Deguara. He, Musgrave and maybe Kraft could be open, a lot, on short routes when Love is being pursued by minnesota's pass rush. Look for Jones and Dillon to be outlets for Love, as well. If Love can get away from the blitzes headed his way, he may find WRs open downfield. I think most passing yards will come from short passes to open receivers underneath the coverage, though. Move the chains and put the Pack in a position to score. Our D has to pressure Kark. I see Gary and Clark being double teamed, a lot, so Van Ness, Enagbare and Preston have to create havoc in the viking's backfield. Kark will throw up some INTs. He may be the best QB we have faced, this season, but that ain't saying much. It's time to win in Lambeau, again. This game will be a good place to make HFA a thing again. GO PACK, GO!!!

I wouldn't think the Vikings would need to blitz that much. While Love has a low completion percentage against the blitz, he has yet to throw an interception and has only been sacked three times. Denver used a "bend but don't break approach" and tried to shut down running lanes for Love, which seemed to work pretty well.
If the Vikings do blitz frequently, it would be nice to see, a) Love capitalize on it, and b) one of our receivers to finally have a big game with triple-digit yardage or multiple touchdowns--that would be a great confidence-builder for this offense.

Nijman doesn't play I think simply because he had Lewis next to him last chip blocking every time something was coming making Nijman looking better than he was. If you go back and watch some of last year you can see that quite clearly. Did some coaching for 23 years and if you look you will see how often it happened. Thus although I always got blasted for saying we should have kept Lewis and see weak line play this year how wrong was I/ Just an observation.

The key was not to keep Lewis but to find a better Lewis.

Obviously not very successful in that search, for blocking it is said he was the best TE in the LEAGUE at that job!

I think it’s fair to say that he was not a long term solution. He’s the only one of the old guard I hoped we’d bring back. I suppose the snaps now may pay off in better play and blocking later.
They wanted dual threat players. It’s been rumored that some of our current TEs have threatened to block. Does that count?

"It would be one thing if this Green Bay team was saddled with untalented roster, or an incompetent front office, or a disastrous coaching staff (except for Joe Barry), but I don’t believe those things. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but what’s so frustrating is that there are just too many mysteries surrounding this team."
I am afraid this is the "THING".

Don’t expect much from a banged up team and incompetent coaching staff.

The D is exactly what it was last year. The O line has pretty much doomed any chance to get a clear view on offense. However I’ve little idea what we are trying to be anyway, probably because we can’t run it or stop the pocket collapsing. However, the scripted play to open games has been down right baffling as well as statistically impotent. That doesn’t speak well to a better overall plan.

First, let's dispense with the overheated rhetoric. No one is asking for the coaching staff to be "burned at the stake". Instead, you have a very concerned fan base seeing things that just don't seem to make sense. You seem to agree on this issue.
1. Why isn't Nijman playing? A mystery, wrapped in an enigma, in a riddle.
2. Why did LaFleur keep Joe Barry as DC, rather than replacing him last season, as everyone expected.
3. Why does it seem that Lafleur is so incapable of making any adjustments, either in game plans, or in making adjustments during the game? This is a pattern that has been apparent since LaFleur was hired.
4. How long will we have to hear "This is on me"; or "changes need to be made"? This harks back to McCarthy and the days of "We're going to address that", with no changes.
5. It is becoming increasingly apparent that LaFleur is in over his head without Rodgers as his QB. Given the chance to put his stamp on this team, and show the world that his offense could do without Rodgers constantly changing the plays at the LOS. So far, he and the offense have shown regression. And if WR's are not running correct routes, or the OL is getting flagged for stupid penalties, who is at fault for not stressing fundamentals?
So, yes, unless this coaching staff needs to either get a clue, or take positions in the NFL where they can actually succeed. Because right now, this seems to be a massive case of people being promoted to positions above their abilities.

I'll play, ricky! I love a good quiz.
1. I don't know, but you're thinking of Russia in 1939 not a middling OT in 2023.
2. Because Matt sucks at hiring. He described Drayton as "a special guy" and stuck with him in the face of overwhelming incompetence. Matt may be an Xs and Os genius, but he cannot effectively hire or manage people.
3. It doesn't seem that way, Matt *is* incapable of making adjustments. He started out over his head in this job, and has slowly walked into deeper water. While his W/L record as an NFL Head Coach is impressive, he's filled his pants at the most inopportune times, and now is lost in the wilderness.
4. How long? For as long as the NFL continues to put coaches and players in front of the media. I don't know about you, but, quite frankly, I long for the good old days of a spirited discussion of pad level.
5. Position coaches, and the head coach are at fault for not stressing fundamentals. But, wouldn't you think a professional football player would be fundamentally sound? Be able to tackle effectively? Keep his legs churning when running with the football. Solid blocking technique, like, oh, not leaving your feet? Sure, there are nuances with each position that need to be learned, but shouldn't you come out of college as a fundamentally sound football player?
Your summary paragraph correctly diagnoses a massive case of the Peter Principle. I don't think any current staff will suddenly get a clue.

As to question one in the quiz, I'd just like to add that even though it was 1942, Order No. 227 "Ni shagu nazad" - and so we are here.

Exactly noone on this staff is immune. We have seen enough to evaluate them to the point where their jobs should be on the line. By season end in the absence of any real improvements in development or progress with this youg group, and if it is more of the same, it is gross negligence not to fire them.

So put Steno back at O line coach, Butkus back in Chicago, MLF to OC, pull out the DeLorean to get a real DC last off season, and then we just need a HC.

Apologies to Monty Python, but couldn’t we just have a little burning?

I remember when we had a General Manager who had full authority of the football operations named Ron Wolf. We had a first year head coach named Ray Rhodes who had Sherman Lewis as an offensive coordinator and Emmitt Thomas as the defensive coordinator. They had Brett Favre at the helm and a good roster, yet they stunk. It took Wolf that season alone to recognize their terrible performance and he fired them all.
Gute may want to do the same thing, but he lacks the authority which resides in our CEO, Murphy who is busy building a Lambeau Field empire. Time for a change.

You may also, when you put yourself back in the time machine remember that Ron Wolf HIRED Ray Rhodes. Then he compounded that stupidity by hiring Mike Sherman as both Head Coach and GM. Ron Wolf hit the lottery when he latched onto Brett Favre and Mike Holmgren, then he spent the next years of his career convincing Bob McGinn that he (Ron Wolf) walked on water.
Ron got exactly one Super Bowl.

Actually, though, I think Rasul and Anders have been wonderful.
