Eagles 34, Packers 29: Game Balls / Lame Calls
Jordan Love injured in miscue-filled effort

The Packers traveled a long way just to get waxed in Brazil, and they mostly did it to themselves in a game that was more lopsided than the score would suggest.
Opening games are always wonky, especially with a new defensive system and brutal travel to unfamiliar territory with slick turf. Still, despite a couple of explosive plays to Jayden Reed, it was a parade of penalties, poor tackling and mental errors that ruined any chance of staying with a rejuvenated Eagles team and its major addition, Saquon Barkley.
Of course, none of this will matter if Jordan Love's injury in the last seconds of the game is serious. It certainly looked bad as he writhed in pain and had to be helped off the field after getting tackled trying to scramble out of the pocket to keep the desperation drive alive. As of this writing there was no official information available on the injury. One report quoting a doctor who watched the video speculated it is a high-ankle sprain. It’s hard to imagine this season amounting to anything if Love is out for a lengthy period of time.
In any event, it will be a long and depressing flight home for the Packers, who can only contemplate what could easily have been a 1-0 start to a season with sky-high expectations. We can only hope and implore the gods for some good news on Love’s health.
GAME BALLS
Jayden Reed — Picking up where he left off in his terrific rookie year, Reed continues to show why he is Green Bay’s most dangerous offensive weapon besides a healthy Love. Reed’s combination of burst, speed and powerful hands make him one of the league’s top all-purpose receivers, and he showed all those traits on his two touchdowns. The first, from an end around for 33 yards, and then his reception for 70, left Philadelphia defenders looking helpless. Almost as impressive was a leaping sideline catch to keep the last drive alive before the Love injury ended things. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈
Keisean Nixon — At times, the Packers’ slot corner and premier return man seemed to be everywhere. He accounted for six solo tackles out of seven total, including two for losses and an impressive sack of Eagles QB Jalen Hurts. Oh, and a 24-yard kick return. His only blemish was deciding to run the ball out of the end zone just before the Packers’ final drive after the Eagles kicked a lead-extending field goal. Instead of taking the touchback and giving Love a chance from the 30, Nixon only gained 15. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈
Quay Walker — In his second year as a Packer, Walker had his best game. With 11 tackles, seven solo and one for a loss on a great individual play, Walker executed the kind of linebacker play that is essential for Jeff Hafley’s new defensive scheme to succeed. Yes, he got juked on one of Barkley’s three touchdowns, but it was hardly an easy play, as Barkley showed why he is the league’s most fearsome running back right now. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈
UNSUNG HERO
Javon Bullard — Quietly, the second-round safety had a solid game for a rookie in a new scheme. He was around the ball to the tune of 11 tackles, matching Walker’s totals, including seven solo. His coverage wasn't perfect, but he was generally in the right place at the right time. Safety is a difficult position to quickly learn and then master at the pro level, and Bullard looks to be well on his way.
Honorable mention — Tucker Kraft, who had been listed as questionable to play, showed up in both receiving and blocking. He hauled in two of his three targets, one for 29 yards. Is it time to wonder if Kraft is the better of the two tight ends the Packers drafted last year? Luke Musgrave, the more highly touted prospect taken a round ahead of Kraft, was largely invisible, looks one-dimensional and has yet to have a significant impact in a game.
LAME CALLS
Penalties — Penalized 10 times for 71 yards, the Packers shot themselves in the foot so many times it’s amazing they were able to walk off the field. And of course several of the penalties came at critical moments, including 12 men on the field that erased a touchdown, and a killer defensive holding to extend the Eagles’ fourth quarter drive in which they took the lead for good. This team struggled with penalties last year, and Matt LaFleur has to get this cleaned up.
The defense — With expectations high after the firing of Joe Barry and the arrival of Jeff Hafley, the results weren’t that different. The Eagles had 25 first downs to the Packers’ 19, and dominated time of possession despite struggles of their own. The re-tooled secondary performed decently, with the exception of Jaire Alexander, who has yet to show himself to be the player thought of as a top corner in the league two seasons ago. Hurts was able to pick apart the defense with a dynamic set of receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. But the biggest problem was Barkley, who ended up with 109 yards rushing with two touchdowns and 23 yards receiving with one TD. Hafley simply had no answers, and Walker desperately needs rookie Edgerrin Cooper to develop quickly. Isaiah McDuffie is not up to the task and was repeatedly exposed. The only bright spot for the defense was a concerted and successful effort at keeping Hurts largely hemmed in and not hurting the Packers with his legs.
Lack of in-game adjustment — This is where I downgrade Hafley the most. After seeing what Philadelphia’s run game was accomplishing, little changed in the second half as the Eagles' passing game took advantage, and Philadelphia only had to punt twice all game.
The O-line — This line barely opened a hole for running backs until midway through the fourth quarter, when Josh Jacobs was able to finally get untracked after looking no better than AJ Dillon for the first part of the game. Yes, Emanuel Wilson had a couple of good runs in the first half, but overall this is a line built for pass protection and is sorely missing a dynamic run blocker.
FINAL WHISTLES
We got our first look at Brayden Narvosen, the last-minute acquisition who early on gave us visions of a consistent kicker, only to miss a crucial 43-yarder late in the game. This was the distance Anders Carlson often struggled with, and one that good kickers do not. Let’s hope Mr. Confidence can put it behind him.
Let’s all pray for Love.

Sit starters in preseason to avoid injury? Why? Your team comes out looking sloppy, disjointed and you lose... On top of that, you get your franchise QB injured on one of those sloppy disjointed plays...
I know Im old school, but I fully believe you need to have contact to ready your body for contact. And if your executing technique correctly and efficiently, less chance for injury.

It's a double-edged sword! Love gets hurt in the preseason, and people will piss and moan about why is he playing! I've come to the conclusion that people just are happier, I'd they have something to bitch about..??

I thought the Eagles were very sloppy to start as well but recovered. The Packers just never really put it all together. The penalties really hurt but the refs did them no favors on 3 big calls.

Not taking advantage of pre-season games with the starters. So, here we are again talking about a never ending theme with the Packers. And I imagine next year, it will be (again) part of the early season discussion. Not sure why Matt LaFleur doesn't see the light? Three offensive plays in 3 pre-season games...mind-boggling?

Disappointed in the defense - poor tackling and very few stops against the Eagles offense. They did create some turnovers and the safeties looked much better than last year, but the linebackers and Alexander did not look good. Yes, the Eagles offense is loaded, but I expected a bit more from Hafley's D.
Of equal concern was the Packer O-line. Walker had a bad game and Morgan didn't look ready to handle NFL interior D-linemen. They opened no holes for the RBs in the first half and allowed pressure on Love all game. You can have all the weapons you want, but without a decent O-line the offense will not dominate.

But...But...But...All we heard was Gute was an intelligent genius that installed the "Great Franchise MVP QB", brought in a much better RB (not!!!) and put the Packers on the path to multiple Super Bowls because the team is so young. Gute is just absolutely awesome!!!

Clear whiff in the gap on Barkley's TD run. The guy is not a MLB. Cooper's speed is impressive. Let Hopper compete for a starter's job. McDuffie is a sp teams guy.

That last drive by Philly was reminiscent of past years. We just couldn’t stop them. Philly made plays at crunch time and we didn’t. And we left a lot of points out there.

To be fair they had a lot of help from the refs on that last drive. We’d also faced a lot of snaps by that point. The D wasn’t great on its first real airing, but it gave us more than enough to win with on the night.

Or it was an Eagles team that melted down in 23 , has two new coordinators and gave us an opportunity to put the game away early..
They are not going anywhere with Jaire Alexander and Quay Walker in the starting lineup. One used to be good, the other never will be.

Top of the 2nd quarter, Jacobs has had 6 carries for 8 yeards, so put in Wilson and watch him gain 37 yards on 3 straight carries. Then we don't see Wilson carry again until 5 minutes into the 4th quarter where he gains 9 yrds. Offense could have made an in game adjustment and gone with a hotter hand, especially in the sloppy first game of the season. I think Wilson had a block on the Reed carry for TD, and caught both his targets. Maybe Wilson should get a mention for a pretty solid game.
murf7777
September 07, 2024 at 10:27 am
Wilson was a great change of pace for Jacobs. Let’s keep in mind, Jacobs next 10 carries went for 76 yards with 2 catches for 20 more yards. So, hard to say how it would’ve went if we benched Jacobs for Wilson the rest of the game.

These comments crack me up. 3 plays in the preseason and the offense still puts up 29 points. New d coordinator and they have 3 takeaways with 2 more that should have been. When is the last time that happened? Rookie kicker in his first ever pro game and he misses one FG. You would think the world is ending by some of these comments. One of the youngest teams in the league folks. Just like last year, it’s going to take half a season to get going. And let’s not forget how the cap of recent past has affected all this. Take a chill pill.

You didn't get the memo - you're supposed to ridicule and call for multiple firings if the Packers lose. We have a good team. The Eagles have a very good team. My only concern is Love's health, and if we can't get pressure from the front four on the QB, this defensive scheme won't work.

Or… this is one of the three teams they need to beat to be at home in the playoffs.. Philly, SF and Detroit are better. The Rams have a good passing game and we have ( gulp) Jaire Alexander!
We have to prove we can just do better than 9-8. Or else prove you can beat SF, Philly or Detroit ( an improved Detroit ) on the road. They have lost their last two efforts in that regard.
The reason for concern is if you saw that game and didn’t know better you’d think Joe Barry was still here. McKinneys in was a nice play. Wyatt simply fell on an errant snap. Alexander made a nice pick but a typical moron decision to return it. He also got torched AGAIN and still can’t tackle. Philly tried to give this game away and the Packers aren’t talented enough to take advantage of.
This is a win now situation. That’s why they got Jacobs and McKinney and overpaid for a 10 & 10 qb.
They are not the best team in the NFC. 3rd best, maybe as low as 6th best.. yes, you can panic as a fan when they pick up where the left off in SF. I expected a better defense that actually tackled, better qb play and no missed Gags from inside 45. Not to mention the penalties.

September 07, 2024 at 06:47 pm
That’s a nice expectation but every year is its own entity. I’d argue a completely different team. They don’t have to prove anything. I’ve read your posts over the years and it’s hard to imagine you think the d would come out firing on all cylinders after a scheme change. They just have to be good enough early to have a chance at the post season.

Tackling effectively has nothing to do with playing in pre-season games. The Packers need to bring opposing players to the ground.
Linebacker room and O-Line are not adequate and it's past the 11th hour.

Well, at least we got this final exhibition game out of the way and can start working to improve the play of the team. Not playing starters any meaningful snaps in the preseason almost guarantee's this type of game. We saw a little of everything including missed tackles, missed blocks, offsides, holding, too many men on field, poor decision making, doinked field goal (if that was a Carlson miss we'd be crucifying him). Let's not forget bad game planning for both sides of the ball and questionable play calling throughout the game. Where were the screens, quick passes and creativity in the red zone? Nothing deep for CW? Never ever seemed to get in a rhythm offensively as everything was totally disjointed and unconnected from one play to the next. But this is just one game and the season is long. This is the wakeup call. GPG!

I think its mostly because MLF chooses to not play his guys in the pre-season. They seemed NOT on the 'same page' too many times last night, the 'O' and the 'D'. They both had some moments but, Jesus, this is the NFL, you're supposed to be Pros.

Speaking with an Ortho customer of mine. He believes this is likely a grade 3 MCL tear with High ankle sprain.
4-8 weeks usually. Ryan Tannehill should be signed now.

Likewise I'm thinking both. From my experience(s) - a high ankle sprain can take more recovery time than a 3 MCL. If so, I would set 6-8 weeks as a realistice recovery time.

the BIGGEST error in the game was Nixon's running out the kickoff with no time outs and 30 seconds on the clock. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DECIDED BEFOREHAND BY BISACCIA TO TAKE A KNEE ..NO EXCUSE FOR THAT ! NEXT TIME DEMOTION FOR HIM-another historical special teams screw up !!

No doubt that Nixon made a bad decision. But MLF going for 2 early in the game was bad, the play call was worse. They'd had no success running into the middle and strength of Eagles. Seems that MLF is good for at least 1 bad decision per game. That can be the difference vs good teams.

What I love is any of you thinking you have ANY idea at all whether Nixon was coached to take that ball out.
I on the other hand will not assume I know. That being said, I will be logical unlike you:
First off its extremely unlikely that any professional football team allows a player to make that decision on his own at that point in the game. Nixon almost certainly was coached on the play.
It is LIKELY the coaching staff told Nixon to take the ball out no matter what. Whats more likely? A mess on up by the Eagles on a new kick off formation allowing Nixon a great return and a chance to take the lead, or Love going 70 yards from the 30 with no time outs?
Id definitely say the highest probability for a win is letting Nixon take the ball out of the end zone and hoping for a great play. It was the right decision and id do it 100 out of 100 times again.

Didnt see game but your lame calls and game balls suggest a poorly coached game. Basacia should be taken to the wood shed from not having drilled into the heads of the kick returners when to run when not to run. Those mistakes are really on his un coaching ability.
Lame call on LeFluer for refusing to play the ones on defense knowing you have a new scheme, new coach and they need the work to get the kinks our and find what works what doesnt and correct it. The game last night relected bad decisions on his part.
Game ball to the kicker. Hey he is a new guy who missed one field goat but pretty much was solid for having no game experience. Certainly no worse then Carlson.
Lame game. Obviously the defense doesnt have the talent or were just out of shape and not game ready?

Keisean Nixon: Not a good defensive back. Maybe people like Mr. Krim should consider moving Nixon to LB- that's the skill set he seems to display. Tackling? Disruptive on blitzes? Check, and check. Coverage? Watch that game again and watch the coverage. Not good.

Lots of ardent Nixon supporters around here, they don't appreciate my opinion on him, and that's fine. I don't think he's a bad football player, I just don't think he's a starting caliber defensive back.
Nixon as a Special Teams ace / situational player brought in for run support / depth DB? Yes, all of the yes, 100% on board.
Nixon as a starting nickle back? We need to do better.

dark41
September 07, 2024 at 11:20 am
I must have watched a different game.
McKinney and Wilson deserved game balls. Walker did not. Alexander should have been on lame calls, constantly getting beat and missing tackles. MLF going for 2 early in the game and choosing to run it into the strength of Eagles' D, which hadn't worked at all to that point, was a lame call. Wasting all 3 time outs in the first half was a lame call. Missed tackles was a definite lame call. Constantly calling run plays up the middle, which wasn't working at all, was a lame call. Having to settle for 2 early FGs after inheriting excellent field position was a lame call.
I give Hafley credit. He had players in position to make plays pretty much all game long, only to have them whiff on tackles. Maybe not a game ball but better than most are giving him credit for.
Bottom line is that a young and inexperienced Packers roster had chances to win but didn't take advantage on offense or defense. Love made some great plays and dodged at least 2 bullets throwing into coverage. He also had some stinkers, throwing into the dirt and often behind receivers. His receivers, other than Reed (who also dropped a couple), didn't help him much. Other than Love's health, I'm very concerned about our O-line run and pass blocking. The Eagles have a very good front 7 and they dominated our O-line all game long, both running and passing. Next week is a must perform much better for our O-line. Go Pack go!

This is what happens when most starters do not play until first game. Sloppy mistake filled mess. Kind of a hallmark of MLF teams. Almost every penalty was a drive killer or drive extender if on defense. It's amazing the game was close given the penalties.
What I saw was a defense that is clearly better than any we have seen in MLF's tenure. Then offense was quite frankly offensively bad, yet still managed to look good at times. I saw Bullard, and Cooper, come up like shot out of a cannon for run support.
Without Love, this is going to look like Brett Hundley time.
Do you realize how much better this defense was at containing a premier running QB?! Then they just kind of ran out of gas at end due to conditioning and first game and all.
Oppy

I agree with most of this.
However, I'd * your Brett Hundley comment to say "this is going to look like Brett Huntley *playing in Lambeau." Hundley on the road was a different QB and played quite well. I don't think Hundley could handle the pressure and expectation of the home crowd.. he was awful in in Lambeau.
It also didn't help Hundley that the #1 WR on the Packers, Jordy Nelson, gave up and didn't play for Hundley. Hundley was lucky that a young Davante Adams continued to play through the whistle each and every down, though.

I don't know how Matt prepared the team, but whatever he and his staff did should burn the protocol and erase it from the histories.
He said the coaches did things differently for this opener and something about "we'll never do it agin" in a very irritated, peeved tone.
Excessive penalties, missed blocks, missed tackles, dropped passes and poor throws is symptomatic of poor preparation and that is on the coaching staff. The missed tackles were a surprise given how much Hafley says they stress it...looks like they don't practice it much, however.
OL is still a mess in the middle. No dominance whatsoever. Walker was leaky and grabby. Most plays at least one of the 5 got beat and wrecked the timing of the play at the snap.
That is probably going to be the sloppiest game of the season. It better be.

It's not as if the Packers were blown out of the water. Still with all their penalties, miscues, poor tackling and vanilla game plan - they were in it - right up until the end - against one of the top teams in the League! Shall we recall the Denver pre-season game - when the doomsayers began to congregate? So how did the team perform in their next game against the Ravens? Being the first game of the season - I believe that the team deserves a pass. However while the final score did not favor the Packers - the larger loss was the injury to Love. This will certainly de-celerate the offence (my prediction for the next 1-6 weeks as Love recovers). Giving the D an opportunity to garner more of our attention (and enjoyment).
