Curd is the Word: Making Our Wishlist's

Tis the Offseason for Wants

First, welcome to my new weekly article titled "Curd is the Word." Each week, I'll be using this space to spill my thoughts on the current goings-on with the Green Bay Packers and the rest of the NFL. I'll get into the news, occasional player evals, and who knows, I'll probably fall into a random Star Wars-related rant or a beer endorsement here and there. I'll try to somehow make them Packers-related. I hope you enjoy this new weekly journey and before I get too wordy with an intro, let's get into it.

Offseason Wishlists Are Growing

It doesn't matter how your season finishes, you always have your needs and wants when it's all over. How is your team going to improve? Or how is it going to maintain its success? From coaching changes to free agency and the draft after, the fun never stops for an NFL team. So, you bet the fans are involved in how they want it all to go.

Trade rumors have been flying around for weeks with Seattle WR DK Metcalf and Las Vegas DE Maxx Crosby at the forefront. The best part of these rumors for me is that the Seahawks and Raiders haven't given any indication yet whether or not they will be moving on from these players. But I guess that's the nature of the beast. The ideas are put out into the world and they see who bites. While I would love to see either player in Green and Gold, I don't see either being cheap, especially Maxx Crosby. I would assume Crosby would demand a first-round pick and possibly more. I just don't see the Packers swinging that type of a deal. When was the last time the Packers directly traded a first-round pick away for a veteran player? Brett Favre? Oh great, now everyone will tell me how that ended up working out. Brian Gutekunst, like his predecessor Ted Thompson, values his draft picks too much to swing a trade like that.

However, stranger things have happened, and maybe it's time we skip grabbing a first-round project player for a year and use the pick for a veteran who can make a big difference. Maxx Crosby would instantly bolster the pass rush and teams would have to pick their poison. Do they double-team Maxx Crosby or Rashan Gary? Both relentless pass rushers would cause fits for opposing offenses, it's what dreams are made of for us fans. DK Metcalf on the other hand, I think I'd push a 3rd round pick, MAYBE a second if Seattle sends back a little extra. I've been a fan of Metcalf since he was a draft prospect coming out of Ole Miss. With Christian Watson supposed to be absent half the season, the Packers instantly get a deep threat with Metcalf and perhaps a more physical receiver than Watson has been with Metcalf holding about 30 pounds over Watson at the same height.

Then we look towards free agency. Of course, the popular pick is Tee Higgins amongst most fans. The only comment I'm going to make on the subject is that if the Packers do sign Higgins to a long-term deal, I will welcome him. However, I want a stipulation of his contract to be that after he signs, he's driving to Austin Straubel airport and getting on a flight to Madison, WI so he can visit the same specialists Eric Stokes and Christian Watson visited last summer for their hamstring issues. Higgins has missed the same amount of games as Watson has in his career due to injury, with his hamstrings being one of the causes. If he's signing long-term with the Packers, hopefully, UW-Madison specialists can help him as they did Watson and Stokes to ensure he stays healthy for the majority of his Packers career.

Coaching Changes

Over the last few days, we've seen some changes to the Packers' coaching staff. One that hits home the most with me is the loss of linebacker's coach Anthony Campanile to The Jaguars Defensive Coordinator position. Almost exactly a year ago he was hired under Jeff Hafley and I gushed about his hiring on this site. When he was hired I talked about loving his intensity and dedication but I also noted that he was a DC candidate with both the Dolphins and Giants before being passed up for those jobs and coming to Green Bay. So, a one-year stint isn't a big surprise, to be honest. Campanile is to thank for the development of Edgerrin Cooper in his rookie season, hopefully, his tutelage will stick around with Sean Duggan who is considered to be an internal shoo-in for the job given his experience at the position and being a co-defensive coordinator with Jeff Hafley at Boston College. Whether the Packers elevate Duggan or not, hopefully, Campanile's intensity leaves a lasting impact.

After Tom Clements' retirement I had a few ideas for his replacement and the top candidate was Sean Mannion. Well, Mannion was announced as the heir to the Packers' Quarterback's coach position taking over for the legendary Clements. Last year, when Mannion was brought in as an assistant, it almost seemed like he was being groomed as an heir apparent to Tom Clements and now we see that was possibly the truth. Hopefully, Sean Mannion absorbed everything he could from the great coach to help out the Packers' QBs moving forward.

The Packers have hired former Patriots Defensive Coordinator DeMarcus Covington to coach the defensive line. Covington is highly regarded as one of the top young NFL coaches to watch. He invests in his guys going out and playing for each other more than anything and attacking the football with good discipline. Sounds like he'll fit in well with what the Packers are trying to build on defense.

Around the NFL

Well, we're a week removed from the Conference Championship games. And I still feel the same. It was two teams that hadn't been to the Super Bowl in the last 30 years against two teams that have been there multiple times and won in the last seven. It would've been nice to see at least one of the two between the Bills and Commanders make it. But no, we get a Super Bowl rematch from two years ago. The only people who are happy about this Super Bowl are Eagles and Chiefs fans and of course Swifties. I'm not the type of fan to "boycott" the Super Bowl, because I can't help it, it's the Super Bowl, I'm a football fan, and I'm watching. I survived the annoyance of watching the Patriots in the Super Bowl year after year, I think I'll survive the Chiefs and Eagles.

I will say I think the Eagles showed a bit of dominance in their win over Washington, cementing that they deserve to make the trip. There were a few questionable calls in the game but overall it didn't completely change the outcome and I look forward to seeing if Saquon Barkley can bring running backs back into the spotlight in the biggest game of the year.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, I think luck follows them everywhere. The Bills were a good team and came close, but some questionable play calls did them no favors. Who constantly runs QB sneaks in short-yardage situations expecting to convert each time? Who do they think they are? The Eagles? A little creativity wouldn't have hurt them. Even though one of those sneaks Josh Allen had the first down but did not, we won't talk about that now.

In the next week

This week we'll likely see some more changes in the coaching carousel around the league with some intrigue in the future of Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich interviewing for the Texans OC opening. I'll get into that and Super Bowl predictions next time.

Until then, have a good week Cheeseheads, and Go Pack Go.

Campanile was Hafley's prize hire for his solid staff. Many were applauding the DC's ability to get him to the Packers to coach LBs...as he was forecasted to be a likely D coordinator himself. That didn't take long!

Reading up on Duggan, he seems like a logical choice to replace Campanile. Young man, only 31 years old, but has been teaching LBs for many years already. He has a solid room to coach up, if he gets the role.

Mannion was a good choice to replace Clements. He obviously knows the QB position carving out a long NFL career as a sold back up. He may not have had the talent to start, but must have the brains to stick in the league for so many years as a dependable #2.

It seems LaFleur will continue to be the play caller again in 2025 as Stenovich hunts to become a real OC. Oh well. Status quo here we go.

"It seems LaFleur will continue to be the play caller in 2025......."

Yeah, I am seeing the same message LP and I don't like it. If LaFleur retains play calling I see more bungled clock management, incorrect challenge flags, and HC inattention to special teams and defense in the Packer's future.

The one thing he brought to the packers was his playcalling and inventiveness. That you are advocating he abandon that leaves him where exactly. he doesn't appear overly adept at man management - he rolled over for Rodgers, he fucked up with Jaire, his hires and loyalty to bad hires is often baffling. How would abandoning his one strength improve the team?

Two points Bitter:

(1) I am not advocating LaFleur vacate the offense entirely. He has all week to put his stamp on the offensive game plan - something he is very good at. And he is free to talk with the OC (presumed play caller) about offensive calls during the game. LaFleur will still have plenty of opportunities to direct the offense even if he isn't the in-game play caller (the Packers won't lose his offensive genius).

(2) However somebody needs to do a much better job of in-game management and it is on LaFleur to fix that problem. He could delegate the job, but to whom??? Who else has the skill set and gravitas to manage the OC, DC and STC? I really believe LaFleur needs to step up and do the in-game management as the next evolution of his coaching growth and he has pretty well proven over six seasons that he can't call the plays and consistently manage the game too. So.....relinquish the in-game play calling to Steno and manage the game.

Regression of ML offense game planning / Regression of QB1 / Regression of entire WR room and lack of scheming players open / Overuse of Reed as a punt returner expected to get tackled at full speed impact then be used in a movement scheme and run routes after being blasted in a return = STUPID / Criminal Underuse of the only skill players to consistently catch the ball of Jacobs and Kraft in the pass game

And yet the Packers had the #8 ranked offense in the league this year (points per game). Wonder what they could have accomplished if they weren't such morons?

I don't think it makes a difference if the HC is calling plays or not regarding incorrect challenge flags. Most of that responsibility is or should be delegating to people who have instant replay and relay to the HC what he should do. Mlf is highly regarded as a play caller and I hope he stays doing just that.

In addition, they can hire so many coaches that his attention to special teams and defense should also be delegated. It's up to the HC to have the right people on the bus to make the right decisions. Whether he calls plays or not doesn't change what his coordinators do during the game. Mlf doesn't even have experience being a DC or I doubt much experience to do with the special team coordinator. So what value would he bring during the game? Even if he could provide valuable advice, it's not like he's calling plays when the defense is on the field.

Here's an example of what I am talking about when I say "oversight of the defense". In the last Bears game the Packers were in the wrong defense for the last play prior to the Bears kicking the winning field goal. Hafley had the defense in a deep prevent defense to stop any throws to the end zone. He should have been trying to prevent the Bears from getting into field goal range. Both LaFleur and Hafley acknowledged after the game the Packers were in the wrong defense.

If LaFleur were paying attention to the defense, he should have called a TO and asked Hafley why they were trying to prevent a TD instead of a field goal. A HC that wasn't wrapped up being an OC should have prevented that mistake.

Regarding the challenge flags, you are correct that that should be someone else's (booth?) responsibility, but then why was LaFleur's explanation on a number of blown challenge calls this year that he was following his gut? There should never be a gut call on a challenge flag. That should be an assigned duty.

The Packers are missing some in-game management issues that other good teams don't miss and I think it is costing them games. I really don't care how LaFleur solves this problem, but he can't continue with the blown clock management issues, challenge flag mistakes and other in-game problems of the past few years. I personally think he is overloaded with in-game concerns and he doesn't multitask well. Delegate the play calling or delegate the other issues (not sure how though), but fix the damn problems.

Hopefully they're just trade rumors.
Is Dk the missing piece, John Jefferson
Was suppose to be?
And I have a hard time believing Crosby is
Reggie White.
And Higgins is a No comment when you consider
Gute wouldn’t help Rodgers.
This isn’t a wishlist. It’s sabotage.

Coaching changes-
For all you MLF doubters.
Why are so many packers coaches
Still being considered elsewhere?
Their getting the most the can out of Gute’s picks.

When you look at the chiefs- Eagles
Look at the players Gute could of had.
It’s more than Luck. It’s the draft.

Putting money on Metcalf would be a mistake. Not a solid route runner. Get Two, wide receivers from this draft. I'm sticking with Restrepo. No more post-up guys, lacking the quicks.

#23 Tyleik Williams DT OSU fast off the snap, stays low.

#46 Jack Bech WR TCU Restrepo gone top of the 2nd.
This guy a Jordy clone.

#87 Jared Wilson OC Georgia will be fastest center to test.

#123 Cobee Bryant CB Kansas Cover corner & Jaire stays.

#131 Jordan Burch DE Oregon will not fall to this spot.

#200 Jacob Parrish CB K State He will go rd three, after Senior Bowl.

#229 Jah Joyner DE Gophers He will rise up boards.

Gutedkunst is now on the clock. He couldn't pull it off with a HOF QB, now he's got to skate.

I think you follow Dane Brugler.
I prefer a WR now. He'd start.
The WRs have shown how fragile they are.
And a Wr helps Jordan Love. (With Watson out.)
But- I like Jalan Royals more than Bech.

We still need to see what Gute does with Alexander.
But the question is- Continue the rebuild?
Or what can we do to win the Division?
I prefer trading back.

Campbell is too green and they have the chaser in Walker. I really liked Alexander's play in the MAC. Savion Jones was a player for LSU, but is no longer a dark horse candidate. He may go in the third after the Senior Bowl. I would still move up for Scourton. I like Jackson as a smart football player. The safety from Georgia. Bullard was a wasted pick when Bullock and Kam Kinchens were staring them in the face. They have to move some of the dead weight, starting with Gary. Now you have to pray they don't end up being at the bottom of the Norris.

Never read any draft guides, but Pauline's rankings before the Draft. Rank This! ,Sapp would say. When you watch the College Games, the astute color guy will highlight the player, or they will stand out by their play. With this streaming bullshit, you can watch all the games and rewind for review. I would keep Jaire on a refi with Incentives. They had their window with Rodgers. This guy whiffed on too many guys as starters and depth. Drafting Sternberger over Terry McLaurin would get you fired any other place. Third Contract for Clark was nonsense. The deal will be how Love shows in the fall. If he plateaued, then Kleen Haus.

I like the Covington hire and hope he can get more out of Clark and LVN as well as be more creative with line stunts which would help the Packer pass rush. The Packer's line stunts were either non-existent or very vanilla under Rebrovich. I only watched a couple of Patriots games this year, but their D-line was active and stunted frequently and I would like to see more of that from the Packers.

I doubt Gute makes any splash FA signings this year. Two mid range free agents to plug holes at (2 of 3) OL, CB and WR seems more likely. I think Gute needs to keep some cap powder dry for signing his own players next year.

I would think Cox and Mosby are also quick enough to stunt but never saw them used that way. There are enough DL that could stunt that I would like to see more of it done, just to challenge the opposing OL. If you always play vanilla, it makes the opposing OL's job that much easier.

They ran quite a few DT/DE stunts. Early in the season Wyatt was pretty effective stunting but LVN was pretty much miss with the very occasional hit. Not sure which game but there was one where Clark wrapped around and pushed the QB into someone else for a sack a couple times.

As far as DT/DT stunts Brooks and Wooden seemed to have knack with those in '23 but weren't as effective this year. That's something I hope they can reinvent with the new D line coach.

It'll be a FA WR1 / DE or DL......Any of those 3 plus a better OC or OL period would help a bunch. Could also be a couple solid Vet CB's. Hopefully the new DL coach is great. WR's coach hopefully gets the Axe....horrible regression of the unit.

What qualifies Mannion to be a QB coach? He played back-up QB for several teams, was hired as an offensive assistant in 2024, by the Packers, and is now a QB coach? Does that mean most back-up QBs are now qualified to coach high dollar QB's?

Does Mannion have the aptitude and persistence to fundamentally change Love's mechanics and footwork issues?

@NFlfan, you are implying that Love has not had good footwork and mechanics. Who has been the QB coach during the time Love has been a starting QB? Tom Clements. Why are you being critical of the Mannion selection and not the Clements? Obviously in your opinion Clements has been a failure with Love.

But the whole NFL seems to think highly of Clements so you keep your mouth shut about him and keep up your constant negativity towards everyone else in the Packers. Keep walking around with that dark cloud over you, I bet you are fun to spend time with Eeyore.

Why is Tom Clements held in such high regard? His three years from 2022 to 2024 don't show any great coaching of Rodgers or Love. Love had an outlier during the last half of the 2023 season, but that is proving to be just that. Here's the qb stats from Clements final time with the Packers:

Aaron Rodgers 2022 stats: 26 tds, 12 ints, 3695 yards along with a 91.1 passer rating

Jordan Love 2023 stats: 32 tds, 11 ints, 4159 yards along with a 96.1 passer rating

Jordan Love 2024 stats: 25 tds, 11 ints, 3389 yards along with a 96.7 passer rating

I don't see these stats as being great. If Mannion produces like this, how can you call him a good qb coach? Label it as an injury riddled 2024, if you must, for Love, but that's just an excuse. Same in 2022 for Rodgers.
What he did for Willis might show some great coaching. Willis played good enough, when needed to perform, to merit an open competition at qb for 2025.

I think Willis--who was playing free-wheeling college ball--matured on TN's bench and the Packers reaped the benefits. His 2024 preseason film was pretty good, I just think Titans had closed the door already and decided to walk away. I don't think he was in town long enough for Clements to really have made much difference.

I think we can agree that the one of the causes of Love's regression is his poor footwork and mechanics.
(I would also add the deficiences of the O-Line, receiver inability to create distance, drops, etc and odd play-calling)

However, if we isolate Love's mechanics and footwork as one of the major problems, then he will need to fundamentally change some ingrained bad habits which is very difficult to do, especially when the pocket is collapsing. Rodgers, whatever one may think of him, made it a priority to radically transform his mechanics.
His 'golden arm' is largely the result of an understanding of mechanics, leg strength, torque, etc. He has always said that his arm 'is along for the ride.' Rodgers also got sloppy towards the end because he could get away with it and Love likely thinks he can do the same. I also think Love over-values his arm and under-values mechanics.
Tom Clements was very instrumental in helping Rodgers gain that level of expertise. Clements was also a QB and an OC
I wish GB would make more effort to look further afield for pivotal position coaches-they interviewed one external QB coach candidate. Mannion is a back-up QB with none of Tom Clement's credentials. Love is a very expensive investment who is showing signs of regression and what I see is a lackluster effort to find the very best candidate to address it.

we can't agree on anything you harpy little troll. are you suggesting that Tom Clements was somehow better prepared to be a quarterback coach because he played quarterback in the CFL? I realize your knowledge of the Packers is thin and built mostly as a jealous fan of a competitor (Bears), but jeez try and do some research.

Maybe I just don't remember, but when the Packers brought Campanile on board last year he wasn't hailed as the second coming of Buddy Ryan. There was no "Great God Almighty! The Packers just stole a future DC to be their LB coach and run game coordinator." The guy had interviewed for the Giants DC position and been passed over. So he landed in Green Bay after he coached linebackers, wide receivers and DBs at Rutgers, Boston College and the U of Michigan, before a three year stint as LB coach with the Dolphins.

What I recall most about his hiring is the passion he brought, mostly in the form of colorful language. The Jags made him their DC. The Jags, people. Let's look at their DC history:

Ryan Nielsen - 2024

Mike Caldwell - 2022-2023

Joe Cullen - 2021

Todd Wash - 2016-2020

Bob Babich 2013-2015

Mel Tucker 2009-2012
.
Gregg Williams 2008

Mike Smith 2003-2007

John Pease 2002

Gary Moeller 2001

Dom Capers 1999-2000

Capers' record as the team's defensive coordinator was 21-11-0, making him the most successful defensive coordinator in Jacksonville Jaguars history.

I'm happy for Anthony and wish him nothing but success in Jacksonville. There must be dozens of equally qualified coaches available to fill the role in Green Bay.

I hope Covington can get more out of his linemen. LVN has tools, but has not accomplished much. Isn’t that the kind of guy a coach looks forward to working with?

Wish list: pass rusher(interior or edge) corner, receiver, and figure out center and how the O-line will look. Oh, and manage the clock better. Is that asking for too much?

Maybe too early, but edge rusher Shemar Stewart of Texas A&M is a prototype Gutey pick: 6-6, 290, “chiseled out of granite” (just like all of us) but raw with very limited production. I’m hoping he becomes someone else’s project that doesn’t live up to expectations.

If Gutenkunst values his draft picks so much why has he wasted so many on projects and reaches?

Sad to say, because I was cheering for the Bills, but the Chiefs outplayed them. Their offense unfortunately woke up at just the right time, and Kelsey didn't even have anything to do with it. As for the QB sneak by Allen, it didn't look like a first down to me. The first ref gave a generous spot, but from that angle he couldn't see that Allen had the ball behind his body. Then a ref who could actually see the ball came in and made what looked to me like the correct spot.

I was surprised to hear that Tee Higgins has missed the same amount of games as Christian Watson due to injury, so I looked it up. Higgins has played five seasons, while Watson has only played three. Details, details.
