Curd is the Word: Excitement and Sorrow All at Once
Departures and optimism dominated this past week for the Packers
By GregMeinholz

First off, Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there. If it weren't for my Dad taking control of the living room TV to turn on the Packers, a good 33 years ago, it's anyone's guess whether or not I'd be as passionate about Packers football as I am today. So, thank you, Dad, for that and everything else. Now let's get to the latest week in Packers history.
Jaire Alexander
You can count me in for being a part of the optimistic crowd this offseason. Watching no trade transpire during the NFL Draft and then seeing the Packers draft zero cornerbacks made me think, "You know, perhaps Jaire Alexander will still be a Packer in 2025." Well, on Monday, that all came crashing down when the Packers officially released the All-Pro corner.
To put it simply, players like Jaire Alexander don't grow on trees. Off the field, he had a personality that you couldn't help but love. He was serious when he needed to be, but was as fun-loving and goofy as ever when the time was appropriate. On the field, when he was available, he was one of the best corners in football. I never worried about receivers when they had 23 over them. I knew Jaire would have them covered. And if he did get beat, that receiver needed to savor the flavor because they weren't going to taste it again.
Unfortunately, though, we have to go back to the comment "when he was available." Alexander only played in 34 of a possible 66 regular-season games between 2021 and 2024. For a player that commands the type of cap hit that Jaire Alexander does, that type of availability just isn't going to cut it. Word is that Alexander and the Packers just couldn't agree on a contract restructure. Words have floated around that the Packers would not offer any guaranteed money, which didn't sit well with Alexander's camp, so it resulted in his eventual release.
You can't exactly blame either side on this one, in my opinion. The Packers know what Alexander is worth when he's healthy, but they don't want to pay that when he's not. They also don't want to guarantee any money to him, given his injury history. It's hard to shell out a couple of million dollars guaranteed in an agreement when there's a chance the other side of that agreement can't guarantee even a higher-than-average chance of upholding their side of the deal. For Jaire, he knows what he's worth when healthy; he's not going to just lie down and play for a big discount because of something out of his control. These are unfortunate circumstances, but I wish Jaire all the best in the future, just not when he's playing against the Packers, if it ever happens.
As far as replacing him goes, the Packers are counting on their free agent acquisition, Nate Hobbs, to make an impact, along with Keisean Nixon stepping up. I hope that we see breakouts from Carrington Valentine and Kalen King as well. The organization is trusting these guys to make a difference, so I'll get on that wagon as well. It would be nice to see the young corners take a lead role.
Mark Murphy
He's not gone yet, but in just under a month, Packers' President and CEO Mark Murphy will be retiring following his 70th birthday on July 13th. In the last practice of OTAs, Murphy led the team in a breakdown. This will likely be the last time he is on a practice field with the team in his position, and when those players return for training camp, Murphy will likely already be retired.
In these final weeks of his time with the team, we'll hear a lot. Many who acted like he was a terrible President, some who thought he was outstanding, but there's one thing for sure: when Mark Murphy walks out of Lambeau for the final time as an employee, he will leave behind a legacy that took the Packers' roots in Green Bay and drove them several miles deeper into the ground. He will be remembered by many for bringing the NFL Draft to Green Bay in his final year, but his creation of the TitleTown District will be one of his greatest achievements. That district helps bring an income in for the Green Bay Packers that has nothing to do with football. The income from the TitleTown District helps the Packers remain competitive and helps them keep their place in Green Bay a little easier.
The ovation may not be as loud as it may be for a legendary player or coach in Green Bay, but Murphy deserves his accolades and a well-earned retirement.

Isaiah Simmons
Lastly, I'm going to talk about a reason for optimism. Whenever you see a player signed to a new team who was a high draft pick a few years ago, but never really lived up to the hype, you tend to think, "Who cares, but what if?" The reason is that you temper expectations given that they haven't risen above the label of an average player. When you see a player drafted in a position that should be an automatic difference maker, and they're not, you just see them as a seat filler and write them off right away. But what if, for whatever reason, their previous lack of success was not entirely due to issues on their end? What if they weren't a "bust" and they were just misused, or not put in the best position to be successful? The Packers are hoping that could be the case with Isaiah Simmons.
Simmons was drafted 8th overall in 2020. Simmons came out of college a freak athlete with the ability to play nearly every position on the defense. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Dick Butkus award for best linebacker in the nation. Unfortunately, after his drafting by the Arizona Cardinals, he just never panned out. He's had some flashes of good play in his time with both the Cardinals and the New York Giants, but nothing even close to the gamestopper we were promised when he was drafted. It seems, though, that Simmons may have found what he lacked in Arizona and New York. That could be a defensive coach willing to help him focus on one area and motivate him to do his best at that.
According to Simmons, Jeff Hafley is a good fit for him, and he's eager for a fresh start, just focusing on being a linebacker. Simmons states that a lack of snaps with the Giants lit a fire under him. We've seen Jeff Hafley turn around this Packers' defense, turning them from a weakness to a strength in one season. Could we see Hafley bring Isaiah Simmons even just a little close to what his expectations were in 2020? We can definitely hope so.

No one is indispensable.
Hardwork + Consistency + Discipline x Patience = Success!!
Alexander became Unpredictable, when unavailable.
The plan just got changed. The goal didn’t.

Now is the time of year to be optimistic. I don’t mean blind, untethered optimism, such as “Eric Torkelson will rush for more yards than Eric Dickerson”, but more along the lines of “What if Simmons can make an impact?”
We’d all take that.

One main difference heading into this season from past years are the number of players who are rockets.
Team speed has increased a good deal with Simmons the latest addition who is fast.
This training camp looks to be excellent with good competition at many spots. Some good players are likely not to make the final squad which is a good sign.
On Father's Day it's t-minus 38 days until training camp and I can't wait.

Harry,
You are right about team speed esp. on the defensive side of the ball. Alexander will be missed, but he wasn't available most of the last 2 seasons. Wish GB could have gotten a draft pick, but who wants a player that you can't count on.
TC will be a lot of fun to watch....sorry I won't be able to see it from North Texas.

"Now is the time of year to be optimistic. I don’t mean blind, untethered optimism".
He'll make a couple of plays in camp, and he'll be thought of as the second coming of_______
Can the Packers find somewhere/something he can do, IDK, but after five years, and supposedly, "came out of college a freak athlete with the ability to play nearly every position on the defense" and not being able to make a necessary level of impact at any of those positions.
This does not move my optimism level needle, and yes, I do have one, it just doesn't move so easily, by those who cannot settle into a position of the many claimed playable.

Yeah, I get more fun from limiting the amount of cartwheels, and head-stand spinning with every occurrence that comes around. But, you can certainly maintain the 'Cuckoo for Cocoa puffs' reaction over everything.

Reality is never as bright and blind as your optimism, but it also isn't dark as you imagine.
Today is Father's Day, and I wonder how many are disappointed when they get 12 ties as gifts, while expecting something actually useful to their needs or the Mother who gets 12 toasters, because their hopes for certain things were beyond the reasonable ability to provide.
Maybe Simmons isn't another tie or toaster, maybe he'll be a wallet or toaster oven instead.

Mark Murphy is retiring from a paid position, but is he leaving Green Bay, is he renouncing his influence on Titletown, what kind of soft influence might he wield-on Ed Policy-on the board of directors? This was/is a guy who upended a set of rules put in place by men of greater character; he crossed boundaries that most fans do not recognize. I would not be surprised in the least if he continued to exert clandestine influence. I don't see him giving up control.
He still looks energetic and youthful.
I'd like a more in-depth article about his retirement plans. Is he going towards something that will engage him enough? Hopefully his retirement will consist of more than a few trips to see family.

If you ask nicely, maybe he'll invite you over to a vacation cabin he owns somewhere and he can personally go over his retirement plans with you.
Maybe YOU then can write that in-depth article and share it with the rest of us. I know I'd be waiting anxiously on your fair riveting take on the man.

@13TC-Perhaps you could scratch beyond the surface a bit more and seek to understand why Green Bay has poor foundational vet depth, few Pro-bowl level caliber players and can't make it past the first round in the play-offs.
A little intellectual curiosity about stuff goes a long way in life.

I'm a fan of the Green Bay Packers. Have been since I was around 12. I grew up not far from the stadium. I enjoy watching them play. But that's about it, because I have other interests, family, grandkids, hobbies, etc. I'm sure this will shock your sensibilities, but I've never even owned a jersey!!
I have no interest in "scratching beyond the surface", whatever the hell that means. And my intellectual curiosity is channeled towards things a little deeper than a football team that provides me 3 hours of entertainment a few times a year. I do come on here every now and then because I find it entertaining.
But, by all means, you keep on digging. I'm sure there's a juicy conspiracy theory out there somewhere that you'll uncover. It kind of makes sense that you're so infatuated with Rodgers. Carry on!

that's a very good point.
my opinion is policy will not allow murphy to influence him. but the board that is another story...there is danger there, the house builder could influence them.
but considering murphy was a godell servant and considering he put his face on the tush push ban (what a lost!) because godell asked him to do it....I think godell will give him some consultant role in the nfl and may be murphy will stay far from the packers, FINALLY.

@GP-Ed Policy is an unknown quantity and seems to be a non-football guy. He will likely do something small like give football operations to Gutekunst. Murphy's influence gave us Gutekunst and LaFleur-neither of whom is up to dealing with the Northern Division's newly strengthened rivals.

The list of super talent and incredible play coming out of college only to be a bust is a long dusty trail. The "Hope" of picking a player that was left for dead from this list is a fools game. Yet when you are desperate hope and a fresh angle of trials is all you got. We'll know quickly (within the first few games he plays) if this college gem is dusted off and contributing to an expected level OR just another lesson to shy from that fools game dusty list of busts.
We're desperate so I'm on the band wagon "HOPING" also

Simmons hasn't quite lived up to his draft status but people are talking like he's some type of scrub. In 3 seasons at Arizona he had 308 tackles (211 solo) 15 TFL, 13 QB hits, 8 forced fumbles, 8.5 sacks, 5 interceptions with 2 returned for TDs, and 2 fumble recoveries. I doubt that he's forgotten how to play after 2 seasons of misuse in NY. He's a better player than McDuffie. He's played 85 NFL games and 44 in college without missing a game due to injury.

If he could repeat his last season at Arizona he'd look like a great addition. In 2022 he had 99 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 Ints, 2 FF and a FR. His pressure rate of 15.5% wasn't great, last year Quay was at 24% and Cooper at 25%, but good enough to occasionally blitz him.
The not so good was the pass coverage where he gave up 4 TDs, 77% completions, a 104 passer rating and over 300 yards after the catch. The numbers got better in '23 with the Giants when they had him playing closer to the LOS. '24 was terrible again under a different DC. Maybe just focusing on one position helps him in this area but it's pretty clear you don't want him on the field in obvious passing situations. That's fine, if he's the 3rd starter in base he's only going to play 20-25 snaps a game and they can have him covering 5 yards and in.

I'm leery of pass coverage stats for linebackers because their assignments vary. I wonder if Simmons was getting matched up against slot receivers or was dinged for catches made in his part of the field when he was playing zone, even though he may not have been the player who was mainly responsible.
It seems to me that he will be a clear favorite to play ahead of Ty'Ron Hopper, and he should also be able to move ahead of Isaiah McDuffie into that third LB spot. The depth at LB is looking very good!

June 15, 2025 at 03:09 pm
Yes, I think the Hopper/Simmons duel could yield a decent 3rd linebacker (for the limited number of snaps when 3 linebackers are on the field.)

June 16, 2025 at 09:23 am
McDuffie is a try-hard guy and a Hafley guy, but--frankly--they can do better. You have to ask yourself how much he plays in 2024 IF Cooper and Walker stayed mostly healthy. The Packers only played 3 off-ball LB about 33% of the time.
Packers kept 5 off-ball LB last season and Hopper was almost exclusively an STer. Wilson was a core STer and filled in admirably when injuries hit--he's gone. Walker and Cooper are starters but after that, they have McDuffie and Hopper as holdovers and Simmons as an experienced vet. Welch is strictly a core STer, and they need to figure out how Oliver fits into all this. Two of those four (Hopper, Simmons, McDuffie, Welch) probably don't make the 53, and if Simmons sticks and looks good, the question of whether they keep Walker or Simmons might be an interesting one.

Too much is often times better than too little. Especially in the injurious NFL. A good problem for the LB room this training camp.

Great, another "freak athlete." Do they have separate column for those on their draft board? "What if they weren't a "bust" and they were just misused?" Misused how exactly? You could say that about how many players? So he couldn't latch on with the GIANTS? Did I read that correctly?
It's easy to be optimistic when it's mid-June and they only just started. Temper expectations? Yeah, that's the right idea, give him a shot. But it's much more like, come to Green Bay, aka Hogwarts, WI, where all players magically transform into something they couldn't with two other NFL teams.

The Giants didn't want to keep Saquon Barkley or Xavier McKinney either. Not that Simmons is anywhere near that level. I'm just saying the Giants may not be great at using and judging talent.
