Counting on Rookie Linemen to Step Up
The Packers will need more production from their young defensive linemen
By GregMeinholz

Handing the Detroit Lions a loss on Thanksgiving, spoiling their decades-long tradition, and sweeping the season series was about as good as it got last Thursday as far as regular-season wins were concerned. The Green Bay Packers' top performers all played a big role in the win, and Cheeseheads received the satisfaction of enjoying their feast with a win. But there was one loss on Thanksgiving that made the win bittersweet.
Defensive Tackle Devonte Wyatt suffered an ankle injury in the game that will end his 2025 season. Wyatt has been having the best season of his career to this point, registering four sacks and six tackles for losses. After the departure of Kenny Clark, Wyatt has been leaned on heavily in run-stopping situations, and he has risen to the challenge.
There's no big-time free agent to be signed, and the trade deadline has long since passed. So, there are no new starting defensive linemen to bring in to help soften the blow. Per the Packers' depth chart, it would be assumed that Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks will be relied on to be run stuffers for the remainder of the season. This will likely be the case, but they won't be on the field every down. Rookies Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse will need to play a larger role going forward to help the Packers' defense, which ranked 8th in the league against the run, remain at that position.
Warren Brinson has only played about 15.7% of the snaps the Packers' defense has faced this season, but he's seen a large uptick in that number during the last two games. Brinson played 47.7% of defensive snaps against the Vikings and about 50% against the Lions on Thanksgiving. He came up with his first career sack against Minnesota, sharing it with Isaiah McDuffie. The former sixth-round draft pick has been a healthy scratch for a few games this season, but the more snaps he's received, the more improved he's looked.
Nazir Stackhouse has been just under Warren Brinson in terms of snaps played this season, with 14.7% despite being active for all twelve games so far. He hasn't quite seen the uptick in snaps that Brinson has as of late, but he has done a decent job of clogging up the middle of the line when he is on the field. At 6'4 327 lbs, he is the heaviest defensive lineman on the Packers' roster, so he is your classic space-eater up the middle. At Georgia, Stackhouse's stats weren't what jumped off the page about him; it was his ability to absorb blockers and double teams, opening up space for his teammates to make plays. His power has also been noticeable in what little action he has gotten this season, with him getting enough penetration up front to throw off a running back, putting him right into the arms of Stackhouse's teammates.
Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden are the two defensive tackles who will be relied on the most. They have the most experience, so naturally, they will see the field the most in Devonte Wyatt's absence. But this is Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse's time to show what they are capable of. They are rookies; they are going to be tested. On Sunday, as soon as Chicago sees 91 or 93 on the field, it's almost a guarantee they're going to try to exploit them. Both of these players got to this point in their football careers by being the prevailing underdog. They both climbed the ladder at Georgia and had to fill in for starters who had left. They did that with enough success to reach the NFL, and now it's time for them to do it at the next level.
The success of the 2025 Packers may rely on both of these young players to step up. We will learn very quickly whether they are up for the challenge.

Jordan Riley signed to the active roster from the Giants practice squad.

Yes, and he’s not what most descriptions suggest anymore. A less interesting Stackhouse when drafted, he lost significant weight to try and become a more every down player. He’s certainly was then pushed down the pecking order this off season by new arrivals despite showing some signs of progress late last year.
I posted on thid under polluted thoughts, so forgive me for rehashing that, but I think it’s interesting, and makes the signing potentially more so, more importantly. How far along he’s progressed to being a multi-role player is unclear:
He was a pure run stuffer. In 6 years he managed one sack in college, compared to Stackhouse’s 3 in 5 years. That said, he played pretty well in the one game against the Eagles in which he had meaningful snaps as a rookie, apparently:

After 2023, they had him lose weight: 20 plus by pounds, in the hope he could become more versatile. He’d now about the same weight as Brinson and significantly under that of Stackhouse. Over the final 6 games of last year, he got some action as starter with Lawrence out. He finished with eight tackles, including four solo stops, three tackles for loss, and a QB hit.
So no miracle transformation but signs he’s not merely a clogger. The Giants, however, invested heavily at adding more athletic options in the off season, so he’s not really had a chance to show progress.
At his new weight, he may be the missing link at DT between the bigger Stackhouse and the 300 pounds soaking wet Wooden. Here’s hoping. On paper he may be a more interesting find and fit than suggested here or than I expected us to find. If he can keep Wooden fresher and focussed on penetrating more during mixed downs. that in instructors be a win

Johnny Randle played at 290 Lbs. It is about quickness off the snap, staying low and up top power. If he can cover some of the rotation, he may work out for the defense?

As a side note, I don't love it that the Packers have been so vague about Wyatt's injury. Is it a broken ankle, severe ligament damage, or both? They were secretive about Eric Stokes' injury, and it turned out to be worse than imagined. We only found out later that he had two injuries to the same leg, had to have surgery that included a plate with screws, and was confined to a wheelchair while he recovered. He was not the same player when he returned. I hope it's not that bad for Wyatt.

They rarely say much as these days such information is considered personal. Ankle breaks tend to result in associated ligament damage of anything from minimal to significant severity.
Unless Wyatt volunteers information, we are likely to get nothing more till they start talking about when he might practice. That may be, in fact it’s probably going to be, into the off season. His option is guaranteed fully, so he has no incentive the injury and the team is locked in, in cap terms. The result is no rush for player or team now they’ve confirmed it won’t be before the Super Bowl.

The DTs that need to step up are the guys that have been playing and practicing for a couple of years, like Wooden and Brooks. These are our starting DTs the rest of the way, right? How many people saw that coming in June?

Brinson and Stackhouse have really poor grades via PFF, but they certainly pass the eye test. I remember one play in the Cardinals game where the two of them took on double teams and occupied 4 lineman, they didn't BUDGE and the run play was stuffed for no gain. I'm not saying they're the next coming of Gilbert Brown and BJ Raji, but Brooks and Wooden absolutely can't do it on their own, they're both shy of 300lbs. Brinson and Stackhouse will fill in just fine when needed and GB just signed a 340lb third year who will help with big formations. Let's shut the run game down and make Williams beat us.

I see this AM on Bleacher Report a Packer writer also says to bring in Wilkerson for a look!

There are a lot of pundits for a number of teams saying “bring Wilkins in.” Yet he’s not working out for anyone. He did visit some teams to conduct private medical exams (presumably hoping to counter the Raiders statements) on him earlier, but that may be for next year as much as this. There is a reason Wilkins isn’t having current medical visits let alone working out for teams. My suspicion is it is simply that he’s not close to being healthy.
