Cory's Corner: The Packers Found Their Guy

The Packers not only found a great kicker, they also learned that their culture is very strong.

You don’t know how important a kicker is until you don’t have one.

Kicker might be the most overrated position in football. They don’t block, tackle, catch, pass or run. Yet, the kicker is responsible for a lot more than you think.

There were 12,464 points scored in the 2024 regular season. Of all those points, 4,002 were scored by a kicker. In other words, 32 percent of all the NFL’s scoring from this past season was thanks in part to the strong leg of a kicker.

And that’s why you cannot take the kicking position for granted. The Packers had a tough choice to make when they decided not to bring back the franchise’s all-time leading scorer in Mason Crosby after the 2022 season. That turned out to be a good decision because Crosby only played three more games for the Giants the following season.

The Packers thought they had their guy when they drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. But after missing six field goals and five extra points his rookie season, even Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was developing an upset stomach.

In training camp, Gutekunst brought in competition to unseat Carlson. Brayden Narveson won the job, but after missing five field goals in six games, Gutekunst made another change.

This time he brought in veteran Brandon McManus who came to Green Bay amid off-field controversy. McManus was a proven kicker, but I didn’t want McManus to come here and spoil the locker room.

I was wrong, because the Packers culture proved to be stronger than any negativity, while being the perfect salve. Right from the start, McManus showed what he was about after nailing a 45-yard game-winning field goal to beat the Texans in his Packers debut.

McManus wasn’t just good, he was great. He was 20-for-21 kicking field goals, with his lone miss being a 46-yarder against Detroit in the rain.

And that’s why McManus is the next guy. He understands how important the fabric of this locker room is, and he understands what it means to be the next guy. It means being accountable to everyone and giving credit whenever possible.

Are the Packers a surefire Super Bowl team with McManus? Obviously not, because there are still other questions to answer along the offensive and defensive lines as well as the defensive backfield. But if No. 17 is not in a Packers uniform, a Super Bowl is so much tougher.

He turns 34 in July and Gutekunst shouldn’t think twice about giving him a four-year deal. And the reason is simple: We all know what the long road of kicking uncertainty looks like.

McManus earned his keep. There's no arguing that. In the context of reliability you can count on for those 1/3 of points your team will score, he came up aces.

The question isn't whether to keep him, but for how long? He's reaching the age where he's coming up on his best if used by date, and four years might put the Packers in the same boat with him as they were with Mason.

But maybe that's not such a bad thing after all.

Crosby lasted till about 38, just. I don’t know why we’d offer a 4 year deal (though NFL deal lengths don’t always mean much if not guaranteed). That said, I could see him getting other offers, so the imperative is to lock him up for at least the next 2 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if a kicker can play til he's 40. Although they DO block, and tackle.

McManus was another top player that Gute brought in along with Jacobs and McKinney. He is still young for a kicker at 33, and making 20 of 21 kicks in the rain/cold/wind is not easy. Some of the best NFL kickers did well into their early 40's (Blanda, Anderson, Murray, Bryant, Groza). Packers lost a few games last year due to missed extra points and field goals before signing him. In 11 games, McManus gave the team what was needed. GB needs to pay the man, as the top kickers earn $5-6 million a year and Brandon is in that class. I have no doubt he will get a nice pay day and 3-4 more years with the Packers.

Is he really a "top kicker?" Guys are going 65 yards like it's nothing, I don't think he has that in him. I think he solidifies the position, and gives GB what they need.

At this point what is there to lose. No brainer if he wants to come back to GB, sign him!

Corey, I think you meant to say "underrated" in your sentence since "Kicker might be the most overrated position in football." is the exact opposite of the position you are taking in the article. I remember Ron Wolf bemoaning his mistake in not keeping a good kicker initially.

I don't know if it's either, as teams tend more toward going for 4th downs in plus territory their value and pay rate will decrease accordingly.

McManus impressed me last season. Not just the game winners he hit against the Texans and Jags, but also the 55 yard FG he nailed with 54 seconds left in the week 18 game against the Bears at Lambeau. That's a hell of a kick, a long kick to make on a January afternoon in Wisconsin. Obviously LaFleur managed to muck it all up with his horrible clock management and shitty game plan prior to that kick.

My point is the Packers HAVE their kicker. DO NOT let him out the door, get him signed ASAP. If McManus isn't resigned and playing in Green Bay in September 2025, then Gute totally dropped the ball. This team has enough holes to fill already. They HAVE the answer already. Don't be creating more problems when the solution is right there.

Gute's not letting him out the door, and McManus felt appreciated in GB so he'll sign. It will be substantial but worth it.

I'd say keep him unless the contract is way too much. One of my big complaints in the final years of Crosby was that he couldnt kick the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. Now with this stupid convoluted ( and I hope that they trash it) kick off protocol - that is no longer at a premium. So the value of extra points and field goals has gone up.

Probably the least of the issues Gute, MLF and staff have to look at this off season. McManus did a really dumb thing but he's been a Boy Scout since joining the Packers.

The continued kicking issues(prior to McManus) also brings to question why Rich Bisaccia was given an extension.

“The NFL concluded its investigation into the McManus incident, saying there was insufficient evidence to support a finding that McManus had violated the league's personal conduct policy.” So it shouldn’t even be discussed and he shouldn’t be accused of doing something dumb.

Amen, brother Harry. Why giving Rich B an extension for his horrible STs is absurd. LaFleur is just plain lazy in enforcing the accountability of his coachrs in general. In fact, u might argue that he should be more accountable as well?

Did McManus "do a really dumb thing?" Or was that purely made up.

Our society has become such that once an allegation has been made against a man, he has no defense if it involves a woman. This is the exact opposite of how it should be not only in theory but according to how all our laws are written including our founding documents.

The difference is a BIG deal. There seems to be no credible evidence whatsoever that McManus did anything wrong at all. Not that I factually know, but "innocent until proven guilty" should actually mean something again.

Well, I guess if Brandon understands how important the fabric of this locker room is, what it means to be the next guy, is accountable to everyone, gives credit whenever possible, and is noble in thought, word, and deed forever and ever, amen, we should sign him because we all know what the long road of kicking uncertainty looks like, and if there's a fork in it, man, that ain't pretty.

There were 3 positive ingredients to the 2024 season.

1.) Josh Jacobs run style

2.) Defense could stop the run

3.) Gute finally found an accurate kicker....PAY HIM

Did you forget McKinney as an All- Pro on top of two studs at safety drafted and future/current stud Edgerrin Cooper?

He'll be 34 before the season. His lifetime percentage is 82%. His percentage this year was 10 points higher than any of his 10 previous seasons. I'd bring him back, but I'd love to see them draft one early day 3 if there is quality talent available.

This explains the Packers' kicking woes:
"But after missing six field goals and five extra points his rookie season, even Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was developing an upset stomach."
"after missing five field goals in six games, Gutekunst made another change. "
Having your GM also serve as your kicker is a recipe for disaster.

Everyone was more than ready to boot any kicker that did as poorly as we have witnessed in GB. It's a 3 man operation and several were messed up by the other 2, but I saw none of that with our current kicker and his 2 boys.

What about the long snapper? Wasn't he still off the mark and making our holder be a hero too often?
