Cory's Corner: Christian Watson Is Perfect For Right Now

The fourth-year wideout will bring an added element that has been lacking from the Packers offense.

It’s a perfect time for Christian Watson to come back.

The Packers have desperately needed another receiving threat. Tucker Kraft (19), Romeo Doubs (19), Dontayvion Wicks (16), Josh Jacobs (14) and Matthew Golden (14) are the only Packers with double-digit targets after four games.

Jordan Love has an average depth of target of 8.1 yards. That means that the majority of passes are at or near the line of scrimmage, which ultimately bottles things up for the running game, which is still looking to take off.

Watson is perfect because he can stretch the defense. Even if the connection between Love and Watson isn’t generating deep touchdown passes, at least defenses will have to pay attention to him.

“I know he’ll attack it the right way,” said LaFleur after a Week 18 home loss to Chicago last year where Watson went down with a non-contact injury. “He’ll handle the adversity. It’ll be a bump in the road for him and I think he’ll come back better. That’s just how he is built. It’s how he’s wired. I think there will be good, just down the road.”

Since Watson is now practicing, he can return to games as early as this Sunday against Cincinnati. It is up to the coaching staff to see where he is and if they are comfortable putting him out there.

Even at the end of training camp, Watson was making strong cuts and if you didn’t know that he was coming back from an ACL tear, you’d assume that he was playing in Week 1.

With the passing game not getting down the field as much as it would like, I say you have to play him. Not to mention, the Bengals have a toothless defense that is allowing over 272 passing yards a game coupled with an opposing quarterback completion percentage of 65.

This is the perfect game for Watson to come back and get some confidence after the Packers went winless in Weeks 3 and 4. The Packers not only need to beat the Bengals, but they need to get their offense on track.

Give Jacobs some running lanes and force Cincinnati’s secondary to actually cover Green Bay’s wideouts deep. And when you start throwing deep and getting an early lead, then you can start to mix in the play-action, which should work great for a receiver like Watson that has 10 receptions that were 40-plus yards downfield in his career.

I know there are plenty of Watson detractors, but he has done so much to get to where he is right now. And yes, even if Watson has a touchdown reception in his first game back, many will probably still say, “He won’t make it through the entire season.”

"It's a lot of work honestly," said Watson after practice on Monday. "Everyday, I was just giving the training room some grief last week because I still didn't get any days off last week either. So I really haven't taken a day off since my surgery."

To be honest, I’m not worried about the entire season right now. The Packers need a win, and they need one bad.

Which is why Watson is perfect for right now.

Watson is WR #1.
When he's on the field.
The offenses changes for the better.
Separation, blocking, stretching.
It's important - thats crystal clear.

I agree. Watson is a tremendous football player. His size and speed is amazing and he completes the package with excellent hands and blocking ability.

I am not too concerned about the skill positions. It is the other 5 guys.

I think what Watson brings more than his field stretching, which helps allot, is his down field blocking ability for the other guys catching passes and in the running game. Makes him have a deadly combination of threats.

Hope the best for this young fellow and think it's time for his luck to change. Let's pray he can stay healthy the rest of the season, please.

I hope we don’t forget that the chances are Watson won’t be quite his old self initially even though fit to hit the field or soon to be so. That’s typically the case coming back from that injury.

Yes. Those game legs and body take a while to get up to speed. Less for the smaller playmaking guys more for the linemen and big guys.

Yup. He's got to be able to make all the cuts and adjustments the offense calls for that position to do without any real risk to his knee. They can't just throw him out there to "run long" and try to pull coverage while still minimizing the strain on his knee.

I welcome Watson's return, but the offense and WRs have been fine. The offense is ranked 9th in the league in points per game, 11th in the league in passing yards per game and the WRs have been productive with very few drops this year. The larger offensive issue is the health of the O-line and its ability to open holes for the RBs and protect Love in the passing game. Watson won't fix that. A healthy Tom, Banks and Belton would go a long way to fixing that concern though. Here's hoping all three injured O-linemen rejoin the team as quickly as Watson will.

Watson will help the line a little bit and especially the TEs and RBs because the Ds will have to lighten up the box a little to respect his presence don't you think?

Add on that Watson is really more of a perimeter blocker--he's most useful on runs to the outside or on sweeps--and isn't going to be helping much in the run game between the tackles. Overall, could not agree more, Guam. We'll stated. You saved me a couple paragraphs.

I think he might help the middle just by being out there and making them respect him thus removing a safety from close to or in the box.

Well said Guam! That's exactly been the issue. Friggen Jacobs is getting slammed most carries before he passes the LOS. Last season, Barkley had over 1000 of his yards BEFORE contact. To get that much yardage before contact you KNOW the O-Line was kicking ass and blowing the D-Lines back.

That's what the Packers need to start happening. Banks was supposed to help do that. Belton too. The Packers have added some very "Large" to the O-Line this year to do just that. Blow them D-Linemen the F##K back!

Hell yeah!! GO PACK GO!!

Yes sir! Playoff football and a good SB opportunity will run through the OL success and STs being wonderfully average.

I want to see plays for Watson and Golden. Golden hasn't been thrown to deep, much. Now with a double deep threat, in Watson and Golden, we can open up that part of the field. GO PACK, GO!!!

There is truth that some players won't have the same burst they once had after ACL surgery.
Hobbs just underwent meniscus surgery and he will need more time to regain strength in his surrounding musculature after a period of non-use.
They may be more tentative as well.

The full return recovery rate for pro athletes returning from ACL injuries without significant complications is around 90% eventually replicating prior athletic testing these day per a consensus across numerous academic medical studies

The bigger issue is the lag in recovering full tissue elasticity, which affects burst and explosiveness and this tends to reduce performance in the majority temporarily for a period of typically 3 to 6 months post fitness to return.

My guess is that this fact is a big reason why both sides saw a one year extension as being a good idea, allowing Watson the opportunity to prove himself if such a performance lag does manifest. As fans and team both, we’d be smart to be aware that he may contribute but not be quite the athletic weapon he ordinarily would initially. I don’t see much sign of that awareness here or in other team blogs: quite the opposite in fact.

He gives the safeties something to think about but Watson has to show he can become consistent. Has good game than you don't hear from him again for 3 weeks. Hopefully he can stay healthy and have a break out year.

I’m a big Watson fan and believe he may play vs the Bengals—I hope he does.
I’m with those who have said he helps the running game; the safeties must respect the deep ball.
If Flacco plays, we know he’s a deep ball passer and will be chucking it to Chase and Higgins. There is no reason not to do same with Golden and Watson.
Go Packers!!!
