Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - I'm so Excited...
The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.
By JerseyAl

... and I just can't hide it... (well actually I can, but that doesn't matter). And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I want these:
The Real LaFleur - Batter up, Matt! With LaFleur no longer having to deal with being overruled by a HOF QB, I am DAMN EXCITED (but not without a little trepidation) to see what the LaFleur offense really looks like. Will there be more throws to the middle of the field? Will the running game be more than just a pattern changer? Will pre-snap motion once again be the norm? Will shotgun handoffs on the goal line go the way of the dinosaur? SO many things could (and should) be different this year. Can't wait to see what happens.
Preseason Approach - I'm EXCITED to see the Packers take the first two preseason games more seriously for all the reasons Wendell laid out in his recent article. Most importantly, let the offense led by a new quarterback get some real game reps as a unit.
Rushin' Rashan - So EXCITED for him to get back on the field and continue the march to top-five NFL pass rusher status he was on before his injury.
2nd year WR jumps - There were so many flashes of potential with last year's trio of rookie wide receivers. I'm so looking forward and EXCITED to see if knowing the system better (and not having to figure out secret hand signals) lets them catapult to the level they are seemingly capable of.
Rookie TEs - We all know the deal with rookie tight ends and that it takes time for them to find their way to being productive. I'm EXCITED to see if the Packers' rookie TEs can buck that trend and become a useful part of the offense THIS year.
Quay and Wyatt - A big year-two jump from these two players will have a major effect on this defense. Both are capable of being play disrupters and I'm EXCiTED to see if they can step up and be difference-makers.
The Long Snapper Battle - I'm so EXCITED to watch these two... ok, just kidding.
No drama - I'm most EXCITED of all that the drama cloud has been lifted off the Packers and made its way east to my home state. How fitting that the Jets will be on Hard Knocks, don't you think? I have to be honest, every time I read a quote in my local paper from our former quarterback on how important these offseason OTAs are for building team chemistry, I throw up a little in my mouth.

I’m about to lose control, and… (shoulder shrug) I think I like it.
LOL 😆 🤣😂
Welcome back, man!!!
The Packers actually - smartly - playing preseason to rightfully get up to speed will indeed be welcome.
Gary coming back for Week 1 is something I’ve been against just to best insure ample healing. But I have to admit, if his injuries weren’t severe and limited to the ACL only, if he’s a quick healer, and everything goes right maybe we do see a truly healthy Gary on one side, LVN on the other to start 2023. Rashan Gary is just the kind of player to pull that off. Who was that amazingly quick healer from the Holmgren era?
The Packers WR will be off the chain good in 2023. I firmly believe that. Watson, Doubs & Toure look serious about taking 2nd year jumps, for reals!!! They clearly busted the weight room this offseason! Hopefully that results in fewer injuries, and big 2nd year jumps.
THE VIKINGS ARE IDIOTS. How did they gift us Watson???
I think TE will surprise too. Deguara comes in with a new lease on life. Musgrave already displaying unique gifts that often set the best TEs apart, SMOOTH SPEED, in minicamps. Kraft is no slouch either. Still amazed we got Athlon’s #18 Overall Player from their Top 100 Players at Pick # 78.
Quay & Wyatt? They were drafted as a pair of R1 National Champions for a reason. ILB and DT feed off of each other, and I can’t wait to see these two working off each other’s ques. They know each other’s play so well.
TC just 1 week away.

I don’t throw up in my mouth when I read about Aaron at Jets OTAs, Al. I get really frickin’ pissed off at him for wasting the opportunity to improve his chemistry with the new weapons he was given, and even more glad that his immunized a** is gone.
Many of your “excited” items seem to revolve around the implied assumption that Rodgers was holding the team back through his insistence on doing things his way. It’s my suspicion as well, and I’m excited to find out if it was the case. But I’m also emotionally prepared for the possibility that it wasn’t, and that my team actually would have sucked for several years without that Complicated Fella, and sucks now that he’s gone.
I don’t think it will be the case, but it’s possible. Time will tell.

I LOVE your comment Brad... There will be a few "Thumbs Down" from the few that feel Rodgers could or did no wrong, or those who feel the franchise should put up with ANYTHING, because he's a future HOF QB...
Yeah, Bullshit on that, I'm with you Brad!

Agree with Nick here in saying your first reaction is on the mark, Brad.
Sadly, Aaron Rodgers was playing for Aaron Rodgers. It’s no mistake so many recognize that and are excited to move on, free & clear of all that ridiculous drama.
We have our team back, and I think it’s a very good one.

Excellent comment Brad! Many thumbs up if I could.
Even if the Packers have a bad year this year, I am comfortable in the knowledge that Rodgers' career was nearly over when they traded him and got draft ammunition to speed up the rebuild that had to happen soon anyway.
As to the enormous difference between Rodgers' attitude about OTAs last year and this year, I think it is pretty clear that Rodgers needed a change of scenery as much as the Packers did. The whole QB/team relationship had gone sour in Green Bay. It was time for a change for everyone.

Great take, Guam. If anyone looked to be doing nothing more than going through the motions… but, that’s history now.
The future of this Packers team a week prior to the start of 2023’s TC looks pretty bright.

"I am comfortable in the knowledge that Rodgers' career was nearly over when they traded him"
They started the process of getting out from under that awful contract they gave him and will likely get another 1st in return in 2024. I think they did well for a guy who said he was 90% sure he was going to retire before agreeing to be traded. Clearly this was the only control they still had in the situation.

The thing is, I think he will have a good statistical year for the Jets (if they can keep him upright) and will make that team better than it was a year ago. It's a real possibility that we'll get to about week 10 or 12 and people might be crowing about "letting ARod go too soon"...but I think his best play is behind him and that the Jets will be efficient offensively, but he'll struggle if he's asked to carry that team. The Packers did right in getting what they could when they could. He's not 2011, 2014 or 2016--or even 2020--ARod, anymore, and clinging to the past just makes your team old, undertalented, and expensive.
I'm still predicting the Jets finish second in that division behind the Bills (that's actually a really good division, now), and that they lose in the wild card round. Packers get their 1-pick and it's around #20 overall.
greengold
July 20, 2023 at 08:11 pm
dobs, your detailing work here is sublime!
Yeah, I agree he’ll have a good statistical year if he can stay healthy. NYJ rivals loaded up on pass rush. He’s not getting any younger, and that OL pretty much in their first year together, some in a totally new system.
Ton of talent all over though. Doesn’t change the fact that every week will be their opponent’s Super Bowl, with everybody gunning for Rodgers & the Jets. And, the Jets schedule looks like a murderers row. Bills. Cowboys. Patriots. Chiefs. Broncos (with Sean Peyton). Eagles. Giants. Chargers. Raiders. Bills. Fish. Falcons. Texans. Fish. Commies. Browns. Patriots.
Broncos, Falcons and Texans all got better. Bills added DE AR nemesis Leonard Floyd.
Owning the Jets’ Top 10 pick, plus our own #32 in the 2024 draft works for me.

this whole comment thread is so full of kool-aid ill be suprised that i dont get a free pack of plastic cups in the mail for commenting on it
aaron perfect and can do no wrong???? please.... of course aaron isnt perfect and didnt always play perfect/great. What rodgers did wrong is far, far, FAR outweighed by what he did right and you guys cant see it (let alone accept it) because of your own personal bias towards the guy. I dont know if the Jets are gonna win the Super Bowl, the NFL is so tough. but if they do no one is gonna be shocked or surprised (It will just be weeks of He's a BAD MAN montages). Arod has been pissing people off with his personality his whole career and those people take that as an indicator of his talent and say he cant start/win/come from behind/ win the super bowl and then he proves them wrong.
As for the Packers this year they have talent on the D but crap coaching, potential on the O but I dont think MLF is a good enough coach to make that potential turn into production on the field. Im worried this team will start out alright, then other teams adjust and the packers coaches dont and then the team fades out of the playoff picture...

Yay...Al and Polluted Mindsets is back for the next 48 weeks or so until next years well deserved time off. Welcome back Al! All your points are excellent, but I have a few of my favorites...
The real MLF... Motion should be back, middle of the field throws will definitely be back, especially with two new TEs and Jayden Reed. The middle of the field should be well represented. If I NEVER see another AJ Dillon handoff while in shotgun, that would be okay too.
WR Jumps... If Doubs AND Watson both take off that would be pretty incredible. If Toure plays half as good as he looks this year even better. I'm looking forward to watching all of them, including our new Slot WR Jayden Reed. I'm telling you, I think this kid is special.
Rookie TEs...EVERYBODY is really excited about Musgrave and Kraft including me. Just the thought of having competent TEs running the field. I just LOVE those first 4 picks of the 2023 draft, but Gute did it right grabbing these two.
Quay and Wyatt... I think these two could be the key to the whole dame defense. IF they get the jumps from these two this is a top 5 to 8 defense. I think they plan on using Walker a little but like the Cowboys use Micah Parsons and I think Walker will be more than up to it. Wyatt? Kenny Clark will FINALLY have his running mate.

I also like the competition in this room, and hope they seriously develop depth.
GregC
July 19, 2023 at 07:11 am
I'm excited about all of these things too. I like that you include Samori Toure as one of the second year receivers who could make a jump. There will be opportunities for him. I think he and Jayden Reed will be the third and fourth receivers.
My hope for the TEs is that playing time will result in production. Maybe most rookie TEs don't catch a lot of passes because veterans get most of the playing time. The only veterans in Green Bay are Josiah Deguara, whose role is different, and Tyler Davis, who will probably remain as the #4 TE and special teams player.
T7Steve
July 19, 2023 at 07:57 am
Yes GreeC. The TEs won't have to do much this season to eclipse the output from Those of the last couple seasons. Just being a threat that has to be honored opens up soooo much, especially in the red zone and short yardage situations.
SicSemperTyrannis
July 20, 2023 at 08:36 am
Steve, most downs have the potential to be short yardage situations. 4 yards every down is a recipe for TDs. TE taking a 5 yard pass and turning it into a 15 yard gain should be a staple. Having Musgrave focus on catching passes and Kraft focus on blocking is a good way to get early production out of both of them, and if they can continue learning a thicker playbook MLF can change that up as opponents think they know what's coming.
SO much potential without ever looking at a WR!

I've been wanting that for years here. It's fun meeting up with friends we make in Packer forums. Been doing so since the 1990s, and made some great friends along the way. Al, totally agree. First time in years I am excited about the energy vibe, enthusiasm and eagerness everyone on this team gives off, during interviews. I really think AR sucked up all the questions, microphones and energy from the lockerroom. Everyone just kept to themselves. That's thankfully gone & the WHOLE team is energerized and want to openly support each other. No one wants to let the team down. Everyone feels they can and definitely want to contribute. The whole team is ready. I have said this a few times in comments. MLF will have a tough job keeping everyone involved in the offense. Play distribution is critical keeping everyone contributing & feeling apart of the offense. So excited & enthusiasm is high. Good season. GPG!!!!
SicSemperTyrannis
July 20, 2023 at 08:56 am
Fred, that's a big question I have about this season. Will it be better to try to spread the ball, play the hot hand, or??
MVS played an important role without ever being targeted. Even on nothing but straight go routes, opposing defenses had to try to cover him somehow. Christian Watson has basically identical speed, a greater than 50% catch rate which is an instant improvement, and a thicker playbook starting out too. If "all he does" is draw coverage away from somebody else, that's a very important role!
I'd like to see JL10 not throwing into tight windows, at least not before consistently throwing dimes all over the field to truly open targets.
What does that translate into in terms of distributing the ball? I think lots of typical stats will be very misleading.
Swisch
July 20, 2023 at 08:21 pm
I like the idea of spreading the ball around to keep guys energized and alert, while at the same time going to the hot hand -- which could vary game to game, even half to half.
Depending on who is hot, and matchups, and other factors, a player could see a different level of involvement from game to game; but the key is for all to be ready to contribute when called upon, even if it's just that one play down the stretch in a close contest.
It's a challenge to distribute the ball well, but one worth taking on.
It should be fun to watch.
T7Steve
July 19, 2023 at 08:07 am
Al, the thing I'm most excited about, you didn't mention. Having a consistent and (more) dominant O-line right out of the gate.
I don't know what the percentage of TDs was last year per drive, but it seemed horrible (maybe someone here has that data).
This line is going to open up everything in the playbook and they'll not have to settle for FG attempts. Remember how it was to score a TD on the first possession and play with a lead? How much will that help the D too?
SicSemperTyrannis
July 20, 2023 at 08:59 am
Steve, I HOPE to see a dominant O line! Measurables in our talent there are extreme. Turning that into production in the regular season relies on coaching. My fingers are crossed!

July 20, 2023 at 09:48 am
Hey SicSemperTyrannis. That OL, as dominant as it had been for years, appears to be in possible flux. There was an announcement before OTAs (?) that all positions there were up for competition, if I'm not mistaken. I thought it was a pretty big statement at the time.
Our 2022 pass blocking was quite good. According to Football Outsiders, the Packers OL ranked #3 Overall. Our pass blocking ranking was #6. In sacks allowed, we ranked #7.
However, our Overall Power Ranking in the run game was #18. Power Success Ranking was #17. This is where it appears to be some room for improvement.
(*Funny, but I wonder how adversely our run blocking numbers were affected because we ran the ball out of the shotgun so much, for years???)
Directional OL stats in 411 run blocking snaps:
Left End Ranking #14
Left Tackle Ranking #17
Mid/Guard Ranking #2, with a 45% frequency.
Right Tackle Ranking #3
Right End Ranking #8
We had injury variables that came into play clouding the rankings IMO, with Bak having missed 6 games and Yosh Nijman covering those LT snaps. Elgton Jenkins missed 2 games, and played both G and T.
Then there's the Nijman injury. Sadly, he suffered a shoulder issue and tried playing through it for a number of games towards the end of the season, and it adversely affected his play.
I also think there are discrepancies between some of the outlets assigning performance grades to players. PFF and ESPN appear to have very different takes.
We also lost the "Sacks Allowed" battle in 6 of our 9 losses (MIN, NYG, NYJ, DET, PHI, and DET). Chalk that first one up to AR not being ready to play football in Week 1, sacked 4 times by MIN.
If they are opening up competition, we can assume Bakhtiari and Jenkins are safe. I do think the battle will be on at C between Myers, who is good, and Tom, who Gutekunst made pointed mention of this year that C was his best position. There's the unknown quantity of 2022 R3 pick Sean Rhyan. ??? Rhyan has got to show, right? He seemed like a quality pick at the time after a truly dominant UCLA career winning multiple PAC12 honors.
Jon Runyan is without a contract in 2024, and has zero dead cap if traded. His run blocking according to PFF was questionable, as was Myers', but, looks to me disputable judging by FO numbers provided. Maybe. I like Runyan a lot and have nothing against him. Always thought he had been a good player for us, and I only question the number of players laying in wait for a chance to start at OG, and his highly tradable current contract status. I mean, when you have a lot of bodies at one position, and you can get something for one of them, without projecting a big drop off in play...
I do like Filiaga to compete for an OG position, along with Walker, Jones and Telfort competing at OT for 1 of what I'm guessing with be 9-10 total OL spots on our 53. I really like our depth overall.
The bar is set high, and if GB wants to run the fairly well known quantities of Bak, Jenkins, Myers, Runyan and Nijman or Tom to start the season, we should remain just fine there. If they decide to mix it up, or make a trade or two (Runyan?/Rhyan?/Nijman?) we might still be fine. Looks like there's that much talent on GB's OL.
T7Steve
July 20, 2023 at 01:27 pm
I think we have to keep Ruyan and Nijman. They played well and are barely getting settled in on the right side and a full training camp will bring out their experience over the rest. That, and more work with and a step up from Myers. That's why it's good to have (or the threat of) Tom pushing him at center.
Don't forget that Runyan doesn't get penalties. That's worth a lot to me. Nothing worse than having to look for a flag every time there's a big gain running or passing.

Just like you Al, I am excited and optimistic for this team. I don't know what kind of record the youngsters can muster in year one. We may be a 500 club. I don't care so long as the team is competitive and shows the promise that I think is there. I need to know that there is something to build on rather than tear down.
I hope the best for Rodgers (although our draft pick may suffer). He gave us many exciting and successful years. The paradox of Rodgers is inescapable. His talent and experience were the reason we competed for the top BUT his leaving is necessary so that we can, once again be the top.

How odd it seems that when the team loses a multiple MVP, SB winning, Hall of Fame QB, we are more excited about the upcoming season than we have been in years. And the "real" Matt LaFleur offense should be on full display. What concerns me, though, is whether the team will have an offensive "Plan B" when defenses adjust, and start shutting down the Packers offense. Whether it was AR being stubborn, or a lack of a backup plan, this has been happening for several years. Meanwhile, on defense, will Barry allow his players to play to their strengths, rather than trying to fit square pegs into round holes?
Don't get me wrong- I already have all the exhibition games written down, and will watch them very closely when most of the Packers starters are on the field. And I'm definitely pumped about this season, and seeing what this team can do. I still think the division title is a realistic goal, and winning 10 or 11 games is not an outrageous prediction.

"it's a beautiful mystery," lol.
Yes, there are some paradoxes here for sure. A lot of questions will be answered, but it's 2025: that will answer many of them IMHO. Who develops into stars in this league, what weaknesses need different people, a healthier cap situation ...
A lot of that might still be unknown after this season's over. Players taking big steps forward are the answers we get, hopefully we have lots of that!

So Arod didnt run MLF's scheme (the "real" Matt LaFleur offense) which was a bad thing for our team (shame on you aaron /s) and it will be better for our team to just run his "real" scheme.... but then you are upset that joe barry is running his scheme (the "real" joe barry defense) and doesnt work with his players to play to his players strengths....which style do you want???
There are so many packers fans who hate aaron rodgers the media personality (id say person but none of the packer fans, including myself, know Arod in any real way to form an opinion about the person good or bad) so much that their thinking about Arod the football player is hilariously circular and illogical or downright schizophrenic.

Rather, he seems intent to to create a new culture & continuity on offense by relying on his teammates...all 10 men around him.
I really do appreciate the character this young man displayed since the day he became a Packer. Bart began the same way and never changed.
I have high hopes for Jordan based on how he works.

"Love it that Love doesn't feel the narcissistic need to create news & controversy."
10 has maintained a remarkably low profile this off-season, which shows that he's smart enough to not make a spectacle of himself when media outlets will jump all over every misstep. He's listening to the right people, IMO.

" He's listening to the right people, IMO."
Yep. He seems to be making an "ask" out of himself and trusting some really solid vets to help him lead. Good things happen when asking and listening more than talking.

I'm curious to see....
...how WR spots 3-6 shake out (I don't worry about a 7th WR as that guy is likely a STs specialist). I'm sure that there will be an injury or maybe two that will adjust the depth chart in camp--maybe even a mysterious, late-camp injury to a promising guy they want to stash for 2024. I don't think it's a given that Reed is #3...and I'm very curious to see if the buzz around Malik Heath carries through into camp.
...how the Packers address the C-RG-RT situation. We presume that it will be Myers-Runyan-Nijman/Tom, but I think this is going to be a battle and will probably go a long way toward determining the success of this team. We might be surprised how this all shakes out.
...whether the S position turns out to be at least OK. They've got 3 bodies with starting experience to go with Savage. We might be surprised by who is on top of the depth chart in September, but they can't afford to sink back into the quagmire of the MD Jennings days. If your safeties are bad, it's hard for your defense to be good...and they need this defense to get back into the top third in the league this season.
...if they can figure out how to block on punts and kicks.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how our WR position turns out.
Watson, Doubs and Reed to me are the top 3. Watson looks like he is about to break out as a star. Doubs also is primed for a breakout year. Reed is a unique WR for the Packers and offers ability from the slot right away. He could be that quick twitch type of WR we have been lacking for a while. Should be able to handle motion as well.
The rest of the WR's are all intriguing as well. Toure could be our number 3 as well. He is primed to bust out as well. Wicks is a very intriguing guy. Could be another outside/vertical threat. Heath is very intriguing as an UDFA. Potentially a replacement for Lazard. DuBose will need to show a bunch in training camp since he missed the offseason stuff, but his college tape is intriguting, and Melton has a ton of speed.
Its going to be fun to watch how this position turns out.

The Real LaFleur -
I think as a whole we will see more of of the same type of offense we have seen the last few years. But I do think we will see some subtle changes. I am not expecting a lot of big changes. I think most of the changes will be more based on the personnel they have vs the QB they have. With 2 rookie TE's and a rookie WR, I am expecting to see a lot more action over the middle of the field. They have Reed who I think will be use in motion a lot. Similar to how they used Ervin, a few years ago. But don't be surprised if Watson gets a lot of motion as well.
Preseason Approach -
I don't think we will see a lot of Jordan Love in the preseason, but will definitely see him more then we saw Rodgers the last few years. I'm more excited to see our rookies and 2nd year players. I'm excited to see who is taking a jump and seeing which rookies will help us the most this year.
Rushin' Rashan -
If Gary can come back and at least be a pass rushing specialist to start the year that will improve the front big time! Its crazy to look at the stats of the pass rush win rate from before and after he was hurt. He impacts the whole front.
2nd year WR jumps -
The WR's aren't the only ones I'm excited to see who takes a 2nd year jump. But that being said Watson is looking like he is about to be a star. Doubs before the injury arguably was the teams best WR. And he wasn't the same after. Now that they are our likely starting duo, they will have a major impact on the offense. I really liked what I saw form Toure last year. And from the way it sounds, it sounds like he has gotten stronger. He could be a big time impact WR for us this year. I'm excited to see these 3 guys this camp/preseason.
Rookie TEs -
It typically takes time for rookie TE's to make an impact. That being said, don't be surprised if they perform well in this offense. Both rookies provide a big time abilities and with no true TE ahead of them, they should see a lot of action. Musgrave in the offseason showed his speed and potential as a seam stretching TE. He is a guy that could potentially give us a vertical threat in the middle of the defense that we have lacked. Kraft is more of an inline guy, but he will be more of a receiving threat then Lewis was. A couple of reasons why I think these 2 could have a bigger impact in the receiving game is because most of the attention will be paid to Watson and Aaron Jones.
Quay and Wyatt -
I brought this up in another article, but one reason why I think they let both Lowry and Reed go is because of Wyatt. He didn't get a lot of opportunities last year, but as the year progressed he got better. At the end of the year he was really playing well. I expect to see him playing a lot more.
And Walker, I am expecting a monstrous year from! He will have to prove he has matured, but on the field I think he will be one of the most impactful players on the team.
The Long Snapper Battle -
I don't care who is the LS, just as long as they can get the ball to the punter and holder.
No drama -
This conversation could go a number of ways. Its easy to look at the drama at the surface and throw all the blame at one person. But once you start peeling back the layers, and try to find the roots of the problems, have they been changed? Because, to me that is the most important part. Who created the drama. Some of it is from 12, but at least some of it is from our front office. Which they are still there. We no longer have 12, but the front office is still there. And they were apart of the drama. Which was very similar to what happened 15 years prior.
All i can say is hopefully Love is the guy they want him to be!
I am excited to see what happens this year!

Reasonable post as always RC.
I love Al's columns, but it is such a turn off for me to read all the snarky little comments about a player who is no longer on this team. Aaron Rodgers was great QB for this team for many years. Was he perfect, of course not. None of us are. What he was is a future HOF QB that made being a Packers fan an ultimately enjoyable experience for me, and I'm glad he was a Green Bay Packer.
I took 2 weeks off from CHTV hoping we could move on from the past. Some here, including AL (all due respect) , don't seem to be able to do that. Hopefully that changes as the season moves on. I love this site, but can we please stop living in the past. AR12 is no longer a Green Bay Packer. It's over.

Maine, I can sympathize, but, that history will remain with this team, and the 2023 Packers are still feeling the effects of that one player no longer on the team, and will feel those effects for at least another year. All it takes is one look at all of the VOID years added to maybe 6 or 7 different players contracts into 2026.
I do get what you mean, and try to steer clear as often as possible.
The new era is now beginning as we speak, with a new QB officially signed just yesterday to compete as a backup. McGough. Great! So many unknowns, yet, a very positive vibe is palpable to all of us fans since that trade.
We all have our own takes too. I'm glad AR made being a fan enjoyable for you. I agree, he was a "great QB for this team for many years." I enjoyed the hell out of those times too. BUT, my experience might be different. To me, his last 5 years as a Packer, essentially since GB let Jordy Nelson go, were painful. AR changed in ways I didn't agree with, and made me feel less and less confident in my team as a result. It was an Albatros over my fan head.
As you say, It's over. Good. Yet, fans have to be allowed to share thoughts on the effects that remain. Some subjects discussed make that inevitable, and his tenure is part of the conversation whether we like it or not. (ie: What we could have had had GB traded him just one year earlier. What we had to do to our own cap just to get him out the door. How that is affecting our abilities to improve the team, etc. etc.).
Guam's share from yesterday on this I found most helpful. A parting of ways by both sides that was necessary. Simple as that.
It's not always easy, but we try our best, my friend. Cheers!

Im glad other packer fans are acknowledging the Packers office leadership's role in stirring up drama. People can say what they want about Arod, its their right just like it is my right to agree/disagree with their view as long as everybody is respectful. But the pretty much free pass that Mark Murphy has gotten for his role in all of this is laughable. The shot he took at Arod, using TT's words, (out of context too, for all we know TT was explaining why Arod rubs people the wrong way but is well meaning) was a completely trash thing to do. who the hell goes after somebody like that in real life (let alone in the media) without being a POS person to begin with??? Murphy did that to the teams starting QB, future HOF, SB winner, broke his collarbone for the team, killed the bears on one leg on MNF MVP.... and for what??? what did Murphy hope to help the team with by doing that. If aaron needed a talking to why do it in the media, why use TT's words instead of his own. Murphy wanted to say bad things about Arod without having it look like he was saying them himself. whether it was with Favre or Arod Murphy has been the one consistently making people go "WTF is he thinking doing/saying that right now???" Murphy is a problem for the football side of GBP operations

I read somewhere recently that, as it stands right now....meaning if no veterans are added to this current group...this will be the youngest offense the NFL has seen in FOUR DECADES!! That was shocking to read.
With that in mind, expecting that 2nd year jump from all of last years rookie.....Watson, Doubs, Toure, Walker, Wyatt, et.al., while hoping for instant contributions from all/most of this years rookies...Van Ness, Musgrave, Reed, Kraft, Wooden is a bit unrealistic. I still think this a team that is primed for a breakthrough in 2024, while undergoing growing pains this year.
I hope fans and the media have patience while this group of very young players grow together and adjust to life in the NFL.
RCPackerFan
July 19, 2023 at 10:18 am
There will definitely be a lot of growing pains this year. With Love being his first year starter and basically the entire WR and TE's being 1st and 2nd year players, there will be a lot of learning curves.
That being said they have some very key veterans in key spots. They have the left side of the OL set with Bakhtiari and Jenkins. Myers has improved at OC. Runyan is now a veteran on the OL. We have Jones and Dillon who will provide a ton of veteran leadership for the offense. And the defense has a lot of veterans. While our receiving part of the team is inexperienced, the rest of the team is pretty set.
I don't see any reason why they can't compete with any team in the North this year. And that being said I think next year is the year to make a deep run. But don't write this team off yet.
13TimeChamps
July 19, 2023 at 10:34 am
Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to imply they couldn't compete, particularly in the North. I feel the division is wide open, more so than I can ever recall.
For years, we as GB fans have always had realistic hopes of deep playoff runs year after year for over a quarter century. The point I was trying to make was that might not be realistic this year with all these young players getting to know one another.
As far as winning the North, I absolutely think that's an attainable goal this year.
RCPackerFan
July 19, 2023 at 12:03 pm
Oh I know.
There is a lot of talk about how bad they potentially will be this year but are set up for the 24 year.
I just look at this last year with the year Rodgers had. He had a subpar year by his standards and with the numbers he put up I think Love could put up something similar. And they were 1 game from making the playoffs.
I think the roster is good enough to compete this year to make the play offs and/or win the north.
But I agree with you that a championship run is most likely a year away. The WR's and TE's will be entering year 2 and 3 next year, and our offense could be dynamic by 24.
dobber
July 20, 2023 at 10:09 am
"with all these young players getting to know one another."
They're young, but the only first-year starters are at QB, TE, and maybe WR3. Everyone else has played a season of snaps, and the new starter at QB ran the majority of practice snaps last season.
"As far as winning the North, I absolutely think that's an attainable goal this year."
I think it's a wide-open division. By yardage, the #17, 29, 31 and 32 defenses were in the NFCN last season....by points, 17, 28, 30, and 32. That's a whole lotta bad.
People seem to be jumping on the Detroit bandwagon, and they do play hard, but you have to ask whether they captured lightning in a bottle with Goff. Their OL is good than if it stays healthy, so it's possible they can keep running the ball and protecting Goff. I think they screwed the pooch on their first three picks, this year, though. They've added some CBs...we'll see if it makes a difference...it's still Aidan Hutchinson and not much else.
The Bears will be better. They've added to their OL and they've added weapons on the outside, but they'll be limited by Fields' ability to get the ball out decisively and his bonehead throws. DJ Moore was a great get. The defense will be better...they can't be much worse.
The Vikings are skirting the edge of a rebuild. Their OL is better than it has been, too, but Cousins still holds the ball, takes too many hits and has too many off games. They were 3-3 in games where Jefferson was NOT their leading pass-catcher--hmm, I wonder what DCs will try to do to them this year? I don't think they'll miss Dalvin Cook. They should score points, but the defense is still not good. They only won two games by more than 8-points in 2022--that's ripe for regression.
10 wins....that's what it will take to win the NFCN. I think that's possible for GB.

I keep hearing how excited everyone is but I am just as curious to see the fan base reacts if the year goes south which it very well could. There might not be much drama during camp but if this team even starts 0-2 vs the Bears and Falcons you will start to see it and I am willing to bet this "So Excited" crowd will have a very different feel.
This fan base hasn't had much in the way of losing seasons and they don't stand for it if recent history is any indicator. If they miss the playoffs this year that will be 2 years in a row and if the Jets are contenders the "So Excited" could quickly become the "So Angry" mob.
Excited to watch rookie TEs? Don't hold your breathe here. TEs take a couple of years, not just one to get going. Kelce took a couple of years and I think it was year 4 before Kittle broke out. If these guys are good enough to be contributors as a rookie they wouldn't have lasted that long in the draft. TE is a very hard position to fill and the Packers are one of many franchises looking for a decent one.
Have to give Gary some time before you expect him to return to form, might not happen this year. Lukas was a rotational player in college and will take some time, like Gary did, to become a player at the NFL level. Next year I am excited to see what they can do as a tandem.
WRs very often regress in their 2nd year. Teams will now have film on them and be able to game plan for them. The young player will have to adjust to that and I would expect that to take some time.
I would advise cautious optimism. This so excited crowd are the type of people who like ride the emotional roller coaster and will be howling for heads to be roll when things go south. How the team finishes means more to me than how they start. I would say 7 wins is about right and that is taking into account the easy schedule.

I don't think Packer fans react any differently to losing than fans of other teams. Of course some of them would get angry, but would there be an overwhelming sentiment to fire the coach or GM? Probably not unless things went REALLY bad, and almost any coach would take a lot of heat in that situation.
Also, by my experience, the fans who are the most optimistic tend to be the most forgiving when things go wrong. Optimists remain optimistic and pessimists remain pessimistic.

It has been proven in studies that optimistic people take failure harder because they never expected it to happen.

BB, not one rep in pads yet, that's seeing things as they are. So far our youts are competing against themselves, to achieve their personal best. While we'd like them all to flourish in a professional environment, it wouldn't be unusual for some to wash out. Factor in the risks taken in the draft strategy and we have to expect some misses, and we can only hope those get weeded out during pre-season games at the latest.
That's all part of the excitement! That still leaves a LOT of very talented athletes to compete at every position :)

I'm most excited about the rookies because just about all of them should have a chance to contribute. We really don't have the luxury anymore of a protracted development process at this juncture, which is fine with me. The only looming anxiety I have is watching the new kicker. What's he going to be like in crunch time? There may be a few of these moments in close games.

A development of a player can't really be rushed. I would say the Packers do have that luxury if the fan base doesn't start to howl so loud they force the organization hand. The rookies will struggle, there will be injuries and some players won't pan out at all. 2023 won't be Green Bay's year.

BB, this is what I've been saying. I think 24 doesn't quite get everything right either, but hopefully we're a lot closer. 2025? Being a legitimate contender for a Lombardi then depends on figuring out what and who works this year. I don't see any reason to think that much can't happen.
If that leaves few weak spots, hopefully those can all be strengthened next year, and everybody really gels by 2025. That's my current definition of optimism, and I wouldn't be surprised to see anywhere from 6 - 11 wins this year.

I'm actually pretty worried about this season. I think Mark Murphy has been great for the business side of things (which is hard to judge since its not out there for public consumption) but has been horrible for the football side of operations. I cant blame the Packers for not wanting to fire a coach every time they crap the bed cause coach contracts are guaranteed and u end up paying for coaches that arent with the team, thats not sustainable in GB.
I do think that they low ball the coaches with that corporate mentality of we can pay you less cause our brand is so awesome bullcrap (the trophy is called the Lombardi cause coaches are that important). thats what happened with the ST coach till it bit them in the butt and id bet its why they have guys like jim leonard turn them down and why they hire the barry's and pettine's of the league.
Lafluer is not a bad coach but he is not a great one. Love wasnt developing till clements came back (big THANK YOU! to AROD for that suggestion btw). Gute has actually been ok at finding talent for the roster but then guys have a great year and fade, rookies show potential and dont develop... it screams inadequate coaching and then you realize they are playing moneyball with below market coaches salaries and Murphy is the one making this call.
Basically Murphy is cheap, he has what he paid for and when better coaches adjust and ours dont this young team is gonna first feel lost and then Lafluer is gonna lose the locker room when they realize the coaches arent that good. All cause Murphy doesnt think its worth it to pay for good coaching . The packers dont have to pay out the nose but they cant be cheap and trade on the legacy and success of the past.
