Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Hit Pause and Reset

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Is there ever a year where the bye doesn't seem to come at the perfect time for our Green Bay Packers? My guess cause is the usual up and down nature of a typical Packers season, but that likely applies to the majority of NFL teams in the age of parity. Of course, we all likely let out a collective groan when the schedule was first revealed and the Packers drew the earliest possible bye, But after the last two games, where special teams were anything but and the defense went back to it's old poor tackling ways, I'm sure the coaches appreciate the extra week to take a breath, self scout, and identify what they do well and what should be avoided.

And let's not forget the Packers' walking wounded who will benefit greatly from an extra week of rest. Aaron Banks and Zach Tom are both back practicing. If there's anything the Packers offense could really use, it would be a return to normalcy on their offensive line. I'm hoping they can get back to the five they started the season with and if Sean Rhyan struggles, bring Morgan into that spot.

The Packers are 3-3 the week after the bye under Matt LaFleur, but the wins have been close and the losses have not. The net result is a -31 point differential over those six games.

The Jeff Hafley coaching tree is off to a strong start. After only one year with the Packers as their linebackers coach and run game coordinator, Anthony Campanile is transforming what was previously a woeful Jaguars defense. After five games, they lead the league with 10 interceptions, are 6th in forced fumbles with 5, 8th in points allowed (The Packers are 10th) and 11th in rushing yards allowed (the Packers are 2nd), Campanile has that old school, fiery coach demeanor that pairs well with coaching defense. The Packers defense has been really good (minus the Dallas game), but I wish my New Jersey paisano would have stuck around for one more year with Hafley and the Packers.

I don't care how good Chrisitian Watson looks (and he looks great!), there's no way the Packers should or will activate him for this week.

I'm calling this a revenge game with Joe Flacco now a Bengal (even though Flacco was not the reason the Browns won that game, the Packers simply lost it themselves).

For Matthew Golden, it really is time they start giving him more targets downfield. Stop with the jet sweeps, let Savion Williams be that guy. Golden doesn't seem to have a natural feel for when or where to cut on those possessions. That doesn't mean he can't develop it eventually, but using Golden to do what Jayden Reed was doing is not taking advantage of what Golden does best, which is get open and catch the football.

Just win the game while staying and getting healthier. This O-line needs to play together and get in sync with each other. Until that happens, it won't matter how the rest of the O plays, will lead to hanging the D out to dry and making special team plays more impactful.

If all are healthy, make a choice between Morgan and Rhyan at RG and stick with it. No more of this idiotic intentional alternating. Let the line play together and settle unless forced to do otherwise.

You hit most all of the critical needs for improvement.
Biggest miss on your list is mlf getting his act together.
Clock, personnel, adjustments in game and challenges.
If he fails to prioritize ST's, we'll see it this week based on the people on the lines.

Yes, get healthy but also get on the same page. I would say that starts with the coaching. If we play error filled ball you seriously have to question the skill of the coaches and their methods. The chronic special teams play is a total head scratcher. Lafleur and company need to step up their game- period!

I never had a problem with an early bye. The Packers always have a slew of injuries at the beginning of the season, and there are always kinks that need to be worked out with at least one of the units. (This time, it's mostly special teams.)

Struggles- Rhyan did better last year.
( Pff ratings don't lie.)
And Jenkins is not the answer at Center.
Poor play gets people hurt.
Whether it's the guy next to you, or the backfield.

Never keep money on the bench.
Watson should sub others.

Agree on Golden.

But I'm sure Gute could get a better FA.
Also Rhyan deserves a shot.
Why Rhyan? Keeps him from going off - Sides.
And Morgan can fill-in.

Drew Kendall. Philly took in the 5th. Pete Kendall's kid. Over 31 straight starts for BC. Hafley knew about him, but apparently Gutenkunst wanted a guy to fill a spot on IR. By the way, Devin Lloyd has Four of the Jags 10 INTs.
He was the guy from Rd One to run the card up to Goddell, not Quay. Maybe move Quay for a center by the deadline. You cannot put big money on average results. Tyson Campbell s the shut down CB for the Jags, he went with Stokes.

Gute has a problem if he moves Jenkins.
Promises made, promises broken, with Bond.
But it was insanity to move Jenkins to C.

Quay should not be moved.
You have a new LB coach.
Cooper had a bad game in Dallas.
Back-ups didn't help.

Campbell was the better CB.
He went for the 40 time.

I thought what Pat Murphy did with Trevor McGill Monday was brilliant. Getting him back on the mound to face 2 batters in the 8th inning with 1 out already recorded was a superb managerial decision. GET WATSON BACK OUT THERE NOW! Let him run a few wind sprints; maybe even throw him an easy sideline pass. Love has to get the feel for how "all" his receivers are moving...especially Watson with his speed. Coming back, Christian might be a tad slower...might move a little differently. Both Christian and Jordan need to regain the feel, the movement and especially the off the line juke(s) to get open. Love needs to see Watson in action.

To me that depends on his fitness and that of others. Is he better than the player we would replace currently and in that role? If that’s Heath as most expect, is he ready to block hard straight away, and so on?

Passing a physical isn’t the same as being game fit. We outsiders don’t know how physically up to speed he is, but it usually takes a week or two in full training/gym work even if a player was ready before the rules allowed activation. Playing before fully up to speed brings an increased risk of avoidable injuries.

Was Trevor McGill game fit Monday. Threw how many pitches? Recorded 2 outs! Murphy was brilliant getting him in a play-off game, back on the mound. Time for Christian Watson to run 1/2 dozen straight line wind sprints...and maybe throw him a sideline pass. Don't call a JJ run play to his side asking him to block. In getting him out there, the coaches have to be smart with the play call...obviously.

"Was Trevor McGill game fit Monday."

Trevor McGill isn't running 20-30 yards downfield, juking out defenders, blocking NFL DBs and LBs, fighting defenders to get off the line. McGill is standing on a mound with zero contact pitching to 2 batters. Sorry, but that's kind of a silly analogy tbh.

How about we let the professionals...coaches, medical staff, and the player himself...determine when he should resume playing?

Amazing drive and work ethic from that young man. No way I play him vs the Bengals. I am just excited he is preparing to return. He's ahead of the "consensus" schedule of late November. That is a testament to his "want to" motivation. It is very admirable.

He will be on the field soon but let him rev up on the practice field for a few more weeks before unleashing him on defenses.

Watson stated he’s been running the same routes as he did in practice for the past two months. So, what does more practice time do for him. It’s not like it’s mimicking game speed or coverage all that much. If he’s medically cleared to go, let him get out there for some plays. Is there any better way to getting revved up then to start working into real games? I doubt it…Can’t wait to see what a difference he will make in this offense with Golden.

Impact not routes. Playing is not the same as running patterns in shorts or shells. Then there’s timing with others, notably Love but also other receivers when blocking or being blocked for.

In season practice is about mostly getting ready for the next opponent and doesn’t include much physical intensity or tackling. So, his gain in those practices is minimal and some of them don’t even include pads. He’s a vet, and has worked with Love and others a lot.

Getting our players back, especially on the OL is the most critical need for the Packers at this point. Next is stop beating themselves with penalties and poor execution. Packer coaches need to work the mitigating the penalties and improving the execution. On defense it would be great if the Packers defense could generate more turnovers. That has been the only element missing from solid defensive play (except in Dallas) so far this season. No expectations for the STs.

Tom and Banks returning to the line up is essential. Need to get the best 5 practicing and playing in games together for the first time this season.

Even when they return, just who on the OL is having a productive year? Not Walker (the swat strip fumble of Love in Dallas was due to Walker losing his man around his left) who is rapidly eroding his 2026 FA payday. Morgan has been designated as a "versatile" back up at all OL positions except C. I believe his traveling itinerary is a huge disservice to his development. Banks is brittle and not available...HUGE disappointment to date. Jenks is in the worst funk of his career. Ryan has surprisingly regressed...badly. Kinnard may be an OK backup G but a liability at RT. And the penalties!

This reminds me of the DL under Rebrovich where the entire room was underperforming last year. If Butkus is truly running the OL operation he needs help...or a replacement.

Agree LambeauPlain. I would have preferred for the Packers OL starting 5 from left to right to be Morgan, Jenkins, Tom, Rhyan and Walker. That was based on Tom having the potential to be an HOF Center and LG being the best position for Jenkins and Morgan having only previously played LT. But with the Banks signing and the injuries so far this season I think the Packers have made a mess of their OL.

We'll see how they come out of the bye week but I don't believe that they have their OLs playing in the positions where they would be most effective, injuries or not. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

lol. Here’s the tweet:

“Sean Rhyan has a stamina problem, I think. He always plays better when rotating with Jordan Morgan. And the staff has already mentioned some things in that regard.”

Since he’s a fan writer based in Brazil, those staff whispers are either incredibly loud or not first hand. I’m listening but not hearing them from elsewhere. He’s just expressing an opinion: “I think.”

Rhyan has been playing next to the most problematic position as well in Toms absence. Kinnard, Morgan and Belton have split snaps and all struggled and all differently. That could have something to do with it.

Actually he’s probably referencing comments Rhyan in his first couple of years, which is not new, though he couches it as if it were. It was not an issue last year. Actually, Rhyan’s best play has been when he’s been allowed to play uninterrupted with a stable line (latter half of last year). So I disagree with the contention anyway I suppose.

I’d take this with not just a grain, but a bushel of salt at this point and certainly not start repeating it as if it were a widespread whisper as opposed to one long distance fan writer’s opinion, lest it devalue your others.

Personally, I’ve heard nothing on those lines. What I have seen is problems along the entire line especially with coordination and that makes everyone worse.

If Ryan isn’t fit, and that was an issue early in his time here that was not so by last year, then replace him with Morgan or Kinnard (who is more G than T). Simple. Tom and Banks getting healthy would make that an easy decision since it would render Morgan and Kinnard as options otherwise on the bench.

Let’s hope Tom and Banks are indeed close to fully healthy, finally, not simply limping back early to help. If we’d not lost and tied against the last two bad opponents I’d be saying give them another week if there is any doubt. At this point though, LaFleur has surrendered that luxury and I hope we don’t end up paying a hidden price for that.

If the NFL is hell bent on having very early and very late bye's the entire division should have those bye's within a week of each other. GB, Chicago, and Minny are all week 4 and week 5 byes, while the Lions get theirs almost right in the middle of the season (week 8). I know life is not fair, but with the league's constant spouting about parity, just level the playing field as far as scheduling. Can't be that difficult.

"If there's anything the Packers offense could really use, it would be a return to normalcy on their offensive line."

Normal this season has been is cobbling together whatever pieces are still available and seeing if ti sticks. We keep coming back to the phrase "best 5"...you'd like to think that by week 6 we'd be seeing that coalesce. At this stage, we're still operating on supposition.

"The Packers are 3-3 the week after the bye under Matt LaFleur, but the wins have been close and the losses have not."

That's a sobering number. I really don't care about the aesthetic of a win, just that they can get games into the win column. They should be favored to win their next 4...6-1-1 when Philly comes to Lambeau would look pretty good. There's this fixation with style points that I just don't understand.

"I don't care how good Chrisitian Watson looks (and he looks great!), there's no way the Packers should or will activate him for this week."

If he's cleared to practice in full, he's likely healthy enough to play. Watson would clearly be on a pitch count when he plays his first couple games back. He's likely going to be supplanting a healthy player in the rotation who plays limited snaps anyway and as an active who is limited more by health and less by talent...maybe there will be some roster shift that makes this easy, but at some point, you've got to start breaking him back in.

"I'm calling this a revenge game with Joe Flacco now a Bengal (even though Flacco was not the reason the Browns won that game, the Packers simply lost it themselves)."

Do we really think Flacco is going to move the needle much with Cincinnati? And how much can he give them on three days' practice time? He was bad in Cleveland with some run game, weak pass pro, and OK receiving targets. He's going to Cinci with no run game, possibly poorer pass pro, but outstanding receiving talent. I won't be surprised if--assuming the pass rush is meh--he puts up some points, but this Cinci team has no defense. The Packers should put up 35 on these guys, and I don't see them keeping up.

That's really what's in question.

The WR room is mostly healthy (save for Reed) and has been playing mostly well. They don't have to have him right now. They've got a couple weeks to activate him. But if they feel like he gives them more right now than someone else in the rotation, why not?...unless the question is the accompanying roster move to activate him.

I think until he's on the field and performing, we're going to be asking "is he ready?"

Couldn't agree more about Golden. You drafted the guy in the first round, he might have the best hands on the team, so give him more chances with a vacancy on the receiving unit. He certainly doesn't have a feel for punt returns, so I don't know why MLF insists on putting him back there--other than a convenient place to get him on the field in the special teams training ground. The whole approach the Packers are taking with Golden doesn't really make a lot of sense.

If they continue using him as a pin-ball in the Shanahan Demo Derby offense, he may never blossom. Get him in space and let him do his thing. He has great hands and control, lightening quick cut backs etc. The LaFleur high school plays seem predictable and opposing defenses diagnose and react accordingly.

Until there is accountability from the top down from El Policy to the coordinators, to the coaches to the players, I see most of these conversations, though they are fun, to be little more than tinkering around the edges.

-Accountability to me means, players are benched if they make the same mistakes, are out shape, don't tackle, run wrong routes consistently
-Coordinator accountability means having your team ready, instilling discipline, not weakening the rest of the team with your weaknesses
-Coaching accountability-same as above

Head Coach Accountability:
-Carefully managing and understanding all 3 branches of the team and holding everyone accountable
-Hiring capable OC/DC/ST coaches. If they fail more than 1 year-reassess immediately and be able to
fire if warranted.

I would say a team like the Lions is better aligned with top-down accountability and it shows. They move as one unit.
Dan Campbell comes from a strong military background, father was in the Marines, grandfathers served. He has an understanding of what it takes to go into figurative battle in a way that MLF does not.

Looking at the WR graphic displayed at the end of Al's article...Golden easily stands out. 2nd in league among all receivers in 'separation grade' - which is truly remarkable!

I'm not sure why PFF lumps catchpoint and YAC together as one grade as they are different items, nonetheless, Golden is 'average' here. My eyes tell me that his 'catchpoint' score must be high (he has great hands and adjusts to the ball well)....so his YAC must be dragging his score down to make it average...I dunno...just trying to figure out Golden's pedestrian catchpoint/YAC. Doubs and Kraft both score higher than him on this.

Back to PFF's separation grade key Idea - it measures the quality of the separation created by the player's skill, not just the raw distance.

Separation Percentage: This metric measures how often a receiver beats the coverage to get open. It looks at all routes run (not just targeted ones), and differentiates true separation from moments where a receiver is open because the defense is focused on stopping yards after the catch or a first down.

But...my 'wow' moment is Golden's separation grade. If he's getting so open, why isn't he getting more targets or plays designed to go his way?

I think your hunch is on the money. Golden's running ability with the ball in his hands is not his best attribute, so it would show up as both meh YAC and jet sweep production.

How many passes has he caught in stride? Going to the turf? It seems like a lot of the latter. Hard to get YAC when you're sliding on the ground.

IMO at this point the Packers are struggling to get runners to the perimeter. Williams and Golden have the wheels. Giving Golden the ball on sweep action makes his going in motion a guessing game for the defense.

The schedule pause has permitted me to assuage my mild disappointment with the Packers season (thus far) - by enjoying the starts of the NHL and NBA seasons. Also the ALDS playoffs with my Blue Jays taking it to the Yankees.

As an aside - my wish is for a Blue Jays v. Brewers Championship Series. 2 teams of similar style and character - which would cause the MLB brass to spit out their lobster salad due entirely to being the antithesis of a Dodgers-Yankees final.

As for the Packers - I just get the feeling that something is not quite right with the team. Like a glitch in the matrix. Still there is time for effective troubleshooting and optimal performance. In the meantime - I'm noting potential HCs after this year.
