Confessions of a Polluted Mindset: A Packers Brain Drain
Random thoughts swimming around in the Packers' section of my brain.
By JerseyAl

State of the Packers: The Packers did what they needed to do - beat an inferior opponent at home. Have they turned the corner? Seattle will provide the answers this Thursday Night. WIn there and the answer is yes (and they would be doing it without a cute catchphrase for once (Come to Jesus, Shhhh, R-E-L-A-X, Run the Table, etc.). Personally, I'm not yet convinced, but the schedule does get easier in December.
Aaron Jones: What else is there to say other than giving him the ball more could have really helped in those four losses the Packers have.
MVS: The receiver I had the Packers taking in my mock draft (RD6) for the CheeseheadTV Pro Football Draft Guide has already exceeded expectations. Sure the size and speed numbers were enticing, but could this raw project learn to run good routes and be a secure pass-catcher? He's answering yes to both questions and much sooner than anyone could have expected. Rodgers actually seems to fully trust a rookie receiver. Has that ever happened?
Packers Defense: Green Bay actually leads the league in sacks with 31. Let those words sink in. All without a dynamic edge rusher. Fifteen different Packers have recorded at least one sack. Fackrell and Clark lead the way with five apiece. We were told that Pettine has done this before, but did anyone honestly expect this kind of success with this group of players? He obviously quickly figured out what Fackrell does well (edge rush and drop in coverage) and what he can't do (set an edge and tackle running backs). He uses him properly and look what happens - the butt of many jokes is now a solid contributor.
Packers Offense: Mike McCarthy, a new conversion to the "Balance Party" wins the election in a landslide. This version of McCarthy gets to stay in power.
Safeties: When Kentrell Brice got hurt (and with Ha Ha and Whitehead gone), the Packers played without any of the three safeties that had 90% of the snaps at those positions just a few weeks ago. And it didn't seem to matter. I couldn't possibly imagine that being the case last year.
Special teams: yuck...
Rodgers: Played marginally better as a passer, but I thought he looked much improved as far as mobility goes. He looked more comfortable moving around in the pocket and had more spring in his step when he chose to run.
Matthews: Seems like everyone is killing Matthews (and now you'll probably kill me for this opinion), but I don't think it's that deserved. He's obviously not what he once was - can't turn the corner anymore and doesn't have impressive stats, but he gives his all and is still disruptive on the field, drawing attention and creating opportunities for his teammates.

They have to go 1-1 the next two, and preferably 2-0. If they stop shooting themselves in the foot and doing dumb stuff (and that includes special teams), then they can do it. Do that and I'll believe. Not until then.
ARod needs to play better, Ron Zook needs to be fired immediately, and MM still needs to go at the end of the year.

Pettine was advertised as a guy who uses players according to their strengths, and 51 is a great example of that.
(Does MM do that? Ugh.)

Pettine seams to use 52 wisely as well. Which I am fine with them continuing, just for no more than 5 million per year.
I'm not sure anyone including Pettine knows what to do with 53. Or, that there is any price you'd want to do it at.

Like in Washington.
Like in Detroit.
Like in L.A.
Like in Foxboro.
Like everywhere except in Lambeau.
Last decent QB we beat away from Lambeau was...... ?

Looking back the Packers would have been better off keeping Brett Hundley and alternating him this season. Rodgers starts all home games and Hundley starts all away games. They'd be undefeated except for that tie.

Here is a question for people to think about. If Seattle shuts down the running game and knocks 12 around and lose is MM gone at the end of the year?
Minnesota in two weeks playing better this is the two game stretch that they need a 2-0 record. I think all the games are important but if they lose Thursday the only chance for the playoffs is winning the division.
dobber
November 14, 2018 at 09:28 am
Even if they lose Thursday, they can still finish 10-5-1 which could win the division since it would require that they beat Chicaco, Minnesota, and Detroit, giving them tiebreakers on CHI/MIN...and Detroit won't matter. Minnesota and Chicago have to play each other twice, yet.

November 14, 2018 at 10:40 am
They are 4-4-1 right now if they lose 4-5-1. So they have to go 6-0 the rest of the way. That is a Tall order considering some of the defenses we have to face. Can it be done yes but you think they go 6-1 or 7-0. This team has been inconsistent and has had boneheaded plays in key moments of previous games. I think their best chance is winning the division. If Seattle or Atlanta beat us head to they will be ahead of us in the wild card. That loss to the loins was huge and that tie doesn’t help either and now they have to play post season football the rest of the season. Plus take into account that other teams have to falter for a playoff chance. IT IS MUST WIN THE REST OF THE SEASON!!!!!!

If our best player starts playing - we will win. Just like the Rams and KC, the Packers will outscore any of these remaining teams - if Rodgers brings his A game. Between, our RBs, TEs and the WR, we have enough horsepower to put teams in catchup mode - and - that is good for this improving defense.
Make it so.

There's a Podcast called "Locked on Packers" which I've mentioned here before. The host of the show brought up the one point I was asking myself last Sunday and I'm concerned McCarthy will do it again in Seattle.
With about 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter McCarthy jogs out Williams instead of Jones. One 2nd and one he runs Williams for minus 2 yards and on 3rd down Rodgers throws incomplete or away (not sure) because his WR are all 25 yards down field.
Two things JUMP to mind in that series.
(1) WHY run Williams there when Jones is running the way he was. I understand putting Williams in for a DOWN or two, but not a SERIES. Especially at that point in the game. STAY with the hot hand.
(2) WHY are the WR's all 20 or 25 yards downfield on 3rd and 3? This IS and this HAS been the biggest FLAW in McCarthy's offense. The plays develop slowly and the chance for success isn't what you'd want on 3rd and 3 yet MM does this much of the time.
Final thought...WHY does Ron Zook still have a job? OMG have you ever saw a worse ST bunch than what GB shows every week? Have Philbin coach ST since he clearly hasn't influenced the offense any this year. Anyone but Zook...SMH

Nick, I've been complaining about #1 all year - where have ya been? I didn't mention it this time because I'm tired of talking about the ridiculousness of RB's rotating entire series. It's one thing if your top guy is tired in the 2nd half and need a break, but after two incredible series from Jones, it's now Williams' turn? Absurd! I would also understand if Williams came in for specific plays more suited to his skillset, but overall, that's not the case.
RCPackerFan
November 14, 2018 at 08:04 am
I have also been complaining about it. More loudly now that they have a 2 RB rotation.
Myself this is McCarthy's biggest flaw. Not being able to figure out a rotation for the RB's.
jeremyjjbrown
November 14, 2018 at 09:03 am
I'm less worried about the rotation than the total abandonment of the running game. We saw McCarthy stay commited to the run with a lead against an inferior opponent. That doesn't mean it's going to stay that way against good team when they are behind a score.
RCPackerFan
November 14, 2018 at 09:27 am
The part I don't like is when they don't have Jones in for an entire series. He has become so explosive and such a threat at RB that they simply can't take him out for series at a time.
My thought is if there is a 10 play drive, Jones plays 6-8 of those snaps and have Williams play the other 2-4.
Williams can be an effective RB. He has good hands, and he runs with real power.
After the long run you could see that Jones was gassed. IMO, a play like that take him out and let Williams come in. If they don't score maybe 1-2 plays later he could come in again.
jeremyjjbrown
November 14, 2018 at 10:49 am
I agree with you. But it doesn't matter who's in there if McCarthy isn't going to run at all.
Check that, if MM isn't going to run at all it's better to have Williams in. He's a better blocker and Jones can't get injured on the sideline. The new coach in 2019 is going to need Jones.

The answer lies in the fact that Williams isn't anywhere near the runner that Aaron Jones is. No point bringing Williams into the game and teams settle into pass defense - so - McCarthy expects Williams to run as effectively as Jones. Looks like we only have one effective RB on the team. Good position to be in (NOT). Ty Montgomery was actually a fairly good RB and would have been a better compliment to Jones. Unfortunately McCarthy mishandled that resource by having 3 guys doing nothing.
Tundraboy
November 14, 2018 at 10:02 am
No question one of the single biggest flaws McCarthy brings each week. Also the number one reason he kills momentum more often than not. Al said it best, it's absurd and it's also the reason I want to move on from McCarthy. It's exhausting to see how he manages the game.

I think #2 is most annoying. Its like the playcaller just doesn't know/doesn't care that the long pass has a low probability of converting. Just a 'maybe next time' mentality.
TKWorldWide
November 14, 2018 at 06:31 pm
I wouldn’t even complain if the pass plays had layers: one or two deep, some middle, some short. But I keep hearing about ALL the receivers are deep and slow developing routes in those situations. Frustrating!
croatpackfan
November 15, 2018 at 02:46 am
Nick I can imagine one scenario which may be the reason. First, maybe Aaron Jones asked for breather, and they put Jamaal and than Packers went to no huddle, trying to catch opponent on the heal.
Regarding second issue (WR 20-25 down the field) I believe it is not the play called by sideline. I believe Aaron change that play at the line of scrimmage , because he wanted to catch Miami unprepared for deep ball, when all will expect at least one WR or TE to run closer cross route.
But, I might be wrong!

Pretty balanced analysis Al. I don't know what the other commenters think about this, but overall, I think this Packer's team is a hard team to get a read on. Not sure why. Maybe the 'new' NFL has finally caught up with the front office. Think like most here, this game will decide what direction the team goes the rest of the year. What direction that is, not clue, not a clue...

Al,
I was thinking the same thing regarding the D. Who would have thought that the D would be leading in sacks at this point in the season? Maybe MP was the only one. I haven’t read any Petunia cracks in quite a while. Instead I’m reading MP for HC.
Each time I watch, I wonder who is going to have a free run to the QB? Adams, Greene, Lancaster!? Let’s see if they can keep up the pressure in Seattle.
JonathanSpader
November 14, 2018 at 11:01 am
Pettine has been a HC and wasn't a good one because it was the Browns I take it with a big grain of salt. Why pull him away from the success he's had at DC? The only reason I can think of is if he would leave the Packers for a HC job after what he's done in 2018. What the Packers need is better offensive playcalling. Bring in an offense minded HC and/or release Philbin and bring in a new OC and let him call the plays. The offense just doesn't click the way we're used to so something has to change. We keep seeing flashes which just makes it that much more frustrating. You can see that the talent is there it just isn't being utilized.

November 14, 2018 at 11:05 am
Pettine has gone on record as saying he has no desire to be a HC again. That might just be diplomacy, or he might actually be serious.

Aaron Jones & MVS - The stars of the Packers present and future! The offense will be ran through these guys soon. MVS has the speed to put fear in defenses. But with Adams on the other side who do they double? And if they decide to play safety's deep to stop Adams and MVS, Jones will gain 5+ yards almost every time, as he does now.
Packers Defense - I believed in Pettine that he would scheme up a better pass rush. I'd be lying if I said I thought they would lead the league halfway through, but I knew they would be better. The problem is for the last however many years us fans have gotten used to Capers scheme where the pass rush absolutely comes from the OLB's. With Pettine, that's now what he does.
Packers Offense - McCarthy's best decision was keeping Jones on the field for most of the snaps. He actually has done this every game since the bye week. Shows that self scouting helped.
My only complaint right now of McCarthy is rotating RB's per series. Instead of having Jones come off during the series for a few plays and a break, they take him out for entire series. I don't like that.
Safety's - Just saying, what if we improved over Clinton-Dix and Brice and Whitehead? Both Clinton-Dix and Brice missed a lot of tackles. Whitehead was ok in the role he played, but wasn't special. Perhaps the Packers are better with Williams, Jones, Greene at safety?
Rodgers - In my eyes he looked better. He had some throws that were off. I do think some of that is due to lack of practice time. His timing is off with the speed of the rookies. Give him a few more weeks and I think we will see his timing catch up. He also didn't throw to some open receivers again. That part I don't know what will fix that.
But something about his throws looked better to me. Like they were coming out with better zip.
I'm not sure what the cause of it is, but hopefully he keeps improving and getting back to his old self.
Mathews - When people talk about him its all about his sacks. Nothing else. Mathews is currently at 2.5 sacks. Should be 3.5 due to one of his perfect form tackles on a QB got penalized. Also there has been a couple of times that he could have sacked the QB but someone else was there just before him. Like Sunday, Clark got there a 1/2 second before Mathews.
I know I'm in the minority, but I hope he comes back. Obviously at a reduced rate.

Snap counts are here...
https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2018/11/12/18087608/packers-week-11-s...
Jones outsnapped Williams 3:1 and out-touched him 18-3. Neither of those really bother me given Williams being a competent receiver and better blocker (imagine what the snaps would look like if the Packers trailed, though).
Still, 57 offensive snaps, a total of 18 run calls (Jones + Williams), that's still 31% run calls on a day that they mostly controlled from the Miami fumble on. Noting that ARod had a couple scrambles, but not called run plays. THAT's still a problem.
RCPackerFan
November 14, 2018 at 09:47 am
What I'm trying to say isn't anything about snap counts. His snap count is perfect IMO. The ration of Jones to Williams being 3:1 is about perfect in all honesty.
I just hate that they take Jones off for an entire series.
They don't take Adams or MVS out for entire series. So why do they do with with Jones?
JerseyAl
November 14, 2018 at 09:58 am
What stands out to me on that snap count list is the absence of Oren Burks. As far as I know, he wasn't injured and wasn't inactive, so he got 0 defensive snaps?

Excellent point. This is what's been so frustrating about MM on the offensive side -- misusage of players. The bad drafting + misusage of offensive players like Aaron Jones only compounds our problems.
Will McCarthy change? History says no. Only coaches who last a long time evolve (i.e. Bill Belichick). I just don't see that with McCarthy anymore. We have to wait until week 10 for him to realize Aaron Jones is a star in the making. Sheesh...

I have no problem with Williams getting some playing because lets not forget Jones is not a durable type of back . When Jones was in on short yardage situations there were complaints now the reverse. I agree Matthews is still playing hard and is in on many plays, not a concern. The two miscommunication plays to Adams does bother me. Fire Zook ,seems very drastic. Yes, there were some poor plays ,but blocked punt seemed to be poor blocking execution. However, coverage on one of the best returners and our punter and kicker are playing well. Before the season, MM declared the Packer run game would be by "committee".
MMs ego is huge and teamed with his tremendous stubborn streak, he is slow to accept mistakes and exacerbates his errors.
How many more games might the Pack had won if AJ ran the ball 15-25 times over the last 7 games?
How many more games might the Pack had won if one of the best ST coaches was hired 3 years ago?
How many more SBs might the Packer have played in if one of the best Defensive Coordinators in the NFL was hired 6 years ago?
I think this is why BG kept him on a one year deal. He needs to see MMs flaws too. And be very perplexed that with a future HOF QB, over the last 49 games MM is 44-44-1

focusing more on the team effort.
4. Don't see him slacking off on plays.
5. I see him out there giving it all.
6. I used to call him glamour boy. But now

Bottomline: He may not have the physical skills he used to, but mentally he has matured and is giving whatever he has left in the tank.

MM needs to go after this season if he doesn't get this offense scoring in the thirties every game. they are too good to be floundering offensively for long stretches. i thought with Philbin back this offense would take off. i realize Rodgers wasn't 100 percent but MM did nothing to call plays to get the ball out quickly. finally on Sunday....we saw the effective use of the screen pass which has been missing for many moons. keep getting Jones the ball in space and good things will happen.

I totally agree. Beating Miami was good , but we should have scored 40-50 easy.
The Saints have no problem doing it and they are SuperBowl Bound.

Then why do we even care what the Packers do from here on out?

We need more 3 TE sets.
I honestly don't think their is a team out that would know how to stop our 3 TEs
if we lined them up more as all receiving threats.
This IMMEDIATELY takes PRESSURE OFF A. Rogers where he can throw the quick passes. Why, why why does McCarthy have just a few plays? And, then he holds on to them on his little colored cards!
Come on MM! I want more 3 TE sets.
Why did you even bother getting these 3 TEs when we don't even use them properly!
1. J. Graham
2. M. Lewis
3. L.Kendricks

Who are you going to take off the field for a 3 TE set? Adams? MVS? They ran a significant number of 2 TE sets on Sunday and they worked well.

The opponents might become so cross, that they make a mistake.
As long as we don’t have to stand another frontal assault; that rabbit’s dynamite!

Simpler solution is just use the first two. Lewis should always be in there with Jones.

The Seahawks are 1-2 at home this season. Their only home victory coming against the Cowboys.
The Seahawks other 3 victories have come against the Cardinals, Lions and Raiders. Not exactly a "Murderer's Row" of NFL teams.
Maybe the Packers can maintain their momentum against the Seachickens. Their home stadium doesn't appear to provide the advantage they once enjoyed there. If the Packers don't beat themselves and play as well as they did against the Rams, Pats and Dolphins we can take them and earn our first road victory this season. Thanks, Since '61

Simply put...the Packers have no right to brag and point fingers.

Your right, but it's time for them to show some pride in Seattle.

There is no version of MM that I want back next season. There will be a new decision that will need to be made, and no reason to think MM won't choose the wrong option and stick to it for 10 or more games in the face of overwhelming opposing evidence.

I really thought hiring Joe Philbin would inject some creativity into the offense, but it's looked the same as last year--Stale. At least now there is a genuine pass action threat. Has Rodgers' knee been so severely limiting that he can't work under center much?

I have a really good feeling about the game tomorrow. IMO, the Pack is ready for some smash mouth football and gonna take it the house many times. Let's go Pack and make a statement game against Seattle! Avenge that horrible playoff loss from a few seasons ago!

They've shown an ability over the last several meetings to play well against Seattle, although those games have all been at Lambeau, on both sides of the ball. Here's hoping that continues.

One reason to keep MM is that a new HC might want his own DC. Think of how ironic it would be if the new HC wants to bring Capers back as his DC!!! Thanks, Since '61

I got 4 downvotes above for much the same thought: we should not bring MM back under any circumstances. The four who downvoted me probably downvoted you, and also failed to provide any reasons for retaining MM. You at least got some posters to provide some of the better reasons for retaining MM.

In 2010 the packers were 10- 6. They won it all. The following year 15-1 in 2011. Most of you seem think it's simple to hire and fire regardless. MM has been beset by injuries, etc. TT hired him. ESPN\= Regarded league-wide as a very creative offensive mind, McCarthy is also known for his communication skills and ability to develop a quick rapport with his players. Yet were hearing MM didn't do them right. Scheming or lack of commitment? Why did MM take back the play calling. It's communication people. Let's be honest. Believe! (The players want too. ) The support has to be for your coach if you want to move forward. He's worked closely with Gute. The window for new players just got opened. I guarantee he will turn your whims into smiles. Remember the 10-6.

The moronic use or the RB's this year is proof enough that MM has no clue how to utilize his roster. Then you look into recent past and be reminded that Heyward and Hyse were just guys or replacement level players that were immediate probowlers elsewhere. I am guessing the same thing will happen with Randall. If that does happen, how is it going to feel knowing that 3/4 of starting AFC probowl secondary was allowed to walk out the door?
Pettine has found a way to get SOMETHING out of Fackrell of all people. A player most of us assumed would be released next season.
MM needs to go! No discussion needed! I cant think of anything he has done or can do to warrant being brought back.

Congrats on picking MVS in your mock draft Jersey Al. That's pretty good and MVS is pretty darn good. You do this draft over and MVS is a 2nd or first round pick based on what we are all seeing so far. Incredible talent. Again, I see James Lofton in this kid.
