NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

Here's what Lance Zierlien of NFL.com had to say about Cisse: "Teams will be willing to take a chance on Cisse’s explosive athleticism and upside, but a refinement runway might be needed to smooth some of the rougher edges. He’s scheme-versatile in coverage and is an A-rated run supporter. Work ethic and athletic testing will work in his favor. However, a lack of instincts and break anticipation could cost him in coverage against quality route runners. His press will become a more effective weapon with technical work and his route recognition should improve with more reps. Cisse’s traits and competitiveness are clear selling points, but a lack of on-ball production and coverage consistency create a more volatile floor."

Here's what Dane Brugler of The Athletic had to say about Cisse: "An explosive athlete, Cisse plays with excess burst and speed to fly to the football. He tends to declare his hips early and relies too heavily on his athleticism rather than his technique or anticipation, leading to coverage losses. When he finds the football, he is capable of impressive athletic feats to knock it away, but he needs to be more consistent with his body phasing to shrink catch windows. Despite needing to clean things up in the run game, his downhill toughness is great to see. Cisse is an unrefined, promising cover athlete with the twitched-up movements and speed to become an NFL starter. However, his pro ceiling will be determined by the development of his route recognition and ball skills. He offers inside-outside versatility with special teams (gunner) upside."

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Per the Cheesehead TV Draft Guide, "Brandon Cisse’s aggressive style fits well in a defense run by Jonathan Gannon. Gannon’s system values aggressive physical corners who challenge receivers early and maintain disciplined coverage. Cisse’s ability to disrupt releases at the line of scrimmage aligns with that approach. His length and speed help him stay connected downfield and compete at the catch point. Cisse also brings a physical presence in run support, attacking downhill, and engaging the ball carrier when plays move outside. That is something that has been lacking from the Packers' cornerback room."

CAREER NOTES:

Year School Games Tkls TFLs FF PD INT
2023 N.C. State 13 10 0 0 1 1
2024 N.C. State 9 28 1.5 0 5 0
2025 South Carolina 12 27 1.5 1 6 1

Cisse was a three-star recruit out of high school and the 51st-ranked cornerback in the 2023 class, so he didn't exactly have programs lining up at the door to sign him. Most of his offers were from mid-major schools. Cisse shared, “I begged my mom for $150 to attend the camp at N.C. State, and I promised her I’d make it worth it. I definitely did.” That became Cisse's first Power 5 offer, and he committed almost immediately.

Cisse spent his first two years at N.C. State mostly working as a reserve and special teams contributor. He decided to enter the transfer portal after his sophomore season. Cisse signed with South Carolina, his father's Alma mater. Cisse earned himself a starting role at South Carolina, but there is one caveat worth noting: he only played 41 snaps per game. Despite limited production, Cisse declared for the NFL draft after his junior season.

COMMENTARY:

With their first pick, the Packers went right at one of their most pressing needs — and they did it with a player who jumps off the page athletically - Brandon Cisse. The first trait that jumps off the page for Cisse is a 41-inch vertical and a 10'11" broad jump. He also has the speed to match. He checks nearly every box the Packers use when evaluating cornerbacks, with the only mild blemish being a 4.33 shuttle time - something Brian Gutekunst was clearly comfortable looking past that for a player with this kind of physical profile.

What makes Cisse especially intriguing is that he doesn't turn 21 until July. While he certainly could come in and contribute right away, he's far from a finished product. This pick is more about projection than production. An AFC scout shared this note about Cisse: “You draft him more for tomorrow’s tools and not for today’s tape. The bad reps are going to get corrected. I like his makeup and his speed.”

Cisse's time in the SEC was brief, but he held his own against strong competition and continued to develop throughout the season. Cisse is a physical corner. He's more than willing to challenge receivers at the line of scrimmage to disrupt releases and timing, which should fit in well in Jonathan Gannon's defense. Cisse also has the instincts and willingness to trigger downhill to come up and help against the run - something the Packers would love to see from their cornerbacks. His technique needs some work, but that's a coachable problem when the tools are this good.

Packers' national scout Mike Owen highlighted Cisse's versatility - he can play both inside and outside, and he can play either zone coverage or man-to-man. Cisse echoed that, stating, "Whatever the Packers need me to do, I can do it. That's the good thing about it. Whatever they need me to do, I'll be able to play it."

Cisse already has multiple connections to Green Bay. Current cornerback Keisean Nixon also went to South Carolina, and the two have been in touch. Cisse noted that he's looking forward to learning from the veteran corner. Off the field, Cisse's girlfriend's family is from Wisconsin, and they are big Packer fans. Stock up.

A bit surprised he was still on the board. I didn't think he would last. He actually graded out better than a good many picks before him. CB room absolutely needs to turnover.

"This kid never played in cold weather.."

Willie Buchanan - San Diego State
Leroy Butler - Florida State
Doug Evans - Louisiana Tech
Tramon Williams - Louisiana Tech
Ken Ellis - Southern
Al Harris - Texas A&M Kingsville
Casey Hayward - Vanderbilt
Craig Newsome - Arizona State
Mike McKenzie - Memphis
Sam Shields - Miami

There's been a QB or three that attended warm weather colleges and they worked out kind of okayish for the Packers, right?

A project selection? He should at least be able to move Valentine back to the Dime spot.. Vikings draft a LB and move Greenard for a couple of 3s and Gute is still chewing the cud.
Move up into the 2nd for Roush at TE.

Cisse is a more fluid athlete than Stokes and better in man coverage - where Stokes was somewhat "grabby." Also Cisse is 2 years younger at draft time.

Cisse is a more physical and aggressive player than Stokes -which did result in some penalties. Although none of the reports thought that it was chronic. Also that good coaching at the pro level would smooth out his game.

Cisse is very talented physically. He’s more than able to track WRs. He’s a better mover than Stokes, who is all about length and straight line speed. Cisse does not have the length of course.

What worries me about Cisse is that he seems to lack instincts or field awareness. He’s very good locked on to a man, but when he does not have that type of assignment he seems lost and confused quite often. In College he could often make up for that by sheer athleticism. In the pros that may not wash.

Still, we definitely got better at perimeter corner now, as long as we play more man on man coverages.

Seems like a good pick, a logical pick which I am happy to see. He's young, but should be able to contribute this year. The scouting reports here say he's scheme-versatile but other reports say he's particularly good in man and will need a little work in zone and with tackling technique; ball skills, too. I'm hoping he get on the field in short order, and once he gets a little experience, can pick off a few: something we're sorely missing. Desire and work ethic is there.

Only 20 years old. He could realistically grow another 1-2 inches - gain 5 to 10 lbs. and add useful strength. So a very high ceiling for a very athletic player.

This doesn't seem to go along with the idea of not taking on projects in the early rounds. I guess we're hoping he's a quick learner so that we get some good seasons in before his second contract.
From the info above, it sounds like he has the skills to be great -- although his ball skills may be a question mark. Time will tell.
It seems like he's a good tackler, which is a big plus.
Rooting for the kid.
Cisse-boom-bah!
P.S. Maybe not the best photo of him shown above, as he's getting beat and looks clueless. Let's hope that turns out to be an irony.

You're right about the photo, I hadn't noticed that. Maybe it's supposed to be a featured photo for the WR.

Cisse needs to work on some things, like most players who are not drafted in the top half of the first round, but I wouldn't call him a project. He was 45 on the consensus big board. Seems like he was rated higher at first, to the point where he was off my radar, but he drifted downward for no particular reason.

That's good to know, GregC.
Maybe the guy is so much oozing with talent that he was just too good to pass up, as someone who will become just too good to pass against.
With his youth and his ability, maybe the thinking is that he really has no weakness that cannot be overcome with good coaching.
If the report is true that he's a hard worker, maybe the Packers see him as a possible starter right away, or at least a meaningful part-timer.

#6 CB in the CHTV Guide. Nicely done. He's going to need some coaching, but he will be surrounded by DB experts Gannon, Bobby Babich, and new DB coach Bullocks. Cisse has skills...really good skills. Just a 20 year old kid...if he takes to coaching he will challenge all his mates in the CB room.

FWIW, The Athletic draft guide (The Beast) had him ranked as the 45th best prospect, and Pro Football Focus (PFF big board) had him ranked 41st.
GB Packers GM/scouts valued him at pick 52.
RAS score our favorite metric to argue about, 9.24 (elite athlete).

So getting him at #52 is uncontroversial.
Packers needing help in the CB room was also uncontroversial.

But here, this is the internet so we will always find 1 or 2 trolls with anonymity here so they will of course post negative takes despite all of the above.

I'm not much of a Guter fan, but those who don't like the pick, relax.

Let the GM do his job.

IF....that player doesn't pan out in a year or two, then its fair game to judge the mans picks.
*********
I remember critiquing Guter on draft night, on two occasions, but not about the players worth.

1) When Guter traded up for Love, drafting a bench player when the team was cresting towards the SB, and that pick wasn't for helping that team.
He gave up on that team when he drafted Love, imo.

2) When he picked Gary at 12, weeks after signing the Smith brothers.
He knew most likely, Gary was going to be a bench player for at least 2 years.
I guess Gute must have liked him so much, he didn't care.
Also evidenced by the second contract he gave him.
Which....well, Gary's gone, nuff said
