Can Quay Walker Take a Big Step Forward in 2025?

The 2025 season will be a critical one for Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker. The Georgia alum will be in the final year of his rookie contract and GM Brian Gutekunst needs to decide if Walker deserves a new contract or whether the team will let him go and test the free agent waters next offseason.

Walker has great speed and athleticism. He can use that speed to run down plays when the ball is run away from him, to spy on a quarterback, to blitz, or to cover a running back or tight end on passing plays. That’s why the Packers used the 22nd pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to select him. He has led the Packers in tackles in each of his first three seasons in the league. He did that in 2024 despite missing four games due to injury.

The issue with Walker has not been the number of tackles he’s made, but when and where on the field many of them have taken place. Too often, Walker has made stops after runners or receivers have already made substantial gains. His ability to read plays quickly and make splash plays has also been lower than the Packers hoped when they chose him in the first round of the draft.

However, late in the 2024 season, Walker seemed to pick up his play. His reaction time was better, and he was making more plays at or behind the line of scrimmage. In fact, he finished the 2024 campaign with a career-high nine tackles for loss and tied his career best with 2.5 sacks.

“I think he was progressing at that point also and playing some good football, right about the time he got hurt,” said former Packers linebackers coach Anthony Campanile. He is now the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. “I thought it was a steady progression for him, he made a jump I would say at that point in the year. I think he was just starting to see it really well. In the room, I think he’s done everything he can do. He’s all over it. Answering questions, totally immersed and locked into the game plan.”

“That’s something that kind of speaks to the character of the guy, too. Even the games he hasn’t played in, he’s in the room, answering questions, calling it out, playing the plays through on the screen just like he’s out there as he normally would be.”

Head coach Matt LaFleur also saw the progress Walker was making late last season. “Quay's been playing his best ball,” LaFleur said in December.
“I don't think anybody would dispute that. He's got a better feel for what we're asking him to do.”

The key question now becomes whether this late season improvement was a mere hot streak where he put a few good games together, or whether he can play this well consistently going forward.

GM Brian Gutekunst addressed the media after the Packers playoff loss to the Eagles in January and expressed confidence in Walker.

“I think Quay continued to make a leap and [he's] another guy who had struggled through injuries at the end of the year, but he was really impactful for us this year. Continues to be a great leader for us,” Gutekunst said. “Certainly think, we would love to have him around here for longer than just a couple more years. He’s that kind of guy.”

If Walker plays well in 2025, the Packers will almost certainly try to sign him to a second contract with the club. The thought of having Walker and Edgerrin Cooper, two very fast linebackers, on the field together would give defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley some options in his second year running the Green Bay defense.

Ultimately, it is up to Walker to continue to play at this new, higher level. If he does, his future in Green Bay could be very bright. If not, he will likely have to look for another team willing to give him a chance to prove he deserves to be a quality starter in this league.

He was a better LB when Cooper started playing alongside of him. Your guard will be better with a better center next to him too, and so on. Quay doesn't have to do much more to prove he belongs. He certainly doesn't belong on another team.

Was he playing better because of Cooper or was he playing better himself and Cooper just made the unit even better on top of that? The answer is fairly critical in my view.

It can be both. They can feed off each other. It doesn't have to be either / or. Stand up LB is a tough position to play. Look what happened to Clay Mathews when they put him standing up in the middle. He was great inside against the run, but all the offense had to do was throw to a guy he was covering in the flats, and it was a first down or much more. Still have nightmares about a playoff game in AZ.

If you’re a pro bowl player because you play with another pro bowler, who cares….If Coop brings out the best in Quay and/or cover up a weakness but yet they compliment each other it really doesn’t matter.

I'd prefer to have THREE fast, quality LBers.
I'm not sold on TyRon Hopper, but maybe they've seen something we haven't.
I'd love to add Jihaad Campbell or Carson Schwesinger to the group.

You want churn on the practice squad, not the starting lineup. Not the actual guys who suit up and try to win games. We only carry 5 LBs on the active roster. We already have 5 under contract. So we should draft a guy who is headed for our practice squad, or we should eat a contract because we want to see if some other guy might be better? I don't think that's the way it works.

The Packers have a tough decision here. I'm glad I'm not the GM on this one. We don't want to lock him up unless he does take another step forward, but he has been relatively durable and has made a lot of tackles. On the other hand, the fifth-year option is quite expensive, so I don't know if we want to do that. My feeling is that he still has room to grow, but you know, seeing is really believing.

I usually ask myself, how would a top 4-5 team handle the 'Quay' situation? I think GB is less objective than a top team would be.

That's really interesting behavior. What do you think is the root cause of your perception of Green Bay's insufficient objectivity? Are there examples of players in "Quay"-like situations in your top 4-5 teams that stand out? Name three, please.

Are there other questions you usually ask yourself? Please tell!

This was my thought. He has a hard time with plays coming either directly at him out to about 30 degrees. Bad angles have been his most consistent trait. BUT I think Hafley figured out his strength--Delayed blitzes.

I recall Hafley calling out Walker during his first presser in GB. When asked what position did he see Quay playing in his defense, he said the position that maximizes his skills while putting him in the best spot to make plays.

He obviously saw Quay's play maker abilities...and now he has a second playmaker in Cooper.

Unlike Barry, who's soft zone/prevent put Walker in positions that wasted his skills, too often in a deep zone, standing still after the snap for second or two diagnosing his job. Too often he was covering 4.4 WRs streaking through his middle zone.

Hafley and Campanile worked hard to get him to read and react at the snap. And in the last quarter of the season he was flying around...even getting routine pressures or a sack when sent on a blitz. And his tackling quality also greatly improved last season. He was so much quicker to the ball.

The "Read and React" pressure D is a good fit for Walker. He should continue grow along with Cooper (and hopefully Hopper) this year.

I am excited for the defense!

The application of make-up is tricky, as any female will tell you, as less reveals more of you and more reveals less of you. Find the balance, and you'll always look and feel good about yourself, and others will respond.

Walker, IMO, is still looking for his balance, and we can only hope the Defensive scheme for him is applied to achieve the look. Both parties need to first understand what the make-up being applied is to do. Conceal flaws, highlight attributes, know what is the proper base/foundation needs to be, what is the look you need/want to be seen as. If done poorly, everybody can see the fraud presented, done correctly, and nobody looks for the flaws, while you amaze them with what you made them only able to see.

Make-up is nothing but deception, but one thing will always hold true, a pig is a pig no matter the amount of make-up applied. I don't think Walker is a pig, but he is a possible Prince that can be a frog without the proper make-up.

Just an analogy, don't take it too seriously, but please try to get the point.

Interesting to read Anthony Campamile's comments. No wonder the coaches like Quay so much. I think the deadline for picking up the 5th year option is May 1st, so we will soon find out what the Packers front office really thinks of him. I'm on the fence. Maybe they could offer him a two-year deal with some incentives.

Spoff thinks since so many LBs that are edge rushers are lumped in together driving the price up, that it's more likely they'll give the 5th to Wyatt and try to extend Quay.

Spoff's opinions are based on what he hears the Packers are thinking, but he swears he doesn't get any inside information. I think he actually does but can't report on anything before it's made public.

This is an unpopular opinion but it forms the basis of my observation. The sort of lengthy propping up of Q Walker-4 years and counting--is more about Gutekunst's need to show he has chosen guys worthy of a second contract.A portion of GM drafting prowess involves the ability to choose guys who will easily qualify for a second contract.
Q Walker, Wyatt & Gary are not those guys. I think this need to justify one's 1st round picks also keeps players on the field too long, makes them starters when they are not starting-caliber,(Savage, Walker, LVN) and strains other players (Edgerrin Cooper) by having to compensate for them, etc. Ty'Ronn Hopper may be another-

I have never waivered from this belief and also know that there will be 5-6 hostile dudes who will do their best
to take me down.

The only bad things Quay has done was the stupid youthful exuberance personal foul penalties when he was a rookie. It's not like he's been handed his shorts when playing. Why are they so down on him? His first season he overtook Campbell who'd recently been All-Pro. I think giving him the green dot right off the bat might have hampered his learning curve, but he and the D have steadily improved since he's been there. It didn't improve regardless of if he was there or not, he was the MLB and one of the main cogs.

1. That is impossible to do. The Cap Monster will not allow it.
2. Some players fall apart after being labeled a can't miss HOFer...Tony Mandarich?
3. The vast majority of draft selections do not earn a second K with their drafting team. Some don't even earn a second 4 year deal (Myers)...to believe Gutey awards 2nd K's to his draftees to make himself look good is a silly opinion.
4. It makes me believe you are a "hostile dude" when it comes to all things Brian Gutekuenst.

It took Gute too long to draft the positions.

Without cut-blocking the Edge, the QBs are getting the ball out faster. Less time for the long ball. Speed to the SPOT and then catch the damn ball. Route runners are my criterion for the WRs.

The Walker decision is a 50/50 ball for me. He is an imposing athletic beast who coaches and teammates love. But he has played largely 3 unremarkable years. It just feels like his instinctiveness is not there and that this is the kind of guy we might overpay to stay. Maybe we are better off letting him go. If someone else signs him to a big deal they take the risk and we get a nice compensatory pick. He might blow up into an all-pro and we look silly, but historical performance would suggest otherwise. But the reason it is a 50/50 ball for me is I have to assume coaches and teammates know a lot more than me.
